This podcast first released to our Powerful Friendz on Patreon! Become a Powerful Friend today, and get access to our exclusive, and early-release podcasts as they come out! You'll also avoid the annoying ads that pepper this version of the podcast! It's a no-brainer!In this episode of Luminous Beings, we discuss whether or not the bad guys in Star Wars always need a superweapon. Is it just par for the course that the people of the galaxy are in constant fear of total, instant annihilation at the hands of some weapon of mass destruction? Or are there subtler, less destructive, but no less terrifying ways to scare people straight? Have a listen and let us know what you think!
That devil Jebel has the rebel rabble troubled but what is Chris Radtke proposing? We let the guest commentator speak.
Discussed in this show: Greetings friends. We had some concerns about this week's show. The topics of race, gender, violence against marginalized communities, pervasive, systemic racism with tendrils so deep into the foundation of the systems we've built that places ostensibly created to mete out justice with impartiality have instead reinforced inequity and inequality, institutionalizing bias against race, gender, and class, that we end up codifying exclusion to the point of excess. How in the world could we be equipped to discuss these things? What makes us think we have the expertise? How is it that we would purport to know anything, or to preach to others about how it should be done? Well, in truth, we aren't equipped. We openly admit that we are not experts. We do not have the answers to problems so complex as this. So while we do not commit to knowing or having the answers, we can commit to this: We do this podcast because we want to know. We want to challenge each other to see the world through eyes as clear as possible. That means interrogating our ideas and understanding our personal biases and how they inform our world view. It means listening. It means asking questions. It means taking risks and asking hard questions, and it means being prepared for what the answer really is. So, please enjoy the show with the caveat that we know there are voices that can and should be represented in this conversation. We're working to make that happen. Is your voice missing? Reach out: hello@betterleft.net Your opinion is important and vital, both to us and to the world at large. Thanks for listening. This week we delve into the world of fanedits; recuts of original works to give them a whole new interpretation. We start with Bateman Begins: An American Psycho (2009) which blends several Christian Bale movies together to jarring effect. Next up is two Darren Aronofsky stories about performing arts spliced into one with Memories Alone (2013). Finally, we watch an edit that came from Nerdwriter1’s critique of Passengers (2016), which takes a single source and improves on a significant narrative issue by reordering the footage. (SPOILERS for Passengers)Also: Batman Begins (2005) + American Psycho (2000) + The Machinist (2004) + The Dark Knight (2008). Christian rants. The green apple splatters. Men in the Cities. Jennifer Jason Leigh. The Wrestler (2008) + Black Swan (2010). Marisa Tomei. Baby Bucky. Rushing or dragging? Dennis Haysbert. Event Horizon (1997). Nice guy. Masters of Sex (2013). The Total Perspective Vortex. We play a game of “Mash Me Up”. Topher Grace’s Star Wars: Always.

This episode contains: We recorded this ep on a Sunday. Devon’s been a single dad for the weekend and tell a little about it. This Week in Space: Scientists are going to be able to use gravitational waves to calculate the Hubble Constant. The two previous methods, using super nova and the microwave background radiation of the universe have yielded conflicting results so this will hopefully find the true rate of expansion. The gravitational waves are produced form colliding neutron stars. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2019/02/190214115549.htm Sweet Emotion: Steven finds a list of names of emotions we didn’t know had names. We go through most of them and discuss how they make us feel. https://www.geeksaresexy.net/2019/02/25/23-emotions-people-feel-but-cant-explain/ Sci-Fi: We talk about Umbrella Academy. Devon thinks his expectations were too high. It was still okay. Devon has also finally started watching this season of Star Trek: Discovery. It’s good but still flawed. The new/temporary captain is a lot better and they are trying to get into more of the moral questions that the older shows did. Also, the Mandalorian has finished filming and the Star Wars park at Disney is looking pretty cool. We also talk about Star Wars: Always. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JdoWJywrOuw

EPISODE IX filming is complete and J.J. Abrams made his first comments since the shooting wrapped at a recent charity event. We analyze what J.J. had to say and dive deep into STAR WARS references from the Abrams-produced ABC series “Lost”. Is anxiety for the reveals of the Episode IX title and trailer getting to be a little tiresome? We discuss! Also, we review recent interview highlights with Episode IX newcomers Naomi Ackley and Richard E. Grant. Star Wars actors and references populated the Academy Awards this year and we rundown everything we noticed in the network broadcast of the show. STAR WARS ALWAYS is an amazing new trailer compiling footage from every Star Wars film, and we provide a full review of this Topher Grace/Jeff Yorkes produced tribute to the Saga. The RFR Voice Mail Hotline is packed with great listener feedback leading us to discuss and debate such diverse topics like The Clone Wars revival, Episode IX speculation, the Mace Windu/Palpatine confrontation from REVENGE OF THE SITH and more.
