We're getting back to the basics of hospice care with Hospice Social Worker Lisa Pahl to talk about who's on the hospice team and what each person brings to the care of patients and caregivers. This episode focuses on the core members of the hospice interdisciplinary team (doctor, nurse, social worker, and chaplain) as well as hospice aides (Certified Nurse Assistants) and hospice volunteers. Each person on a hospice team brings very specific and essential skills to the care of patients, and the support of their families and caregivers. The best care of a hospice patient includes everyone on the hospice team. This enables the care of the patient to meet all the needs of body, mind, and spirit. Patty Webster of The Conversation Project is talking with me about the swoopers and seagulls that are sometimes part of the caregiving experience. As part of her caregiving journey with her dad and siblings, Patty realized that she had been a “swooper”, offering her opinions about her dad's care during an intermittent visit. Here's what Patty says she learned: Supporting the primary caregiver is an important part of caregiving from a distance.“Swoopers” and “seagulls” tend to offer input into the actions of the primary caregiver creating a mess in the care of their Person. Patty and her siblings had to learn from her dad how he defined quality of life, and then support him in the right ways. Knowing each other's strengths is the key to success of a caregiving team.Shifting the approach to communication when it's not working, and listening to each other is vital to creating the best caregiving environment. Supporting your Person's decisions about care contributes to feelings of confidence and comfort. Patty and the team at The Conversation Project offer multiple resources for end of life conversations, offering resources for making end of life wishes known. My guest Gabby Jimenez and I are busting the hospice myths to get to the truth about end of life care. Because there are so many misconceptions about hospice care, many people don't choose to have care from a hospice team or they delay hospice care until very close to death. It's important to know the truth about all the aspects of hospice care - how medicines are managed, how morphine is really used for someone who's dying, when to start hospice, and Do Not Resuscitate orders work. Gabby Jimenez is a hospice nurse, end-of-life doula, death and dying educator, and author. Her website and Facebook page, which are both named The Hospice Heart, offer support for people who are either terminally ill, or caring for someone who is nearing the end of their life. Gabby has learned from being at the bedside of about 2,000 people who have taken their last breath. Her end-of-life doula training has helped her to truly understand the sacredness of death and dying, and what it means to be present for someone during that intimate and final moment. In an increasingly digital world, the gap between technology and its users often widens, particularly for seniors. Many individuals aged 75 and older may find themselves grappling with the complexities of modern devices and applications, leading to frustration and, in some cases, social isolation. However, innovative solutions like GrandPad are emerging to bridge this digital divide, offering user-friendly technology tailored specifically for seniors.Understanding the ChallengesThe challenges faced by seniors in using standard technology are multi-faceted. Random Vegas Before he designed Bellagio, Wynn had fully developed, different plans for the land formerly home to the Dunes. Plans were to build a boutique hotel with intimate spaces, 2 hotel towers, one with 230 suites and two 7-story towers housing 461 rooms each He even planned to leave room for two future towers to be built Wynn believe if he pulled this off, it would be the death of the mega resort Wynn's creative side was unsatisfied and after some guidance, scrapped them and started over with plans to reinvent the game again TwitPic of the week There was time when north strip was the center of the action in Las Vegas. Desert Inn, Frontier, Silver Slipper, Stardust, Silver City, Riviera, El Rancho, Slots A Fun, Circus Circus and the Sahara lorded over the area for decades. Today it's trying to resurrect its glory days with new additions Resorts World and Fontainebleau, but the location is currently a liability. This week we get a snapshot of the area as it existed in 1985 thanks to @_GrandPaD and comparing the density with today's landscape is almost an unfair comparison. Today large chunks of land exist in between properties making it unappealing to pedestrian traffic. Specifically, the area is challenged by the still vacant lots that are the Frontier and Riviera. The former a casualty of the real estate explosion the strip underwent in the early 2000s and the later another victim of the ever-growing reach of the Las Vegas Convention Center. Crystal ball time, will north strip ever be where the center of the action is again? It isn't likely even once people build on these parcels but that doesn't mean it can't become another hub of activity for the city that continues to evolve at all costs. Susan Combs will tell you she had a great dad. Her caregiving experience at the end of his life inspired her to give back to the veteran community. Susan's dad Major General Roger E. Combs was a huge influence on her life. Roger battled with throat cancer related to Agent Orange for ten years, eventually dealing with a feeding tube toward the end of his life. A simple act - his request to eat pancakes - launched a non-profit organization that supports military veterans. Susan is the president of Combs and Company, based in New York City. Her movement Pancakes for Roger occurs every February. For every pancake-loving picture posted on social media post using the hashtag #PancakesForRoger, Combs & Company will make a donation to the University of Missouri School of Law Veterans Clinic which helps veterans and their families navigate the VA claims process and secure disability benefits when they are faced with obstacles along the way. Here's some advice Susan gives to other end of life caregivers: Do one thing every day for yourself Bring in your “crew”, those friends who can support you Have the advance care plan conversations, even though it's difficult Connect with Susan Combs and Pancakes for Roger: Website: pancakesforroger.org Book: Pancakes for Roger Social media: Instagram Facebook Twitter (X) YouTube Honor your veteran on their Wall of Honor: Interested in purchasing a GrandPad to stay connected with a senior loved one? Allison Applebaum stood by her dad Stanley as his caregiving partner, respecting his wishes and maintaining his quality of life through the very end of his life. Allison was previously the Founding Director of the Caregivers Clinic at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, the first program of its kind in the United States to provide comprehensive psychosocial care to family members and friends of patients who are in the caregiving role. Her father Stanley, a talented and prolific composer and musician, worked with many great artists for the 50's and 60's, including Neil Sedaka, Ben E. King, and Connie Francis. Allison took a lead role as her dad's caregiver after the death of her mother, helping him deal with Lewy Body Disease (Lewy Body Dementia). After her mother died, Allison and Stan went forward, dealing with intense and traumatic grief. Allison's caregiving story is a beautiful tribute to her dad, and there are many caregivers across the U.S. doing the same job for someone they care about. LBD carries an unusual set of caregiving challenges. Stan defined quality of life as the ability to be creative, grow, and continue to compose his music. As a caregiver, Allison respected his wishes and ensured he lived fully until his death at 96. Some highlights from Allison's unique caregiving story include: Her dad retained his creativity and this contributed greatly to his quality of life Stan never had a DNR (Do Not Rescucitate) document, and Allison respected that wish through his death Intermittent hallucinations were part of his disease, a great source of pain for both Stan and his daughter. Cuddle Cots and Cuddle Blankets allow families to spend more time with a loved one after a death, providing an opportunity for end of life workers to do death care better. Danielle Franck of Flexmort shares her personal experience with a Cuddle Cot in this interview. *Warning - This episode contains a description of the loss of a stillborn infant. It may not be for all listeners. Please take care of yourself. Danielle is the Business Development Executive of the US at Flexmort, a company that designs and manufactures flexible mortuary solutions for the storage and cooling of a body after death occurs. She is passionate about fostering open discussions around death and loss. Danielle's personal story is a testimonial to the benefits of utilizing a Cuddle Cot. Cuddle Cots and Cuddle Blankets keep a body cool after death, enabling families to spend additional time with a loved one. That extra time creates space for meaningful goodbyes, rituals, and post mortem care that supports a healthy grieving process. The Cuddle Blankets are portable and can be used when a home funeral is planned. It's also a great tool to use when there's a plan for human composting or aquamation, and eliminates the need for dry ice when a family doesn't want embalming. A personal quilt or blanket can be placed on top of the Cuddle Blanket to create a personal touch. Serious illness and caregiving can be isolating. GrandPad's AI technology keeps seniors safely connected to loved ones. Isaac Lien and his dad Scott co-founded GrandPad to meet the needs they saw in Scott's mom. Their new AI app Grandie offers audio interaction for the user without requiring a certain format, and even learns the user's voice and way of speaking. Because GrandPad's network is private and encrypted, users can share photos or videos and make video calls without worrying about robocalls or spam. No one can be part of a user's network unless they're been invited by the family administrator. GrandPad makes a fantastic holiday gift for older adults, especially those living at a distance from family. Its features include: • phone calls • video calls • video sharing • internet browning • 911 emergency use • 4G LTE data plan Watch a webinar to hear more about GrandPad's features here. Hospice and palliative physician Dr. Matthew Tyler is teaching us how to have conversations with your healthcare team about what matters most to you. In addition to his work as medical director of palliative care services, Matthew educates the public about having meaningful discussions with their healthcare teams, especially the doctor. He calls it “How to Train Your Doctor”. People with serious illnesses, along with their decision-makers, can get better care if they know how to communicate their needs. Matthew tackles some of the trickiest topics with his How to Train Your Doctor social media posts. Feeding tubes, CPR/DNR decisions, confusing medical jargon, and palliative care are included in YouTube videos and Instagram posts. Matthew says it's important to determine what the patient considers a meaningful outcome, and what the goals of the patient care are. Being an advocate for someone in hospice care is a big job. MSW Jacob Kendall of Demystifying Healthcare is teaching us how to do it well. Advocacy for his own healthcare needs has taught him how to communicate with a healthcare team to get the best care possible. Jacob teaches about the various aspects that influence that care that's available for patients, including time and communication. He's also looking from a 30,000 foot view as well, acknowledging that geography, poverty, time, and policies influence the kind of care we receive. Jacob is a fan of interdisciplinary care. He believes every specialist or discipline should be working together to create more continuity in our healthcare. In addition to clinical providers, Jacob also thinks other modalities add value to our care. Connecting with other people experiencing similar health challenges can be valuable. Jacob brings a multidimensional perspective to his work as a healthcare consumer and an educator. Connect with Dr. Jacob Kendall, MSW MPH PhD at jacobevanskendall.com. As co-founder of Empowered Endings, Dr. Bob Uslander, is working to shift the paradigm of End of Life Care by supporting, guiding, and teaching an empowered approach to Palliative and End of Life Care. He became aware of the gaps in hospice and palliative care that cause patients to struggle. The deaths of his parents and a dear friend provided a personal perspective into caregiving that formed Bob's determination to meet the needs of people with serious illness in a better way. Empowered Endings supports both patients and families through the final stages of life. Random Vegas YESCO replaced more than six miles of neon lighting with RGB LED strips on Mandalay Bay and Delano (Vital Vegas). TwitPic of the week I was never a fan of the property, but damn did they have a nice marquee. The Frontier marquee, born in 1966 and shared by @_GrandPaD with an assist from @summacorp, was designed by Ad Art. It was at one time the tallest super pylon in the world at 184 feet, 4 feet taller than the previous record holder the Dunes. Originally the “F” at the top of the sign rotated but that functionality was troublesome and eventually abandoned. Unlike the Dunes I was fortunate enough to have seen her in real life and to be fair, pictures don't do it justice. Not like being in its presence. I'm grateful for that time and for this picture for inspiring not only this monologue but the memories. 360 Vegas Book Mirage-TI Tram closes E-500 YouTube Livestream Cosmopolitan Changes to MGM Neon City Festival

Lien shares the journey of testing and integrating AI technologies within their product, GrandPad, highlighting how a user-directed approach has fundamentally shaped both the development and marketing strategies. Isaac Lien, Co-founder of Grandpad, initially developed a math flashcards app for iPhone inspired by Steve Jobs. Motivated by communication challenges with his grandparents, he created Grandpad, facilitating video calls for the elderly. Recognizing the power of technology to improve lives, Grandpad later introduced "Grandie," which use AI to help seniors engage in seamless conversations, find inspiration, and discover new interests in an intuitive and user-friendly manner. The team focuses on effective communication and user engagement, incorporating popular games and news topics into Grandpad's offerings. Looking ahead, Isaac anticipates evolving generative AI technologies, and emphasizes the importance of user feedback to guide feature enhancements. By staying informed and exploring new tools, it's possible to capitalize on industry advancements. Key Takeaways: 1. User Feedback is King: User feedback plays a critical role in Grandpad's product development. They have a group of users who actively advise them on what to build, ensuring that the product continuously evolves to meet the needs of their customers. 2. Market Solutions, Not Features: Marketing for Grandpad's AI-powered features is centered around Simon Sinek's "Start with Why" approach. They focus on explaining why the product is important and beneficial for their users, before diving into the technical details of how it works. The solution is what users really care about. 3. Know Your Audience Intimately: Grandpad emphasized the importance of deeply understanding their target audience and creating a product that specifically caters to their needs. In their case, they focused on older adults and designed a user-friendly product that addresses their unique challenges with technology. ABOUT OUR GUEST: As the Co-Founder and Chief Artificial Intelligence and Innovation Officer at Grandpad, Isaac Lien brings a deep understanding of technology and a passion for making it accessible to older adults. With a background in computer science, he has been instrumental in the development of Grandpad's user-friendly tablet solutions designed specifically for the unique needs of this demographic. Isaac's expertise in artificial intelligence and his dedication to incorporating user feedback have been key drivers in Grandpad's success. He has consistently leveraged advanced technologies, such as generative AI, to enhance the user experience and provide personalized, human-like interactions. Through his leadership, Grandpad has become a pioneer in utilizing AI to create more intuitive and engaging experiences for its users. At the core of Isaac's work is a commitment to making technology accessible and inclusive for all users, particularly older adults. He has dedicated his career to developing solutions that empower and enrich the lives of users, ensuring they can seamlessly connect with their loved ones, access information, and enjoy a wide range of digital experiences. The Las Vegas Club, Golden Goose, Glitter Gulch and Sassy Sally, shared by @_GrandPaD, gone. Granted Sassy Sally was Mermaid's at the time of her demise but that's beside the point. The point is look how much things change in Vegas, all the time. On a side note, this is the best picture I've seen showing that Vegas Vickie and Sassy Sally are not the same thing. The typical POV shot of Sally's and this area makes it almost look like Vickie is sitting on top of the Sassy Sally sign, hence the misconception that Vickie used to be Sally. Random Vegas The Caesars Palace marquee has caught on fire twice. In both cases, Tom Jones was the featured artist on the billboard at the time (vintagelasvegas.com) Twitpic of the week Ever wonder what it looked like when your Grandparents were on vacation in Vegas. Well, thanks to @_GrandPaD, we can relive that moment poolside at the Stardust in the 1950s. How do I know it's the Stardust, you say? Easy, look at the top of the building. You can see the unmistakable outline of the original Stardust marquee, at least the back of it. Something about the idea of my grandparents chasing each other around like I chase my wife gives me an ear-to-ear grin, as it should. Random Vegas Allegiant Stadium generated $2.29 billion in economic impact to the city of Las Vegas including $128 million in tax revenue (@mickakers) Twitpic of the week Following last week's holiday theme, @_GrandpaD out did himself with a collection of various Vegas locations themed for the holidays. Everything from Stardust's Aku Aku tiki statue with a giant Santa hat on to more views of Fremont St with decorations strewn across the street. Our favorite this week was the view of Stardust's original marquee anchored with Christmas decorations, full sized which only further gives perspective to just how large the sign was in its day. As is common in Vegas signage, if you aren't paying attention, you might miss the decorations, although not in this photo. Random Vegas Fontainebleau isn't the first property to encounter financing problems causing the project to sit unfinished. That title goes to the Landmark who broke ground in 1961 but had to halt construction in 62 due to financing issues. So it sat, 80% done. During that time it was the tallest building in the state of Nevada. It sat dormant until 1969 when Howard Hughes bought it and finished building the property. The Landmark would eventually open July 1st, 1969 (Vintage Research) Twitpic of the week Festive isn't exactly how you would describe Christmas in Las Vegas. Not that the city doesn't try but the displays are usually in juxtaposition with existing signage and all easily overlooked if you aren't paying attention. A perfect example of this is this week's winner from @_GrandPaD showcasing Fremont St during the holidays, circa 1959. It isn't easy to see upon initial inspection because Vegas signs are designed to draw your attention to them. However, if you look past the marquees you'll seen garland strung across the street with some bells and whistles. Signage tangent, this picture shows Golden Nugget in a transitional period with the original signage still on display but with the addition of the steel framed roof sign, added in 1956. In just a few years, 1961, Kermit Wayne will add a giant bullnose shield on the corners with flanked animated signage on each side. This will come to be the properties most memorable incarnation of signage, aside from its current. GrandPad founders Scott and Isaac Lien recognize how important it is to make older senior adults feel confident and stay connected. Scott's 80-year old mom was easily frustrated by technology, sharing with him that she felt stupid trying to use online video chat and social media sites. The father and son team founded a company and created a device that provides a myriad of ways to support older adults. While the tech might be designed by 20-somethings, the designs of GrandPad are tested and approved by GrandPad's group of senior advisors. It's more than a product. Scott and Isaac foster a culture of empathy at Grandpad. Each staff member at GrandPad is required to have a GrandPad user in their lives, and to stay connected with them. The importance of relationships between different age groups is at the heart of their work. New features on the GrandPad include multiplayer games, health monitoring, and telehealth partnering with medical providers. One great new feature is the Moods app, which provides calming scenes and music to promote sleep and relaxation. A GrandPad subscription comes with its own 4G LTE, so the device doesn't need wifi. Random Vegas The original MGM Grand, now Bally's, had the first movie theaters ever built into a hotel (@vitalvegas) Twitpic of the week One of the challenges new residents of Vegas that love the city like we do have to learn how to drive, is paying attention while you're driving and not gawkin. This week's pic by @_GrandPaD illustrates that better than any I've seen before. It's just fuckin miles of eye candy and I have to try and ignore all of it. While I am a giant fan of the FSE and Turing all that space into a pedestrian mall, at night, it must have been impossible to drive down Fremont St.
Isaac Lien was a college student in California who wanted to stay in touch with his grandma in Iowa. When popular video conferencing programs proved too complicated for her, Isaac decided to develop his own simplified software tool. It worked. Issac's father Scott Lien immediately recognized the potential. Scott was a career corporate technologist who had worked for Target, Best Buy, and Bank of America before taking the leap to become a startup co-founder with his son. Together, they launched GrandPad as a platform that makes it easier for seniors to connect with families, friends and caregivers. Grandpad has reached 1.6 million in 120 countries so far. The company, based in Hopkins, Minn., employs 165 and has raised $31 million to scale its technology—both hardware and software, with human-centered around-the-clock customer service to back it up. The Liens talk about working with family, moving from mission to profitable company and why they believe helping people over 75—super seniors as they call them—with technology isn't a market soon to evaporate. Following our conversation with the Liens, we go Back to the Classroom with the University of St. Thomas Opus College of Business where Kjrk Reyerson teaches Health Innovation and says the GrandPad story is a testament to the importance of knowing your customer. "There are tons of great ideas, but do you have the right opportunity, the right focus and mindset. This story is about passion. Knowing you have to solve this obstacle for grandma, realizing no one has done this. Tech is the enabler to create that connection."
Random Vegas Treasure Island was originally planned to be an addition to the Mirage before eventually deciding it develop it into a separate property (sincitytalk.com) Twitpic of the week “Holy shit, that used to exist” is the first thing I exclaimed the first time I saw this picture of the Riviera's porte cochere, circa 1969. With stunning curves and swooping elegance, it stood as a shining example of the art deco playbook at its pinnacle and proves that buildings can be sexy as well as functional.
