On December 7, 1958, the Martin family of Portland, Oregon—Kenneth, Barbara, and their three daughters—set off for a Sunday drive to gather Christmas greenery. They were never seen alive again. What began as a cheerful holiday tradition ended in one of the most baffling disappearances in Oregon history. Was it a tragic accident on the winding roads of the Columbia River Gorge? Or was something far more sinister at play—something involving suspicious sightings, ex-convicts, and a stolen gun? Decades later, new discoveries raise even more questions. What really happened to the Martins—and why did the river keep their secrets for so long? For additional information about this case, make sure to read J.B. Congress is considering cuts to Medicaid that would affect millions of Americans. Under a current proposal, nearly half of the Oregonians enrolled in the Oregon Health Plan would be required to prove they’re working or volunteering 80 hours a month to keep their coverage. In Oregon, some fear changes to Medicaid could hit healthcare in rural communities especially hard. Evan Saulino is a family physician providing clinical care in the Columbia River Gorge. His commentary on possible cuts to Medicaid was recently featured in the Oregon Capital Chronicle. He joins us with details of his concerns and how federal changes to Medicaid would affect rural healthcare.

It's not every day that you get a brand new attraction in the Columbia River Gorge. On this week's episode of Peak Northwest, we head out to the new Mitchell Point Tunnel, open to pedestrians and cyclists only, found on the Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail west of Hood River. The 665-foot tunnel, which features rock windows that open to spectacular views of the Columbia Gorge, is one of the most impressive human-made attractions in the Columbia Gorge. It will be a major part of the 73-mile bike trail when that project is finally completed. Here are some highlights from this week's show: What is the Mitchell Point tunnel? The tunnel is a recreation of a historic tunnel by the same name. How does this fit in to the larger Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail? How to get to the tunnel, and what else to do while you're there. Subscribe to Peak Northwest on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify or anywhere you listen to podcasts. Pick one (or three!) and get a fresh burst of color into your life. Here are some highlights from this week's show: Why Dog Mountain is everybody's go-to wildflower hike. In 2010, tonight's guest, Ashlea Stinnett, moved into a house that was located just off the Columbia River Gorge, in Oregon, with her partner. The house was on a hill, so Ashlea had a good view of the Columbia River. Not long after moving in, Ashlea and her partner started to have UFO sightings, while sitting on their two-story deck. Those UFO sightings piqued her interest in paranormal phenomena in the Pacific Northwest. Not long after researching such phenomena there, in the PNW, she discovered the rich history of Sasquatch sightings. That discovery lead her to meeting people who were well versed, when it came to Sasquatch. Fast forward to 2013, which is when she had her first Sasquatch-related experience, on Mount Adams, in Washington State. That was far from the only experience she'd ever have with them, however. Many more experiences were yet to come, including a full-on sighting last September. We hope you'll tune in and listen to her share that sighting and a lot of other experiences she's had with you.If you'd like to visit Ashlea's YouTube Channel, which we hope you will, please go to…https://www.youtube.com/@cryptocryptid1487If you've had a Bigfoot sighting and would like to be a guest, on the show, please go to https://MyBigfootSighting.com and let us know. Oregonians are no doubt familiar with Mount Hood and the Columbia River Gorge, two of the state's most popular places to hike, swim, ski and explore, but the two spots are now getting more attention as one world-class destination. Global travel guide Lonely Planet recently named Mount Hood and the Columbia Gorge as one of the best regions to visit for 2025, ranked alongside spots in Switzerland and Nepal. While interconnected and easy to navigate, the two areas feature an overwhelming number of things to do, places to see, and spots to eat and drink. On this week's episode of Peak Northwest, we highlight some of the best of the best attractions on the mountain and by the river, creating a rough itinerary for anyone visiting the area or planning a trip for out-of-towners. Here are some highlights from this week's show: What's the best way to navigate the mountain and gorge? The two best places to stay the night. How to choose among all the Columbia Gorge waterfalls. The excitement swirling around AI often obscures the infrastructure that makes it possible. Since long before AI was at the forefront of technology discussions, datacenters have been powering technology and Jonathan Schroth returns to discuss datacenter markets and the complex forces that impact them with host Eric Hanselman. Datacenter demand is driven by the need for capacity in power, as well as interconnection. Recent subsea cable landings in the Pacific Northwest that link Pacific and Asian markets are driving demand in Oregon and Vancouver. That's in spite of higher costs in the latter. Interconnection is also a factor in Toronto. Constraints on power capacity are impacting these markets, as well as shaping the situation across Canada. What was once plentiful hydroelectric power around the Columbia River Gorge, is seen as beginning to plateau while demand continues to increase. The situation is the same in Eastern Canada, as winter power demands are exceeding what can be delivered by hydro. In the distant future, nuclear power could play a role, if small modular reactor designs can be deployed, but some locations, such as Oregon, have nuclear bans in place. Once again, key factors beyond the underlying technologies are the key factors in growth. What's in a name? Or, in this case, what's in an Oregon place name? On this week's episode of Peak Northwest, we're looking into the history behind the names of some of Oregon's most beloved landmarks, pulling out some truly weird and wild stories from the Southern Oregon to the Columbia River Gorge. Forget everything you think you know about where our natural landmarks got their names. Here are some highlights from this week's show: How Mount Hood and the Columbia River both trace their names back to boats. A pair of Columbia Gorge landmarks with surprising histories. You don't need me to tell you how artificial intelligence (AI) is impacting the power grid; you can just ask AI. Claude, an AI assistant created by Anthropic, told POWER, “AI training and inference are driving unprecedented demand for data center capacity, particularly due to large language models and other compute-intensive AI workloads.” It also said, “AI servers, especially those with multiple GPUs [graphics processing units], require significantly more power per rack than traditional servers—often 2–4x higher power density.” So, what does that mean for power grid operators and electricity suppliers? Claude said there could be several effects, including local grid strain in AI hub regions, the need for upgraded transmission infrastructure, higher baseline power consumption, and potential grid stability issues in peak usage periods. Notably, it said AI data centers tend to cluster in specific regions with favorable power costs and regulations, creating “hotspots” of extreme power demand. Sheldon Kimber, founder and CEO of Intersect Power, a clean energy company that develops, owns, and operates a base portfolio of 2.2 GW of operating solar PV and 2.4 GWh of storage in operation or construction, understands the challenges data centers present for the grid. As a guest on The POWER Podcast, Kimber suggested the only way to meet the massive increase in power demand coming from data centers is with scalable behind-the-meter solutions. “These assets may still touch the grid—they may still have some reliance on the grid—but they're going to have to bring with them an enormous amount of behind-the-meter generation and storage and other things to make sure that they are flexible enough that the grid can integrate them without creating such a strain on the grid, on rate payers, and on the utilities that service them,” Kimber said. Yet, data center developers have not traditionally kept power top-of-mind. “The data center market to date has been more of a real estate development game,” Kimber explained. “How close to a labor pool are you? What does it look like on the fiber side? What does the land look like?” He said electric power service was certainly part of the equation, but it was more like part of a “balanced breakfast of real estate criteria,” rather than a top priority for siting a data center. In today's environment, that needs to change. Kimber said Intersect Power has been talking to data center companies for at least three years, pitching them on the idea of siting data centers behind-the-meter at some of his projects. The response has been lukewarm at best. Most of the companies want to keep their data centers in already well-established hubs, such as in northern Virginia; Santa Clara, California; or the Columbia River Gorge region in Oregon, for example. Kimber's comeback has been, “Tell us when you're ready to site for ‘Power First.' ” What “Power First” means is simple. Start with power, and the availability of power, as the first criteria, and screen out all the sites that don't have power. “To date, data center development that was not ‘Power First' has really been focused on: ‘What does the plug look like?' ” Kimber said. In other words: How is the developer connecting the data center to the power grid—or plugging in? The developers basically assumed that if they could get connected to the grid, the local utility would find a way to supply the electricity needed. However, it's getting harder and harder for utilities to provide what developers are asking for. “The realization that the grid just isn't going to be able to provide power in most of the places that people want it is now causing a lot of data center customers to re-evaluate the need to move from where they are. And when they're making those moves, obviously, the first thing that's coming to mind is: ‘Well, if I'm going to have to move anyway, I might as well move to where the binding constraint, which is power, is no longer a constraint,' ” he said.

“There's something we've always told people we aspire to, which was we wanted it to be a microcosm of the best of this region, right? So we travel a ton to this day and the food in the Pacific Northwest is unmatched. The coffee is unmatched. And we did the design ourselves, the architecture was there, the energy efficiency is unmatched. And so I do think that the things that our region is known for, which is mainly food and craft, it's a little bit of a microcosm of those values in the building.” We're in great company with Jonathan Cohen & Jessie Burke, the husband and wife duo behind The Society Hotel, a collection of experience-focused boutique hotels built with unique reclaimed buildings in Portland, Oregon and Bingen, Washington, calling all travelers, wild spirits and creative minds to encounter a stay unlike any other. Dave's pick this week is the family comedy sci-fi adventure, Short Circuit from 1986. Short Circuit was a collaborative effort that blended innovative special effects with a light-hearted, family-friendly narrative. Directed by John Badham, the film tells the story of a military robot, Number 5, who gains sentience after being struck by lightning. The production was notable for its advanced use of robotics and puppetry to bring the character of Number 5 to life. Special effects supervisor Syd Mead, who had previously worked on films like "Blade Runner" and "Tron," was instrumental in designing the robot, creating a character that was both mechanically believable and endearing. The use of practical effects and on-set puppetry, operated by a team of puppeteers, gave Number 5 a lifelike presence that CGI could not have achieved at the time. Filming took place in various locations around Oregon, including Astoria and the Columbia River Gorge, which provided picturesque and diverse backdrops for the movie's action and comedic sequences. The cast, featuring Ally Sheedy as Stephanie Speck and Steve Guttenberg as Newton Crosby, brought warmth and humor to the story, further enhanced by the chemistry between the human characters and the robotic protagonist. The production faced challenges, such as ensuring the robot's functionality and coordinating complex scenes involving the animatronics, but the crew's dedication paid off. "Short Circuit" was well-received upon its release, praised for its charming story, groundbreaking special effects, and the memorable character of Number 5, which quickly became a cultural icon of the 1980s. Carved by the once-wild Columbia River, the Columbia River Gorge is a dramatic canyon that snakes through the Cascade Range in the Pacific Northwest on its way to the Pacific Ocean. It's an area of stunning natural beauty with endless outdoor adventure options. Using the town of Hood River, Oregon, as our home base, we recently visited the gorge in search of waterfalls. (The area has nearly 100.) And being that it was spring when we were there, the waterfalls did not disappoint -- especially the famous Multnomah Falls – the most-visited single natural attraction in the Pacific Northwest. In this episode, we talk about several of the best waterfalls in the area, a couple of breathtaking trails to hike close to Hood River, a state park you won't want to miss, and some of the restaurants and breweries we visited. We also share a little history of the area. On June 3, 2016, a train carrying crude oil derailed in Mosier, a Wasco County community in the Columbia River Gorge. Several rail cars caught fire and oil leaked into the Columbia River. For some officials, the incident was a wake-up call. Trains carrying oil regularly pass through the Columbia River Gorge. The Martin Family loaded into their cream-and-red station wagon for a trip up the highway on December 7, 1958. The family was on the hunt for a Christmas tree and greens to make wreaths. From Portland, they drove east into the Columbia River Gorge. Parents Ken(54) and Barbara(48, I know) were in the front, with Ken driving, and their daughters Suzie, Virginia, and Barbie were in the back.As night fell on the Martins' block, a few neighbors noticed the family hadn't returned. The station wagon wasn't parked under the carport, and the lights inside the home were out. No one was home, and they would never be home again. Five members of the Martin family vanished that day, most of them without a trace.Episode Host: Josh McCulloughFor photos and sources for today's episode, check out the Murder in the Rain Episode Blog.
