Movies and television based off comic books are a staple in modern entertainment. The quality may vary, but the quantity can not be denied. When the source material is adapted, it's not uncommon for changes to be made. Some time even major changes. And once in awhile those changes can make the story…better. But not always. Welcome to My Big Fat Pull List's premier episode of Comic vs Adaptation, where in we discuss the differences when the comic pages jump to life on the big, or little, screen and determine which version is better. In 2021, it can be hard to figure out new ways to innovate on film, since it often feels like “it's all been done before”. But today, we're chatting with director Timur Bekmambetov, who found a new way to tell stories and is now deep in “screen life”, a new way of filmmaking that's a great way to connect with younger audiences and push the boundaries of the medium. In this episode, we talk about… Timur's early career and how he got into filmmaking in Russia, which included doing just about every job except acting! What happened when Timur first started getting into more artsy, avant garde movies, and his realization that the only way to tell stories is to be real about fears, dreams, and other vulnerable emotions. How screen life can work with every genre, and examples of types of films Timur has shot in that format. The nuts and bolts of creating screen life films, from how acting is very different (it's about the movement of the cursor or what is typed rather than facial expressions), to how it's filmed, to how it's edited in post. Timur's advice for young filmmakers who want to get involved in this new type of film making. I have been a fan of today’s guest since I first saw his mind-blowing film, Night Watch years ago. Timur Bekmambetov is an established director, producer, and writer who has built a name for himself both in his home country, Russia, and here in the U.S., making films, music videos, and commercials. At first glance at his film, I became obsessed with Timur’s work and his filmmaking style. He is the producer and director of Day Watch (2006), Wanted (2008), Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter (2012), Profile ( 2021) and many many more.Timur is a jack of all trade. His journey in the industry started with theater production design and soon he got the directing bug. While honing his directing skills, he took up producing which then led to movie production.  One of my favorite of his films is the genre bending Wanted, starring Angelina Jolie, James McCovey and Morgan Freeman.Wesley Gibson (James McAvoy) is an office worker whose life is going nowhere. After his estranged father is murdered, he meets Fox (Angelina Jolie), who recruits him into the Fraternity, a secret society of assassins which takes its orders from Fate itself. Fox and Sloan (Morgan Freeman), the Fraternity's leader, teach Wesley to tap into dormant powers. Though he enjoys his newfound abilities, he begins to suspect that there is more to the Fraternity than meets the eye.Abraham Lincoln is reinvented as a vampire-killing president in this Timur Bekmambetov-directed action picture starring Benjamin Walker, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Rufus Sewell, and Dominic Cooper. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies author Seth Grahame-Smith adapts his own book for 20th Century Fox. Tim Burton produces alongside Bekmambetov and Jim Lemley.Timur's latest project is Profile. The film was initially released in Russia in 2018 and is set to be released in the US on May 14, 2021.Based on Anna Erelle's non-fiction book, In The Skin of a Jihadist, the film contextualizes our digital life and fears. It explores the role of digital spaces in the recruitment of young European Women by ISIS. British journalist, Amy Whittaker sets on this investigation by creating a Facebook profile under the alias of Melody Nelson along with a persona online of a woman who has recently converted to Islam. The results are thrilling and eye-opening.Profile was shot in a new film language called Screenlife. What is Screenlife?Screenlife is a new format of visual content that has grown from independent projects to full-length, world-renowned films, documentaries and TV shows. Its main idea is that everything that the viewer sees happens on the computer, tablet or smartphone screen. All the events unfold directly on the screen of your device. Instead of film set — there’s a desktop, instead of protagonist’s actions — a cursor. If you are involved in video production, cinema or even video games, Screenlife is a new expressive environment for you, the potential of which is yet to be discovered. Before your eyes, there will be new tools to work with, such as the screenlife recorder.Bekmambetov produced the Screenlife film Unfriended, in which the action takes place on the screens of protagonists’ computers. With a budget of only $1 million, the movie raised $64 million at the box office worldwide. This new film language is extremely exciting. Timur and I discuss Screenlife, his visual style, his directing process, Hollywood politics and much more.Enjoy my conversation with Timur Bekmambetov.

The method was created by Timur Bekmambetov, whose name Tyler doesn't even try to pronounce correctly. Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. Director/producer Timur Bekmambetov has had an interesting career. First appearing on the horror scene with his Russian language NIGHT WATCH and DAY WATCH vampire films, he’s gone on to direct some big Hollywood films including WANTED starring Angelina Jolie and James McAvoy. But starting with 2015’s UNFRIENDED, he has produced a number of computer based films, including the sequel UNFRIENDED: DARK WEB but also his latest SEARCHING. David Kim (John Cho) is a widower, losing his wife to cancer at a young age. His high school aged daughter, Margot (Michelle La), seems like most teenagers. She loves her dad but rather be doing her own thing. When one evening after study group she disappears, David begins an online investigation of her social media accounts and calls to family friends. Getting nowhere she is officially reported as missing and an investigation begins, led by Detective Rosemary Vick. As things are ruled out, foul play and even murder may be at play. Timur Bekmambetov brought on little known director Aneesh Chaganty to helm the project. Starring John Cho and Debra Messing, the film has received strong reviews and has easily earned back its budget along with making fairly good box office. Dark Discussions takes a look at this very unique thriller and gives their thoughts. As always we welcome your comments: darkdiscussions@aol.com (written email or attached mp3 files) WWW.DARKDISCUSSIONS.COM

It's another jam-packed and eclectic episode of BEHIND THE LENS as we go dark with UNFRIENDED: DARK WEB, do a summer sizzle with the cast of HOT SUMMER NIGHTS, and revisit LITTLE PINK HOUSE with our special guest, COLIN CUNNINGHAM. First up we hear from the cast of HOT SUMMER NIGHTS. A real summer sizzler from writer/director Elijah Bynum, HOT SUMMER NIGHTS is a coming-of-age tale set against an East Coast beach community and an impending hurricane. (And I don't know which is more volatile – teenaged hormones or a hurricane.) HOT SUMMER NIGHTS is an explosion of beauteous stylized visual (and gorgeous color composition) married to a period-perfect 90's musical montage, serving as the framework for strong performances from Timothee Chalamet, Alex Roe ("The Fith Wave", "Forever My Girl"), Maika Monroe ("Independence Day: Resurgence", "The 5th Wave") and Maia Mitchell ("The Fosters"). Take a listen to excerpts of our exclusive interviews with ALEX ROE, MAIKA MONROE, and MAIA MITCHELL as they talk about their respective attractions to the story and getting into some very different character skins. Then we welcome veteran actor COLIN CUNNINGHAM, one of the stars of LITTLE PINK HOUSE, now available on DVD/On Demand. Listen as Colin talks about the importance of a film like LITTLE PINK HOUSE, a true story that focuses on the issue of eminent domain in the United States, and then balances that with his experiences on a series like "Falling Skies" or "Preacher" or a fun-filled tv-movie like "Mr. St. Nick". Calling in live from the set of his new film, "Bashira", a Japanese horror film, Colin's enthusiasm and excitement for his craft are palpable as he talks about performance and his approach to the industry plus, his overall body of work. We wrap up the show with an excerpt from our exclusive interview with writer/director STEPHEN SUSCO who talks about his new film UNFRIENDED: DARK WEB. Thanks to Timur Bekmambetov, we were introduced to the new film language of "ScreenLife" or "Screen Reality" with "Unfriended." Stephen now continues to explore ScreenLife with UNFRIENDED: DARK WEB. Take a listen as he talks about not only his approach in taking ScreenLife to the next level, but in developing a story rooted within the very fears of so many, the Dark Web. http://behindthelensonline.net http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

The WOW factor is at an all-time high with this week's BEHIND THE LENS! First up, hear from the innovative and visionary director Timur Bekmambetov and his new project "Screenshare Filmmaking" – verite storytelling set entirely on the screens of digital devices – and the workshop he is hosting at SXSW this year. There will be eight two-person teams chosen to participate; four from the United States who will be brought to Austin to SXSW to work in-person, and four teams from overseas who will participate remotely. This is an opportunity not to be missed. So filmmakers, take a listen to today's show and hear more about the workshop from Timur, then go to www.screensharefilms.com to apply before February 24, 2016! This is truly a golden ticket for filmmakers! And then we've got a half hour that all my TCM Party pals out there will love as Susan Claassen joins me at the midpoint of the show to talk about costume design, this year's Oscar costume contenders and, the legendary Edith Head. For over 12 years, Susan has travelled the country with her one woman show, "A Conversation with Edith Head" and it is a phenom for classic film fans. As you can see from the show banner below, Susan and Edith could be twins separated by birth. Her knowledge of Edith Head, film and costuming is staggering and she shares it with us on BEHIND THE LENS. One of my favorite moments today? Susan reading a letter from "Edie" to attendees/presenters at the 40th Academy Awards about "appropriate attire." And in keeping with a costume design thread, take a listen to excerpts of my exclusive interview with Sandy Powell, a double Oscar nominee this year for CINDERELLA and CAROL. http://behindthelensonline.net http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

Zdravstvuyte tovarisch! This week on Alcohollywood, we’re taking all you comrades for an Eastern bloc party with the 2010 Russian superhero flick Black Lightning! Produced by Timur Bekmambetov (of Night Watch and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter fame), this Russian love letter to blockbuster superhero movies sees Dima, a down on his luck college student, suddenly inherit a flying Volgo automobile modified by Cold War scientists using magic fuel. Slowly learning its powers, he uses it to become the superhero Black Lightning and save Moscow from the machinations of the evil diamond magnate Prof. Viktor Kuptsov. A derivative yet strangely charming blend of every Western superhero film of the last decade, combined with Russia’s love of fur-lined clothing and dance clubs, make Black Lightning a film worth checking out. Don’t forget to listen to our episode and check out our custom cocktail and drinking rules either!

Since the inception of DVDs more than a dozen years ago, home video Special Features - those wonderful and sometimes not so wonderful “extras” which seemingly validate purchasing the movie after you’ve seen it at the theater three months prior - have greatly improved in style and content. Case in point: The special features on Paramount’s Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol Blu-ray are state of the art. Tops in not only in style, but in menu presentation. The team that put together the disc clearly had it’s menus in mind while Ghost Protocol was being filmed. In Extra Features 19, John and I get to talking about the Ghost Protocol disc, as well as the impressive We Bought a Zoo Blu-ray, which has a couple neat special features from Cameron Crowe and Co. We also discuss the new titles: Kate & Leopold: The Special Edition (which is a fine film and a guilty pleasure, and I’ll stand by that claim), The Witches of Oz, Conversation Piece (starring Burt Lancaster), The Siege of Firebase Gloria (from 20th Century Fox’s video on demand), the French film The Conquest, Timur Bekmambetov’s The Darkest Hour; and The Marvel 3-Movie Collection (Thor, Hulk and Dr Strange) and The Marvel Movie Collection: Ultimate Avengers - both from Lionsate Home Video.
