It was 3am when he suggested astronomers could do better. This week, the Vera C Rubin Observatory unveiled first images from the telescope he envisioned. Unprecedented in so many ways, expect many discoveries to come from this unique machine.Another ambitious project known as SynHG kicks off this week, on the 25th anniversary of the publication of the first draft of the human genome, with a plan to develop the technology to potentially create a whole synthetic version. Jason Chin of MRC Laboratory of Molecular Laboratory in Cambridge and colleagues will be extending their previous work in synthetic biology to human DNA, whilst Joy Zheng of the University of Kent will be running a parallel project examining the ethical side of the objectives, and possibilities.Presenter: Roland Pease Producer: Alex Mansfield Production Coordinator: Jazz GeorgePhoto Credit: NSF–DOE Vera C. In this exclusive interview, Professor Mario Jurić reveals how the Vera Rubin Observatory accidentally discovered 2,000 asteroids in just 10 hours while testing its capabilities on the distant Virgo Cluster—transforming humanity's asteroid discovery rate from 20,000 per year globally to potentially over one million annually with a single telescope. Jurić explains how VRO's revolutionary multi-messenger astronomy capabilities will detect dark matter's effects and light simultaneously, automatically slewing to capture cosmic catastrophes like black hole collisions within 30 seconds of detection. From mapping dark matter in galaxy clusters 54 million light-years away to building Earth's first comprehensive planetary defense system against asteroid impacts, this conversation explores how one observatory is about to fundamentally change both our understanding of the universe and our ability to survive in it. — Please join my mailing list here

A new ESA telescope could help us understand how dark matter and dark energy influence the structure of the universe. Also, using both JWST and the Chandra Observatory, astronomers discover the oldest known black hole.Euclid Telescope's First Images UnveiledThis week, the European Space Agency unveiled the Euclid space telescope's first full-color images of the cosmos. The telescope has a wide field of view and is designed to take images of large swaths of the sky in both visible and infrared light. The telescope's designers hope that they will be able to create a detailed 3D map of the cosmos over the next six years and, with that map, begin to sort out the influences of dark matter and dark energy on the basic structure of the universe.Sophie Bushwick, technology editor at Scientific American, joins Ira to talk about the first images from the Euclid telescope and other stories from the week in science. They'll try to explain the recent conversation about ultraprocessed foods and discuss steps toward regulating AI coming from the Biden administration and a host of other countries; a move to rename some North American birds; and the tale of a fish that uses electrolocation and some shimmies to get a 3D map of its environment. Not Just Dying Stars: A Black Hole That Came From GasThis week, astronomers confirmed that they had found the oldest known black hole, thanks to the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The supermassive black hole formed when the universe was still a toddler, just 470 million years after the Big Bang. But its age isn't the only thing that makes it unusual.Astronomers long thought that the only way a black hole could form was through the collapse of a star. But this week's discovery confirms a theory that some black holes at this early stage in the universe formed from the condensation of clouds of gas. The theory purports that such black holes would produce superheated x-ray-emitting gas. Now, data from JWST and Chandra have helped confirm these x-ray signals from the newly discovered black hole. The findings are available via preprint and have been published in the journal Nature Astronomy.Ira sits down with Dr. Priyamvada Natarajan, a professor of astronomy and physics at Yale who helped develop this theory, to talk about how these unique black holes change our understanding of the early universe. To stay updated on all things science, sign up for Science Friday's newsletters. Physics Updates with Dean Leibovich from Nuclear Fusion, What We Have Seen So Far Through James Webb Space Telescope, Muon Wobbling the Standard Model

Cut To The Chase:

On this episode of Cut to the Chase: we give some of the exciting updates in the world of science. As we approach the Fall of 2023, this year continues to demonstrate that perhaps the scientists still don't know everything there is to know about our planet. Amongst the exciting updates, Dr. Adam Leibovich, our regular contributor on all things physics, has been named Dean of the Arts and Science at University of Pittsburgh.   So major congratulations are in order for that achievement.  Dr. Leibovich goes through three topics in this update. First, we go through the recent experiment with the muon, a subatomic particle, and what that means for the Standard Model. The experiment was run and confirmed the existence of other types of matter and energy that exist in the universe that scientists have not accounted for. So now the search for what these particles, matter, and energy are will keep physicists busy and excited for the future. Second, the James Webb Space Telescope has passed its one year anniversary. Dr. Leibovich goes through a few of the exciting things that the telescope has observed, including the most detailed infrared image of the universe ever created. And third, the ongoing dream of trying to make nuclear fusion a reality reached a recent milestone at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory which used 192 lasers to ignite a fusion reaction that produced more energy than was used to trigger it.   Although the old saying that we are “30 years away” from making nuclear fusion commercially viable might still be the case, the milestone was significant as it replicated the achievement of creating more energy than was used to create the reaction. As Dr. Leibovich notes, in the world of science, replication of the experiment is always significant. Now, the world just needs a significant amount of funding and effort to help make nuclear fusion commercially viable. Scaled up nuclear fusion could be a solution towards getting the world off fossil fuels without having to mine the planet for materials to making EVS, solar and wind powered apparatus. The Webb Space Telescope's first images, and why scratching sometimes makes you itchy

On this week's show: The first images from the James Webb Space Telescope hint at the science to come, and disentangling the itch-scratch cycle After years of delays, the James Webb Space Telescope launched at the end of December 2021. Now, NASA has released a few of the first full-color images captured by the instrument's enormous mirror. Staff Writer Daniel Clery joins host Sarah Crespi to discuss these first images and what they mean for the future of science from Webb. Next on the podcast, Jing Feng, principal investigator at the Center for Neurological and Psychiatric Research and Drug Discovery at the Chinese Academy of Sciences's Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica, discusses his Science Translational Medicine paper on why scratching sometimes triggers itching. It turns out, in cases of chronic itch there can be a miswiring in the skin. Cells that normally detect light touch instead connect with nerve fibers that convey a sensation of itchiness. This miswiring means light touches (such as scratching) are felt as itchiness—contributing to a vicious itch-scratch cycle. Also this week, in a sponsored segment from Science and the AAAS Custom Publishing Office, Sean Sanders, director and senior editor for the Custom Publishing Office, interviews Paul Bastard, chief resident in the department of pediatrics at the Necker Hospital for Sick Children in Paris and a researcher at the Imagine Institute in Paris and Rockefeller University. They talk about his work to shed light on susceptibility to COVID-19, which recently won him the Michelson Philanthropies & Science Prize for Immunology. This segment is sponsored by Michelson Philanthropies. This week's episode was produced with help from Podigy. Roland Pease talks to two astronomers who began working on the James Webb Space Telescope more than two decades ago and have now seen the first spectacular results of their labours. Marcia Rieke of the University of Arizona and JWST's senior project scientist John Mather discuss the highlights of the first four images. Also in the programme, geologists discover precisely where on the Red Planet the most ancient Martian meteorite came from - we speak to Anthony Lagain whose detective work identified the crater from which the rock was ejected into space. And what causes vast areas of the Indian Ocean to glow with strange light - a rare and mysterious phenomenon known as 'milky seas'? The world is a step closer to understanding this centuries' old maritime enigma thanks to the crew of a yacht sailing south of Java, atmospheric scientist Steven Miller and marine microbiologist Kenneth Nealson.
