Gabby was the first female football anchor on terrestrial television and she's perfected the art of asking great questions, while covering a wide range of international sporting events.  In this episode, Matt turns the tables on Gabby, and she speaks with great honesty, sharing moments and insights from her life and career. Sporty and very driven from an early age, Gabby competed at the Commonwealth Games when she was still a teenager. But when her gymnastics career came to an abrupt end, she had to find a new direction. And this big change was followed by the shocking loss of her brother Daniel, when he was just 15 years old. She shares how she found confidence as a broadcaster and learned to accept the competitiveness that was forged in a sporting environment. I'm not sure there's anyone quite like Kate Mosse. The driving power behind the Women's Prize for Fiction which is now in its 27th year (the winner was VV Ganeshananthan's Brotherless Night) and now the Women's Prize for Non-Fiction (whose inaugural winner was Doppleganger by Naomi Klein), she also manages to write a book a year (and they're not small!) The latest of which, The Ghost Ship, is just out in paperback. In tribute I thought we'd replay one of the earliest The Shift conversations with her. This one is from February 2021 when The Shift was but a baby!...You'd be hard pushed to think of anyone who has done more for women writers than this week's guest. Twenty five years ago, Kate Mosse was working in publishing when she looked around and realised that everyone on all the awards shortlists looked familiar - pale, male and stale. The result - the Women's Prize for Fiction - has just celebrated its 25th anniversary, and given a much-needed voice to women's writing.Kate is also a bestselling author of 7 novels and 2 short story collections including the millions-selling global smash hit Labyrinth and her new book, The City of Tears. Kate is kind, funny and candid as she talks about how easily women's history is erased (and why we should never forget the women who went before us), her “other” job as a full-time carer - and why caring is a feminist issue - the devaluing of women's work, being a pathological optimist and why she CANNOT WAIT to be 60. Trigger Warning: Kate also speaks honestly about bereavement and grief, three quarters of the way through the episode.* You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including The Midpoint Plan by Gabby Logan and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me.* If you enjoyed this episode and you fancy buying me a coffee, pop over to my page on buymeacoffee.com• And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com• The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Juliette Nicholls @ Pineapple Audio Production. Viva la season finale! Where we welcome a total trailblazer and change maker, the iconic sports broadcast Gabby Logan. In her almost 30 year career, Gabby has been at the centre of phenomenal change in a predominantly male dominated industry. She has presented many of the country's biggest sporting events including the Olympics, the Commonwealth games, the World Cup and the 2022 Euros which changed the face of women's football in Britain when the Lionesses won. Gabby has paved the way for other women and played a vital role in the promotion of women's sport. On top of all this, Gabby has received an MBE, is the host of two hit podcasts; ‘The MidPoint' and, the brand new, ‘The Sports Agents' which she co-hosts with fellow broadcaster Mark Chapman, and has even found the time to write her memoir ‘The First Half'.In this inspiring episode, Annie and Gabby discuss the slow but important changes in sports and broadcasting for women, the parallels in their careers - navigating being the token woman and bringing others through, how her upbringing in a sporty family with a footballer father helped shape her career, and how a tragic death of her brother in her teens taught her about dealing with grief and making the most of life. This week on the #MondayMile podcast, I'm joined by @gabbylogan for a very fast mile, I mean in pace haha. She's been a dominant force on our screens anchoring some of the countries most historical moments in sporting history. Not only is she a Mother, a wife, she's former athlete, a broadcaster, author, writer, and fellow podcaster. The word professionalism can be banded around lightly, however this women encapsulates everything that word defines. There's great and there are The Greats, and Gabby Logan is one of them. On our (very) brisk walk, I chat to Gabby about her upbringing, including what it was like to have a professional footballer for a father, and how ever-changing lifestyle led her to appreciate change in her adult life and career. We speak about how it felt to commentate on the @lionesses historic win at the 2022 Euros, her iconic sign-off – ‘You think it's all over, but it's only just begun' - and the progress and development of women's sport   We also speak about her family, and the influence of their ‘competitive' household. She tells me how proud she is of her fantastically talented kids, twins @reuben_logan and @_loislogan, and how proud she is that they're pursuing their dreams, as well as how it felt to compete against her husband @kennylogan11 on Strictly Come Dancing   This is a special one – thanks so much for joining me, Gabby! Gabby Logan is best known as a BBC sports presenter but has also turned her hand to stand up comedy for Sports Relief (2012), to writing her memoir called The First Half, and to ice baths on Freeze Your Fear (2022). She hosts an excellent podcast called Mid-Life in which she, a guest and an expert explore how to navigate the mysterious territory of middle age.She has 18 year old twins and is married to retired Scottish rugby union player Kenny Logan. I spoke to Gabby a few months after her son Reuben had left the nest, with her daughter Lois following suit in a year, and she told me how the house is starting to feel too big.We talked about her brother Daniel's sudden death in 1992 when he was 15, and Gabby was 19 - and how she and her family were - and still are - impacted by this tragedy. But Gabby has a core of positivity and stressed that people can go on to have a good life even when something so terrible happens.Gabby represented Wales at the Commonwealth Games in 1990 as a rhythmic gymnast, which Gabby so perfectly described as: where sport meets showbiz. The brightly-coloured leotards she wore were not a million miles from what I wear on stage now - but she wasn't too impressed by my opening bid to buy them as a job lot. I'll keep working on her!Spinning Plates is presented by Sophie Ellis-Bextor, produced by Claire Jones and post-production by Richard Jones Hosted on Acast. This week Dr Louise is joined by broadcaster and former international gymnast, Gabby Logan. Gabby is the host of her own successful podcast The Mid Point where she speaks about midlife challenges, and here she shares her own experiences of the menopause. Gabby reflects on the impact of the menstrual cycle on female athletes and the positive impact of speaking about it and increasing awareness. She shares how exercise is helping her to forge and cement friendships and make time for herself, and how HRT helped her to rekindle her vigour for exercise.  Finally, Gabby shares three reasons why we should all be exercising, regardless of our age: It's future proofing. I want to be active in my 80s, playing golf, going for long walks and getting myself out of a chair without it being a kind of a national incident. So I'm doing things now that are going to help empower me. It's good for your mental health. In my 20s, I realised somehow that exercise was good for me mentally. I knew that going for a run was about clearing my brain, getting back on track if I'd had a wobbly day or starting the day well. That feeling has grown and I know exercise is vital for mental health. It's about balance. Think 80/20. If you are going to fall off, have a glass of wine or a gin and tonic at the weekends, don't feel bad about it. The exercise I'm doing will hopefully help to negate some of the toxins I might occasionally put inside me. Follow Gabby on Instagram @gabbylogan
