Episode 106: Understanding the Record Number of Migrants at our Southern Border

All Things

You've undoubtedly seen the photos and videos streaming out of El Paso, Texas. Migrants running across highways, crowds camping out on the streets, and of course the stories of mayors and governors putting immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers on buses and sending them to other places in the United States. The images and headlines are hard to process. I invited Jenny Yang, the Senior Vice President of Advocacy and Policy at World Relief, onto the episode of All Things to help us sift through what's going on. Jenny and I discuss what's currently taking place at the border, how the situation got to be like it is, what Biden's visit to El Paso and his newly proposed legislation means, as well as what Christians ought to think about and do about immigration in our country. Jenny's expert and seasoned perspective is really helpful. It's true that monthly encounters between migrants—attempting to cross north into the United States from Mexico—and agents with the US border Patrol are at levels we have not seen for over two decades. In November 2022, for example, 206,239 encounters were reported, with most migrants coming from Colombia, Cuba, Nicaragua, Peru and Venezuela (https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2023/01/13/monthly-encounters-with-migrants-at-u-s-mexico-border-remain-near-record-highs/). World Relief says, “Today, over 100 million people around the world have been forced to leave their home. Each day, that number grows by over 37,000. These families are fleeing for their lives, praying for their safety and desperately seeking refuge. If you're like us, you believe that everyone deserves a place to call ‘home'. You believe that families and young children deserve safety and security.”Jenny says, “Advocacy is speaking up with those who are vulnerable to address the underlying causes of injustice and oppression by influencing the policies and practices of people in power. We should love our neighbors on an interpersonal level. But when systemic injustice is at the root of a problem, loving our neighbor means advocacy as well. Advocacy consists of organized efforts and actions seeking to highlight critical issues, influence public attitudes and enact or implement laws and policies. It starts with the reality of “what is” so that a vision of “what should be” can be realized. The ultimate aim of advocacy is to demonstrate the good news of the coming of the Kingdom of God.” (https://worldrelief.org/blog-imagine-what-it-should-be/)Resources mentioned in this episode: World Relief - https://worldrelief.org/Women of Welcome - https://womenofwelcome.com/Welcoming the Stranger by Matthew Soerens and Jenny Yang - https://amzn.to/3wCa2Nn

On today's episode I talk about my new project and the road that led me there (in lots of detail!) In Fall of 2022 I decided to start my own production company (a long time coming) and create a recurring standup comedy show/energy circle event (also a long time coming) that combines self-care with laughter as a form of healing. Join me as I talk to the 3 comedians who will perform at our first show on January 7, 2023! We talk about how comedy heals, why they do what they do, and how it feels to kill! Madelein Smith (@madeleinsmith) is a touring comedian based in NYC. She has traveled internationally performing at colleges, clubs, and cruise ships. She is also a regular at many NYC clubs. Her debut album, Belle of the Ball, rose to #1 on the ITunes Comedy Charts. She has been featured on Amazon Prime and Comedy Central, and currently has a network pilot in development. She co-hosts the podcast Cheers for Queers with Sarah Garner, where they interview amazing queer performers and talk about being little weirdos. Kate Nichols (@HeyKateNichols) is a stand up comedian, improviser, writer and storyteller who's bounced around New York City, Long Island, and New Jersey all her life. She performs at venues all over the tri-state and the US and has performed internationally at clubs in Canada, Switzerland, and the Edinburgh International Fringe Festival 3 years in a row. Kate also appeared on A&E's series “Bae or Bail”. She's half of comedy duo “Belleville Broads” with improv partner Angelique Londino. The pair perform as animal-print loving, exaggerated versions of everyone's favorite over-the-top Aunts from New Jersey and Long Island and they've hosted shows for notable comics such as America's Got Talent finalist Gina Brillon. Kate has also appeared on numerous podcasts including Period Piece, Nice Guys and Hello Thoughts. You can also find her @cyclebreakerstherapy Kendra Dawsey (@bossy_dawsey) is a stand-up comedian and writer based in NYC. Their razor-sharp wit and engaging delivery has earned spots opening for Eddie Pepitone, Jenny Yang and Michelle Buteau, and they've featured as the Comic-in-Residence at the renowned Comedy Studio. They've been on Kevin Hart's “Lyft Comics” on the LOL Network and had their work featured in Revolutionary Spaces' online talk show, “Tea Party Tonight!” They've also got a weekly Twitch show, “Left Night with Kendra Dawsey.” Dawsey's comedy combines abrasive criticism, raunchy set-ups and whimsical punchlines – something for everybody in the audience. Before Jenny Yang became a big-time comedian and Buzzfeed sensation, before she became a writer for television, and before she was cast as one of the stars of The Brothers Sun, a Netflix dramedy starring Michelle Yeoh, Jenny was a brand new comic, looking for stage time. I had her perform at APU for the Asian club, APASO, and the head of Student Life liked her so much, he booked her for the big APU comedy night, giving Jenny her first full-length set of 45 minutes. Sure, APU was kinda pissed to later find out that Jenny was not, in fact, christian, but Jenny absolutely destroyed the audience. So much so, that I had an extra 5 or 6 students trying to crash my classes for the next few semester simply because of my association with her. Jenny was always so supportive of my work at APU, giving her time and talents to the APASO group, singing with my band, and doing standup. So I brought her onto Chapel Probation After Hours to reminisce our days of slogging through evening 210 freeway traffic to help out the Asian kids at APU. Description: This episode brings together faith leaders Kathryn Freeman, Jenny Yang, and Michael Wear to discuss a hot button issue-civic engagement for American Christians. We'll hear from each of them about what it means for followers of Christ to love their neighbors through politics, voting, and the "third space." How do we move from awareness to action, and action to advocacy? Our amazing guests help us understand the challenges and rewards of participation in the political sphere as people of faith. Host & Executive Producer - Latasha Morrison Senior Producer - Lauren C. Brown Producer, Editor & Music By - Travon Potts Transcriber - Sarah Connatser Quotes: "There's nothing wrong with being political. All of us are political beings, all of us live in structures and governments, and communities in which all of us need to come together to make important decisions that impact the common good." - Jenny Yang “The fine line is between being political and being partisan because oftentimes, partisanship can mean blind allegiance to a specific political party or candidate without realizing that there are faults with specific candidates and parties. And not a single political party or person will ever encompass the fully, perfectly balanced agenda that I believe we're supposed to pursue in our society.” - Jenny Yang “Faithful political engagement means that you're willing to put faithfulness over short term political gain. It also means that you're not just in politics for your own self-interest, that you're not just going to politics to get your own needs met.” - Michael Wear “I'm convinced people are going to politics a lot these days for spiritual and emotional needs. We find those needs met in Christ, and so we're freed up to go into politics to affirm human dignity and advance justice.” - Michael Wear “There has to be a separation of who I am as an American and a citizen of this democracy, and who I am as a citizen of the kingdom of heaven. And I think oftentimes we blend those two things together as if America is a Christian nation, and it doesn't matter that we've made an idol or that we live in a way where those identities are blended.” - Kathryn Freeman “The reality is, whether you're liberal or conservative, you should feel like, ‘I can't go with that, because my first identity is a citizen of the kingdom of heaven.' And if you never feel that tension, if the country is always doing what you feel like aligns with God, then I would say that the God that you're worshipping is not the God of the Bible. It's not the Jesus of the red letters.” - Kathryn Freeman LISTEN & SUBSCRIBE Podcast link: https://podlink.to/BeTheBridgeSocial handles/links: Instagram: @LatashaMorrisonTwitter: @LatashaMorrisonFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/LatashaMMorrison/Official Hashtag: #bethebridge --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

The last couple of weeks has felt heavy and difficult to know how to engage, how to demonstrate I care, and what to pray. World Relief is an incredible organization that works through the church to serve the vulnerable. Jenny states that what's happening in Ukraine is the worst humanitarian crisis since World War II and as believers, we've been called to come near to those in need. She talks with us about how and what to pray for people in both Ukraine and Russia - she even challenges us to pray for Putin to have a change of heart because God commands us to love and pray for our enemies. This is a crisis that can potentially go on for a very long time so she talks us through how to fight compassion fatigue.
