Far From Heaven: what your character doesn't want

This season, I am focused on stories with negative or neutral character arcs. Sometimes, finding out what a character doesn't want is the first step to discovery. On the surface, Cathy Whitaker has a perfect life. However, it's a shallow life. Cathy's choices are symbolically represented by her husband, Frank, and her gardener, Raymond. The two male characters are interesting external representations of Cathy's internal choices. There's a small amount of exposition in Far From Heaven, but when it features, it's done straightforwardly and with simplicity. -M“The interesting events in Cathy's arc happen side by side in the movie. She shows an interest in Raymond at the same time, she discovers Frank with another man. While Cathy is trying to maintain one life, she's also growing in another part of her life.” - Melanie HillRelated Story Nerd EpisodesThe Accidental Tourist (Season 5, Episode 3) For access to writing templates and worksheets, and more than 70 hours of training (all for free), subscribe to Valerie's Inner Circle. To learn to read like a writer, visit Melanie's website.Follow Valerie on X, Instagram and Threads @valerie_francisFollow Melanie on X, Instagram and Facebook @MelanieHillAuthor

Fortunes change with the seasons in this 2002 exploration of social consequences set in 1950s Hartford, Connecticut. Kathy Whittaker, played by Julianne Moore, achieves peak surburbia just as her husband Frank (Dennis Quaid) begins having gay dalliances and Raymond, a new gardener, awakens Kathy's need for romantic connection. That Raymond, played by Dennis Haysbert, is Black, allows Kathy to experience an instructive dose of otherness on her visit with him to the Black parts of town. This translates to very real social shunning once her bigoted peers learn of her relationship, and Kathy's standing is threatened on nearly all sides. Haynes serves up this compelling parable in the unblemished jewel-tones and maudlin violins of mid-century melodrama. With dialogue as stiff as Frank's starched collars juxtaposed with unexpectedly naturalistic performances, more than a few scenes combust to devastating effect within the button-down milieu. Dave delights in the throw-back nod to Douglas Sirk and the genre of the ‘women's picture,' and in the uncanny blend of cliches and earnest heartbreak. Jeremy questions the narrative goals at work in the movie, musing on the resistance the film offers to any easy moral judgments. Did Kathy change, or was she a fish-out-of-water the whole time? Is the audience–or even the whole film–complicit in a white lady pity-party? And does anyone who lives in a split-level house still wear a tux to their own holiday party?

We're heading into the great outdoors on this episode of BEHIND THE LENS with films about self-discovery, friendship, and family as we talk about SUMMER CAMP with CASTILLE LANDON and WILD EYED AND WICKED with GORDON FOXWOOD. First up is my exclusive interview with writer/director CASTILLE LANDON talking about the fun-filled comedic gem SUMMER CAMP which stars legends Diane Keaton, Kathy Bates, and Alfre Woodard along with Dennis Haysbert, Eugene Levy, Josh Peck, and Betsy Sodero, just to name a few. Shot on location in North Carolina, the cinematography is as light and bright and textured as the characters and the story. Most impressive about Castille is her attention to detail and emotion in the writing and direction of SUMMER CAMP. I think you'll enjoy hearing what she has to say about the summer fun to be had here. Then writer/director GORDON FOXWOOD is live talking about his new film WILD EYED AND WICKED. Making his feature directorial debut, Gordon draws on elements of his own life with this story, and shoots the film in the lush open fielded horse region of Malvern, Pennsylvania (which is truly beautiful) which is encircled with woods. Listen as we talk about the genesis of this story and bringing it to life on screen, really cool battle sequences involving armor, broadswords, and demonic supernatural, lighting and lensing, the benefit of this specific location, and more. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

Join us as we dive into an impromptu retrospective of Charlie Sheen's filmography, highlight enough trash one liners to fully satiate G-Baby's echolalia input demands for an entire year, and touch on a couple horrific reviews that serve as an indictment of the American people rather than the movie.  Listen in to find out which actor said that working on this film was "probably the worst experience of my life". Michael Mann's 'Heat' is many things; intensely beloved Los Angeles crime saga, De Niro-and-Pacino-onscreen-together curiosity, technically brilliant filmmaking accomplishment, both genre-defining and genre-busting, a tour-de-force of casting, atour-de-force of acting, a tour-de-force of directing, writing, editing, production design, and score....it has enduring presence and continued influence.  It's one of my top 3 favorite films and as such I've resisted doing it on the podcast because it contains the multitudes above. But a recent rewatch allowed me to appreciate some aspects of the film anew, and inspired this episode. I was particularly struck by the women of 'Heat', which is perhaps a surprise to those who subscribe to the "Michael Mann makes guy films women aren't interested in" take.  But the work of Diane Venora, Amy Brenneman, Ashley Judd, and Kim Staunton is worthy of the praise it gets in this episode.  The work each actor put into making their characters fully-formed people with their own often conflicted and conflicting reasons for partnering with a criminal or a driven robbery-homicide detective rises these performances from background to foreground. Their scenes are as alive and filled with energy and emotion as the meticulously filmed and edited heist scenes. And also, the supporting casting is singled out in this episode; from Jon Voight, to Tom Noonan, Bud Cort, Mykleti Williamson, Dennis Haysbert, Tone Loc, Ted Levine, Hank Azaria, William Fichtner, Ricky Harris, Natalie Portman and beyond, Bonnie Timmerman and Michael Mann outdid themselves in searching for, in waiting for, just the right actors capable of going all the way in with characterizations deeper than usual for supporting players in films. 'Heat' is a film that is so praised, so accepted as a masterpiece of its kind that it actually takes some work to watch it free of all that positive baggage and appreciate it all over again as an actor's movie, as one person quoted in the podcast says...it's a film of deep emotional power and human connection.  In this episode, I surprised myself by plugging into these aspects of 'Heat' and hopefully you will enjoy having your filmic receptors tantalized enough to inspire your own re-watch. Please let me know what you think when you do!

In Far From Heaven, Todd Haynes pays loving homage to sumptuous 1950's Douglas Sirk melodramas. This movie is actually more ambitious than anything Sirk ever did though. Haynes tackles multiple controversies in his "Issues Film", including closeted homosexuality and romance between a black man & a white woman. The actors---especially Julianne Moore---are excellent. Moore, Dennis Quaid and Dennis Haysbert play it very close to the chest and they make their director's deliberately phony-sounding dialogue come across as true and accurate. These characters have three-dimensions and many shades of grey and they all get hurt by the way society was back then...and in some ways still is. Incidentally, we neglected to mention that Haynes himself is gay. We also skated over the horrible act of conversion therapy, which no one should have ever had to go through. And we didn't make the connection that Moore played ANOTHER desperately suppressed '50s housewife in her other 2002 Oscar nomination (The Hours). “Don't let yourself get attached to anything you are not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds flat if you feel the heat around the corner….” – Neil McCauley, 1995And that's the apparent thesis for one of the most beloved films of the past thirty years spoken by living legend Robert DeNiro sitting across from fellow living legend Al Pacino.  Or is it really the main theme of the movie?  Maybe it's just something cool-sounding that a tough guy says but doesn't really follow through on….director Michael Mann examines that very question among so many others during this almost three hour crime epic focusing on the brewing conflict between two self-obsessed master tacticians on both sides of the law…and the women who love them….along with every one else whose lives they impact.  This STACKED cast also includes Val Kilmer, Diana Venora, Amy Brenneman, Tom Sizemore, Jon Voight, Wes Studi, Dennis Haysbert, Mykelti Williamson, Danny Trejo, and Ted Levine among SO many others.  Let's find out if the action IS really the juice…..WARNING: ADULT LANGUAGE THROUGHOUT MOVIE CLIPSHost: Geoff Gershon  Editors: Geoff and Ella GershonProducer: Marlene Gershonhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

The Next Reel Film Podcast Master Feed

Gina Prince-Bythewood looked at her first film as a When Harry Met Sally... type of story that followed a pair of young people – Monica and Quincy – as they both worked on furthering their basketball careers. The film was supported by The Sundance Institute and Spike Lee came on as an executive producer to help get it made. We're glad everything came together for this film because it's wonderful. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we kick off a new series about Sports with Prince-Bythewood's 2000 film Love & Basketball. It's easy to fall for Love & Basketball. Prince-Bythewood followed through on her When Harry Met Sally... story perfectly. We meet Monica and Quincy as new neighbors and instantly fall for them as friends. The fact that they develop a romantic relationship over time works, but only because we buy that friendship so strongly. Small details, like him sneaking over to sleep on her floor to get away from his fighting parents, highlight so perfectly moments that Prince-Bythewood captures to help us buy into this. It helps that she cast Sanaa Lathan and Omar Epps, two incredibly beautiful and charismatic actors, to play the parts as well. They play the roles well, both as basketball players and as friends who become romantically involved. They're perfect. Of course the rest of the cast works just as well – Alfre Woodard, Harry Lennix, Dennis Haysbert, and Debbi Morgan play the parents and they all bring something to the table. The child versions of our leads are great. And the basketball is all great. It's a film that deals with the challenges of relationships when success changes hands from one to the other. It looks at the way women and men are treated in sports differently. There's the theme of infidelity and how it's used in relationships and destroys them. And there are powerful elements looking at parents and their children and how they relate. It's a strong way to kick off this series. We have a great time talking about it so check it out then tune in. The Next Reel – when the movie ends, our conversation begins!
