Directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, Lilo & Stitch tells the story of Lilo (Maia Kealoha), a 6-year-old Hawaiian girl who lives with her older sister, Nani (Sydney Elizebeth Agudong). After Lilo wishes for a friend, their home (and their lives) is upended with the arrival of Stitch (Chris Sanders), a dog-like alien with a penchant for destruction. However, while Nani attempts to keep her social workers at bay, Stitch also tries to avoid two alien hunters (Zach Galifianakis and Billy Magnussen) who are determined to bring him home. Our review.
Marcel's journey is a metaphor for the search for identity and the meaning of home. The film beautifully captures how small experiences can have a significant impact on our understanding of the world and ourselves.A Dad's Take This film is perfect for a family movie night, especially for those with young children. It offers a blend of humor, adventure, and life lessons that can spark meaningful family discussions about resilience, creativity, and the importance of community. For anyone who loves innovative storytelling and animation, Marcel the Shell With Shoes On is a must-watch. Whether you're young or just young at heart, Marcel's journey is sure to inspire and captivate.
Marcel the Shell with Shoes On burst onto the internet stage in 2010 with a three minute YouTube video. In three short videos, the world fell in love with the tiny, soft-spoken, introspective mollusc as he showed us his everyday life in a human-sized home. Directed by Dean Fleischer Camp and voiced by actress Jenny Slate, Marcel's adventures jumped to the big screen in 2021 with a feature length film. While audiences didn't exactly “shell”out the big bucks to see it, the movie was critically adored, earning a near-perfect 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. CatBusRuss finally got to celebrate his 40th birthday with the London trip his dad wanted to go on three years ago. It was centered around Cubs baseball, but that victory over the Cardinals (Series split, but it is England, so let us considerate an aggregate win of 14-8.) only took up so much time. He had to amuse himself on the flight and the one day with no American pastime. Thanks to United Airlines entertainment system, a movie marathon was formed. Russ finally caught up on “The Banshees of Inisherin” on the way to England. The flick is 1:53, but the other feature was “Marc Maron: From Bleak to Dark” at 1:05, so it balances out to 90 minutes per show. When there was no baseball, the Stevenses went and saw “The Book of Mormon” on the West End. And the flight home was an Isabella Rossellini double feature of “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On” and Robert Zemeckis's “Death Becomes Her”. Another interesting line up the CatBus would love to have a theater to moderate for. This episode was recorded using the "Spotify for Podcasters" app with no computers to reference information from. Let me apologize for butchering any movie titles and failing to pay proper respect to "Marcel" director Dean Fleischer Camp's.

When we looked back on the movies we loved in 2022, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On was one of our favorites. The film stars Marcel (voiced by actress and comedian Jenny Slate), a small, animated shell who is the subject of a documentary by a newly divorced man named Dean (played by director Dean Fleischer-Camp). Jenny and Dean first came up with Marcel over a decade ago, back when they were a couple living together in Brooklyn. In the years since, Jenny's career took off, with roles on shows like Parks and Recreation, Big Mouth, Saturday Night Live, and Bob's Burgers. They also moved across the country, got married and then divorced, and still made a feature-length film together over the course of seven years. “Being Marcel, I don't have to think about it,” Jenny said. “And you can't be Marcel unless you're with Dean.” They talk about negotiating their creative partnership while ending their marriage, anxiety, and holding space for grief and joy at the same time.

There's the electrifying rundown of the big Physical Media Releases, featuring the Straight to DVD and Streaming Picks of the Week. Then the guys wrap up the show by slowing it down for another hip and happening entry of ‘The Lounge' featuring a breakdown of all the MCU announcements at the San Diego ComicCon. This week on End Credits, we're searching for meaning. It's a big, complicated world out there, and it's sometimes hard to make sense the craziest in it, so why not let a little shell show us the way? Marcel the Shell With Shoes On will try and fill us with hope and charm this week, and along the way, we will also talk about some of our favourite flicks from the year so far. This Wednesday, August 3, at 3 pm, Adam A. Donaldson and Tim Phillips will discuss: So Far So Good. The year 2022 is now more than half over, so we've got to ask the question: Have we seen anything good? When September arrives, so does the busy festival and awards season, so in the interest of not missing anything good in the first part of the year, we will open the show by looking back at some of our '22 favourites; from an anthology by the maker of Drive My Car to another trip to Gotham City with a new caped crusader! REVIEW: Marcel the Shell With Shoes On (2022). About 10 years ago, Dean Fleischer Camp made a viral video about a one-inch shell named Marcel just going about his life. Camp and his collaborator, then-wife Jenny Slate, decided to give Marcel the feature-length treatment, and seven years later we get Marcel the Shell With Shoes On. This charming and hilarious mockumentary about a shell's search for his lost shell family has been getting positive reviews for its voice work, humour, and warm outlook on life, but how do we feel about it? End Credits is on CFRU 93.3 fm and cfru.ca Wednesday at 3 pm.

What if A24 made a Toy Story movie? It probably wouldn't be too different from their latest indie darling, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, directed and co-written by Dean Fleischer Camp. Based on Camp's viral YouTube videos from over a decade ago — with Jenny Slate returning to voice Marcel and co-write the screenplay — Marcel the Shell is probably the most millennial movie we've seen lately, but apparently no one else caught it on the big screen this summer based on the box office tally. But before we close out the season, let's discuss your divorced uncle's favorite kids' film. On this episode, I spoke to production designer Liz Toonkel about her work on Marcel the Shell with Shoes On. The film was directed by by Dean Fleischer Camp and stars Jenny Slate.
Marcel The Shell With Shoes On began in 2010 as a series of stop-motion shorts written and directed by Dean Fleischer-Camp and actor Jenny Slate, who also does the voice of Marcel. It's a “documentary” about Marcel, who's a hermit crab shell with one googly eye and doll shoes. What makes both the shorts and the film so charming is hearing Marcel's funny, optimistic witticisms and seeing how he uses real full-sized human objects in his miniature life, such as a piece of lint on a thread as a pet, using a spoon to catapult onto shelves, and putting honey on his shoes to walk up a wall. For the full length film, Fleischer-Camp, Slate and screenwriter Nick Paley expanded the story to include Marcel's grandmother Connie. The two live in the house alone, but they used to be part of a whole shell community. With the help of Dean, Marcel's documentarian, Marcel goes on a quest to find the rest of his family and friends. As a live-action and stop-motion movie, Marcel The Shell was extremely complicated to shoot. DP Bianca Cline, who has a documentary background, shot the principal photography on location so that cinematographer Eric Adkins, an experienced stop-motion DP, could use her footage as background plates for the stop-motion. Then, all of the stop-motion portions and live action portions were composited together into a seamless film. Eric was on set and took extensive notes, photos and measurements during the live action portion, since creating realistic, fool-the-eye stop-motion is extremely technical. All of Bianca's documentary footage was edited and animatics created before Eric's job as the stop-motion DP began, with puppeteers using interchangeable shell models of Marcel and Connie. Bianca tried to approach the film as if Marcel was a real living character. Once she began shooting, the voices and music were already fully recorded and finished along with extensive storyboards, so it helped to have a clear blueprint. She could find the best locations within the house and use naturalistic lighting for each scene. An important part of the story is to emphasize that Marcel is very small in a big world. Bianca wanted him to always be placed next to things that made him look small, and she often used one of the Marcel models as a reference. The team took care to make everything look effortless, as if they just showed up with a camera. As with a real documentary, Bianca wanted it to seem slightly imperfect with handheld movement and a little bit of jolting motion once in awhile. They were constantly brainstorming and problem solving together with the production designer, VFX supervisor and animation director on set. For Eric, the most complex scenes to replicate in stop-motion were the driving portions, shot with GoPros mounted inside the car, as Marcel gets driven around looking for his family. All the lighting in stop motion is strictly controlled on a set, so using flickering and moving light in scenes is rare. But complex problems just inspire Eric to find more creative solutions, and he enjoyed the challenge of making sure that the stop-motion shadows matched the movements of the real car. In this weeks episode of the world's-fastest-movie-review podcast Jackson and Mike review two new films! First 'MARCEL THE SHELL WITH SHOES ON' A mockumentary film about Marcel is an adorable one-inch-tall shell who ekes out a colorful existence. Starring Jenny Slate, Rosa Salazar, Thomas Mann, Isabella Rossellini, and Dean Fleischer Camp. Then a quick review of 'DON'T MAKE ME GO' A terminally ill man and his teenage daughter embark on a road trip from California to New Orleans for his 20th college reunion. Starring John Cho, Mia Isaac and Jermaine Clement.
We review the new A24 film based on the shorts starring Jenny Slate, Dean Fleischer-Camp, and Isabella Rossellini
After almost an eight-year hiatus, actor Jenny Slate and director Dean Fleischer-Camp are bringing their lovable Marcel the Shell back to life. This time audiences will see the hermit crab with two pink shoes and one plastic eye, who bables insightful and funny life-observations, in the stop-motion, feature-length mockumentary, “Marcel the Shell With Shoes On.” The online shorts were a smash-hit at the time, so for Fleischer-Camp it was important for the film to maintain Marcel's original online integrity. That is why, he explains, “it took a while for us to find the right partners to do that, in a way that was really holistic to what we had made and what and how we like to work.” And because Fleischer-Camp invented much of the filmmaking process, Slate remarks that they wanted to take that to the film production, “so we took the risk to try to create that [environment] for ourselves.” The duo now share the story behind how “Marcel the Shell” was created, and their trajectory of taking this tiny character from being a YouTube sensation to the big screen. But first, Kim Masters and Matt Belloni banter about the Emmys group-like nominations this year. And while Hulu got 58 nods, its future as a streaming platform remains uncertain.
Dean Fleischer Camp is the award-winning filmmaker and New York Times-bestselling author who created viral sensation MARCEL THE SHELL WITH SHOES ON. Since appearing on Filmmaker Magazine's 25 New Faces of Independent Film in 2011, Camp's work has been profiled in virtually every major American media outlet. In 2018, his first feature FRAUD was released to widespread controversy and acclaim, described as a "brilliantly provocative”(Filmmaker) and “exhilarating”(Sight+Sound) “masterwork”(Documentary Magazine) that “pushes the boundaries of documentary”(Variety). His first scripted feature, an adaptation of MARCEL THE SHELL WITH SHOES ON starring Jenny Slate, Isabella Rossellini and Rosa Salazar, is slated for a 2022 theatrical release via A24. He has directed for Comedy Central, HBO, TBS, Adult Swim and Disney Interactive. Commercial clients include Atlassian, Pop-Tarts, Clearasil, Maltesers, and many others.
Written and directed by Dean Fleischer-Camp, MARCEL THE SHELL WITH SHOES ON tells the story of an adorable knick-knack and his search for family. Marcel (voiced by Jenny Slate), a one-inch-tall shell with a single googly-eye, lives with his Grandmother as the sole survivors of a tragedy that saw his family disappear into the night. When a documentary director rents their home as an AirBnB, he cannot help but make Marcel his next subject. As the videos launch, Marcel begins to hope that these simple videos might lead to him finding the family that he lost and loves so dearly. In this 1on1, we speak to Fleischer-Camp about using documentary style, the balance between seriousness and sweetness and what comes next for Marcel.

Jenny Slate, Dean Fleischer Camp, and Nick Paley did it. They took the 2010 internet sensation, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On the short film, and expanded the concept into a full feature. And they didn't just figure out a way to make it work. They crafted a deeply moving exploration of connection and community, far exceeding expectations and delivering a film that's currently a favorite of 2022.In the new movie, Marcel, a talking shell with shoes on voiced by Slate, is living with his Nana Connie (voiced by Isabella Rossellini) in a home being used as an Airbnb. They used to be part of a thriving community there, but their loved ones vanished, challenging Marcel and Connie to figure out how to survive on their own as tiny shells in a big house while also coping with their loss. However, when a documentary filmmaker (Camp) moves in, Marcel winds up with an unexpected opportunity to try to track down their loved ones. With Marcel the Shell with Shoes On getting an expanded theatrical release on July 15th, I got the chance to chat with Slate about the movie and so much more during an episode of Collider Ladies Night. “Marcel the Shell With Shoes On” is a quirky, charming new film based on a series of YouTube shorts about a talking shell in search of his long-lost family. We speak to its director, Dean Fleischer Camp, and Jenny Slate, who is the voice of Marcel.
Five years ago, Jenny and Sam sat for a special conversation. They promised to reconvene in 2020 (which they did). To celebrate the release of Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, Jenny returns for round three! We unpack the decade-long journey to making Marcel (8:00), what the character embodied for her (11:19), creating with director Dean Fleischer-Camp (13:39), combating misogyny in Hollywood (15:16), and the painful timeliness of her 2014 film, Obvious Child (17:54). On the back-half, we return to passages from our 2017 (29:30) and 2020 conversations (34:40), what Jenny has learned since becoming a mother (36:55), and the regenerative power of making I Want You Back (38:52). To close, Jenny shares a special poem at the heart of Marcel the Shell, written by Philip Larkin (42:27). See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In this smart, funny and beguiling film, MARCEL THE SHELL WITH SHOES, Jenny Slate (Obvious Child) gives voice and life to an adorable one-inch-tall shell who ekes out a colorful existence with his grandmother Connie and their pet lint, Alan. Once part of a sprawling community of shells, they now live alone as the sole survivors of a mysterious tragedy. But when a documentary filmmaker discovers them amongst the clutter of his Airbnb, the short film he posts online brings Marcel millions of passionate fans, as well as unprecedented dangers and a new hope at finding his long-lost family. Marcel gets his big-screen debut in this hilarious and heartwarming story about finding connection in the smallest corners. Director / co-screenwriter Dean Fleischer Camp joins us for a conversation on backstory behind Marcel, working with Isabella Rossellini, the viral explosion of Marcel more than 10 years ago and his determination to tell Marcel's story the way he and Marcel's extended family wanted it told. Based on the viral YouTube short from 2010, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On follows Marcel (Jenny Slate), a 1-inch tall shell who lives a colorful existence with his grandmother Connie (Isabella Rossellini) and their pet lint, Alan. When asked about creating and writing for such a unique protagonist, the original video's creator Dean Fleischer Camp says, "I think the thing that's always appealed to me about Marcel is he doesn't think of himself as small or weird or a talking shell or anything, and the film itself does not treat him with anything less than 100% dignity as a documentary subject and doesn't freak out over the fact that he's a talking shell." Camp's co-writer Nick Paley goes on to share his own take on writing "weird" subject matter: "Do everything you can to cultivate high-sensitivity-listening to your own tastes. I think that is a skill that no one really taught us in film school: to self-authorize around the things that you love, even if you think they're dumb and kind of beside the point or not relevant to what's happening. I think the only type of work that is really special is the stuff that someone is really not sure is going to work for other people, and this film is a wonderful proof of that." Leonard and Jessie are unapologetic proselytizers for the new theatrical feature Marcel the Shell With Shoes On. This disarming feature is an outgrowth of a short Fleischer-Camp created with his partner, actor/comedian/filmmaker Jenny Slate that went viral back in 2010 when that was uncommon. Dean explains how he and Jenny dealt with that phenomenon and tried to protect their precious character, who emerges triumphant in this charming and surprisingly emotional film.
