Michael Hall: Holding The Reins of Resilience - Healing Warriors Through The Power Of Horses

Holding the Reins of Resilience – Michael Hall's Mission to Help Warriors Heal In this powerful episode, Marcus and Melanie meet with Michael Hall, a retired U.S. Navy SEAL from BUD/S Class 267 and the founder of Hold the Reins, a groundbreaking non-profit organization dedicated to equine-assisted wellness and coaching for special warfare operators. Michael shares his journey from the battlefield to the barn, explaining how his deep love of horses and his firsthand experience with the challenges of military life led him to create Hold the Reins. This program provides early intervention tools to help Navy SEALs, SWCC, and EOD teams develop self-awareness, emotional regulation, communication skills, and goal achievement—all through the incredible connection between humans and horses. With the unique pressures that come with a career in special operations, divorce and suicide rates remain devastatingly high among service members. Michael recognized this crisis and made it his mission to provide a lifeline—a safe space where warriors can regain control, reconnect, and find healing. Now, as he transitions into running Hold the Reins full-time as CEO and counselor, he's determined to give back to the community that shaped him. Tune in to hear Michael's inspiring story, the science behind equine therapy, and how his program is changing lives one ride at a time. In This Episode You Will Hear: • [My dad] asked me blankly one day, “What do you want to do?” It was just one of those things where I just spit out the first thing that my heart said, “I want to be a SEAL.” (8:43) • The Air Force recruiter looked at me, “Well, whatcha been up to since you graduated high school?” I didn't hold anything back. I just gave him anything. He was like, “There's no room for you in our Air Force.” (9:31) • [I saw] this recruiting commercial come on. Helicopters come over the horizon. It said, “We'll take you from high school to flight school.” So, I get in my truck and drove 150 miles to the recruiting office and joined the Navy. (15:41) • That why we started this thing, to help guys hit the pressure relief valve. (17:45) • The world's too slow. We're moving too fast on the inside, and we start trying to numb that down, and we do it in unproductive ways. • Our organization is called Hold the Reigns. We use horsemanship to teach guys how to emotionally regulate the present moment focus, and allow them to narrate their own story to us. (19:08) • Were the only organization, possibly in the nation that I know of, that's run by frogmen. (19:28) • I feel like God has created in me the way, or persona that's gonna be able to help guys. (23:23) • You can't team guy your way around horses. (26:24) • I've dealt with a lot of really dangerous horses and people made them that way. (43:18) • That's kind of a surprise thing we do – we put them in a really vulnerable situation, so you're no longer the hairy-chested, bullet-proof frogman. You're now just a little worried about your safety. (54:14) • A horse is completely honest. They do not know how to lie. As a military veteran or first responder, you need to be planning and implementing strategies to prepare for your transition into civilian life. In this Flashback Friday episode of the Transition Drill Podcast, we recap Episode 45 with Guy Smith. Guy was born and raised in South Central Los Angeles. Though gangs were all around him, a strong and influential grandmother and family kept him out of the gang life. Growing up he was into martial arts and wrestling, so after high school he ended up in San Diego coaching and fitness training. Many of the clients he was working with were Special Operations members and they convinced him to join the Navy. Guy enlisted in the Navy and served 6 years as SWCC and deployed multiple times to the Middle East. Injuries and family responsibilities caused him to leave active duty in 2015 but he did 3 additional years in the reserves. After leaving the military he struggled with redefining his mission and what his identity is along with struggling with alcoholism. He considers himself fortunate to have found the Honor Foundation and graduating from their program. Today he continues to support The Honor Foundation along with The Navy Seal Foundation. Today Guy is a IFBB professional bodybuilder and fitness trainer, helping people reach their personal and fitness goals. Stew Smith takes a common question:  See https://www.stewsmithfitness.com for more articles, training programs, coaching, and more. Depending on a military recruit's athletic history, the preparation process may differ from one person to the next. Endurance athletes do well on calisthenics and cardio fitness testing, but not on strength, power, speed, and agility. The opposite is true for the strength athlete, who struggles with running, swimming, and higher repetition calisthenics ranges needed for good scores on fitness tests. Here is an email from a Navy recruit who is preparing for the Navy PST to secure a contract in one of the fields (SEAL, SWCC, EOD/Diver, Rescue Swimmer, or SARC):Hi Mr. Smith. I've got a question. Since I'm training for a PST, my weakness is mainly in running and CSS swimming technique, but I have solid calisthenics numbers (pushups 90, Situps 95, Pullups 22). Should I focus more on running/swimming workouts and stop lifting and doing calisthenics?  Both my run and swim are over 11 minutes at this point. Any recommendations?Calisthenics and Cardio training go hand and hand and that is what you need to focus on. Since you need to work on your running and swimming the most, do them first in the workout, then follow the workout with the testing calisthenics on upper body days and squats and lunges on lower body days. But the best option is to get on a proven plan that has resulted in more spec ops success in history:  Seehttps://www.stewsmithfitness.com/blogs/news/get-ready-to-get-through-the-training-with-my-3-part-series

His years at Colgate University were focused on athletic endeavors such as competitive swimming, rowing and triathlon racing, interrupted by brief episodes of academic activity. After graduation from “the Gate” Mark started his professional career as a CPA with Coopers & Lybrand in New York City. Clients included luminous and no-longer existent financial firms such as Solomon Brothers and Paine Webber. Four painful years later, with an MBA from NYU Stern School of Business in his briefcase, he left behind the suit to pursue his inner vision to become a Navy SEAL officer. He was 26 when he graduated as honor-man (#1 ranked trainee) of his SEAL BUD/s class 171. Mark was fortunate to serve with many great men and women on active duty for nine year and in the reserves for eleven…retiring at the rank of Commander in 2011. After leaving active duty in 1997, Mark started his second business career as an entrepreneur. He co-founded the successful Coronado Brewing Company and launched NavySEALs.com in the year he left the active duty Navy. NavySEALs.com is the leading web site for gear and information about the SEALs. US Tactical was next, gaining contracts with Naval Special Warfare Group ONE for training support, and the Navy Recruiting Command for a nationwide mentoring program for SEAL, SWCC, EOD and Diver candidates. Mark's business career was interrupted by a stint as an Adjunct Professor of Leadership at the University of San Diego, where he was pursuing his Doctorate in Leadership, then by a one year recall to active duty in 2004. The recall took him to Baghdad with SEAL Team One to conduct a special project for Naval Special Warfare Command surrounding the role of the USMC in Special Operations. In 2007 he launched his CrossFit affiliate and the now internationally known SEALFIT program to provide transformational personal and team training experiences. The training utilizes an integrated warrior development model he developed, called Unbeatable Mind, which draws from his 20 years as a SEAL and business leader, 25 years as a martial artist and 15 years as yoga practitioner. SEALFIT and Unbeatable Mind are uniquely effective at elevating clients to a higher level of operating, thinking and leading – encompassing the full spectrum of human experience – Body, Mind and Spirit in Self, Team and Organization.

Retired Navy Special Operations veteran Dash Wong has seen it all: homelessness, 15 years of service in the Navy Special Forces, beating cancer and losing a lung. But he's never considered himself to be a victim - instead he found strength through circumstances that would break most people down. How did he shift his perspective? He started looking at everything as an opportunity, separated himself from instant gratifications and instant pleasures, and realized that little changes make the biggest difference.Dash joined our host JT to talk about overcoming childhood trauma and using your life lessons to motivate other people. He shares his journey of focusing on habits and mindsets that exemplify the Law of Attraction. Plus, a powerful story about the first time he learned what a “small victory” was at seven years old. After leaving the military he struggled with redefining his mission and his identity, along with struggling with alcoholism. He considers himself fortunate to have found the Honor Foundation and graduating from their program. Today he continues to support The Honor Foundation along with The Navy Seal Foundation. Mark is from upstate New York and did his formal undergraduate education at Colgate University.
