"There's a big difference between mostly dead and all dead. Mostly dead is slightly alive." And that's just where the HBTG boys found themselves after an energy draining 2-month production delay -- rusty, slightly discombobulated, and, yes, probably a little drunker than advisable...but still slightly ALIVE and, in fact, overflowing with joy after a visit to one of their all time favorite IRL bars, SW Portland's The Old Barn (9656 SW Barbur Blvd., Est. 1981). A conversation with longtime owners and former proprietors Johnny and Karri Malafouris, and the city's best Sunday NFL bartender / TV whisperer Gina Angerilli, sent the boys down memory lane with this classically unpretentious, ramshackle, mass transit adjacent neighborhood joint, where the drinks are honest and plentiful, the food distinct and filling, and the sports-centric atmosphere more comfortable than your living room couch on Thanksgiving day. It's the kind of place modern Portland too often takes for granted and that veteran bar owners feel is slowly slipping from our consciousness. But as long as The Old Barn and other blue collar neighborhood spots like it remain slightly alive, then there's hope for us all. Catherine Chandler is a jewelry artist I've known from my EtsyMetal Team days. Even back then, Catherine was a ray of light in our rather tight knit group and she was always eager to support ohers. She is still that light within our Instagram jewelry community… and I'm sure if Catherine follows you, she has cheered you on from the sidelines many times. Sitting down with Catherine felt like re-connecting with an old friend, but this is really the first time we've had a true one on one conversation. We talked about a number of things from her recent trip back to Australia where she continues to find inspiration and transitioning to full time as a jewelry artist, to the moments when our chosen craft can feel more like a job and how this is when we need to remember our why. But one of the things I loved most about my conversation that you'll hear today, was when Catherine shared the story behind one of her most meaningful projects. I won't give it away, but it demonstrates the heart felt relationships we can build with other makers and the beauty that can come when we are open to collaboration and honoring another artist's work. I really hope with the conversations on Slowmade feel like you are sitting there with us, drinking your coffee or tea, and enjoying time with some old (and maybe some new) friends. About Catherine... Catherine Chandler is a jeweler and metalsmith from Oregon. Having grown up in the forests of SW Portland and the broad hills of the Columbia River Gorge, Catherine brings an intense love of the Pacific Northwest to her work. With an affinity for clean lines and a great attention to detail, she creates modern and unique jewelry for the adventurous at heart. Sterling silver, gold, and unique stones are highlights in her one-of-a-kind and limited edition creations. Her work shows a fondness for abstraction and subtle details—influences from her time studying abroad in Australia. She has participated in numerous group shows, including exhibitions in the USA and Australia. Catherine graduated with a Bachelor of Visual Arts from the University of South Australia, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Oregon College of Art and Craft. When not traversing the trails around the area with her dog, Catherine can be found enjoying the outdoors with her husband or spending quality time with friends and family. Travis is a licensed acupuncturist who owns and operates and internal medicine clinic in SW Portland. He has worked as a clinician for many years and recoginzed that often patients' healing was limited by some other aspect of the history or their narratives around their own health. He often joked about wishing he had access to a shaman he could refer his patients to when they needed assistance breaking through health problems that had a more esoteric cause. When Oregon launched the legal framework for psilocbyin facilitation in 2023, it seemed that all that wishful thinking was manifesting, and he was in some of the first training cohorts for legal facilitators. Based on his own journeying with psilocybin and serving as a "trip-sitter" for friends doing their own exploration, he knew that psilocybin could be a tool to further the healing of his patients who had hit a block. After finishing his training program and looking out into the world of legal facilitation, he realized that their was a need to bring more conventional clinical skills to the toolkit of facilitators, and so the idea of creating Acadia Professional Learning was born. Along with his wife, who is a educator with more than 15 years of teaching experience, he built a state-approved training curriculum that combines the best practicies of both the psilocybin journey community and professional clinicians. This is a very meaningful podcast discussion for me as I not only get to catch up with a dear college friend I also get to deeply explore the occupational impact of how one's life path can evolve after acquiring a profound neuro divergence early in life. Ashley and I's paths in our early twenties crossed quite a bit however I never would have guessed I would ever become a therapy colleague with her over a decade after moving away from Olympia, WA. When I last was actively connected to Ashley's life she was the most prolific fiction and play writer I had ever met. She was destined to become a professional editor and facilitator of creative wonder. Her momentum as a writer was however stunted as it is for many of us with the sudden acquisition of a disabling experience. At age 25 Ashley acquired a cerebral vascular accident impacting her left side. This occupational disruption ended up fueling Ashley's passion to go back to school. She not only regained her motor function, but she also regained her voice, and new gifts, however, she could not develop these ambitions on her own, it took a village including occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy, brain injury support groups, vocational rehab, and the fight to self advocate for her educational accommodations. Connecting with Ashley I couldn't avoid the correlations between her life path and the challenges my friend Paul Johnson a leader in the WA disability rights movement in how hard he had to fight to access the ability to write in general and to access formal publishing in particular. His life story took over a decade to write and I was his support volunteer intern where it took over 2.5 years of active letter by letter word by word typing a revising. Because of Paul, I have learned to never take my voice and mobility for granted. I am so glad I was able to share Paul's work with Ashley with a new foundation of shared meaning as we all interconnected in our experiences of rare young adult neurodivergence and how that impacts and changes access to writing and our relationship to our own voice when you depend on supported communication to express yourself. Paul's family offered consent to continue sharing his story and our time together publically with the goal of inspiring others to tell their stories. Ashley's Request for community support for survivors of acquired brain injury! Please help save this wonderful organization through donations and volunteering. Sarah Bellum's Bakery launched in 2017 and officially opened its doors in Multnomah Village in SW Portland in 2018. They provide job training support for adults with acquired brain injuries. They also have volunteer opportunities in speech, occupational therapy, and rehabilitation psychology for students here at Pacific University. Check out the links below. On today's episode, we have the blessing of chatting with Rachel Brooks and we are talking all things YOGA! Rachel is the owner and an instructor at Seeking Space Yoga in SW Portland. She's a Portland-native and longtime advocate of accessible yoga. Rachel co-founded Seeking Space in part to open up yoga as an option for workers in Portland’s service and sex industries. It’s Rachel’s belief that yoga can help tremendously with anxiety, detox, and trauma and throughout her eighteen years in the service industry, Rachel found yoga to be a positive way she could wind down after shifts. She found herself looking for a place she could practice after her shifts and, seeing no existing options, decided to take a leap of faith and Seeking Space Yoga was born. You can find Rachel @SeekingSpaceYoga on Instagram or visit her website at www.SeekingSpaceYoga.com

On Feb. 21, 2020, we made a triumphant return to newly-reopened Renner’s Grill (56:35), 22 months after a devastating kitchen fire closed the longtime anchor of SW Portland’s Multnomah Village bar scene. This comeback story was to be paired with a forthcoming visit to the enigmatic Stanich’s in what we were calling our “Lazarus” or “Flatliners” episode -- two old bars pronounced dead that somehow returned to tell the tale. Now, every drinking establishment in the metro area will face the same improbable challenge. On March 16, COVID-19 social distancing efforts forced every bar, tavern, saloon, pub, and lounge in the state to put its stools on the counter and send its staff into the virtual unemployment line. Even as our local health news slowly improves, they all face an uncertain future. We discussed it all over several rounds in our Steinhaus/Buddy’s Lounge glassware, in front of our ubiquitous, soul-sucking Zoom cameras in this very special, history in the making episode of HBTG...dedicated to every single person who has brought us joy one glass at a time in bars throughout Portland and beyond. We can’t wait to see you again soon...
On a blustery Thanksgiving eve, Nov. 27, 2019, we expressed our gratitude for our first “podiversary” and two venerable bars anchored by iconic menu items. It was a marathon exploration/recording session that began at 3 p.m. and ended past midnight, with — as this episode may reveal — no shortage of libations in between. First, we traveled deep into the western farmlands of Washington County, stepping out of the cold afternoon wind and into the sleepy, but warm Helvetia Tavern (08:54) for the best burger and beer a personal check can buy. Several (possibly ill-advised) pit stops later, we landed at Cider Mill (37:44) where we rediscovered our love for this lively SW Portland survivor over chicken hearts and a few more cold ones. Enjoy the latest deep-fried History by the Glass!

The Cottonwood School in SW Portland emphasizes place-based learning, but when Sarah Anderson started teaching civil rights to her middle school students, she discovered that materials about Oregon’s civil rights history were scarce. She set out to remedy that. A curriculum called “Civil Rights and Civil Wrongs: The Black History of Portland, Oregon” is the result of her efforts, and Anderson is sharing it in a teacher workshop for the second time this summer. She hopes to empower educators from across the city to use it in their classrooms. We hear from Sarah Anderson as well as Darrell Millner, professor emeritus of African American Studies at Portland State University, who helped develop the curriculum.

Is it possible to write a movie whose dialogue consists solely of ham-fisted doctor puns? Is it necessary to film an entire movie in a tiny park in unincorporated SW Portland even though it mostly takes place indoors, and Oregon is never even mentioned or seen? Why does this movie even exist? Join us as we demand answers from the 1992 horror/slasher film "Dr. Giggles," the first movie production of Portland's own Dark Horse Comics. [Insert medical pun here]
