Have mercy! But there was no mercy shown when having to confront Mercy (2026) in IMAX! From desktop film auteur Timur Bekmambetov, Mercy (2026) features Detective Chris Raven (Chris Pratt) sitting in a chair trying to prove to artificial intelligence Judge Maddox (Rebecca Ferguson) that he is innocent of murdering his own wife. He's got 90 minutes to do so using all the bells and whistles of a desktop film, and the clock is ticking! He's on FaceTime, he's accessing emails and texts, he's bringing up bodycam footage and security footage, he's trying every technological trick in the book to prove he's less than 92% guilty to avoid execution. Listen to our reactions as this hawt take definitely got heated up!
Chris Pratt's new movie takes us into a time where if you've been accused of a violent crime, no lawyer and no jury for you! “Mercy” is about a new AI criminal justice system that uses its super-duper AI powers to play judge, jury and executioner to those accused of violent crime. The accused are locked into a chair and sit face to face with the Mercy AI system which appears in the form of Rebecca Ferguson who looks better than most judges you'll deal with. The accused then has 90 minutes to prove their innocence, and has the AI power of Mercy at their fingertips to do so. It's a cinematic interpretation of the saying “Someone who is their own lawyer has a fool for a client.” In this movie's case, Pratt is a detective so he's got a bit of criminal investigation experience and he puts it to use after he's the one in the Mercy chair, accused of killing his wife. He gets to look through all the evidence. Call anyone in the law enforcement community and they'll go anywhere you need them to in order to find clues, leads, etc. As Pratt leads this investigation to clear himself, he uncovers a sinister plot. Is it worth finding out more in the theater? Watch this episode to find out! “Mercy” also stars Annabelle Wallis, Chris Sullivan, Kali Reis, Kylie Rogers, Jeff Pierre, Rafi Gavron, Kenneth Choi, Jamie McBride and Ross Gosla. The reigning Academy Award winner for Best Picture joins the show! Legendary producer Charles "Chuck" Roven (Oppenheimer, The Dark Knight Trilogy) sits down with Giles Alderson to discuss his pulsing new sci-fi thriller, Mercy (starring Chris Pratt & Rebecca Ferguson). We discuss: The Mercy Reunion: Bringing Chris Pratt and director Timur Bekmambetov back together 18 years after Wanted. The "Atlas" Model: How to develop and package blockbuster IP outside of the studio system. The Oppenheimer Journey: Lessons learned from producing the Best Picture winner and working with Cillian Murphy.

IT'S WORSE THAN YOU THINK. 2020 was a strange time. We all stayed in our homes. Brian and Alec were doing a different show. And movies were struggling to find new ways to get made. One blooming subgenre, Screenlife, was poised by producer Timur Bekmambetov over the years as the evolution of found footage. With lockdown seemingly indefinite, he was tasked by Universal to prove that this subgenre had enough mileage in it to navigate this unforeseeable future. The resulting film was so historically awful that it came out five years later on Amazon prime after just six days of marketing. Oh boy. Come join Brian, Alec, and special guests Darby (@gwenstacying) and Trey (@HeyGuysItSpidey) as they take a look at what many consider to be one of the worst films in recent memory, Amazon's WAR OF THE WORLDS!

Only Lovers Left Alive is a 2013 fantasy comedy-drama film written and directed by Jim Jarmusch, starring Tilda Swinton, Tom Hiddleston, Mia Wasikowska, Anton Yelchin, Jeffrey Wright, Slimane Dazi, and John Hurt. Benjamin Walker stars as Abraham Lincoln with supporting roles by Dominic Cooper, Anthony Mackie, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Rufus Sewell, and Marton Csokas.

This week Jeff & Dave went to another fun January thriller in the cinema before talking the walk without co-host John. Missing (2022) is standalone sequel to Searching (2022) and is a "desktop" movie, or screen-based thriller. With a bigger budget and time to create another simple mystery thriller completely enriched by it's premise, Missing is the second movie in three weeks (M3GAN) to know what it is and give it to us exactly as we wanted yet in a way we somehow almost didn't know we wanted it. Directed by Timur Bekmambetov, Wanted is the action thriller film loosely based on the comic book miniseries by Mark Millar and J. G. Jones. Luke and Nathan revisit this 2008 flick which stars James McAvoy, Morgan Freeman, and Angelina Jolie. Wesley Gibson (James McAvoy) is an office worker whose life is going nowhere. After his estranged father is murdered, he meets Fox (Angelina Jolie), who recruits him into the Fraternity, a secret society of assassins which takes its orders from Fate itself. Fox and Sloan (Morgan Freeman), the Fraternity's leader, teach Wesley to tap into dormant powers. Though he enjoys his newfound abilities, he begins to suspect that there is more to the Fraternity than meets the eye.
I have been a fan of today's guest since I first saw his mind-blowing film, Night Watch years ago. Timur Bekmambetov is an established director, producer, and writer who has built a name for himself both in his home country, Russia, and here in the U.S., making films, music videos, and commercials. At first glance at his film, I became obsessed with Timur's work and his filmmaking style. He is the producer and director of Day Watch (2006), Wanted (2008), Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter (2012), Profile ( 2021), and many many more.Timur is a jack of all trades. His journey in the industry started with theater production design and soon he got the directing bug. While honing his directing skills, he took up producing which then led to movie production. One of my favorite of his films is the genre-bending Wanted, starring Angelina Jolie, James McCovey, and Morgan Freeman.Wesley Gibson (James McAvoy) is an office worker whose life is going nowhere. After his estranged father is murdered, he meets Fox (Angelina Jolie), who recruits him into the Fraternity, a secret society of assassins that takes its orders from Fate itself. Fox and Sloan (Morgan Freeman), the Fraternity's leader, teach Wesley to tap into dormant powers. Though he enjoys his newfound abilities, he begins to suspect that there is more to the Fraternity than meets the eye.Abraham Lincoln is reinvented as a vampire-killing president in this Timur Bekmambetov-directed action picture starring Benjamin Walker, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Rufus Sewell, and Dominic Cooper. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies author Seth Grahame-Smith adapts his own book for 20th Century Fox. Tim Burton produces alongside Bekmambetov and Jim Lemley.Timur's latest project is Profile. The film was initially released in Russia in 2018 and is set to be released in the US on May 14, 2021.Based on Anna Erelle's non-fiction book, In The Skin of a Jihadist, the film contextualizes our digital life and fears. It explores the role of digital spaces in the recruitment of young European Women by ISIS. British journalist, Amy Whittaker sets on this investigation by creating a Facebook profile under the alias of Melody Nelson along with a persona online of a woman who has recently converted to Islam. The results are thrilling and eye-opening.Profile was shot in a new film language called Screenlife. What is Screenlife?Screenlife is a new format of visual content that has grown from independent projects to full-length, world-renowned films, documentaries, and TV shows. Its main idea is that everything that the viewer sees happens on the computer, tablet, or smartphone screen. All the events unfold directly on the screen of your device. Instead of a film set — there's a desktop, instead of the protagonist's actions — a cursor. If you are involved in video production, cinema, or even video games, Screenlife is a new expressive environment for you, the potential of which is yet to be discovered. Before your eyes, there will be new tools to work with, such as the screen life recorder.Bekmambetov produced the Screenlife film Unfriended, in which the action takes place on the screens of protagonists' computers. With a budget of only $1 million, the movie raised $64 million at the box office worldwide. This new film language is extremely exciting. Timur and I discuss Screenlife, his visual style, his directing process, Hollywood politics, and much more.Enjoy my conversation with Timur Bekmambetov.
“We had such potential. Such promise. But we squandered our gifts, our intelligence. Our blind pursuit of technology only sped us quicker to our doom. Our world is ending. But life must go on.” In this episode, we discuss Shane Acker's post-apocalyptic animated feature: 9, as well as briefly review the films we logged on our Letterboxd dairies in the past week. — TIME CODES: • 00:00 - INTRO • 01:32 - BASIC FACTS • 03:41 - THE MEAT • 42:03 - WHAT WE WATCHED — 9 (2009) WHEN OUR WORLD ENDED, THEIR MISSION BEGAN. “When 9 first comes to life, he finds himself in a post-apocalyptic world. All humans are gone, and it is only by chance that he discovers a small community of others like him taking refuge from fearsome machines that roam the earth intent on their extinction. Despite being the neophyte of the group, 9 convinces the others that hiding will do them no good.” Directed by Shane Acker and starring Elijah Wood, John C. Reilly, Jennifer Connelly, Christopher Plummer, Crispin Glover, Martin Landau, Fred Tatasciore, Alan Oppenheimer, Tom Kane, and Helen Wilson. Written by Pamela Pettler and Shane Acker, edited by Nick Kenway, cinematography by Kevin R. Movies and television based off comic books are a staple in modern entertainment. The quality may vary, but the quantity can not be denied. When the source material is adapted, it's not uncommon for changes to be made. Some time even major changes. And once in awhile those changes can make the story…better. But not always. Welcome to My Big Fat Pull List's premier episode of Comic vs Adaptation, where in we discuss the differences when the comic pages jump to life on the big, or little, screen and determine which version is better. In this episode we have the difficult task of comparing the 2003 comic book Wanted with its nearly unrecognizable 2008 film version! In 2021, it can be hard to figure out new ways to innovate on film, since it often feels like “it's all been done before”. But today, we're chatting with director Timur Bekmambetov, who found a new way to tell stories and is now deep in “screen life”, a new way of filmmaking that's a great way to connect with younger audiences and push the boundaries of the medium. In this episode, we talk about… Timur's early career and how he got into filmmaking in Russia, which included doing just about every job except acting! What happened when Timur first started getting into more artsy, avant garde movies, and his realization that the only way to tell stories is to be real about fears, dreams, and other vulnerable emotions. How screen life can work with every genre, and examples of types of films Timur has shot in that format. The nuts and bolts of creating screen life films, from how acting is very different (it's about the movement of the cursor or what is typed rather than facial expressions), to how it's filmed, to how it's edited in post. Timur's advice for young filmmakers who want to get involved in this new type of film making.
