Show #713 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 1st March 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. MODEL Y BEING STOCKPILED AT FREMONT "Tesla has begun preparations for the first set of Model Y deliveries that are scheduled to take place as early as March 15. Car carriers loaded with Tesla’s all-electric crossover were spotted over the weekend alongside a stockpile of Model Y at the company’s factory lot in Fremont, California." reports Gene at Teslarati: "Tesla enthusiast Wilson Lam shared photos of a fleet of Model Y being loaded onto car carriers over the weekend, a signal that the electric carmaker is in the final stages of delivery preparation. While it’s unclear it the Model Y vehicles spotted in car haulers are display vehicles for showrooms or customer cars, the fleet of Tesla crossovers in Deep Blue Metallic, Pearl White Multi-Coat, and Red Multi-Coat joins dozens of other Model Y sightings taking place in California." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-y-fremont-lot-car-carrier-hauler/ FIRST IMAGES OF THE TESLA MODEL Y INTERIOR IN THE WILD mrleetesla on Twitter -two USB-C in the rear on the rear vent cover.. 12v outlet in the trunk. TESLA CHINA STARTS SHANGHAI GIGAFACTORY 3 PHASE 2 TO BUILD MODEL Y "Tesla China has started construction on Phase 2 of Gigafactory 3 Shanghai. This will likely support Tesla Model Y production. This work started immediately after Phase 1.5 which was for the Battery and Powertrain workshop. In a video, Jason Yang calls it Phase 3." according to NextBigFuture.com. https://www.nextbigfuture.com/2020/03/tesla-china-starts-shanghai-gigafactory-3-phase-2-to-build-model-y.html BYD TO DELIVER 134 ELECTRIC BUSES TO LOS ANGELES LA Mayor Eric Garcetti announced this week that the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) placed the largest order for electric buses in U.S. history — 134 of them will come from BYD. The record-breaking order helps advance the core goals of Mayor Garcetti’s recently signed Executive Directive — “L.A.’s Green New Deal: Leading By Example” — which includes measures to make LADOT’s bus fleet entirely emissions-free in time for the opening ceremonies of the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. STREETSCOOTER: DEUTSCHE POST TO CEASE ELECTRIC VAN PRODUCTION "Deutsche Post/DHL announces they will cease the manufacturing of their StreetScooter electric vans before the end of this year. The Group’s CEO Frank Appel has given up on finding a buyer for its subsidiary, even though it looked as if a deal with China’s Chery was as good as made." writes electrive: "StreetScooter wants to concentrate on the operation of the current fleet alone, which comprises 11,000 electric vans and is to be expanded to 15,000. Less than six months ago, StreetScooter and Chinese EV manufacturer Chery signed a letter of intent for a joint venture during German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s trip to China. Back then, in September, Chery and StreetScooter announced that they wanted to set up a joint venture in China. https://www.electrive.com/2020/02/29/deutsche-post-to-cease-streetscooter-production/ IS THIS THE MERCEDES EQE? "This could be our first look at the E-Class' electric brother. Mercedes-Benz’s electrification push will continue with three new hybrids planned for a release later this year together with the fully-electric EQA crossover. A product presentation from December 2019 hinted we could also see the EV flagship of the brand - the EQS sedan, before the year’s end but nothing has been confirmed yet. It turns out there might be yet another electric sedan in the works and this video could be our first look at it." says Yahoo! today: "The clip shows two Mercedes prototypes and one of them is obviously the EQS. The other one, however, features a modified and shortened body, which hints we could be looking at the upcoming EQE EV. Think of it as the electric version of today’s E-Class, similar to what the EQS will be for the S-Class." https://sports.yahoo.com/mercedes-eqe-082012634.html CHARGEPOINT CEO EXPLAINS WHY HE ORDERED A TESLA MODEL Y "When it came time for Pasquale Romano, the CEO of the electric-vehicle charging company ChargePoint, to choose his next EV, it was a close call between Tesla's Model Y SUV and the Ford Mustang Mach-E SUV." writes Business Insider: "Ultimately, the Model Y won out due to its release date and Romano's experience with Tesla's Model S sedan, Romano told Business Insider. On paper, the Model Y and Mustang Mach-E are similar in many areas, though the Model Y has an edge in range, starting price, seating capacity, and cargo space. It remains to be seen which of the two electric-vehicles shoppers will prefer, though there have been signs from Tesla and Ford suggesting each could ending up ranking among the best-selling EVs. " https://www.businessinsider.com/chargepoint-ceo-chose-tesla-model-y-ford-mustang-mach-e-2020-2?r=US&IR=T QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWERS MARTIN YOUNG My next door neighbor is a Porsche Certified Instructor who teaches new owners how to handle their cars at Porsche Track Experiences here in the Southeast. After some minor cajoling, he finally agreed to take my Chevy Volt out for a spin. We had only been in the car for about 3 minutes when he began to smile and shake his head at how good the performance was. As we drove up a steep and curvy mountain road, he was having so much fun he actually laughed out loud! When we were climbing up a particularly steep section, he exclaimed, "It's actually accelerating going up this!" As we came back down, he marveled at the regenerative braking. Later, after we pulled back into my driveway, he put it in park and turned to me...he smiled and stuck out his hand. As I shook it, he said, "Thank you. I had no idea." So to my fellow EV owners, I say this: You do not have to convince your friends and family that EVs are great. All that you have to do is convince them to drive your car. Once they are behind the wheel, the car will show them how great EVs really are! LEANNE ROBERTS I think the only way to convince them is to get them in one, first as a passenger and then get them to drive one. The way we got into EVs was through driving my brothers Nissan Leaf. There are other options out there such as the EV Experience Days through Octopus which I think is a great idea to test drive one and get rid of any FUD. I do think that drivers days and dealership deals for weekend test drives would only help increase the uptake. Stephen Troyer • 5 days ago How to persuade someone to buy an EV. Step one, buy one for yourself. Step two, offer to give rides or let people test drive. (Just don't badger people about it.) Step three, live with the EV and answer any questions about what it's like, how it's holding up, what maintenance and charging is like I remember a news item from this show saying that the #1 influence on people buying EVs is their friends buying EVs. D R-K • 5 days ago If you can bear to let someone else get behind the wheel... let them borrow your car for four days, say Thursday to Sunday... make sure you have a tracker because getting it back will not be easy. The software glitches may force to abandon the EV's planned sales launch in summer, Manager Magazin reported." reports Automotive News Europe: "The problems stem from the basic architecture of the ID3's software, which was developed "too hastily," the magazine said, citing VW's own experts. Many of the system's elements do not understand each other, leading to dropouts and other difficulties, the report said. Hundreds of test drivers of the car are reporting up to 300 errors a day, the magazine said. More than 10,000 technicians are trying to solve the problems, which could delay the ID3's launch by up to a year, the report said. A VW spokesman told Automotive News Europe that the timeline for the ID3 has not changed and the car will be launched this summer." https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/vw-id3-software-problems-threaten-summer-launch-report-says CHINA'S CATL AIMS TO RAISE $2.85 BILLION FOR EV BATTERY PROJECTS "CATL, China's top electric vehicle battery maker, said it aims to raise up to 20 billion yuan ($2.85 billion) in a private placement of shares to fund its battery projects and boost working capital." writes Autoblog: "The fundraising will help CATL to expand its battery-making capacity in Fujian, Jiangsu and Sichuan, as well as an energy storage research project, the company said in a filing to the Shenzhen stock exchange late Wednesday. The company has partnerships with Tesla, Volkswagen and BMW. In a separate filing on Wednesday, the battery maker said it plans to invest 10 billion yuan in a battery manufacturing base in Ningde, where it is headquartered." https://www.autoblog.com/2020/02/28/catl-electric-car-battery-maker-funding/ GILLETTE STADIUM SCORES A TOUCHDOWN WITH 50 NEW ENEL X EV CHARGERS "Gillette Stadium is diving into the wonderful world of EV charging with the installation of 50 new JuiceBox Pro 32 amp units mounted on 25 JuicePedestals." says Kyle Field at CleanTechnica: "The new stations will provide EV charging services to patrons of the stadium as they arrive to watch the New England Patriots or the New England Revolution." https://cleantechnica.com/2020/02/28/gillette-stadium-scores-a-touchdown-with-50-new-enel-x-ev-chargers/ TESLA’S MASSIVE 1GWH MEGAPACK BATTERY PROJECT WITH PG&E IS APPROVED "Tesla’s massive project to deploy 1GWh of Megapacks to create a giant energy storage system in California with PG&E has received approval from the local authorities." says Electrek: "It involves four separate energy storage projects and two of them should become the world’s largest battery systems. the Tesla project will be a 182.5MW / 730MWh, which could eventually go up to 1.1GWh. Tesla is listing the project as having a total capacity of 1,200MWh, which would mean that each Megapack has a capacity of 2,673kWh. The total capacity of those 449 Megapacks represents more energy capacity than Tesla Energy deployed throughout its first 3 years of operation – all Powerpacks and Powerwalls combined." In the comments: "This will replace 3 existing gas plants and can be built in less than a year. This is the very definition of efficiency and efficiency eventually always wins." Notice that the 1,200 MW-hr energy rating is 4x the 300 MW power rating; that is, the packs can supply the peak power rating for about 4 hours. That's a big portion of the evening power peak when most people get home from work and turn on lots of appliances and home heating/cooling. Peak power can be 10x the cost of regular power and is usually supplied by natural gas fired steam turbines. This is a smart move by PG&E to reduce the total cost of electricity to their customers. While it's only a first step given the magnitude of the power consumption on the grid, it is an indicator of where technology is taking us in grid modernization. https://electrek.co/2020/02/27/tesla-1gwh-megapack-battery-project-pge-approved/ A SNAPSHOT OF EU NEW PASSENGER CAR MARKETS IN JANUARY Starting this year, manufacturers in the European Union (EU) must comply with the next phase of mandatory CO2 standards for new vehicle fleets. An average fleet-wide target of 95 grams per kilometer (g/km) applies to 95% of the new passenger cars in 2020, and will apply to the whole new car fleet from 2021." says the ICCT.org: "In France, for example, the average CO2 level of new cars dropped from 113 g/km in December to 96 g/km in January—a 15% improvement within only a month's time. In 2020, every low-emission vehicle registered counts twice towards manufacturers’ average CO2 emissions. Norway has implemented a strong vehicle tax based on CO2 and NOx emissions and vehicle weight. In Germany, electric vehicles gained in popularity, increasing from a level of 4% in December 2019 to 6.5% in January 2020. . It seems as if manufacturers are increasingly revealing their hands, not only showcasing new electric models but also marketing them in large quantities." https://theicct.org/blog/staff/snapshot-eu-new-pv-markets-jan2020 MERCEDES TEASES THREE NEW PLUG-IN HYBRIDS "Mercedes is gearing up to introduce three new plug-in hybrid models this month starting with an announcement on their corporate Facebook page. According to the video, Mercedes plans to introduce a plug-in hybrid version of the GLA SUV, CLA Sedan, and finally the CLA Shooting Brake. Is the market ready for an electrified line-up of budget-friendly Mercedes products? " asks Motor1: "Each of these three vehicles will certainly use almost identical powertrains which makes it quite easy for Mercedes to launch all three versions at once." https://www.motor1.com/news/401473/mercedes-reveal-three-plugin-hybrids/ NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week… I’m waving a magic wand and installing a charge point of any speed or type free of charge for you – what is it, where and why. Head 2 Head host Jonny Lieberman stops in to compare the Porsche Taycan with Tesla's Model S. They debate the future of electric cars, their personal car design preferences, and the latest models. Later, they speak with Rick Schad, COO of the inaugural Audrain's Newport Concours & Motor Week, who shares everything fans can look forward to at the event taking place on Oct. 3-6.
In this episode, Marcello Sukhdeo talks about how a Tesla car hits a parked police vehicle and the driver claimed it was in autopilot mode. And it looks like we may be replacing our cracked, peeled, rusting license plates with digital license plates, on our cars, in the near future. Show Notes There is yet another case where a car driving in "autopilot" mode crashed recently. This time it's Tesla's Model S. The car crashed into an unoccupied, parked police vehicle in Laguna Beach, California. The driver told investigators the Tesla was in “Autopilot” mode at the time. Photos of the crash scene show extensive damage to the front end of the Tesla and the rear side of the police vehicle. Autopilot is a semi-autonomous technology that Tesla says is a form of advanced cruise control. So, the car was in advanced cruise control mode when it hit the parked police car. Digital license plates With everything going digital these days, it would be so cool to have a digital license plate. That is what California governor Jerry Brown wanted to get going five years ago when he signed a legislation authorizing digital license plates to be sold in California. Now finally, these new digital display boards are hitting the streets. Those who are opting to buy the digital plates can register their vehicles electronically and get rid of the need to physically place stickers on their license plates each year. This of course would save money for the state. The digital plates come with their own computer chips, batteries, and wireless communication systems. They also may be able to display personal messages — if the DMV decides to allow that. Dealerships are expected to sell the plates for $699, not including installation costs. Users also must pay a monthly fee of about $7. YouTube and Teens With the fall out with Facebook, teens are more interested than ever in YouTube. A recent study conducted by Pew Research Center, reveals that 85 per cent of teenagers (ages 13–17) say they use the platform. Closely behind are Instagram (72 per cent) and Snapchat (69 per cent). These findings indicate an ongoing trend among teenagers of moving away from platforms like Facebook in recent years. A 2015 report pointed to 71 per cent of teens who reported themselves as Facebook users; today, that number is around 51 per cent. Welcome to LPLE, "Let's Practice Listening in English!" Jesse and Andrew talk about the Tesla Model 3, and Andrew explains how automatic self-driving cars work and why the will become a thing of the future. Join in the conversation! Follow us on Twitter and Facebook to ask us questions about English conversation and meet other English language learners all over the world. Twitter: @LPLEDialogFM Facebook: facebook.com/LPLEDialogFM TRANSCRIPT Intro [Jesse]: Hi everyone. My name is Jesse Robbins, and welcome to LPLE from Dialogue FM. We're the podcast that lets you practice listening in English. We speak English slowly and clearly so that you can follow along and understand native English speakers more easily. I'm excited to help you improve your English listening skills, as well as help you learn new vocabulary, grammar, and idioms commonly heard and conversation among native English speakers. If you want to practice listening in English, then we invite you to join our conversation. Jesse: Hi, Andrew. Andrew: Hey, Jesse. Jesse: About a month ago, Tesla had made available for pre-order the Model 3. Andrew: That's right. Their new, smaller car; their smaller electric car that is more affordable so that more people will be able to buy it. Jesse: That's exciting. It's-... It's big news all around. It's an electric car, and it's also a... Andrew: ...Autonomous car. It's a car that can at least partially drive itself when you are going from one place to another. So, you don't need to be using the gas and the steering all of the time. Jesse: Now, we like the idea of having an electric car, but I'm really fascinated with this self-driving aspect. This is brand new technology! Andrew: It's a big deal. It's never been done before very well, and it's being tested right now on tens of thousands of Teslas that are already out there on the roads, so it is getting better very, very fast. Jesse: Right now, in Seattle and let's just say the Puget Sound, in general--Redmond, Bellevue, places where there's lots of technology companies... Andrew: Right. Jesse: And, when I say that there's places where there's technology companies, I also mean that there is plenty of people with large salaries who can afford self-driving cars right now. Andrew: Right. We're talking about places in the west coast of America like Seattle and San Francisco where people who are interested in technology--also, have enough money to try products when they're still newer and a little bit more expensive--they are buying Tesla's Model S cars more often than other parts of the country and more often than most of the world. And, so, we are lucky enough to live in a city where there are a lot of Teslas out on the road, and one of the unique things about this car is that after most of the people had bought theirs, the company that made the car sent out an update to the software that runs it, and suddenly these cars that were normal cars powered by electricity suddenly were electric cars that were also able to drive themselves for parts of trips, so highway trips and other long stretches of road that were well-marked. Jesse: Overnight, people who owned that car received a self-driving car. Andrew: That's right. It's like getting an update to the software on your phone, only this is happening to the car that's parked in your garage. On Tuesday, you drive to work like a normal person having to control the steering wheel and the gas and the turn signals, and you come home, you park it, you get up the next day, and suddenly your car can drive itself to work while you keep an eye on it to make sure that everything's going well. Jesse: Is it safe to say that currently on our roads right now there are self-driving cars? Andrew: Yes, almost every day on freeways and highways across America and probably parts of Europe and Asia, as well. The cars don't need a map to follow, they can just use the GPS that's built in, and they look at the actual road that they're on to determine where lanes are, and they use radar and sonar to figure out where other cars are. So, they're actually driving in reaction to the vehicles around them. That means that when cars in front of you slow down and go lower than the speed limit, your car sees them slowing down and slows down, as well. If you want to change lanes, you put on the turn signal and then the car looks to make sure that there is space, and then accelerates and turns the wheel automatically to move into the new lane. You're not touching the gas-... the gas pedal, you're not touching the steering wheel; the car does all of this by itself. Jesse: Now that there are self-driving cars on the road right now, are people actually using that feature, or have people become comfortable with the idea of letting their car do the driving for them? Andrew: That's a good question. I think-... I think some people are ready to trust the vehicles and other people are going to take some time to get used to the idea, because this is the first time that this has been possible on a normal roadway. And, I think that most people feel like driving on the road, especially at high speed like on a highway, is a dangerous task or one that is unpredictable, because people could move in front of you and cut you off, they could slow down really fast if there's a traffic jam, you might need to change lanes and try to find a gap that is big enough for your car to fit in, and all of these things are actually quite hard for humans to do driving behind the wheel. And, so, the idea that they would trust a computer in their car to do it for them is really uncertain and unsettling for them. But, actually, what their finding with all of this testing is that the computer is actually paying closer attention than you could to what's going on on the road around you. So, when someone stops suddenly in front of you it might take you half of a second to find out that it's happening, and then another quarter of a second to react and put your foot on the brake; the computer can see that and hit the brakes immediately. And, so, it's actually much safer to allow the computers to make these decisions for you. Jesse: So, the Model 3 is going to now have the feature of automated driving. Andrew: That's right. So, right now the vehicles on the road that can do this are mainly from the Tesla car company, and they're mainly in the Model S, which is their luxury vehicle. It costs a lot of money, it's about $70- or $80,000 US to buy new. And, so, only the more wealthy people in our city have them, and we just see them on the road when people are commuting. The new vehicle, the Model 3, is going to be about one-third of that price, it's going to be about $35,000 to buy one of these cars, which is coming out in a couple of years; but, the automatic driving part of the car--those features which they call "autopilot"--are going to be available no matter what on all of those vehicles. So, suddenly, in 2019 or so, they're going to be a lot more of these cars out on the road than there are now, all driving themselves and reacting to traffic and other vehicles on their own. Jesse: That makes me really excited considering after work, for example, I'm mentally exhausted, so the idea of getting in my car, and then letting the car drive for me to take me home, or to take me to my friend's house or, to come hang out at a bar is really nice because I can just get in the car, turn off my brain, relax, take a nap-... Would you say that's recommended, or should I, as the driver sitting in the driver's seat, still be alert and still need to take control over the car. Andrew: Right now, it's important that drivers in these automatic vehicles be paying attention, and sitting in the driver's seat, and be ready to take over in case something goes wrong. Right now, the cars that are driving automatically can keep track of the road when the road is predictable, when the lines are clear between the lanes, and when the routes are well marked. But, when things get complicated in neighborhood streets, at slower speeds, when there are lots of pedestrians around, and when there might be something unexpected like construction or pedestrians walking across the street, the cars are worse at noticing and reacting to those situations. Usually, they are playing it safe, and, so, they will stop and refuse to move so that they don't hit something, so it's not like they're going to run over a small child crossing the street. But, that means that the cars are most automatic when they are on the freeway taking long drives. So, it's not a good idea to fall asleep at the wheel just yet; that might be more of an option in the future. Right now, think of it as a fancy form of cruise control: You set your speed, you set your destination, you let the car take you there, and it will react to traffic and move into lanes when you want it to, and you don't need to pay attention to traffic slowing ahead, but you still need to be awake, and you need to be ready to take over the wheel in case something happens that the car doesn't know what to do with. This is just a preview of what's to come, though, because these autopilot cars have only been around for less than two years, and they're already out there driving on the freeways in large numbers. They're getting better all the time, and in the very near future we're going to have a lot of cars on the road that don't need us to help him get around; and that's going to be a very exciting time. Jesse: We are truly living in the future. Outro [Jesse]: Thank you for listening to this episode of LPLE, Let's Practice Listening in English, from Dialog.FM. Well, the Ford hit parade continues, and this week we have the hottest new star out of the Motor City, the Fusion, parked in the Autoline Garage. But, more importantly, to get the back story behind this four-door looker, we have invited John Jraiche, the vehicle's chief engineer. We'll be asking him what Ford has done differently to turn out a vehicle that is truly a world-class car. And, you can count on a discussion of some of the biggest news stories of the week as well: the U.S. is set to dominate worldwide oil production in the near future; Tesla's Model S wins Motor Trend Car of the Year; and Ford PR outflanks GM in electrification announcements. Joining John McElroy to talk about this and a whole lot more is the Autoextremist, Peter De Lorenzo, and Alisa Priddle from the Detroit Free Press.
