Mark Lee started MarqVision while earning his J.D. at Harvard Law, convinced that brand protection was about to break. Counterfeiting and IP theft had grown into a $3 trillion global problem, but enforcement still relied on manual takedowns and fragmented systems. He believed AI could change that. Five years later, MarqVision has raised $90M, doubled revenue in a single year, and is now trusted by 350+ global brands including LVMH, MLB, MrBeast, Lush, Allbirds, Casetify, Panda Express, and Stüssy. The company is helping brands move beyond reactive enforcement toward measurable “cleanliness” across marketplaces — a shift Mark believes will define brand protection in 2026 and beyond.   Make sure to check them out at: https://www.marqvision.com   Check out my new book on Amazon: https://amzn.to/4kRKGTX Watch our mini-doc - Starting Small: The Raw Truth Behind Entrepreneurship and the American Dream: https://youtu.be/eHuq93wIxs0?si=eDB-ycngvWNapRLO Visit Starting Small Media: https://startingsmallmedia.org/ Subscribe to exclusive Starting Small emails: https://startingsmallmedia.org/newsletter-signup   Follow Starting Small: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/startingsmallpod/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Startingsmallpod/?modal=admin_todo_tour LinkedIn: http://linkedin.com/in/cameronnagle

Peggy Cherng never set out to work in fast food, but her engineering mindset transformed how millions of Americans eat. Journalist Zing Tsjeng and BBC business editor Simon Jack trace Peggy Cherng's journey: from electrical engineering and simulating battlefields, to co-founding Panda Express with her husband Andrew and becoming a billionaire. By applying data and rigorous standardisation, Peggy Cherng helped turn a single mall food-court experiment into the largest Chinese fast-food chain in the USA, with their orange chicken becoming a cultural staple. Good Bad Billionaire is the podcast that explores the lives of the super-rich and famous, tracking their wealth, philanthropy, business ethics, and success. There are leaders who made their money in Silicon Valley, on Wall Street and in high street fashion. From iconic celebrities and CEOs to titans of technology, the podcast unravels tales of fortune, power, economics, ambition and moral responsibility. Simon and Zing put their subjects to the test with a playful, totally unscientific scorecard — then hand the verdict over to you: are they good, bad, or simply billionaires? San Francisco's largest mall just closed its doors—a day early, no less—after nearly 20 years of slow-motion collapse. What started as a 1.5 million square foot retail destination plummeted from $1.2 billion in value to a pathetic $133 million credit sale that nobody even wanted to bid on. We're talking about a mall so bad that human waste in the elevators increased 400%, Panda Express was literally sued to leave, and shoppers chose Amazon over risking the experience. This video covers the entire saga: the foreclosure nobody bid on, Westfield handing back the keys, and Mayor Lurie's uphill battle to figure out what to do with this massive monument to failed progressive policies. The conversion-to-housing dreamers clearly haven't done the math—retrofitting 1.5 million square feet of interior retail space with no windows makes zero economic sense. So what's next for this albatross? A soccer stadium? A permanent reminder of what happens when policy ignores reality? Drop your predictions below and subscribe for updates as this disaster unfolds. Is anyone surprised a mall known for elevator excrement couldn't compete with online shopping?

The recent surge in users in the United States abandoning TikTok after the announcement of a so-called "Americanized" joint venture offers an ironic footnote to the long-running political drama around the popular video-sharing app. For years, some US politicians have claimed that TikTok represents a grave "national security threat". Invoking slogans such as "privacy leakage risks" and "China threatens US data security" they created the specter of "Big Brother spying" on users of the app in the US. Yet, now that a deal has been forced through for US capital to acquire control of the app in the country under these pretexts, it is not China that users in the US appear to fear. It is the US elites and government. According to data from market intelligence company Sensor Tower, the daily average of US users deleting TikTok has jumped nearly 150 percent over the five days from Thursday to Monday compared with the previous three months. The spike followed TikTok's announcement that its US services would be operated by a new joint venture controlled by US capital, with a new leadership and a majority-US board. The message from users has been blunt: the promised "security solution" has only deepened anxiety. Social media skepticism flared after users were prompted to agree to an updated privacy policy. Critics seized on language describing potential data collection involving sensitive personal information. Yet archived versions of the policy show that this language was already present months earlier. What changed was not the policy itself, but who would ultimately sit behind the curtain of control. For years as it tried to wrest control of the company from its Chinese parent ByteDance, Washington claimed it was acting to protect US-based users from "foreign surveillance". Now, the same users are openly questioning whether the real risk lies in the concentration of data and influence in the hands of domestic political and financial elites. As one commenter in an Associated Press analysis put it, "There is something inherently wrong with allowing the people who control government policy to invest in the outcome. I believe it's called lining their own pockets." The structure of the deal does little to dispel such doubts. The new TikTok US entity is backed by Oracle, Silver Lake and the Emirati investment company MGX, each holding 15 percent, alongside other US investors linked to powerful technology and media interests. ByteDance retains a 19.9 percent stake and licenses itsalgorithm to the US entity, which will retrain and operate it on US user data. In other words, the core technology remains Chinese intellectual property, while control over the data, moderation and distribution increasingly shifts to US capital. This arrangement exposes the essential nature of the deal: a forced transaction achieved through political pressure though it is claimed to be the outcome of "market negotiations". Under the threat of a congressionally mandated ban, a prized global digital asset was compelled to open its ownership to select US tycoons. "National security" rhetoric provided the packaging; capital redistribution was the content. Ironically, the very algorithm once portrayed as a "dangerous foreign weapon" is now expected to be "retrained" to produce a more "distinctly American" feed. As analysts note, this means trends will shift, rankings will change, and what dominates users' screens may increasingly reflect domestic political and commercial priorities. Who controls TikTok in the US has a lot of sway over what US citizens see on the app. Unsurprisingly, creators are uneasy. Nadya Okamoto, a TikTok creator with more than 4 million followers, told the media that the company had failed to explain what the joint venture means for users. "That's why there is so muchparanoia," she said, adding that technical disruptions only intensified fears of censorship. Another viral comment summarized the mood with biting satire: The US didn't "save" TikTok—it redistributed its ownership to White House-aligned billionaires while leaving ByteDance's algorithm at the core. Small business owners, whose livelihoods depend on the platform, are watching closely. Although they were relieved the ban threat was lifted, they are still worried the new owners might sideline e-commerce features. These business owners hold a wait-and-see mindset, as they really doubt whether TikTok's role in empowering voices that once lacked access to mass platforms can be retained. The wave of uninstalls has not yet translated into a meaningful drop in active users, reflecting TikTok's massive user base and the reluctance of frequent users to leave. But the symbolic message is unmistakable. As one user wrote, "The new American TikTok will be like Panda Express for Chinese food: familiar on the surface, sanitized for mass appeal, owned by different interests, and stripped of the original's deeper flavor and context." In reality, the TikTok deal may already represent the maximum compromise possible under current circumstances. It satisfies US regulatory demands while preserving ByteDance's control over core intellectual property. If "privacy" and "data security" were truly the concerns, the deal should have reassured users. But it has not. Instead, it has suggested a deeper unease: In today's Washington, "national security" has become negotiable—provided the right people get a share. The users' verdict, expressed through uninstall buttons and sharp-edged comments, may be the most telling commentary of all.

When a 400% increase in human excrement events in your mall elevators becomes a regular Tuesday, you know you've hit rock bottom. San Francisco's largest mall—1.5 million square feet of former retail glory—is now officially dead. Panda Express, the last restaurant standing, has closed its doors for good. This wasn't a slow decline; this was policy-induced collapse. Remember "15 days to flatten the curve"? Try two years of lockdowns that killed foot traffic, combined with open-air drug markets and the Tenderloin's finest using elevators as bathrooms. The mall went from millions of shoppers to zero bids at foreclosure auction. Not even at $134 million—less than 20% of peak value. Westfield literally handed the keys back to lenders and said "good luck."Meanwhile, city leaders proposed solutions like... a soccer stadium? Sure, because what San Francisco needs is more places nobody will visit. Is anyone surprised this happened? What did they expect when they turned a blind eye to street chaos for years?

Update on our week:   Andy talks about the Bears winning the NFC North and having their best year in a very long time. The guys discuss the coaching changes over the years and the great run they've had this year. For Christmas/NYE, Andy brings up liking to cook and eat Prime Rib, and talks about how many of our Hispanic family would consider it raw, despite Prime Rib being a meat that needs to be eaten less thoroughly cooked than other cuts. Daniel sheds light on a new documentary/film he watched, Kevin Costner Presents: The First Christmas, and discusses the premise being the birth of Jesus and its historical interpretations and different possibilities. Daniel's recent visit to White castle alarmed him at the higher price of a White Castle slider. A typical 10 sack meal with fries now reaches the $20 price point, leading all the guys to discuss how overinflated pricing has become. The guys unanimously agree that Die hard is a Christmas movie, and Daniel brings up how he watched it recently as his yearly tradition around the Christmas season. Noel recently bought and watched 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in 4k via Arrow Video's physical release. He goes into detail on how this movie was a big part of his childhood and how much he was looking forward to seeing it restored and presented in 4k. Noel gives a gaming update and fills us in on his first playthrough of Horizon Forbidden West, the sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn. Noel gives a shoutout to Bibibop, a Korean Food Chain that really wowed Noel in terms of quality and taste for the price. Its a more nutritious option and a step up from Panda Express or other Asian spots. Think of it like the Panda Express sample strategy – give people a taste of what you can do with a smaller, low-risk engagement, and they'll naturally want the full meal. I'm joined by my co-founder and head of coaching, Stephanie Vaughan, who brings over $100 million in organizational impact through her coaching expertise. As the former president of coaching for Tony Robbins' Business Breakthroughs International and developer of 150 coaches worldwide, Stephanie knows exactly what it takes to scale high-ticket sales systems that actually work. KEY TAKEAWAYS: High-ticket sales fail because most entrepreneurs try to make the sale too fast without building sufficient trust and relationship first. The gateway strategy uses smaller, paid low-risk engagements that lead prospects naturally toward your premium offers. Gateway offers work like food court samples – they give prospects an initial win and taste of your results before asking for bigger commitments. High-ticket sales cycles require multiple calls, meetings, and touchpoints with a team of people to build confidence in the decision. Your super consumer is based on real data from your best clients, not theoretical ideal client profiles you created when starting out. Know your super consumer by identifying clients who pay the most, get the best results, send referrals, and are easiest to work with. Gateway strategies work across any industry – from custom coding to consulting to physical products. The key is creating an irresistible gateway offer that provides immediate value while demonstrating your capability to deliver on larger promises. Growing your business is hard, but it doesn't have to be. In this podcast, we will be discussing top level strategies for both growing and expanding your business beyond seven figures. The show will feature a mix of pure content and expert interviews to present key concepts and fundamental topics in a variety of different formats. We believe that this format will enable our listeners to learn the most from the show, implement more in their businesses, and get real value out of the podcast. Enjoy the show. This week, we come in hot — starting with wuxia vibes, holiday chaos, and cursed Christmas remixes of “September” — before diving into music stats, Taskmaster binges, Eden's Wuxia/Baihe adventures, and Peter's latest reading spree (including Gödel, Escher, Bach). Eventually, we embark on the Most Important Cultural Work of Our Time: a fast-food and fast-casual tier list. Along the way, we crown unexpected champions, bury some long-held myths (looking directly at you, In-N-Out), and declare Waffle House the beating heart of American civilization. As I continue to recover from a variety of appendix-related issues, I’m turning to capable and talented guest hosts to keep Car Con Carne running. This episode offers something a little bit different: It features the podcast-hosting debut of my daughter, Fiona VanOsdol. Joining her are her friends Faith Ferry and Fionn Riley, co-hosts of her college radio show called “The F Word” (their names all start with “F,” and they talk about topics that start with “F”). Their topic for this episode is “food,” which pretty much drives home the fact that Fiona’s my daughter. Among the food-related topics discussed: * Dining hall food, and its potential health risks.* Thanksgiving foods - tater tots on green bean casserole is a thing?* Fiona’s second attempt at constructing a Jell-O dessert.* Favorite restaurants - let’s have more buffets (or not)! Also, what’s the best thing to order from Panda Express? Chili’s?* Fiona shares a dark sandwich moment from our shared history (she calls it “James lore”). Thanks for supporting Car Con Carne, especially during this weird period where I’m off the grid. Thank you for listening and watching - I had an especially fun time handing the show over to Fiona. ## Car Con Carne is sponsored by Easy Automation: If you’re looking to transform your home, office, or business into a smart, seamlessly connected space, Easy Automation delivers custom automation solutions that are tailored to your lifestyle. San Francisco's infamous 'poop mall' just sold for 10% of its original value – and nobody else even bothered to bid on it. The Westfield Center, once valued at $1.2 billion, transferred to lenders for a measly $133 million after years of human waste in elevators, 95% vacancy, and complete business exodus. This isn't just a real estate story – it's a masterclass in how progressive policies can literally turn a premier shopping destination into a ghost town where Panda Express is the only tenant brave enough to stay open. When store managers are slipping on human feces in elevators and closing restrooms due to drug use and prostitution, is anyone surprised that Nordstrom packed up and left? The new mayor is trying to clean things up, but can San Francisco actually recover from this level of urban decay? Will anyone be crazy enough to buy this beautiful but cursed property, and what would it take to bring shoppers back to a mall famous for its elevator surprises? Let me know in the comments what you think this disaster will actually sell for when it hits the market again. How do you create clarity, build respect, and prepare a company for both growth and transition? Michael Richman shares how he navigated these challenges as a fifth-generation entrepreneur. By securing major accounts like Starbucks, Panda Express, and Family Dollar, Michael proved his value and helped expand his family's custom manufacturing business nationwide. Later, he turned to the EO community and the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) to implement simple tools, such as scorecards, accountability charts, and people management systems — changes that unlocked growth, revealed hidden problems, and ultimately prepared the business for a successful exit.
