Tri-state area or New England? Nutmeg or Constitution State? "Stuffy, preppy, sleepy"? What really makes Connecticut Connecticut, and what stereotypes can we stand to shake off? This hour, Catherine Shen is joined by a roundtable of Connecticut Public hosts, as we debate what defines Connecticut. And we want to hear from you. What characterizes or typifies where you live? Casting Director Karlee Fomalont (CSA) was born and raised in Los Angeles and currently resides in New York City. She is a 2-time Artios Award Nominee and graduate of NYU Tisch School of the Arts, where her acting training made for a seamless transition into casting. She began her career at CBS Primetime NY and ABC Primetime NY, then transitioning into independent, working on projects such as Baz Luhrmann's Netflix series "The Get Down," Steven Spielberg's "The Post" and Tamara Jenkins' "Private Life" (both for which the casting team was nominated for an Artios Award for Outstanding Achievement in Casting). Karlee has worked with Rori Bergman for over 7 years, with credits including "Yearly Departed" (Amazon), "Power Book III: Raising Kanan" (Starz), "Run the World" (Starz), "Living With Yourself" (Netflix), "Love Life" (Netflix), "The Good Cop" (Netflix). In this episode Steve joins a fellow cooner who has forsaken the great hunting opportunities of his home state of Indiana for the challenges of hunting coons in one of the nation's smallest-in-land-mass states and also one of the most-heavily populated, the State of Connecticut.David Schmidt is known by coon hunters nationally as the producer of the popular Tailgate Adventures tv show of a few years back and is also the founder of a national tree dog association. In the conversation, Steve draws comparisons to Mark Twain's 1889 novel, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court.  The tale's protagonist, Hank Morgan, was an engineer as is Schmidt.  Each was transported to a foreign land to face untold adventures.  The conversation between Fielder and Schmidt veers off the literary path to explore Schmidt's affinity for Clover-bred Walkers, the comparisons of hunting in Connecticut to the Midwest, his son Alex' achievements in UKC's youth program, and finishes with a discussion between friends about things that didn't work out as they hoped.   The determination Schmidt shows to pursue his sport despite the odds, is inspiring and worth the price of the ticket.  Pop the corn and let's take a trip to the Nutmeg State, or if you will, the Land of Steady Habits.

The Connecticut legislative session has concluded, and it seems that in some ways, this "Land of Steady Habits" has emerged as a changed place. Yesterday, Gov. Ned Lamont signed a bill legalizing marijuana, a deal that took many years, and almost fell apart at the end.  Lawmakers and the Governor also agreed on a budget deal that didn't raise taxes, but certainly put the issue of tax fairness front and center - shining a light on divides within the Democratic party. And, the biggest piece of environmental legislation in years, the Transportation and Climate Initiative, failed, but the state did tackle climate and waste issues in a substantial way. Last night, I talked about these issues and more with CT Mirror reporters Mark Pazniokas, Keith Phaneuf and Jan Ellen Spiegel in our 2021 legislative wrap-up event on Zoom. Masks and MAGA hats are in. Candidate buttons and “poll watching” are out. You’ll see more, and younger, poll workers, and have more ways to vote. The results? Who knows when you’ll see them.  These are just a few of the realities of voting in Connecticut during the pandemic year of 2020. Secretary of the State Denise Merrill says she thinks that half of the votes cast this election could be by absentee ballot, a first for a state that’s traditionally made it hard to vote any other way than showing up on the first Tuesday in November. On this episode of Steady Habits she explains to host John Dankosky that safety will be a priority (masks at the polls are a must), and that you can track your registration and the status of your absentee ballot online. And, she tells me, it will be a long day for election officials dealing with both big turnouts and lots of mailed-in ballots to count. We also hear from writer Colleen Shaddox, who is joining a vigil to make sure that every vote is counted.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

CT’s economic recovery is going to be slow, but the question looms: How slow? According to the Connecticut Center for Economic Analysis at UConn, it could take a decade or more to undo the pandemic's economic damage. Every sector of the economy is hurting, but damage to the restaurant industry might be the longest-lasting. The leisure and hospitality industry account for the largest number of those laid off this year, and thousands remain unemployed or underemployed as restaurants struggle to figure out how to serve a skittish customer base. A recent move by the state to open up to 75% indoor capacity doesn’t mean much to small restaurants that don’t have enough room to socially distance, and the outdoor dining boom that we saw this summer is facing the reality that winter is coming. On this episode of "Steady Habits," John is joined by Leeanne Griffin of the Hartford Courant, and chef Tyler Anderson, to explore how state restaurants have stayed alive - and how they are planning for an uncertain future. COVID-19 has sent a shock wave through multiple industries over the past seven months, but of all of industries barely hanging on through the pandemic - the performing arts might be taking the biggest blow.  Many theaters, playhouses, music clubs and art museums already existed on thin margins, but what happens when you take away the crowds for a year, maybe more? There are still many lingering questions about when these theaters can reopen, and when they do, will people want to come back? Broadway theaters in New York are shut down through May of next year. Meanwhile, Connecticut has its own performing arts crisis to contend with: six prestigious regional theaters, known as The Connecticut Flagship Producing Theaters, that have no clear pathway to reopening their doors. The six theaters banded together to ask the state for $12 million in CARES act funding, but this week, they learned that state grants would only total $9 million for the whole sector. Today on "Steady Habits," John is joined by his podcast producer Jessica Freedman, whose article, "COVID leaves Connecticut's theater scene seeking a way forward," is up on the CT Mirror now. On this episode, they dive into the collapse of one theater in particular: Goodspeed Musicals of East Haddam.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This is a big week for the US Supreme Court. A very long term comes to an end. It was conducted under unusual circumstances because of coronavirus, it tackled some of the most important cultural and workplace issues of our times, and it featured a court that has President Donald Trump’s imprint all over it. Now, depending on when you’re listening to this podcast, it may have already wrapped up, with the final decisions coming down on Thursday morning. Earlier this week, we talked with one of the most knowledgeable court watchers around — Linda Greenhouse, the long-time NY Times reporter, and current Supreme Court columnist. She joined us for a “Steady Habits” special event on Tuesday night with a few hundred Mirror readers listening in on Zoom, and asking their own questions. Our conversation came one day before a pair of 7-2 decisions, expanding the rights of religious organizations to limit contraception coverage and other workplace protections to workers. Both of these cases — and others we talk about are part of what she calls the “project” of the John Roberts-led court. An opening up of both the public square and public dollars to religion. But despite those victories for conservatives, Linda Greenhouse has been watching closely how The Chief Justice sided with liberals on the court in three major decisions about LGBT rights, immigration and abortion. State Treasurer Shawn Wooden was born and raised in Hartford. He's seen firsthand how systemic racism limits access to housing, education and opportunity in Connecticut's cities. Police shootings of unarmed men and high rates of police stops of people of color in the suburbs aren't just news reports or statistics for him. "This is the America I know," he tells John Dankosky on "Steady Habits" this week. "And this America continues to scare me." He's advocating for corporate America to take on racism, and he's using his position as an investor of state money to do so. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

If Disney remakes don't scare you, no evil thing will. Years before Disney went bananas with live-action remakes of their animated classics, the Mouse House recruited Glenn Close and a bunch of dogs to update the 1961 classic about a nice old lady who just wants to own a nice coat. Okay, so she wants the coat made out of dalmatian puppy fur, so doggy parents Pongo and Perdita must recruit a small army of farm animals to stop that crazy Cruella de Vil from making what will obviously be a very ugly coat. Building up its pedigree, "101 Dalmatians" adds John Hughes-penned pratfalls in the style of "Home Alone," Jeff Daniels as an "independent video game developer" and two bumbling henchman played by Dr. House and Ron Weasley's Dad. Old Millennials Remember '101 Dalmatians' podcast A holiday hit back in 1996, the live-action "101 Dalmatians" isn't quite as infuriating as the Disney remakes that would come later. For the most part, real animals are used (minus a few awful shots of 90s-era CGI), and they don't speak, which immediately elevates the viewing above your standard "Air Buddies" adventure. Tyler and Angela discuss Glenn Close's go-for-broke performance and whether the film's rescue mission in the second half works without the animals talking to each other as the do in the original. We also try to figure out the character of Nanny, played by "Dennis the Menace" superstar Joan Plowright. She's a nanny? For a family with no kids? A live-in housekeeper? A dogsitter? A weird old lady with the power to identify pregnant dogs just by looking into their eyes? What are you doing here, Nanny?! You're making us nervous. At least Cruela de Vil makes her intentions clear. Also discussed in this episode: Strangers on a Train (1951) Laura (1944) The Clapper (2017) Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019) The Land of Steady Habits (2018)

The celebrity profile is dead. Or dying, at least, according to The New York Times. Case in point: the Times's own terrible profile of the great Maya Rudolph. Counterpoint: The Washington Post's fascinating, and self-eviscerating, profile of the formerly great Chevy Chase. And: Nicole Holofcener's new movie is a Netflix adaptation of Ted Thompson's novel of the same name, The Land of Steady Habits. You'll never guess where it's set. (Actually, you might not. I'm pretty sure it's never said in the movie, and they shot it in Tarrytown, New York. But it's meant to be Westport, Conn., which is why The Nose is covering it.)Support the show: http://www.wnpr.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week, we're thrilled to welcome Nicole Holofcener back on the show - probably one of the most underrated filmmakers around. Her movies are quiet, sort of understated. The protagonists are complex, flawed people, usually women. She's worked with some great actors, too. Julia Louis-Dreyfus and James Gandolfini in "Enough Said." Frances McDormand in "Friends with Money." Catherine Keener in just about everything she's made. Her latest film was just released on Netflix. It's called "The Land of Steady Habits." And for the first time, her movie centers on a man. We'll talk about that, plus her childhood growing up among Hollywood filmmaking royalty. Then, have you heard of this show, Lodge 49? It's kind of a comedy / drama set in Long Beach, California. It's kind of hard to say what it's about, but some of the themes include: secret orders (like the Masons), quarter life crises and the stagnating aerospace economy in Long Beach, California. It's funny, weird and disarmingly honest, which is why it's been a hit here at MaxFun HQ. Jesse talks with Jim Gavin, the creator, and Peter Ocko, the showrunner.
