"Do you want a taste of the lash?""No thanks, I've just had some cocoa."In 1974 the BBC issued the first Goon Show Classics LP. On one side was The Dreaded Batter Pudding Hurler of Bexhill-on-Sea and on the other side was the show we're talking about today: The Histories of Pliny the Elder, Spike Milligan's attempt to pen a sword-and-sandals Goonish epic.It has become one the most beloved Goon Shows ever, with some highly memorable gags and an end-of-term looseness about it. They all sounded like they were just having a lot of fun. Joining Tyler is returning guest James Page and as well as discussing the show itself pay tribute to a couple of the backroom boys, examine the difference between Cyril and Lew and give mention to Mark Kermode, Terry Scott and the Asterix books.
Jack Mallion speaks in the Bexhill venue for our youth takeover.
The premiere of David Hare's play Plenty at the National Theatre in 1978 marked him out as one of the UK's most skilled and socially conscious playwrights. Plenty transferred to Broadway, Hare adapted it into a film starring Meryl Streep, and in the following years he became known as a writer for whom the political and the personal are deeply entwined. Often referred to as Britain's pre-eminent ‘state of the nation playwright', his plays in the 1980s examined a wide range of social and political issues, including the Church of England in Racing Demon, the judiciary in Murmuring Judges and party politics in The Absence of War. He tackled international geopolitics in Via Dolorosa - about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict - and the invasion of Iraq with Stuff Happens and the Vertical Hour. Equally skilled as a screenwriter, his film screenplays for The Hours and The Reader saw him twice nominated for Academy Awards. David Hare was knighted in 1998 for ‘services to theatre'. He talks to John Wilson about how his lower-middle class background and family life in Bexhill-on-Sea stimulated his imagination. He pays tribute to some of the most formative people in his life: his Cambridge university tutor, the Welsh writer and academic Raymond Williams, whose maxim that ‘culture is ordinary' had a profound effect on his life as a writer; the actress Kate Nelligan, who starred in several of Hare's plays, including Plenty; and his wife Nicole Farhi who, he says, transformed his idea of himself and who inadvertently helped inspire one of his best loved plays, Skylight. The night we captured this soundscene of Cooden Beach in East Sussex, there was a brisk onshore breeze blowing in from the west. West is to the right of scene, where the incoming waves can sometimes be heard making first landfall. It's February. It's coming up to 11pm. The sky is a deep dark velvet, and the clean sea air, is hovering around 6 degrees centigrade. Nobody is about. Centre of scene is due south. The open sea. Behind, the whole of England. Just over a mile and a half to the west is Normans Bay. Two miles to the east is Bexhill. It's a coastline defined by shingle. Vast sloping fields of clean rounded stones, stretching from horizon to horizon. On such an overcast night as this. Moonless. The landscape can no longer be defined by its horizon. To our sense of spatial hearing, and being within thirty yards of the crashing waves, the world is transformed into a wide textured canvas. Heavy greys and shadowed browns across the lower half. Brighter, crisper, scattering greys, just above the mid-line. Every breaker there, as it makes landfall. And there, as its form collapses into spray. Still there, as it rattles and hauls the loose shingle back with it. There, and there again, always in different places. From left to right. Endlessly overlapping. Endlessly renewing. Night breakers, on a shingle beach. * This is the latter half of a one hour recording we captured on Cooden Beach last February. Hear the first section in episode 155. In 2021 we captured the shingle of Normans Bay in episode 63 and the essence of Bexhill in episode 66.

As Agatha Christie's esteemed detective Hercule Poirot often says, ‘murder is a habit'. But the murderer we're talking about today takes this to a whole other level...In this episode, we're talking about Agatha Christie's 1936 novel The ABC Murders. In this novel, Poirot comes face to face with a mysterious serial-killer adversary who goes by the name of ABC. ABC commits murders in alphabetical order, beginning with Alice Ascher in Andover, then Betty Barnard in Bexhill-on-Sea, then Sir Carmichael Clarke in Churston… But are these killings the work of a senseless sadist, or are they carefully planned murders, designed to conceal a sinister motive?Join us for a deep dive into this classic mystery novel – more a thriller than a classic whodunnit. We talk about serial killers, motives and murder methods. We also discuss the structure of crime novels, as well as some of the adaptations of The ABC Murders, including the ITV production with David Suchet and the more recent John Malkovich production for the BBC.As ever, a warning: this episode contains spoilers for The ABC Murders by Agatha Christie. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
In this episode of Business Marriage we lament on how everything changes - in business, in marriage, and in life, and how we find it an absolute nightmare. We always think about how easy things will be when we achieve our dreams… but all these changes keep getting in the way! We go over how things are changing in our lives and businesses, how disruptive these changes are, but also the opportunities they can create. We go over the support of our wonderful friends and family, and how we would react if we were recognised on the street. We also go over the changes we want to see in each other by bringing back a segment from a previous episode… During a recent family trip, we found the most delightful fish & chip shop in Bexhill, Marino's Fish Restaurant! "The Good Listening To" Podcast with me Chris Grimes! (aka a "GLT with me CG!")
Ladies n Genminminminmin (er, min...) look who I've gawn n' bagged for The Good Listening To Show! None other than National Children's Theatre Treasure David Wood OBE.With the peace, quiet & sanctuary of very specifically "Room 208" of the Cooden Beach Hotel in Bexhill-on-Sea in Sussex for his Clearing, where a lot of his 'writing magic' over the years has taken place!Heralded by The Times as being "The National Children's Dramatist" David Wood was a favourite of Queen Elizabeth II (presented to her no less than 4 times - and twice on the same day for reasons that he'll explain!). His new book, "Elizabeth Taylor's Kiss And Other Brushes With Hollywood!" reflects on his life & extraordinary career like a big fat kiss!David Wood is a children's entertainment all-rounder, versatility-pants & polymath. He is an Actor, Author, Composer, Director, Magician (Bingo Caller!) & Producer. He is also an esteemed member with a "Gold Star" for recognition of his services to Children's Entertainment of the Magic Circle. With so many seminal Children's theatre works & adaptations to his name including "The Gingerbread Man" (that partnered him way-back-when with Producer Cameron Macintosh & a show that has since toured the world many times over); "The Selfish Shellfish"; "The Owl & The Pussycat Went To See"; "The Tiger Who Came To Tea"; "Dinosaurs & All That Rubbish"; "Goodnight Mr Tom" & "Noddy" to name but several. He also wrote "The Queen's Handbag" as part of the Queen's 80th Birthday celebrations in 2006, culminating in a Garden Party hosted by the Queen for 5,000 children + an all star cast in the gardens of Buckingham Palace - & simultaneously broadcast Live on BBC One!He is also a man to whom I will be eternally grateful, as he gave me my 1st ever professional job, on graduating from The Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, understudying TV Presenter Peter Duncan in Whirligig Theatre's "Dinosaurs And All That Rubbish". So it's all his fault! This is a sincere opportunity after all these years to welcome him to the Clearing to say THANK YOU!David Wood has something of the magical spirit of Peter Pan about him. No wonder: it was his favourite story as a child & he was shaped in the 1960s. Well over half a century later, David still exudes an ageless happy-go-lucky, childlike optimism, a super-civilised energy & endless enthusiasm, which is simply irresistible. OK, he readily admits to being ‘a bit of a show-off'! Magic was his first party trick. From an early age, he also enjoyed being a choirboy - as it involved a distinctive wardrobe & a weekly public performance. What's more, going to church two or three times on Sundays gave David a credible excuse to escape the parental tensions at home. Aged 14, when he told his Headmaster in Chichester that he wanted to be an actor, he was immediately pointed towards a one week residential course. What he learned there has served David well for all of his professional life! Another teacher at that school, curiously nicknamed ‘Spiv', suggested to David that focusing exclusively on acting might be a self-limiting decision. What about writing, directing, producing? It instantly broadened David's vision of theatrical possibilities. Look at the nominations, the awards, the applause: He has excelled on stage, in the cinema and on TV. He has directed & produced, written literally dozens of plays, songs and books.During his action-packed life, David has met & worked with just about all of the great English names in the theatre & Hollywood, including Laurence Olivier, Michael Redgrave, Alec Guinness, Cameron Macintosh, John Mortimer, Peter Cook and Bernard Miles. Not to mention Richard Burton & Elizabeth Taylor, George Martin, Lindsay Anderson, Malcolm McDowell & Michael Palin! "If you have ears, prepare to lend them now!"

Beach huts today go for ridiculous amounts of money but they've always been desirable things, ever since their popularity skyrocketed after the First World War. Hypertension is also known as high or raised blood pressure. The higher the pressure, the harder the heart must pump. It is a serious medical condition and can increase the risk of heart, brain, kidney, and other diseases. People from the most deprived areas in England are 30% more likely than the least deprived to have high blood pressure which is why it is vital to identify it early in patients to address the health inequalities that exist in some communities in Sussex. Aware that within the Sussex integrated care system only 64.6% of those estimated to have hypertension had been 'detected', Little Common and Old Town Surgeries in Bexhill-on-Sea joined forces with their local Primary Care Network and public health organisation OneYou East Sussex, to hold a hypertension awareness event led by Dr Phil Stocks.

Over the past few years singer Sarah Moule has established a rapidly growing reputation as one of Britain's most exciting new jazz talents. Her highly acclaimed debut album It's A Nice Thought, released in 2002, showed that in lyricist Fran Landesman and composer Simon Wallace (“one of the finest songwriting partnerships alive” The Observer) she has found a source of contemporary songs which are melodic, thought-provoking, literate and witty, and lend themselves perfectly to Sarah's classic vocal interpretation. Sarah grew up in Bexhill-on-Sea on the East Sussex coast where her passion for singing was sparked by singing English folk songs with her large musical family. She spent the 1980s working and travelling in South America, Asia, China, Australia, Europe and the USA. On returning to London in the early 1990s she met jazz singers Ian Shaw and Claire Martin who introduced her to the song-writing team of veteran American lyricist Fran Landesman and Welsh pianist and composer Simon Wallace.
Great to catch up with Rich and Marc Moore from SOURCEBMX who are out in the US and came over to the house for a catch-up and a Podcast. It's amazing to see what the boys have done with SOURCEBMX from their early race days to opening their first BMX shop and now to what they have grown SOURCEBMX into, which is a globally respected and successful company in the BMX World and they do it with the same passion they have for BMX. We hit on the early days of Rich and Marc discovering racing, the Bexhill / Hastings scene looking up to Keith Duly (@jump_club) as the local race legend and working with him today with Jump Club and the rebuild of the local Bexhill track that should be complete in the next few months. We chat about some of the competition the brothers raced against from Kelvin & Liam Batey, Marcus Bloomfield, Peter Fieldhouse, Laurence Mapp and Stephen Murray along with some of the teams they rode for. Rich talks about all the BMX Media he has done over the years shooting for magazines and testing products. Marc talks about placing 3rd at the 98 Worlds, spending time in the US working at Profile and opening a BMX shop after returning from the States. We talk about SOURCEBMX, the growth over the years, getting in early on online sales, Warehouses in the UK, Kentucky, and Germany with over 70 employees in addition to sponsoring teams and riders including Kelvin Batey, Kye Whyte and Shanaze Reade during the early days. We touch on the SOURCE Park, The Battle of Hastings, events, some of the brands they work with, the future, getting more involved in BMX RACE and so much more. Great chatting with the boys and I personally want to thank them both for supporting everything I do in BMX from teams, to grassroots programs and basically anything I have told Rich I'm involved in - he responds with, "Yep, we're in". They are a breath of fresh air in the BMX industry to work with and great to hang out with. Cheers and hope everyone likes the Pod. SOURCEBMX.COM @sourcebmx @thesourcepark @sourcebmxrace

Huw Merriman may be a Conservative MP now – but as a teenager, he had to come out to his staunchly socialist parents. Maybe that's why he doesn't have time for what he calls the ‘pie throwing' of Parliamentary politics. In this hilly ramble down from Burwash to Batemans in his Bexhill and Battle constituency, Huw talks about why transport gets him out of bed in the morning, where he wants to put bees in the Houses of Parliament, and whether he's planning a supergroup with his celebrity constituents. Nick was born the year AC/DC were formed (1973)) in the historically significant town of Hastings, which by then was more than a little tired. His parents John and Chrissie later moved the family up the coast to Bexhill-on- Sea, which Nick brilliantly sums up as a place where the main industry is care homes, London is the North and ambition is modest. At University something clicked for Nick and with that came a desire for "MORE" and he was in a hurry to get it. In Nick's own inimitable words in the 90's he became a "fully loaded sales dick" and a successful one at that. The first half of the 00's on the other hand was an incredibly challenging time for Nick and was in many ways life changing, as was the arrival in his life of Vicki who he married in 2011. When we recorded this episode Nick and Vicki were preparing to move themselves and their three children Ben, Noah & Matilda to a new home and a new life in the French Alps. This is a plan and a move that has been in train for several years, and they are now in their new home. I wish them every possible success in this brave and inspirational endeavour, and I look forward to having Vicki on the show in a years' time to tell us how it's going and share her story. Nick's musical journey has had as many turns as his personal journey and he came up with a great set of song selections: 70's Kenny Rogers The Gambler 80's Guns N'Roses You Could Be Mine 90's Sisters of Mercy More00's Foo Fighters The Pretender10's Pete Tong/Jules Buckley/Maxi Jazz Insomnia 20's Jackie Wilson (Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher These selections and a song from every artist mentioned is included in this Spotify Playlist. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4LGLLlIg3V802CAOBLl1oY?si=c5bc8bff90fd48e4

You ever heard you never wanna watch sausage being made? Apparently, watching Governmental entities at work is similar, if you watched the Knox County Commission's July 26, 2021 meeting it was great theater. Unless you had worked for a year and your plan, fell. That is what happened with the changes Commission Chairman Larsen Jay wanted for the Knox County Merit System and Council, his best laid plans fell. Yup, we talk about all of that. Not sure I need to explain more than what's in the title. There's a point along the promenade at Bexhill-on-Sea where the pull of the crashing waves outweighs the ice cream hubbub underneath the pavilion. Where no matter your age, you'll find yourself leap from the walkway and begin the short steep shingle scrunching journey down towards the sea. It's a point, buffeted by a salt-scented onshore breeze, that has no need for sign or marker. No need for a call or shout. A turn-off, from the flat walkway, where you simply follow the invisible tracks of everyone who's ever been, and fall headlong into your own childhood dream. We saw in the distance a man walking across the beach with his child, a kite bobbing in the sky in front of them. We jumped down. We strode in giant steps steep down the shingle. We followed the old wooden groyne and stopped when it stopped, at the water's edge, beside the foam fizzing waves. Standing so near to the surf zone we could feel it. The weight of the sea. Thudding the shingle through our feet. How can anything matter in the face of such weight and movement? We could hear the waves rolling in, interlacing, unfurling and breaking. Swooshing in from left to right, pushed by force of current and prevailing wind. This is the sound of longshore drift. The reason the beach is bisected by groynes. We listened, and marvelled, at the gloriousness of the waves as they raced up the beach to meet us.

A new film tells the story of a villa in Bexhill-on-Sea which played host to an extraordinary finishing school, where the children of elite Nazis such as Himmler and von Ribbentrop learned English (while doing Nazi salutes and celebrating the Fuhrer’s birthday). Author and historian Guy Walters talks to author Adrian Weale on why the school existed at all - and the inglorious history of British believers who supported Hitler and the Third Reich.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Donald Macleod explores the life and music of the English composer Ruth Gipps. Ruth Gipps was born in Bexhill-on-Sea in 1921. Her Swiss-born mother was an accomplished pianist and, recognising her daughter’s aptitude, taught her piano from an early age. Gipps was four years old when she gave her first public performance, at Grotrian Hall in London. It was from that moment on, she said later, that she knew without a shadow of a doubt, that playing the piano was her job and that she wanted to be a composer. A highly gifted and versatile musician, on 25th March 1945, Gipps took part in a public concert as the soloist in Glazunov’s Piano Concerto before re-joining the woodwind section of the City of Birmingham Orchestra as an oboist for the premiere of her first symphony. Four more symphonies were to follow. But a troublesome injury to her hand, which she had sustained in childhood, brought her career as a concert pianist to an end in the 1950s. By this stage she had achieved some notable successes as a composer. The recipient of several composition prizes, an early high point was the selection of her orchestral work “Knight in Armour” by Sir Henry Wood for the Last Night of the Proms broadcast in 1942. Awarded a doctorate in music in 1947, Gipps held teaching posts at London’s Trinity College of Music, the Royal College of Music and Kingston Polytechnic and did terms as Chair of both the Composers’ Guild and the newly founded British Music Information Centre. There’s little doubt though that Gipps faced considerable gender discrimination in several of the fields in which she excelled. On discovering her enjoyment of conducting, she overcame this by founding two orchestras, the London Repertoire Orchestra in 1955, and then the Chanticleer Orchestra. A composition pupil of Vaughan Williams, Gipps defined her music as, “a follow-on from her teacher, Bliss and Walton, the three giants of British music since the Second World War.” While all these composers can be heard in her music, her music has its own distinctive and original qualities. Publicly outspoken, Gipps remained firmly anti-modernist. She regarded 12-tone music, serial music, electronic music and avant-garde music as utter rubbish. From the late 1950s the musical establishment felt her music was out of step with the times, and they bypassed her work. She did have some admirers, including Sir Arthur Bliss, whom she had first met in 1942, who continued to support and admire her music but in general it fell to her own resourcefulness to get her music heard, arranging performances, which she would then conduct with her own orchestras. Across the week Donald Macleod is joined by Victoria Rowe, the keeper of Gipps’ archive and her daughter-in-law. Together they build a picture of Gipps as a child performer, a young student, an educator, a conductor and a composer. The series features specially recorded material from the BBC’s performing groups, including Gipps’ second, third and fourth symphonies. There’s also a brand-new recording of Cringlemire Garden, for string orchestra, and two more new releases, both of which explore her chamber music. All three recordings are planned for release later this year, to mark the centenary year of her birth. The Royal Pavilion — a palace commissioned by Prince George in the late 1700s — is the icon of Brighton & Hove. It draws hundreds of thousands of tourists from all over the world and is front-and-centre in the Council logo. The city itself may be the U.K.'s most forward-thinking and liberal: the Brighton Pavilion constituency has the U.K.'s only Green Party M.P., and the city is often considered the ‘Queer Capital' of the U.K.Without this building, Brighton may well have ended up just like its neighbouring former fishing towns — Hastings, Eastbourne, Newhaven, Bexhill, Worthing — conservative, sleepy. Instead, the city of today is vibrant, queer, liberal — an oddity. The Prince (Later King) George's investment in the then village through his Pavilion set the stage for this transformation. But the Pavilion is also an icon of the colonialist ideology of the time — an ideology which the present management of the building doesn't acknowledge. In this episode, we discuss what the Royal Pavilion means for modern-day Brighton.

UNEXPLAINED MYSTERIES with bestselling author and researcher Steph Young
The Headlines said, ‘60-year-old found dead on beach was involved in the occult and lived with former King of the Witches Alex Sanders.’ It was the year 2000. Local Newspaper, the Brighton & Hove Argus asked, ‘Was beach death black magic? Victim said to be obsessed with outer space,’ and continued, ‘A man who had been involved in witchcraft for 25 years was found washed up dead on a beach at Rustington, West Sussex, an inquest heard yesterday.’ The Guardian reported; ‘His body was discovered washed up beside a symbol marked out in the sand. A sword was found nearby. He had lived with the former king of black witches, Alex Saunders.’ His death is an Unexplained mystery. The inquest at Worthing, West Sussex, heard how Derek Taylor, 60, of Bexhill-on-Sea, had been involved in witchcraft since 1975. Mr Taylor’s former wife Anna, said at the inquest that by the time their marriage ended, Taylor had become obsessed with witchcraft, and she had split up with him several times, she said, because of his obsession with the King of the Witches, Alex Sanders. “He wanted to come back to me but he was very ill. Jesus states how important it is that when we pray and fast we ensure that we are doing so from pure heart motives. Jesus through the Lord’s prayer gives us a pattern for our own personal prayer times. Through the preach the speaker emphasized the need for us all to give time to personal prayer and sometimes fasting. He encouraged us each to go deeper with God in our personal times with Him in order that we may grow as disciples and become more like Jesus.
This Sunday was the first time Bexhill venue met for a Sunday meeting. It’s an exciting and challenging time for King’s and we need to remind ourselves of Gods promises. Isaiah 54:1-5 contains great promises for us to grab hold of as we consider joy, expansion and confidence. It reminds us of our reliance on God in all things and that we get to play a part as well. As William Carey said: “Expect great things from God, attempt great things for God.”
We see throughout the Bible that God has a big vision. God wants King's Church involved in His purposes and plans: He has a part for us to play corporately and individually. As a church we have a rich 40-year history and we're looking forward to taking the next steps with Him. This is done in numerous ways every day, but there are two key áreas Paul focused on here. Firstly, the move towards becoming one church with four venues, and specifically the Bexhill venue launch. Secondly, in launching Connect Groups across each of the venues. These two steps will help strengthen the health of King's and reach new communities as we move closer to them.
