What happens when you combine the brilliant mind of Ryan Coogler and a bunch of blood-thirsty vampires? You get SINNERS, one of the most original and entertaining films of the year. A theatrical feat at the box office, it's grossed over 285 million dollars since its April 16th release. It was my absolute pleasure to talk to producer Sev Ohanian about how this monster movie gem came to fruition. Sev is a homie and we go way back to our baby producer days, so it is really special for me to reconnect with him after so many years. Our meet cute story is also one for the books! Sev is Armenian-American screenwriter, producer, and founder of Proximity Media alongside Ryan and Zinzi Coogler. He co-wrote and produced (alongside his wife and producing partner Natalie Qasabian who was on the podcast back in 2019!), SEARCHING, released by Sony Screen Gems in 2018. The film grossed $75 million worldwide and sparked the sequel, MISSING. Ohanian also co-wrote and produced RUN for Lionsgate, which became Hulu's most-watched film upon its premiere. During our time together, we talked about his first foray into filmmaking - an $800 micro-budget film shot on his dad's home video camera, how his working relationship with Coogler came to be, and the trials and tribulations of shooting on location in the swamps of Louisiana. xx cg

White supremacy, the system which enabled the descendants of Europe to steal an outsized portion of this world's labor and land, has always been tied to a specious notion of beauty. What does it mean that Wakanda and Talokan give us a beauty created not to justify enslavement but to celebrate freedom? Ta-Nehisi Coates dives deep into the beautiful and complex portrayals of Shuri, Namor, Wakanda, and Talokan with actors Letitia Wright and Tenoch Huerta and cultural consultant Dr. Gerardo Aldana. The story of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever emerged out of the very real death of Chadwick Boseman, the actor who played T'Challa. But there was an earlier version of the script, a different story written when no one involved in the movie knew that Chadwick was gravely ill. Ta-Nehisi Coates is joined by director and co-writer Ryan Coogler and co-writer Joe Robert Cole to discuss the original screenplay, the changes they needed to make, what makes a Black Panther film, and their special collaboration on both movies. Ta-Nehisi also talks to producers Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, and Nate Moore, Executive of Production and Development, to learn about the 22-year journey to bring Black Panther to the screen and what excites them about Namor, comic book storytelling, and making movies. Yogi Bear, Cindy Bear, Huckleberry Hound and a Universe of Hanna-Barbara Characters Welcome You to Jellystone! Yogi, Boo Boo and Cindy, alongside an epic ensemble cast of Hanna-Barbera characters, are returning to television screens in the all-new animated comedy, Jellystone! The Max Original series helmed by acclaimed showrunner and executive producer C.H. Greenblatt and produced by Warner Bros. Animation, presents a reimagined take on these beloved characters, modernizing them for today's family audience and introducing them to a new generation of fans. Season one premieres Thursday, July 29 on HBO Max.Set in the charming town of the same name, Jellystone! follows an ensemble of Hanna-Barbera characters as they live, work, play, and (as is often the case), destroy the town in some silly way together. Huckleberry Hound proudly serves as the town's mayor; Cindy, Boo Boo and Yogi are the town's medical staff; Jabberjaw works at Magilla's clothing store where they supply all the bow ties and hats to the town's citizens; and every character has a specific role in the community. Their paths cross in fun and ridiculous ways, turning everyday activities into hilarious pandemonium."I grew up watching tons of Hanna-Barbera cartoons and have a deep love for these characters," said Greenblatt. "The massive amount of both classic and not-so-classic characters we were able to use from the Hanna-Barbera library is what really makes the Jellystone! universe special. Rather than recreate the feeling of cartoons of the past, we wanted to have silly, weird fun with these characters and expand their personalities to give them more depth. Chances are if there's a character you love, you'll see them somewhere in this world eventually. We hope longtime fans appreciate our take on this world, and we're excited that parents get to introduce and enjoy their favorite Hanna-Barbera characters with their kids."Greenblatt serves as showrunner and executive producer, and voices several characters including Doggie Daddy, Boo Boo, Peter Potamus, and Benny. We've caught a mean case of RUN-fever
They say you can never escape a mother’s love... but for Chloe, that’s not a comfort — it’s a threat. Hulu’s latest high profile film project RUN opens the door on something unnatural, even sinister about the relationship between Chloe (newcomer Kiera Allen) and her mom, Diane (Sarah Paulson). Diane has raised her daughter in total isolation, controlling every move she’s made since birth, and there are secrets that Chloe's only beginning to grasp. From the visionary writers, producers and director of the breakout film Searching, comes a suspense thriller that shows that when mom gets a little too close, you need to RUN. Director Aneesh Chaganty and Producer Sev Ohanian join us for a conversation on the challenges of pulling together a high wire psychological thriller and working with a promising young actor, Kiera Allen on a brilliant film anchored by one of the finest actors working today, Sarah Paulson. Premiering on HULU November 20
Directed by Aneesh Chaganty and written by Aneesh Chaganty and Sev Ohanian. Run is the next movie from the team behind Searching, one of the best movies of 2018. Searching is known for its unique directing style (utilizing various POVs of screens) and shocking twists/turns. This film has a more traditional visual style but the suspense and mystery seem to still be there in full force. Natalie Qasabian is an impressive person. She is the producer of SEARCHING, starring John Cho, a movie she made for $1m that made $75m worldwide in the box office. A very hard thing to do these days given how people don't watch movies in theaters anymore. She is an Armenian-American hustler. She is a go getter. She is the only producer I know who was also getting her MBA from Pepperdine University while also in production. So, yes, she’s a badass in it’s truest form. Currently she's producing "RUN starring Sarah Paulson for Lionsgate alongside her SEARCHING producer Sev Ohanian and director Aneesh Chaganty. In this week’s chat, we dive deep into getting her start with the Duplass Brothers, chasing the high of making your own projects, and the wrap blues every producer feels when a project ends.

“The only person that you need to give you a chance is yourself” – Sev Ohanian Sev Ohanian’s latest film is Searching, a modern thriller about a father searching for his missing daughter. The entire movie takes place on technology devices. It was an official selection at the Sundance Film Festival and started playing in theater’s everywhere August 31, 2018. Thirteen years ago, his first film had one screening location: the TV in his teacher’s AP Environmental Science class at Glendale’s Hoover High School. His reward was an ‘A’ in the class, and the start of a lifelong passion for filmmaking. Since then, Ohanian has gone on to write, direct, and produce several films. During the episode, he discusses the diversity on display on both sides of the camera, the basics of good storytelling, the shifting entertainment industry, and the thrilling story of how his team made Searching. Oh, and he really loves Glendale. “This City has always held a really special place in my heart,” Ohanian told the Glendale Tech on Tap podcast. Ohanian is on Twitter @SevOhanian. Searching is on Twitter @SearchingMovie. Editor’s note: This host saw the film in Glendale a few short days after this interview.

A film that got LOTS of buzz at Sundance and won three awards was Search. Directed by newcomer, Aneesh Changaty (won the Audience Award: NEXT and the Albert P. Sloane Award) and produced by award-winner Sev Ohanian, stars Debra Messing and John Cho have lots to say about this new film. In addition, I also dish with Debra on Will and Grace and the women's movement. Praised for its technologically new approach to filmmaking, I highly recommend Search, a film about a father who takes the law into his own hands and conducts a search for his missing daughter on-line.
