It’s April 20ish - 4/20 - and it’s our 420th podcast. What else are we going to do but talk about the highest calibre of film that American cinema has to offer: the stoner comedy? 2008’s Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay was the long-awaited sequel to the original burger-based road trip movie. Starring John Cho and Kal Penn as two Amsterdam-bound potheads, the film’s surreal storyline was underscored by political and social satire as the film took jabs at the War on Terror, racial stereotyping and profiling, and the presidency of George W. Bush. But does this moveable feast (which also name-checks the Hemingway book) a cure our wanderlust, or does it leave us at stranded the gate?   Spoiler Alert! Spoiler Alert! This episode is a doozy. I am joined by super-friend Jamie Loo and Fin Coe. Fin is the Co-Creative director of the New Colony theatre in Chicago. We discuss one of my favorite movie stars, John Cho. We discuss five of his films: Better Luck Tomorrow, Harold & Kumar, Star Trek, Columbus, and Searching. Fin and Jamie also share their perspective on the depictions of Asian-Americans in Hollywood and in the American media in general, and how important it is to tell stories from a broad range of perspectives. Phenomenal conversation about a phenomenal actor and a whole lot more.

Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. Director/producer Timur Bekmambetov has had an interesting career. First appearing on the horror scene with his Russian language NIGHT WATCH and DAY WATCH vampire films, he’s gone on to direct some big Hollywood films including WANTED starring Angelina Jolie and James McAvoy. But starting with 2015’s UNFRIENDED, he has produced a number of computer based films, including the sequel UNFRIENDED: DARK WEB but also his latest SEARCHING. David Kim (John Cho) is a widower, losing his wife to cancer at a young age. His high school aged daughter, Margot (Michelle La), seems like most teenagers. She loves her dad but rather be doing her own thing. When one evening after study group she disappears, David begins an online investigation of her social media accounts and calls to family friends. Getting nowhere she is officially reported as missing and an investigation begins, led by Detective Rosemary Vick. As things are ruled out, foul play and even murder may be at play. Timur Bekmambetov brought on little known director Aneesh Chaganty to helm the project. Starring John Cho and Debra Messing, the film has received strong reviews and has easily earned back its budget along with making fairly good box office. Dark Discussions takes a look at this very unique thriller and gives their thoughts. John Cho is perhaps best known for playing Sulu in the “Star Trek” reboots and Harold in the “Harold and Kumar” films. His new movie “Searching” takes place entirely on computer screens. Cho’s performance is one of the reasons why it is a successful piece of true cinema and not a novelty. We discuss the unique challenges of performing alone in some scenes and trusting director Aneesh Chaganty to navigate him through the space. We also talk about one of my favorite recent indie films “Columbus” (directed by Kogonada) and the connection he felt with co-star Haley Lu Richardson that truly powers the film.

Fed up with Hollywood's long tradition of overlooking Asian-American actors, Yu started photoshopping John Cho's face on blockbuster movie posters, confronting audiences with their own biases and forcing people to acknowledge the viability of Asian-American actors in leading roles. Two years later, using AI and deepfake technology, he placed Asian-American actors' faces in pivotal scenes from major studio movies, once again challenging our ingrained prejudice.
