Het prijsverschil met Duitsland en België loopt zo niet verder op. Ook de ANWB is blij met het besluit, omdat steeds meer Nederlands financieel in de knel komen door de hoge brandstofprijs. Other reports from the power utility company. With a solar power system, this rating was given to me by my electric utility: This week's cost of power. It's May so I'm having a lot of off-grid days.  Here are the number of power interruptions which didn't happen due to having battery backup:  Tesla App Screenshots The following are screenshots of a near real time dashboard about solar power generation, power wall storage, and grid usage which is provided by the Tesla Powerwall 2 controller. At this time of day it's 7PM so the sun is weak.  The following is what the dashboard looks like when a good amount of solar power is being generated. The house is demanding 1.4kWh and the sun is providing 5.5kWhs. So you see the Powerwalls are getting the surplus power routed to them so that when the sun goes down, I'll still be “off the grid” and using batteries for the early evening and sometimes for the whole night.  Sunrun Reports If you enjoyed this episode, you'll enjoy the following: Listen to this series with David Silvan about his various sustainable living projects which also includes PV Solar: The following were mentioned in the show: With Unbound Solar you can do various levels of DIY or just be your own general contractor: https://unboundsolar.com Will Prowse will walk you through his DIY projects in solar: https://www.youtube.com/@WillProwse

BMW plans for the i5 to be instrumental in their electric transition and expects 15% of total sales to come from EVs this year.  Ford is developing an electric three-row SUV likened to a 'personal bullet train', with a projected release in 2025. The Explorer-sized EV, which could boost the company's sales, promises an impressive 350-mile range.  Tata Motors, the owner of Jaguar Land Rover, is reportedly choosing the UK over Spain to build a large electric car battery plant. The plant, which could create up to 9,000 jobs, signifies a significant investment in the UK's automotive sector.  Tesla is strongly considering building its next gigafactory in England, potentially bringing a large number of jobs to the region. This may spark competition between countries eager to secure this investment.  BYD, China's largest new energy vehicle maker, contemplates building a passenger vehicle manufacturing plant in Europe. The automaker, also looking to expand into Southeast Asia, has been successful in Thailand with its bestselling electric vehicle, the Atto 3.  Italian EV charger company alpitronic Americas LLC plans to open its U.S. headquarters in North Carolina, contributing to the state's growing EV industry. The company anticipates creating 300 jobs by 2027 and investing more than $18.3 million in the region.  Skoda has unveiled the Enyaq L&K, a final addition to its electric SUV series, with an impressive system output of 210 kW. The model also includes an array of new software and design features, promising enhanced technical performance.  SAIC Group is working on solid-state battery cells, with the first production model expected in 2025. Partnering with startup QingTao Energy Development, SAIC aims for the safe large-scale application of these batteries.  A Munro Live video revealed concerns about the GMC Hummer EV battery's efficiency. The cost-intensive manufacturing process, including the battery cradle's assembly from 139 steel components and 3500 welds, could make it less competitive.  A US study by Recurrent suggests that EV batteries should last as long as the vehicle itself. It also found that battery replacement under warranty could be beneficial for owners, potentially contradicting concerns about battery lifespan.  France achieved its goal of 100,000 public EV charging stations, setting a new target of 400,000 by 2030. The country's push for EV infrastructure has sparked significant investment in local startups focusing on charging solutions.  BMW's 2024 lineup will feature the i4 xDrive40, an AWD model with an additional electric motor, promising quicker acceleration and 307 miles per charge. BMW's 7-series will also see new additions, including the i7 eDrive50 and a hybrid variant, the 750e.  Caterham plans to showcase two electric prototypes of its Seven sports car at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The company aims to be prepared for future legislation changes or parts availability issues that may necessitate an electric vehicle launch.  Tesla is extending its virtual power plant in South Australia to an additional 3,000 homes to aid low-income households. The solar arrays and Powerwalls supplied by Tesla are part of the company's larger plan to provide affordable residential electricity and grid services.  Solar car parks are gaining popularity as businesses aim to generate renewable energy on-site. The combination of energy production, car shade and shelter, as demonstrated in the UK, has potential for a massive increase in the deployment of solar car parks.  Octopus Energy's Electroverse has launched a product aimed at businesses, seeking to revolutionize the public EV charging experience. The platform includes a comprehensive dashboard with charging history and data access. Electroverse provides access to over 430,000 public charge points across 470 global brands.  Ample, a US-based startup, has unveiled its second-generation battery-swap station designs. The stations can swap a battery in just five minutes and can be set up in three days. The modular design caters to vehicles ranging from small cars to large trucks. Notably, Ample's technology is intended to work across manufacturers.  Helsinki Airport in Finland has opened a new parking hall equipped with nearly 350 charging stations for electric vehicles. The charging points are strategically located in the parking halls and are dedicated solely to charging vehicles.

This weekly show features conversations with people doing interesting work in the world of cloud, thoughtful commentary on the state of the technical world, and ridiculous titles for which Corey refuses to apologize. This is Screaming in the Cloud.Corey: This episode is bought to you in part by our friends at Veeam. Do you care about backups? Of course you don't. Nobody cares about backups. Stop lying to yourselves! You care about restores, usually right after you didn't care enough about backups.  If you're tired of the vulnerabilities, costs and slow recoveries when using snapshots to restore your data, assuming you even have them at all living in AWS-land, there is an alternative for you. Check out Veeam, thats V-E-E-A-M for secure, zero-fuss AWS backup that won't leave you high and dry when it's time to restore. Stop taking chances with your data. Talk to Veeam. My thanks to them for sponsoring this ridiculous podcast.Corey: This episode is brought to us by our friends at Pinecone. They believe that all anyone really wants is to be understood, and that includes your users. AI models combined with the Pinecone vector database let your applications understand and act on what your users want… without making them spell it out.Make your search application find results by meaning instead of just keywords, your personalization system make picks based on relevance instead of just tags, and your security applications match threats by resemblance instead of just regular expressions. Pinecone provides the cloud infrastructure that makes this easy, fast, and scalable. Thanks to my friends at Pinecone for sponsoring this episode. It's been a year, which means it's once again time to have a promoted guest episode brought to us by our friends at InfluxData. Joining me for a second time is Brian Mullen, CMO over at InfluxData. Brian, thank you for agreeing to do this a second time. You're braver than most.Brian: Thanks, Corey. I'm happy to be here. Second time is the charm.Corey: So, it's been an interesting year to put it mildly and I tend to have the attention span of a goldfish of most days, so for those who are similarly flighty, let's start at the very top. What is an InfluxDB slash InfluxData slash Influx—when you're not sure which one to use, just shorten it and call it good—and why might someone need it?Brian: Sure. So, InfluxDB is what most people understand our product as, a pretty popular open-source product, been out for quite a while. And then our company, InfluxData is the company behind InfluxDB. And InfluxDB is where developers build IoT real-time analytics and cloud applications, typically all based on time series. It's a time-series data platform specifically built to handle time-series data, which we think about is any type of data that is stamped in time in some way.It could be metrics, like, taken every one second, every two seconds, every three seconds, or some kind of event that occurs and is stamped in time in some way. So, our product and platform is really specialized to handle that technical problem.Corey: When last we spoke, I contextualized that in the realm of an IoT sensor that winds up reporting its device ID and its temperature at a given timestamp. That is sort of baseline stuff that I think aligns with what we're talking about. But over the past year, I started to see it in a bit of a different light, specifically viewing logs as time-series data, which hadn't occurred to me until relatively recently. And it makes perfect sense, on some level. It's weird to contextualize what Influx does as being a logging database, but there's absolutely no reason it couldn't be.Brian: Yeah, it certainly could. So typically, we see the world of time-series data in kind of two big realms. One is, as you mentioned the, you know, think of it as the hardware or, you know, physical realm: devices and sensors, these are things that are going to show up in a connected car, in a factory deployment, in renewable energy, you know, wind farm. And those are real devices and pieces of hardware that are out in the physical world, collecting data and emitting, you know, time-series every one second, or five seconds, or ten minutes, or whatever it might be.But it also, as you mentioned, applies to, call it the virtual world, which is really all of the software and infrastructure that is being stood up to run applications and services. And so, in that world, it could be the same—it's just a different type of source, but is really kind of the same technical problem. It's still time-series data being stamped, you know, data being stamped every, you know, one second, every five seconds, in some cases, every millisecond, but it is coming from a source that is actually in the infrastructure. Could be, you know, virtual machines, it could be containers, it could be microservices running within those containers. And so, all of those things together, both in the physical world and this infrastructure world are all emitting time-series data.Corey: When you take a look at the broader ecosystem, what is it that you see that has been the most misunderstood about time-series data as a whole? For example, when I saw AWS talking about a lot of things that they did in the realm of for your data lake, I talked to clients of mine about this and their response is, “Well, that'd be great genius, if we had a data lake.” It's, “What do you think those petabytes of nonsense in S3 are?” “Oh, those are the logs and the assets and a bunch of other nonsense.” “Yeah, that's what other people are calling a data lake.” “Oh.” Do you see similar lights-go-on moment when you talk to clients and prospective clients about what it is that they're doing that they just hadn't considered to be time-series data previously?Brian: Yeah. In fact, that's exactly what we see with many of our customers is they didn't realize that all of a sudden, they are now handling a pretty sizable time-series workload. And if you kind of take a step back and look at a couple of pretty obvious but sometimes unrecognized trends in technology, the first is cloud applications in general are expanding, they're both—horizontally and vertically. So, that means, like, the workloads that are being run in the Netflix's of the world, or all the different infrastructure that's being spun up in the cloud to run these various, you know, applications and services, those workloads are getting bigger and bigger, those companies and their subscriber bases, and the amount of data they're generating is getting bigger and bigger. They're also expanding horizontally by region and geography. So Netflix, for example, running not just in the US, but in every continent and probably every cloud region around the world. So, that's happening in the cloud world, and then also, in the IoT world, there's this massive growth of connected devices, both net-new devices that are being developed kind of, you know, the next Peloton or the next climate control unit that goes in an apartment or house, and also these longtime legacy devices that are been on the factory floor for a couple of decades, but now are being kind of modernized and coming online. So, if you look at all of that growth of the data sources now being built up in the cloud and you look at all that growth of these connected devices, both new and existing, that are kind of coming online, there's a huge now exponential growth in the sources of data. And all of these sources are emitting time-series data. You can just think about a connected car—not even a self-driving car, just a connected car, your everyday, kind of, 2022 model, and nearly every element of the car is emitting time-series data: its engine components, you know, your tires, like, what the climate inside of the car is, statuses of the engine itself, and it's all doing that in real-time, so every one second, every five seconds, whatever. So, I think in general, people just don't realize they're already dealing with a substantial workload of time series. And in most cases, unless they're using something like Influx, they're probably not, you know, especially tuned to handle it from a technology perspective.Corey: So, it's been a year. What has changed over on your side of the world since the last time we spoke? It seems that well, things continue and they're up and to the right. Well, sure, generally speaking, you're clearly still in business. Good job, always appreciative of your custom, as well as the fact that oh, good, even in a world where it seems like there's a macro recession in progress, that there are still companies out there that continue to persist and in some cases, dare I say, even thrive? What have you folks been up to?Brian: Yeah, it's been a big year. So first, we've seen quite a bit of expansion across the use cases. So, we've seen even further expansion in IoT, kind of expanding into consumer, industrial, and now sustainability and clean energy, and that pairs with what we've seen on FinTech and cryptocurrency, gaming and entertainment applications, network telemetry, including some of the biggest names in telecom, and then a little bit more on the cloud side with cloud services, infrastructure, and dev tools and APIs. So, quite a bit more broad set of use cases we're now seeing across the platform. And the second thing is—you might have seen it in the last month or so—is a pretty big announcement we had of our new storage engine. So, this was just announced earlier this month in November and was previously introduced to our community as what we call an IOx, which is how it was known in the open-source. And think of this really as a rebuilt and reimagined storage engine which is built on that open-source project, InfluxDB IOx that allows us to deliver faster queries, and now—pretty exciting for the first time—unlimited time-series, or cardinality as it's known in the space. And then also we introduced SQL for writing queries and BI tool support. And this is, for the first time we're introducing SQL, which is world's most popular data programming language to our platform, enabling developers to query via the API our language Flux, and InfluxQL in addition.Corey: A long time ago, it really seems that the cloud took a vote, for lack of a better term, and decided that when it comes to storage, object store is the way forward. It was a bit of a reimagining from how we all considered using storage previously, but the economics are at minimum of ten to one in favor of objects store, the latency is far better, the durability is off the charts better, you don't have to deal—at least in AWS-land—with the concept of availability zones and the rest, just from an economic and performance perspective, provided the use case embraces it, there's really no substitute.Brian: Yeah, I mean, the way we think about storage is, you know, obviously, it varies quite a bit from customer to customer with our use cases. Especially in IoT, we see some use cases where customers want to have data around for months and in some cases, years. So, it's a pretty substantial data set you're often looking at. And sometimes those customers want to downsample those, they don't necessarily need every single piece of minutia that they may need in real-time, but not in summary, looking backward. So, you really—we're in this kind of world where we're dealing with both hive fidelity—usually in the moment—data and lower fidelity, when people can downsample and have a little bit more of a summarized view of what happened. So, pretty unique for us and we have to kind of design the product in a way that is able to balance both of those because that's what, you know, the customer use cases demand. It's a super hard problem to solve. One of the reasons that you have a product like InfluxDB, which is specialized to handle this kind of thing, is so that you can actually manage that balance in your application service and setting your retention policy, et cetera.Corey: That's always been something that seemed a little on the odd side to me when I'm looking at a variety of different observability tools, where it seems that one of the key dimensions that they all tend to, I guess, operate on and price on is retention period. And I get it; you might not necessarily want to have your load balancer logs from 2012 readily available and paying for the privilege, but it does seem that given the dramatic fall of archival storage pricing, on some level, people do want to be able to retain that data just on the off chance that will be useful. Maybe that's my internal digital packrat chiming in at this point, but I do believe strongly that there is a correlation between how recent the data is and how useful it is, for a variety of different use cases. But that's also not a global truth. How do you view the divide? And what do you actually see people saying they want versus what they're actually using?Brian: It's a really good question and not a simple problem to solve. So, first of all, I would say it probably really depends on the use case and the extent to which that use case is touching real world applications and services. So, in a pure observability setting where you're looking at, perhaps more of a, kind of, operational view of infrastructure monitoring, you want to understand kind of what happened and when those tend to be a little bit more focused on real-time and recent. So, for example, you of course, want to know exactly what's happening in the moment, zero in on whatever anomaly and kind of surrounding data there is, perhaps that means you're digging into something that happened in you know, fairly recent time. So, those do tend to be, not all of them, but they do tend to be a little bit more real-time and recent-oriented.I think it's a little bit different when we look at IoT. Those generally tend to be longer timeframes that people are dealing with. Their physical out-in-the-field devices, you know, many times those devices are kind of coming online and offline, depending on the connectivity, depending on the environment, you can imagine a connected smart agriculture setup, I mean, those are a pretty wide array of devices out and in, you know, who knows what kind of climate and environment, so they tend to be a little bit longer in retention policy, kind of, being able to dig into the data, what's happening. The time frame that people are dealing with is just, in general, much longer in some of those situations.Corey: One story that I've heard a fair bit about observability data and event data is that they inevitably compose down into metrics rather than events or traces or logs, and I have a hard time getting there because I can definitely see a bunch of log entries showing the web servers return codes, okay, here's the number of 500 errors and number of different types of successes that we wind up seeing in the app. Yeah, all right, how many per minute, per second, per hour, whatever it is that makes sense that you can look at aberrations there. But in the development process at least, I find that having detailed log messages tell me about things I didn't see and need to understand or to continue building the dumb thing that I'm in the process of putting out. It feels like once something is productionalized and running, that its behavior is a lot more well understood, and at that point, metrics really seem to take over. How do you see it, given that you fundamentally live at that intersection where one can become the other?Brian: Yeah, we are right at that intersection and our answer probably would be both. Metrics are super important to understand and have that regular cadence and be kind of measuring that state over time, but you can miss things depending on how frequent those metrics are coming in. And increasingly, when you have the amount of data that you're dealing with coming from these various sources, the measurement is getting smaller and smaller. So, unless you have, you know, perfect metrics coming in every half-second, or you know, in some sub-partition of that, in milliseconds, you're likely to miss something. And so, events are really key to understand those things that pop up and then maybe come back down and in a pure metric setting, in your regular interval, you would have just completely missed. So, we see most of our use cases that are showing a balance of the two is kind of the most effective. And from a product perspective, that's how we think about solving the problem, addressing both.Corey: One of the things that I struggled with is it seems that—again, my approach to this is relatively outmoded. I was a systems administrator back when that title was not considered disparaging by a good portion of the technical community the way that it is today. Even though the job is the same, we call them something different now. Great. Okay, whatever smile, nod, and accept the larger paycheck. But my way of thinking about things are okay, you have the logs, they live on the server itself. And maybe if you want to be fancy, you wind up putting them to a centralized rsyslog cluster or whatnot. Yes, you might send them as well to some other processing system for visibility or a third-party monitoring system, but the canonical truth slash source of logs tends to live locally. That said, I got out of running production infrastructure before this idea of ephemeral containers or serverless functions really became a thing. Do you find that these days you are the source of truth slash custodian of record for these log entries, or do you find that you are more of a secondary source for better visibility and analysis, but not what they're going to bust out when the auditor comes calling in three years?Brian: I think, again, it—[laugh] I feel like I'm answering the same way [crosstalk 00:15:53]Corey: Yeah, oh, and of course, let's be clear, use cases are going to vary wildly. This is not advice on anyone's approach to compliance and the rest [laugh]. I don't want to get myself in trouble here.Brian: Exactly. Well, you know, we kind of think about it in terms of profiles. And we see a couple of different profiles of customers using InfluxDB. So, the first is, and this was kind of what we saw most often early on, still see quite a bit of them is kind of more of that operator profile. And these are folks who are going to—they're building some sort of monitor, kind of, source of truth for—that's internally facing to monitor applications or services, perhaps that other teams within their company built. And so that's, kind of like, a little bit more of your kind of pure operator. Yes, they're building up in the stack themselves, but it's to pay attention to essentially something that another team built. And then what we've seen more recently, especially as we've moved more prominently into the cloud and offered a usage-based service with a, you know, APIs and endpoint people can hit, as we see more people come into it from a builder's perspective. And similar in some ways, except that they're still building kind of a, you know, a source of truth for handling this kind of data. But they're also building the applications and services themselves are taken out to market that are in the hands of customers. And so, it's a little bit different mindset. Typically, there's, you know, a little bit more comfort with using one of many services to kind of, you know, be part of the thing that they're building. And so, we've seen a little bit more comfort from that type of profile, using our service running in the cloud, using the API, and not worrying too much about the kind of, you know, underlying setup of the implementation.Corey: Love how serverless helps you scale big and ship fast, but hate debugging your serverless apps? With Lumigo's serverless observability, it's fast and easy (and maybe a little fun, too). End-to-end distributed tracing gives developers full clarity into their most complex serverless and containerized applications, connecting every service from AWS Lambda and Amazon ECS to DynamoDB, API Gateways, Step Functions and more. Try Lumigo free and debug 3x faster, reduce error rate and speed up development. Visit snark.cloud/lumigo That's snark.cloud/L-U-M-I-G-OCorey: So, I've been on record a lot saying that the best database is TXT records stuffed into Route 53, which works super well as a gag, let's be clear, don't actually build something on top of this, that's a disaster waiting to happen. I don't want to destroy anyone's career as I do this. But you do have a much more viable competitive threat on the landscape. And that is quite simply using the open-source version of InfluxDB. What is the tipping point where, “Huh, I can run this myself,” turns into, “But I shouldn't. I should instead give money to other people to run it for me.”Because having been an engineer, where I believe I'm the world's greatest everything, when it comes to my environment—a fact provably untrue, but that hubris never quite goes away entirely—at what point am I basically being negligent not to start dealing with you in a more formalized business context?Brian: First of all, let me say that we have many customers, many developers out there who are running open-source and it works perfectly for them. The workload is just right, the deployment makes sense. And so, there are many production workloads we're using open-source. But typically, the kind of big turning point for people is on scale, scale, and overall performance related to that. And so, that's typically when they come and look at one of the two commercial offers. So, to start, open-source is a great place to, you know, kind of begin the journey, check it out, do that level of experimentation and kind of proof of concept. We also have 60,000-plus developers using our introductory cloud service, which is a free service. You simply sign up and can begin immediately putting data into the platform and building queries, and you don't have to worry about any of the setup and running servers to deploy software. So, both of those, the open-source and our cloud product are excellent ways to get started. And then when it comes time to really think about building in production and moving up in scale, we have our two commercial offers. And the first of those is InfluxDB Cloud, which is our cloud-native fully managed by InfluxData offering. We run this not only in AWS but also in Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure. It's a usage-based service, which means you pay exactly for what you use, and the three components that people pay for our data in, number of queries, and the amount of data you store in storage. We also for those who are interested in actually managing it themselves, we have InfluxDB Enterprise, which is a software subscription-base model, and it is self-managed by the customer in their environment. Now, that environment could be their own private cloud, it also could be on-premises in their own data center. And so, lots of fun people who are a little bit more oriented to kind of manage software themselves rather than using a service gear toward that. But both those commercial offers InfluxDB Cloud and InfluxDB Enterprise are really designed for, you know, massive scale. In the case of Cloud, I mentioned earlier with the new storage engine, you can hit unlimited cardinality, which means you have no limit on the number of time series you can put into the platform, which is a pretty big game-changing concept. And so, that means however many time-series sources you have and however many series they're emitting, you can run that without a problem without any sort of upper limit in our cloud product. Over on the enterprise side with our self-managed product, that means you can deploy a cluster of whatever size you want. It could be a two-by-four, it could be a four-by-eight, or something even larger. And so, it gives people that are managing in their own private cloud or in a data center environment, really their own options to kind of construct exactly what they need for their particular use case.Corey: Does your object storage layer make it easier to dynamically change clusters on the fly? I mean, historically, running things in a pre-provisioned cluster with EBS volumes or local disk was, “Oh, great. You want to resize something? Well, we're going to be either taking an outage or we're going to be building up something, migrating data live, and there's going to be a knife-switch cutover at some point that makes things relatively unfortunate.” It seems that once you abstract the storage layer away from anything resembling an instance that you would be able to get away from some of those architectural constraints.Brian: Yeah, that's really the promise, and what is delivered in our cloud product is that you no longer, as a developer, have to think about that if you're using that product. You don't have to think about how big the cluster is going to be, you don't have to think about these kind of disaster scenarios. It is all kind of pre-architected in the service. And so, the things that we really want to deliver to people, in addition to the elimination of that concern for what the underlying infrastructure looks like and how its operating. And so, with infrastructure concerns kind of out of the way, what we want to deliver on are kind of the things that people care most about: real-time query speed. So, now with this new storage engine, you can query data across any time series within milliseconds, 100 times faster queries against high cardinality data that was previously impossible. And we also have unlimited time-series volume. Again, any total number of time series you have, which is known as cardinality, is now able to run without a problem in the platform. And then we also have kind of opening up, we're opening up the aperture a bit for developers with SQL language support. And so, this is just a whole new world of flexibility for developers to begin building on the platform. And again, this is all in the way that people are using the product without having to worry about the underlying infrastructure.Corey: For most companies—and this does not apply to you—their core competency is not running time-series databases and the infrastructure attendant thereof, so it seems like it is absolutely a great candidate for, “You know, we really could make this someone else's problem and let us instead focus on the differentiated thing that we are doing or building or complaining about.”Brian: Yeah, that's a true statement. Typically what happens with time-series data is that people first of all, don't realize they have it, and then when they realize they have time-series data, you know, the first thing they'll do is look around and say, “Well, what do I have here?” You know, I have this relational database over here or this document database over here, maybe even this, kind of, search database over here, maybe that thing can handle time series. And in a light manner, it probably does the job. But like I said, the sources of data and just the volume of time series is expanding, really across all these different use cases, exponentially. And so, pretty quickly, people realize that thing that may be able to handle time series in some minor manner, is quickly no longer able to do it. They're just not purpose-built for it. And so, that's where really they come to a product like Influx to really handle this specific problem. We're built specifically for this purpose and so as the time-series workload expands when it kind of hits that tipping point, you really need a specialized tool.Corey: Last question, before I turn you loose to prepare for re:Invent, of course—well, I guess we'll ask you a little bit about that afterwards, but first, we can talk a lot theoretically about what your product could or might theoretically do. What are you actually seeing? What are the use cases that other than the stereotypical ones we've talked about, what have you seen people using it for that surprised you?Brian: Yeah, some of it is—it's just really interesting how it connects to, you know, things you see every day and/or use every day. I mean, chances are, many people listening have probably use InfluxDB and, you know, perhaps didn't know it. You know, if anyone has been to a home that has Tesla Powerwalls—Tesla is a customer of ours—then they've seen InfluxDB in action. Tesla's pulling time-series data from these connected Powerwalls that are in solar-powered homes, and they monitor things like health and availability and performance of those solar panels and the battery setup, et cetera. And they're collecting this at the edge and then sending that back into the hub where InfluxDB is running on their back end.So, if you've ever seen this deployed like that's InfluxDB running behind the scenes. Same goes, I'm sure many people have a Nest thermostat in their house. Nest monitors the infrastructure, actually the powers that collection of IoT data collection. So, you think of this as InfluxDB running behind the scenes to monitor what infrastructure is standing up that back-end Nest service. And this includes their use of Kubernetes and other software infrastructure that's run in their platform for collection, managing, transforming, and analyzing all of this aggregate device data that's out there.Another one, especially for those of us that streamed our minds out during the pandemic, Disney+ entertainment, streaming, and delivery of that to applications and to devices in the home. And so, you know, this hugely popular Disney+ streaming service is essentially a global content delivery network for distributing all these, you know, movies and video series to all the users worldwide. And they monitor the movement and performance of that video content through this global CDN using InfluxDB. So, those are a few where you probably walk by something like this multiple times a week, or in our case of Disney+ probably watching it once a day. And it's great to see InfluxDB kind of working behind the scenes there.Corey: It's one of those things where it's, I guess we'll call it plumbing, for lack of a better term. It's not the sort of thing that people are going to put front-and-center into any product or service that they wind up providing, you know, except for you folks. Instead, it's the thing that empowers a capability behind that product or service that is often taken for granted, just because until you understand the dizzying complexity, particularly at scale, of what these things have to do under the hood, it just—well yeah, of course, it works that way. Why shouldn't it? That's an expectation I have of the product because it's always had that. Yeah, but this is how it gets there.Brian: Our thesis really is that data is best understood through the lens of time. And as this data is expanding exponentially, time becomes increasingly the, kind of, common element, the common component that you're using to kind of view what happened. That could be what's running through a telecom network, what's happening with the devices that are connected that network, the movement of data through that network, and when, what's happening with subscribers and content pushing through a CDN on a streaming service, what's happening with climate and home data in hundreds of thousands, if not millions of homes through common device like a Nest thermostat. All of these things they attach to some real-world collection of data, and as long as that's happening, there's going to be a place for time-series data and tools that are optimized to handle it.Corey: So, my last question—for real this time—we are recording this the week before re:Invent 2022. What do you hope to see, what do you expect to see, what do you fear to see?Brian: No fears. Even though it's Vegas, no fears.Corey: I do have the super-spreader event fear, but that's a separate—Brian: [laugh].Corey: That's a separate issue. Neither one of us are deep into the epidemiology weeds, to my understanding. But yeah, let's just bound this to tech, let's be clear.Brian: Yeah, so first of all, we're really excited to go there. We'll have a pretty big presence. We have a few different locations where you can meet us. We'll have a booth on the main show floor, we'll be in the marketplace pavilion, as I mentioned, InfluxDB Cloud is offered across the marketplaces of each of the clouds, AWS, obviously in this case, but also in Azure and Google. But we'll be there in the AWS Marketplace pavilion, showcasing the new engine and a lot of the pretty exciting new use cases that we've been seeing. And we'll have our full team there, so if you're looking to kind of learn more about InfluxDB, or you've checked it out recently and want to understand kind of what the new capability is, we'll have many folks from our technical teams there, from our development team, some our field folks like the SEs and some of the product managers will be there as well. So, we'll have a pretty great collection of experts on InfluxDB to answer any questions and walk people through, you know, demonstrations and use cases.Corey: I look forward to it. I will be doing my traditional Wednesday afternoon tour through the expo halls and nature walk, so if you're listening to this and it's before Wednesday afternoon, come and find me. I am kicking off and ending at the [unintelligible 00:29:15] booth, but I will make it a point to come by the Influx booth and give you folks a hard time because that's what I do.Brian: We love it. Please. You know, being on the tour is—on the walking tour is excellent. We'll be mentally prepared. We'll have some comebacks ready for you.Corey: Therapists are standing by on both sides.Brian: Yes, exactly. Anyway, we're really looking forward to it. This will be my third year on your walking tour. So, the nature walk is one of my favorite parts of AWS re:Invent.Corey: Well, I appreciate that. Thank you. And thank you for your time today. I will let you get back to your no doubt frenzied preparations. At least they are on my side.Brian: We will. NEWS: Sugar-studded protein is key to an Alzheimer's cure | The Brighter Side (01:38) In a bit of “reverse engineering” research using brain tissues from five people who died with Alzheimer's disease, Johns Hopkins Medicine researchers say they discovered that a special sugar molecule could play a key role in the development of Alzheimer's disease. This could indicate the molecule, known as a glycan, to be used as an early diagnostic test. And opens a way to perhaps prevention of the disease Cleaning up the disease-causing forms of amyloid and tau is the job of the brain's immune cells, called microglia. Earlier studies found that when cleanup is impaired, Alzheimer's disease is more likely to occur.  Thought to be caused by an overabundance of a receptor on the microglia cells, called CD33. Past studies by the researchers showed that for CD33, these “connector” molecules are special sugars. These molecules are ferried around the cell by specialized proteins that help them find their appropriate receptors.  The protein-glycan combination is called a glycoprotein.  The researchers, to find out more about the glycoproteins, obtained brain tissue from five people who died of Alzheimer's disease and from five people.Among the many thousands of glycoproteins they gathered from the brain tissues, only one connected to CD33. What was this mysterious glycoprotein? The researchers determined the protein component's identity by taking its “fingerprint” using mass spectroscopy, which identifies protein building blocks. Then they compared the molecular makeup of the protein with a database of known protein structures. The research team was able to conclude the protein portion of the glycoprotein was receptor tyrosine phosphatase (RPTP) zeta. Further experiments showed that the brain tissue of the five people who died with Alzheimer's disease had more than twice as much RPTP zeta S3L as the donors who did not have the disease. Implying that this glycoprotein may be connecting with more CD33 receptors than a healthy brain, limiting the brain's ability to clean up harmful proteins. Gonzalez-Gil Alvarenga, Ph.D., first author on the study stated:“Identifying this unique glycoprotein provides a step toward finding new drug targets and potentially early diagnostics for Alzheimer's disease.”   A Surprising Link Between Immune System and Hair Growth | Neuroscience News (07:36) Salk scientists have uncovered an unexpected molecular target of a common treatment for alopecia, a condition in which a person's immune system attacks their own hair follicles, causing hair loss. Corresponding author of the study, Ye Zheng, associate professor in Salk's NOMIS Center for Immunobiology and Microbial Pathogenesis, stated:“For the longest time, regulatory T cells have been studied for how they decrease excessive immune reactions in autoimmune diseases … Now we've identified the upstream hormonal signal and downstream growth factor that actually promote hair growth and regeneration completely separate from suppressing immune response.” Initially the researchers were interested in researching the roles of regulatory T cells and glucocorticoid hormones in autoimmune diseases. They did not function together to play a significant role in any of these conditions.  Thought they'd have more luck looking at environments where regulatory T cells expressed particularly high levels of glucocorticoid receptors The glucocorticoid receptor (GR, or GCR) also known as NR3C1 (nuclear receptor subfamily 3, group C, member 1) is the receptor to which cortisol and other glucocorticoids bind. The scientists induced hair loss in normal mice and mice lacking glucocorticoid receptors in their regulatory T cells. After two weeks, the researchers saw the normal mice grew their hair back, while the ones lacking the receptors struggled to grow it back The findings suggested that some sort of communication must be occurring between regulatory T cells and hair follicle stem cells to allow for hair regeneration. They continued to investigate how the regulatory T cells and glucocorticoid receptors behaved in skin tissue samples. They found that glucocorticoids instruct the regulatory T cells to activate hair follicle stem cells, which leads to hair growth. Depends on a mechanism whereby glucocorticoid receptors induce production of the protein TGF-beta3, all within the regulatory T cells. TGF-beta3 then activates the hair follicle stem cells to differentiate into new hair follicles, promoting hair growth.  This study revealed that regulatory T cells and glucocorticoid hormones are not just immunosuppressants but also have a regenerative function. Next, the scientists will look at other injury models and isolate regulatory T cells from injured tissues to monitor increased levels of TGF-beta3 and other growth factors.     Engineers devise clever system for EVs to share charge—while driving | Anthropocene (13:34) The charging station expansion isn't keeping up with the growing number of EVs on the road. The number of EVs on the road per public charging point globally rose to 9.2 at the end of last year, from 7.4 at the end of 2020, according to a study by BloombergNEF analyst Ryan Fisher on the state of public charging infrastructure. In a new study, engineers propose a way around this conundrum: EVs that share charge with each other while driving. In their vision, cars with low batteries could buy some charge from others with extra to spare, all without stopping. Could be orchestrated via a cloud-based control system Electrical and computer engineer Prabuddha Chakraborty the University of Florida and his colleagues propose a two-battery system for EVs.A large, slow-charging lithium-ion battery would drive the car,  A smaller, fast-charging battery would be used for on-the-go charging.  Once powered up, the small battery would transfer its charge to the car's main battery.  “Just like in your computer you have fast cache memory—but it's expensive—so you have other type of high-capacity memories that are slower,” said Tamzidul Hoque, a professor of electrical engineering and computer science at the University of Kansas The cloud-based system idea:Monitor charge levels of electric cars.  If a car's power is starting to run low, the network would alert it to other cars nearby with enough charge to sell.  Once two cars are matched with owner consent, cables would connect them for charging and they would be locked at the same speed until the power transfer is complete. Yet even in a well-planned, dynamic peer charging network, the researchers found in simulations that the total charge of the network will slowly deplete. To try to get around this idea, they propose the concept of mobile charging stations: large battery-loaded trucks that would recharge multiple vehicles at once.  Like military jets being refueled in-flight by tanker aircraft.  Using popular traffic modeling software they were able to simulate their idea somewhat. They found that it would eliminate range anxiety and re-charging wait time, and reduce EV cost by eliminating the need to have big batteries.   Scientists Use Vegetable Oil Byproduct to Remove Heavy Metals From Contaminated Water | EcoWatch (20:27) Scientists from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, collaborating with ETH Zurich, Switzerland (ETHZ), have discovered a way to turn byproduct from vegetable oil production into a membrane that filters out heavy metals from water. Ali Miserez, study author and professor at Nanyang Technological University, stated:“Water pollution remains a major global issue in many parts of the world…Heavy metals represent a large group of water pollutants that can accumulate in the human body, causing cancer and mutagenic diseases. Current technologies to remove them are energy-intensive, requiring power to operate, or are highly selective in what they filter.” The researchers noticed that proteins in peanut and sunflower oil waste byproducts, called oilseed meals, were useful in attracting heavy metal ions.Turned the oilseed meals' proteins into nano-sized protein amyloid fibrils, which strongly attract heavy metal ions.  Combined these amyloid fibrils with activated carbon and tested the filters on three types of metal: platinum, chromium and lead. The membranes were 99.89% effective at filtering out all of the heavy metals from water, with the best results for platinum and lead. The membrane made from waste byproduct proteins is a low-cost option that requires little energy for decontamination, and the researchers say this innovation could work all over the world for water purification.  “Recovering precious platinum, which costs US$33,000/kg, only requires 32 kg of protein, while recovering gold, which is worth almost US$60,000/kg, only requires 16 kg of protein. Considering that these proteins are obtained from industrial waste that is worth less than US$1/kg, there are large cost benefits,” Miserez explained. Because of the simple technology, this filtration membrane is readily scalable, according to the researchers.   Tesla launches new virtual power plant that pays Powerwall owners to help end brownouts | Electrek (25:30) Tesla has launched a new virtual power plant in partnership with PG&E in California that will pay Powerwalls owners to help stabilize the electric grid and end brownouts in California. What is a virtual power plant?Consists of distributed energy storage systems, like Tesla Powerwalls, used in concert to provide grid services and avoid the use of polluting and expensive peaker power plants. Tesla has partnered with PG&E to launch a new version of its virtual power plant that will actually compensate people participating:The company's statement: “Become a part of the largest distributed battery in the world and help keep California's energy clean and reliable. Opt-in to the Tesla Virtual Power Plant (VPP) with PG&E and your Powerwall will be dispatched when the grid needs emergency support. Through the Emergency Load Reduction Program (ELRP) pilot, you will receive $2 for every additional kWh your Powerwall delivers during an event. Adjust your Backup Reserve to set your contribution, while maintaining backup energy for outages.” Depending on the events and the number of Powerwalls homeowners have, they could earn anywhere from $10 to $60 per event or even more for bigger systems. The extra capacity your Powerwall provides could help avoid or reduce blackouts in a severe emergency. This way, Powerwall can keep the lights on for both you and your community. Tesla said that it has about 50,000 Powerwalls that could be eligible for this VPP, which add up to a significant 500 MWh of energy capacity than can be distributed in any event.

But Q2 suggested Tesla won't need to rely on ZEV credits much longer, with the unexpectedly strong earnings coming almost entirely from retail sales of its EVs.   Original Source : https://www.nbcnews.com/business/autos/tesla-reports-1-billion-profit-sales-almost-doubling-last-quarter-n1275071   TESLA COMES OF AGE AT JUST THE RIGHT TIME   - Its pre-tax margin of almost 11% also finally rivals leaders like Toyota Motor (7203.T) and General Motors (GM.N). With the industry in upheaval, Tesla's coming of age has come at just the right time.   - While Tesla raked in $354 million of revenue in the second quarter from selling environmental credits to gas-guzzler producers like Stellantis (STLA.MI), strip that out, and its pre-tax margin was still healthy at just shy of 9%.   - Overall expenses rose almost 9% while revenue jumped around 14% from the first quarter.   Original Source : https://www.reuters.com/breakingviews/tesla-comes-age-just-right-time-2021-07-26/   Tesla (TSLA) earnings Q2 2021   - Overall automotive revenue came in at $10.21 billion, of which only $354 million, about 3.5%, came from sales of regulatory credits. That's a lower number for credits than in any of the previous four quarters. Automotive gross margins were 28.4%, higher than in any of the last four quarters.   - The company also reported $801 million in revenue from its energy business, including solar photovoltaics and energy storage systems for homes, businesses and utilities, an increase of more than 60% from last quarter.   - Tesla also reported $951 million in services and other revenues. The company now operates 598 stores and service centers, and a mobile service fleet including 1,091 vehicles, an increase of just 34% versus a year ago.   Original Source : https://www.cnbc.com/2021/07/26/tesla-tsla-earnings-q2-2021.html   TESLA'S $11.958 BILLION REVENUE   - The company noted that this profit level was reached while incurring SBC expense attributable to the 2018 CEO award of $176 million in Q2   - Tesla's quarter-end cash and cash equivalents decreased to $16.2 billion in Q2. This was mostly due to net debt and finance lease repayments of $1.6 billion   Original Source : https://cleantechnica.com/2021/07/26/teslas-11-958-billion-in-revenue-is-accelerating-our-transition-to-sustainability/   TESLA'S SOLAR AND ENERGY STORAGE BUSINESS RAKES IN $810M - the cost of revenue for its solar and energy storage business was $781 million, meaning that for the first time the total cost of producing and distributing these energy storage products was lower than the revenue it generated. That's good news.   - Tesla installed 1,274 megawatt-hours of energy storage in the second quarter of 2021, a 205% increase from the same period last year. Similarly, the amount of solar energy deployed in the second quarter of this year was 85 MWh, up 214% from Q2 2020.   - Tesla points to several Megapack projects coming online and growing popularity in its combined solar and Powerwall product.   - one Megapack is about $1.2 million before taxes. In some states, Tesla says the earliest deliveries will be in 2023.   Original Source : https://techcrunch.com/2021/07/26/teslas-solar-and-energy-storage-business-rakes-in-810m-finally-exceeds-cost-of-revenue       HIGHLIGHTS FROM EARNINGS CALL 1 The global chip shortage situation remains quite serious   2 FSD subscription, we were able to launch Full Self-Driving subscription last month, and we expect it to build slowly and then -- but then gather a lot of momentum over time. Obviously, we need to have the Full Self-Driving widely available for it really to take off at high rates    3 So we expect to be producing the sort of new design of the Model Y in both factories in limited production later this year.   4 So let's see, the Model Y in Texas -- made in Texas and Berlin will be -- will look very much like the Model Ys we currently make, but there are substantial improvements in the difficulty of manufacturing. So for example, the Model Y made here and in Berlin will have a cast front body and a cast rear body, whereas the one in California has cast rear body but not a cast front body. We're also aiming to do a structural pack with 4680 cells, which is a mass reduction and a cost reduction, but we're not counting on that as the only way to make things work. We have some backup plan with a non-structural pack and 2170s essentially.   5 I mean we're missing -- for example, like a big struggle this quarter, was the module that controls the airbags and the seatbelts. And obviously, you cannot ship a car without those. That limited our production severely worldwide in Shanghai and in Fremont.   6  So the Cybertruck and Semi, both are heavy users of cell capacity so we've got to make sure we have the cell capacity for those two vehicles, or it's kind of pointless.  We can make a small number of vehicles, but the effect of cost if you make a small number of vehicles is insane, like they would literally cost $1 million apiece or more. There's a reason why you do things in volume production, which is to get the economies to scale and get the cost down. So we are looking at a pretty massive increase in cell availability next year. But it's not like in January 1.   7 I do -- I think probably there is a long-term shift more in the direction of iron-based lithium-ion cells rather over nickel. As the energy density sort of iron ores or iron phosphate, might as well support iron phosphates. They're taken for granted. But iron-based cells, lithium-ion cells, and nickel-based lithium-ion cells.   I think probably we'll see a shift -- my guess is probably to two-thirds iron, one-third nickel, or something on that order.    8 - Superchargers We're currently thinking it's a real simple thing where you just download the Tesla app, and you go to Supercharger. And you just indicate which stall you're in. So you plug in your car, even if it's not Tesla.   And then you just access the app and say, turn on this stall that I'm in for how much electricity. And this should basically work with I think almost any manufacturer's cars. There will be time constraints. If the charge rate is super slow, then somebody will be charged more because the biggest constraint at the Supercharger is time, how occupied is the stall.   And we'll also be smarter with how we charge for electricity at the Supercharger. So rush hour charging will be more expensive than off-hours is charging because there are times when the Superchargers are empty and times when they're jam-packed. And so it makes sense to have some time-based discrimination.   9  So an adapter is needed to work for EVs in North America. But people could buy this adapter. And we anticipate having it available at the Superchargers as well if people don't sort of steal them or something.   Andrew Baglino -- Senior Vice President, Powertrain and Energy Engineering We have a good solution to that.   10 Andrew Baglino -- Senior Vice President, Powertrain and Energy Engineering On the reliability side, as Elon mentioned, we have successfully validated performance and the lifetime durability of the 4680 cells produced in Kato, and we're continuing ongoing verification of that reliability. We're actually accruing over one million equivalent miles on our cells that we produce every month. In our testing activities, the focus on that is very clear. We want high-quality cells for all of our customers.   11 I see us sort of like consolidating around a 4680 nickel-based structural pack for long-range vehicles. And then not necessarily a 4680 format, but some other format for iron-based cells.   So right now, we kind of have the Baskin Robbins of batteries situation, where there's so many formats and so many chemistries, that it's like we've got like 36 flavors of battery at this point. This is just -- this results in an engineering drag coefficient where each variants of cell chemistry and format requires as to an amount of engineering to maintain it and troubleshoot, and this inhibits our forward progress. So it is going to be important to consolidate to maybe -- ideally two form factors, maybe three, but ideally two. And then just one nickel chemistry and one iron chemistry   12 We have a massive backlog in Powerwall demand that man to Powerwall versus production is an insane mismatch. Now part of that problem is also the semiconductor issue. So we used a lot of the same chips in the Powerwall as you do in a car, so it's like, which one do want to make? Cars or Powerwalls? So we need to make cars, so therefore Powerwall production has been reduced. But as the semiconductor shortage is alleviated, then we can massively ramp up Powerwall production.   13 any given price is going to be wrong, so we'll just adjust it over time as we see the value proposition makes sense to people. So we're just really -- I'm not thinking about this a lot right now. We need to make Full Self-Driving work in order for it to be a compelling value proposition. Otherwise, people are kind of betting on the future. Like right now, does it make sense for somebody to do FSD subscription? I think it's debatable. But once we have Full Self-Driving widely deployed, then the value proposition will be clear. And at that point, I think basically everyone will use it, or it could be a rare individual who doesn't.     In summary, and for balance, on the negative side...   Tesla Semi, Cybertruck & 4680 cells delayed to 2022 Why is the Model X AWOL? Why was the Model S halted and how's the ramp? Elon said 1000GWh of batteries needed, or maybe 2000. Is that just a guess? Bitcoin? No clarity on Berlin & Austin ramp No disclosure of FSD take-rate when asked Strong warning that full year depends on chips Is Tesla insurance still on the roadmap?       QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM   With 2877 Superchargers globally and 25000 stalls, what do you think about Tesla's plan to open up the network to everyone?   Email me your thoughts and I'll read them out on Sunday – hello@evnewsdaily.com   It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast.   And  if you have an Amazon Echo, download our Alexa Skill, search for EV News Daily and add it as a flash briefing.   Come and say hi on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter just search EV News Daily, have a wonderful day, I'll catch you tomorrow and remember…there's no such thing as a self-charging hybrid.   PREMIUM PARTNERS PHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE BRAD CROSBY PORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATI AUDI CINCINNATI EAST VOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST NATIONALCARCHARGING.COM and ALOHACHARGE.COM DEREK REILLY FROM THE EV REVIEW IRELAND YOUTUBE CHANNEL RICHARD AT RSEV.CO.UK – FOR BUYING AND SELLING EVS IN THE UK EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM/

Show #713   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 1st March 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   MODEL Y BEING  STOCKPILED AT FREMONT "Tesla has begun preparations for the first set of Model Y deliveries that are scheduled to take place as early as March 15. Car carriers loaded with Tesla’s all-electric crossover were spotted over the weekend alongside a stockpile of Model Y at the company’s factory lot in Fremont, California." reports Gene at Teslarati: "Tesla enthusiast Wilson Lam shared photos of a fleet of Model Y being loaded onto car carriers over the weekend, a signal that the electric carmaker is in the final stages of delivery preparation. While it’s unclear it the Model Y vehicles spotted in car haulers are display vehicles for showrooms or customer cars, the fleet of Tesla crossovers in Deep Blue Metallic, Pearl White Multi-Coat, and Red Multi-Coat joins dozens of other Model Y sightings taking place in California."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-y-fremont-lot-car-carrier-hauler/   FIRST IMAGES OF THE TESLA MODEL Y INTERIOR IN THE WILD mrleetesla on Twitter -two USB-C in the rear on the rear vent cover.. 12v outlet in the trunk.   TESLA CHINA STARTS SHANGHAI GIGAFACTORY 3 PHASE 2 TO BUILD MODEL Y "Tesla China has started construction on Phase 2 of Gigafactory 3 Shanghai. This will likely support Tesla Model Y production. This work started immediately after Phase 1.5 which was for the Battery and Powertrain workshop. In a video, Jason Yang calls it Phase 3." according to NextBigFuture.com.   https://www.nextbigfuture.com/2020/03/tesla-china-starts-shanghai-gigafactory-3-phase-2-to-build-model-y.html   BYD TO DELIVER 134 ELECTRIC BUSES TO LOS ANGELES LA Mayor Eric Garcetti announced this week that the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) placed the largest order for electric buses in U.S. history  — 134 of them will come from BYD. The record-breaking order helps advance the core goals of Mayor Garcetti’s recently signed Executive Directive — “L.A.’s Green New Deal: Leading By Example” — which includes measures to make LADOT’s bus fleet entirely emissions-free in time for the opening ceremonies of the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.   STREETSCOOTER: DEUTSCHE POST TO CEASE ELECTRIC VAN PRODUCTION "Deutsche Post/DHL announces they will cease the manufacturing of their StreetScooter electric vans before the end of this year. The Group’s CEO Frank Appel has given up on finding a buyer for its subsidiary, even though it looked as if a deal with China’s Chery was as good as made." writes electrive: "StreetScooter wants to concentrate on the operation of the current fleet alone, which comprises 11,000 electric vans and is to be expanded to 15,000. Less than six months ago, StreetScooter and Chinese EV manufacturer Chery signed a letter of intent for a joint venture during German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s trip to China. Back then, in September, Chery and StreetScooter announced that they wanted to set up a joint venture in China.   https://www.electrive.com/2020/02/29/deutsche-post-to-cease-streetscooter-production/   IS THIS THE MERCEDES EQE? "This could be our first look at the E-Class' electric brother. Mercedes-Benz’s electrification push will continue with three new hybrids planned for a release later this year together with the fully-electric EQA crossover. A product presentation from December 2019 hinted we could also see the EV flagship of the brand - the EQS sedan, before the year’s end but nothing has been confirmed yet. It turns out there might be yet another electric sedan in the works and this video could be our first look at it." says Yahoo! today: "The clip shows two Mercedes prototypes and one of them is obviously the EQS. The other one, however, features a modified and shortened body, which hints we could be looking at the upcoming EQE EV. Think of it as the electric version of today’s E-Class, similar to what the EQS will be for the S-Class."   https://sports.yahoo.com/mercedes-eqe-082012634.html   CHARGEPOINT CEO EXPLAINS WHY HE ORDERED A TESLA MODEL Y "When it came time for Pasquale Romano, the CEO of the electric-vehicle charging company ChargePoint, to choose his next EV, it was a close call between Tesla's Model Y SUV and the Ford Mustang Mach-E SUV." writes Business Insider: "Ultimately, the Model Y won out due to its release date and Romano's experience with Tesla's Model S sedan, Romano told Business Insider. On paper, the Model Y and Mustang Mach-E are similar in many areas, though the Model Y has an edge in range, starting price, seating capacity, and cargo space. It remains to be seen which of the two electric-vehicles shoppers will prefer, though there have been signs from Tesla and Ford suggesting each could ending up ranking among the best-selling EVs. We had only been in the car for about 3 minutes when he began to smile and shake his head at how good the performance was.  As we drove up a steep and curvy mountain road, he was having so much fun he actually laughed out loud!  When we were climbing up a particularly steep section, he exclaimed, "It's actually accelerating going up this!"  As we came back down, he marveled at the regenerative braking.  Later, after we pulled back into my driveway, he put it in park and turned to me...he smiled and stuck out his hand.  As I shook it, he said, "Thank you.  I had no idea." So to my fellow EV owners, I say this:  You do not have to convince your friends and family that EVs are great.  All that you have to do is convince them to drive your car.  Once they are behind the wheel, the car will show them how great EVs really are!   LEANNE ROBERTS I think the only way to convince them is to get them in one, first as a passenger and then get them to drive one. The way we got into EVs was through driving my brothers Nissan Leaf. There are other options out there such as the EV Experience Days through Octopus which I think is a great idea to test drive one and get rid of any FUD. I do think that drivers days and dealership deals for weekend test drives would only help increase the uptake.   Robert Pryor  • 3 days ago I'm about ready to tell people not to buy an EV, if the reverse psychology doesn't work, at least I won't have to hear lame reasons why it's not for them.   Stephen Troyer  • 5 days ago How to persuade someone to buy an EV.   Step one, buy one for yourself. Step two, offer to give rides or let people test drive. (Just don't badger people about it.) Step three, live with the EV and answer any questions about what it's like, how it's holding up, what maintenance and charging is like I remember a news item from this show saying that the #1 influence on people buying EVs is their friends buying EVs.   D R-K  • 5 days ago If you can bear to let someone else get behind the wheel... let them borrow your car for four days, say Thursday to Sunday... make sure you have a tracker because getting it back will not be easy. Living with an EV, not just a quick test drive will do all the work .   Peter Zerfass  • 5 days ago How to persuade someone to buy an EV? Give them the key(card). Let them drive 30 seconds. Done.       GENEVA CAR SHOW CANCELED "Two of Switzerland’s largest trade fairs fell victim to the coronavirus epidemic, with organizers of the Geneva International Motor Show and the Baselworld watch fair pulling the plug on this year’s salons as the outbreak spreads in Europe." writes Bloomberg: "The car show, which was due to start Monday, was canceled as a force majeure after the Swiss government barred large gatherings, the organizers said in a statement Friday. German manufacturers Daimler AG and Audi AG said they supported the decision to cancel the show."   https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-02-28/geneva-car-show-canceled-in-swiss-bid-to-contain-virus-outbreak?sref=W369vOBR   EUROPE’S CAR OF THE YEAR AWARD GOES LIVE ONLINE Despite the cancellation of the Geneva International Motor Show, the organizers have decided to broadcast the Car of the Year award ceremony via live streaming on Monday, March 2, at 3 p.m. Seven candidates are part of the list of nominees for the Car of the Year 2020 including Porsche Taycan and Tesla Model 3.  Jury members will have to award 25 points, spread over at least five of the seven models. This will take place on Monday, 2 March 2020 at Palexpo. It will be broadcasted live on the Geneva International Motor Show website and on the #GimsSwiss Facebook page. This will enable you to discover the winner in real time.   For the US audience, 3pm in Geneva is 9am in New York   VW ID.3 ELECTRIC CAR'S SOFTWARE BUGS THREATEN SUMMER LAUNCH "Volkswagen is still struggling with "massive" software problems with its ID3 compact electric car, according to a German business magazine. The software glitches may force to abandon the EV's planned sales launch in summer, Manager Magazin reported." reports Automotive News Europe: "The problems stem from the basic architecture of the ID3's software, which was developed "too hastily," the magazine said, citing VW's own experts. Many of the system's elements do not understand each other, leading to dropouts and other difficulties, the report said. Hundreds of test drivers of the car are reporting up to 300 errors a day, the magazine said. More than 10,000 technicians are trying to solve the problems, which could delay the ID3's launch by up to a year, the report said. A VW spokesman told Automotive News Europe that the timeline for the ID3 has not changed and the car will be launched this summer."   https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/vw-id3-software-problems-threaten-summer-launch-report-says   CHINA'S CATL AIMS TO RAISE $2.85 BILLION FOR EV BATTERY PROJECTS "CATL, China's top electric vehicle battery maker, said it aims to raise up to 20 billion yuan ($2.85 billion) in a private placement of shares to fund its battery projects and boost working capital." writes Autoblog: "The fundraising will help CATL to expand its battery-making capacity in Fujian, Jiangsu and Sichuan, as well as an energy storage research project, the company said in a filing to the Shenzhen stock exchange late Wednesday. The company has partnerships with Tesla, Volkswagen and BMW. In a separate filing on Wednesday, the battery maker said it plans to invest 10 billion yuan in a battery manufacturing base in Ningde, where it is headquartered."   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/02/28/catl-electric-car-battery-maker-funding/   GILLETTE STADIUM SCORES A TOUCHDOWN WITH 50 NEW ENEL X EV CHARGERS "Gillette Stadium is diving into the wonderful world of EV charging with the installation of 50 new JuiceBox Pro 32 amp units mounted on 25 JuicePedestals." says Kyle Field at CleanTechnica: "The new stations will provide EV charging services to patrons of the stadium as they arrive to watch the New England Patriots or the New England Revolution."   https://cleantechnica.com/2020/02/28/gillette-stadium-scores-a-touchdown-with-50-new-enel-x-ev-chargers/   TESLA’S MASSIVE 1GWH MEGAPACK BATTERY PROJECT WITH PG&E IS APPROVED "Tesla’s massive project to deploy 1GWh of Megapacks to create a giant energy storage system in California with PG&E has received approval from the local authorities." says Electrek: "It involves four separate energy storage projects and two of them should become the world’s largest battery systems. the Tesla project will be a 182.5MW / 730MWh, which could eventually go up to 1.1GWh. Tesla is listing the project as having a total capacity of 1,200MWh, which would mean that each Megapack has a capacity of 2,673kWh. The total capacity of those 449 Megapacks represents more energy capacity than Tesla Energy deployed throughout its first 3 years of operation – all Powerpacks and Powerwalls combined."   In the comments: "This will replace 3 existing gas plants and can be built in less than a year. This is the very definition of efficiency and efficiency eventually always wins." Notice that the 1,200 MW-hr energy rating is 4x the 300 MW power rating; that is, the packs can supply the peak power rating for about 4 hours. That's a big portion of the evening power peak when most people get home from work and turn on lots of appliances and home heating/cooling. Peak power can be 10x the cost of regular power and is usually supplied by natural gas fired steam turbines. This is a smart move by PG&E to reduce the total cost of electricity to their customers. While it's only a first step given the magnitude of the power consumption on the grid, it is an indicator of where technology is taking us in grid modernization.   https://electrek.co/2020/02/27/tesla-1gwh-megapack-battery-project-pge-approved/   A SNAPSHOT OF EU NEW PASSENGER CAR MARKETS IN JANUARY Starting this year, manufacturers in the European Union (EU) must comply with the next phase of mandatory CO2 standards for new vehicle fleets. An average fleet-wide target of 95 grams per kilometer (g/km) applies to 95% of the new passenger cars in 2020, and will apply to the whole new car fleet from 2021." says the ICCT.org: "In France, for example, the average CO2 level of new cars dropped from 113 g/km in December to 96 g/km in January—a 15% improvement within only a month's time.   In 2020, every low-emission vehicle registered counts twice towards manufacturers’ average CO2 emissions. Norway has implemented a strong vehicle tax based on CO2 and NOx emissions and vehicle weight.  In Germany, electric vehicles gained in popularity, increasing from a level of 4% in December 2019 to 6.5% in January 2020. . It seems as if manufacturers are increasingly revealing their hands, not only showcasing new electric models but also marketing them in large quantities."   https://theicct.org/blog/staff/snapshot-eu-new-pv-markets-jan2020   MERCEDES TEASES THREE NEW PLUG-IN HYBRIDS "Mercedes is gearing up to introduce three new plug-in hybrid models this month starting with an announcement on their corporate Facebook page. According to the video, Mercedes plans to introduce a plug-in hybrid version of the GLA SUV, CLA Sedan, and finally the CLA Shooting Brake. Is the market ready for an electrified line-up of budget-friendly Mercedes products? " asks Motor1: "Each of these three vehicles will certainly use almost identical powertrains which makes it quite easy for Mercedes to launch all three versions at once."   https://www.motor1.com/news/401473/mercedes-reveal-three-plugin-hybrids/       NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   I’m waving a magic wand and installing a charge point of any speed or type free of charge for you – what is it, where and why.   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 235 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #491   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 4th June 2019. Thank you to new Patreon supporters. First up is NIGEL MILES who joins us as a new PRODUCER. And a massive thank you to KYLE MAHAN who upped his support to EXECUTIVE PRODUCER. Plus CHARLES HALL does the same and moves up to EXECUTIVE PRODUCER!   Fully Charged Live mention.   Telsa Model 3 Order Email Exchange from a Patreon Supporter   Update on Tesla Solar+Powerwall option when ordering a Model 3. I was on the UK Model 3 configurator today, checking prices so I'm up to date. And on the final page they now present a new option for Solar + Storage: "Produce and store your own clean energy to power your home and charge your car, day and night."   A BATCH OF 250 TESLA POWERWALLS ARE GOING TO THE UK "Tesla has been having a tough time ramping up its Powerwall production, but we are now starting to see more projects including a new batch of 250 Tesla Powerwalls going to the UK." says electrek, quoting Tonik Energy: "Tonik Energy announces that they are the first UK energy supplier to offer the state-of-the-art Tesla Powerwall. Following a successful pilot programme, Tonik has commenced rolling out 250 Powerwalls to homes across the UK, with installations performed by their in-house team."   https://electrek.co/2019/06/04/tesla-powerwalls-going-uk/   GM, FIAT CHRYSLER ADMIT BUYING REGULATORY CREDITS "Amidst reports on Tesla’s varying stock price, sales, and competition, the news is that the electric car maker has been making good money by selling greenhouse gas credits to fellow carmakers." says ibtimes.com: "According to filings by General Motors (GM) and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) to the state of Delaware, GM's agreement with Tesla for greenhouse gas credits was inked on Feb. 25. The filings affirmed how established carmakers such as GM and Fiat Chrysler have been relying on Tesla to comply with the United States’ environmental regulations. Tesla has generated almost $2 billion in revenue from the sale of regulatory credits since 2010."   https://www.ibtimes.com/tesla-rescue-gm-fiat-chrysler-admit-buying-regulatory-credits-musks-company-2797469   VW'S FIRST ELECTRIC CAR ALREADY HAS OVER 20,000 RESERVATIONS "Preorders for Volkswagen's first production EV are running ahead of schedule. That's according to VW board member Jürgen Stackmann, who tweeted on Tuesday that the German automaker now has over 20,000 "pre-bookings" for its battery-powered ID 3 small car." reports CNET: "European order books for the five-door hatchback opened one month ago, and according to Stackmann, the German automaker was hoping to reach 30,000 reservations by the time the IAA -- the Frankfurt Motor Show -- opened its doors in mid-September. While 20,000 ID 3 reservations are a drop in the bucket compared to the 400,000-plus reservations that the Tesla Model 3 claimed upon its introduction, VW's total is somewhat encouraging, especially as reservations require a 1,000-euro refundable deposit (around $1,100, £885 and AU$1,610)."   https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/vw-id3-electric-car-reservations-ev/   2020 SEAT MII ELECTRIC REVEALED IN PRODUCTION FORM "SEAT has confirmed it will launch an electric version of its Mii city car in the autumn of this year, marking the brand’s first foray into the zero-emission market."says Motor1.com: "Offering a provisional range of 161.5 miles (260 kilometers) on a single charge and boasting an 82-horsepower electric motor like that of the VW e-Up!, the little runabout will be imaginatively named the Mii Electric. SEAT says the new model, which is based on the gasoline-powered Mii that shares so much with the Skoda Citigo and Volkswagen Up!, will mix “dynamism, urban design, an advanced powertrain, and new levels of connectivity with affordability and low cost of ownership. 6.8-kWh battery pack. When it’s full, it has enough power to run the Mii for 161.5 miles (260 kilometers) on the new WLTP economy test, while charging to 80 percent using a 7.2 kW charger will take about four hours.”.   https://www.motor1.com/news/352899/2020-seat-mii-production-version/   HYUNDAI KONA HYBRID DEBUTS IN EUROPE AS EFFICIENT, LITTLE CROSSOVER "The Hyundai Kona family grows in Europe with the introduction of the new Hybrid model to join the purely combustion-powered variant and the Electric EV. European sales start in August, and there are no pricing details yet. The company isn't yet confirming whether the Hybrid variant is coming to the United States." reports Motor1.com: "The hybrid setup uses a 1.56-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion polymer battery, and the only available gearbox is a six-speed dual-clutch transmission."   https://www.motor1.com/news/352718/hyundai-kona-hybrid-debut/   ORKNEY TO BECOME UK'S FIRST 'SMART ENERGY ISLAND' "A £28.5M project is aiming to turn Orkney into the UK’s first “smart energy island”, by eliminating the use of all fossil fuels." picks up New Civil Engineer: "The ReFLEX (Responsive Flexibility) Orkney project will use new energy technology, including domestic and large-scale batteries, vehicle to grid chargers, electric buses and e-bike schemes, and an industrial-scale hydrogen fuel cell. It is hoped the project will eventually eliminate the need for fossil fuels on the island. “FlexiGrid” software is also being deployed to manage the island’s renewable energy grid and charge batteries to be installed across the island."   https://www.newcivilengineer.com/latest/orkney-to-become-uks-first-smart-energy-island/10042870.article   TEVVA MOTORS FUNDING DEAL 'OPENS' ELECTRIC VEHICLE MARKET "British electric truckmaker Tevva Motors has announced a landmark agreement with Hitachi Capital Vehicle Solutions, which “will open the way for fleets to move from fossils fuels to electric”, according to Tevva commercial director David Thackray." says CommerciaLFeet.org: "The deal, which Tevva finalised in late 2018, will, “enable fleet operators seeking a move to e-Trucks to replicate the leasing options they have long enjoyed with diesel vehicles”. This, said Thackray “represents an important step change for leasing companies”, many of whom have been “previously unwilling to provide attractive finance deals to customers due to uncertainty around RVs”."   https://www.commercialfleet.org/news/truck-news/2019/06/04/tevva-motors-funding-deal-opens-electric-vehicle-market   NEW CORSA-E ON SALE New Corsa-e: https://www.vauxhall.co.uk/cars/new-corsa/offers-finance/flexible-pcp.html   "For the first time, Opel is offering a purely battery-electric vehicle with the new sixth Corsa generation. Show #442   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Saturday 13th April 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   ELON TWEETS We'll kick off with a series of tweets by Elon Musk and because I'm being selfish I'll start with the one which is of most interest to RHD buyers in the UK. I actually missed this tweet but it was sent to me by podcast supporter David Finch...   "Model 3 drive unit & body is designed like a commercial truck for a million mile life. Current battery modules should last 300k to 500k miles (1500 cycles). Replacing modules (not pack) will only cost $5k to $7k." "Ahem RHD"   Journalist Tom Randall: "Tesla shares fell after Nikkei reported that Panasonic is freezing spending on more Gigafactory expansion. Panasonic said it reached 35 GWh/yr capacity in March. That's already enough to build over 500k Model 3/yr+Powerwalls—more than Tesla can handle" Elon replied: "Incorrect. Pana cell lines at Giga are only at ~24GWh/yr & have been a constraint on Model 3 output since July. No choice but to use other suppliers for Powerwall/Powerpack cells. Tesla won’t spend money on more capacity until existing lines get closer to 35GWh theoretical."   As for Full Self Driving Elon said: "Please note that the price of the Tesla Full Self-Driving option will increase substantially over time" "Starting May 1"   On the subject of reliability: "Model 3 drive unit & body is designed like a commercial truck for a million mile life. Current battery modules should last 300k to 500k miles (1500 cycles). Replacing modules (not pack) will only cost $5k to $7k."   On the subject of Full Self Driving, Patreon Supporter Cesar Trujillo said to me: "Shooooot. With all the Tesla news I wondered if FSD autopilot would come down in price again. I looked on my car and on my Tesla account and there is no where to upgrade anymore. I should have done it when it was cheap. I only bought the enhanced autopilot not full self driving during the fire sale."   And on the AI podcast: "“Buying a car today is an investment into the future. I think the most profound thing is that if you buy a Tesla today, I believe you are buying an appreciating asset – not a depreciating asset. The cars currently being produced, with the hardware currently being produced, are capable of full self-driving.”   GM REPORTEDLY WON’T INVEST IN ELECTRIC PICKUP TRUCK STARTUP RIVIAN "A proposed tie-up between the largest U.S.-based automaker and a fledgling company trying to make an electric pickup truck may be doomed, based on a new report from Bloomberg. The publication reported Friday that General Motors and Rivian have ended discussions that would have had the Detroit-based auto giant give the startup a healthy cash infusion to bring its products to market." says Zac fro InsideEVs.com: "The deal would have placed GM alongside Amazon as a major investor in the startup manufacturer, as the tech giant announced a strategic investment with Rivian in February that was part of a $700 million equity round. GM’s role was reportedly to help Rivian with manufacturing and parts purchasing, while GM would have received the engineering it needed to make an electric pickup truck before key rivals Ford and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles would be able to. Trucks are essential to all three of those automakers’ profits."   https://insideevs.com/gm-rivian-electric-pickup-truck-amazon/   TESLA MODEL 3 LEASE PROGRAM OPENS DOOR TO FUTURE RIDE-HAILING NETWORK "Tesla has officially launched its Model 3 leasing program to include any variant of the all-electric midsize sedan." says Teslarati: "Unlike traditional agreements, the Model 3 vehicles under lease will not be available for purchase once the lease matures. Tesla intends to use those vehicles as part of its coming autonomous ride-hailing network, a service dubbed as the Tesla Network. The decision to maintain ownership of its leased Model 3 fleet for such future use indicates Tesla’s high level of confidence in the development of its Full Self-Driving program. Any revenue lost from not offering its used cars for purchase is clearly expected to be generated through other profitable means"   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-3-lease-ride-hailing-network/   TESLA OPENS ORDERS FOR CHEAPER MODEL 3 VERSION IN EUROPE AND CHINA "Along with the changes to its vehicle lineup last night, Tesla also opened orders for a cheaper version of the Model 3 in European markets and China." writes Fred at Electrek: "After removing the Mid-Range and Long-Range RWD Model 3, Tesla is now offering only Standard Range Plus along with the Long Range AWD and Performance versions. Tesla says that the other versions can still be ordered as “off-the-menu” items, but that’s now Tesla’s main Model 3 lineup. For European markets, the introduction of the Standard Range Plus version results in the cheapest Tesla ever being available on the old continent. In Norway, Model 3 now starts 377,020 Kroners, which is equal to about $44,375 USD."   https://electrek.co/2019/04/12/tesla-opens-orders-cheaper-model-3-europe-china/   AUTOCAR FIRST DRIVE: REDESIGNED, EURO-SPEC KIA SOUL EV "We recently shared Autocar’s first drive of the all-new Kia Soul EV. However, that drive took place in South Korea. Now, the publication has access to a Euro-spec model and provides initial insight." says InsidEVs.com: "The gas-powered Soul is a popular vehicle in the U.S. due to its low price and considerable versatility. However, Autocar points out that it’s not nearly as sought-after in Europe. Kia is moving to change that by offering a completely redesigned all-electric Soul with a 64-kWh battery pack and plenty of range. In addition, while the new, gas-powered Soul will still be sold in the U.S., European customers will only be able to buy the battery-electric variant. Autocar says that while Kia’s e-Niro may be more practical due to its greater cargo capacity, the Soul has an edge when it comes to its interior, and it’s performance is about equal to that of the Niro EV   TOP GEAR DISSECTS THE PININFARINA BATTISTA, THE 1,874-HP EV "During the Geneva Motor Show last month, we saw the most powerful road car ever to come from Italy. No, it wasn’t a Ferrari or a Lamborghini – actually, it was the first creation from Automobili Pininfarina, which is now an automaker, not just a design studio. Pininfarina says the Battista is the “world’s first pure electric luxury hyper GT” and the car deserves every single word from this colorful description. In a new video, the folks over at Top Gear explain why." reports Motor1: "Probably the most interesting part of the video shines more light on the construction of the Battista, starting with information about the 120-kWh battery, which is, in fact, the same battery package you can find in a Rimac Concept_Two. Reid then talks about the four electric motors that propel that car – and one important thing we learned is that most of the car’s driving modes actually limit the amount of torque you have available in order to make the machine more easily controllable for the driver."   https://www.motor1.com/news/344319/top-gear-dissects-pininfarina-battista/   CAR AND DRIVER SAYS KIA NIRO EV IS A SPECTACULAR ELECTRIC CAR "Kia isn't helping its sales prospects by limiting the Niro EV to only 12 states (California and seven of the other ZEV states—but neither Vermont nor Maine—plus Georgia, Texas, Washington, and Hawaii). Although Niro EVs are already being produced in Kia's Hwaseong, South Korea, plant and are en route to U.S. dealer lots, pricing has yet to be announced. But a safe bet is that they will arrive at the same $37,495 the Kona Electric demands. Plus, Hyundai and Kia have sold so few electrified vehicles that theirs will get the maximum $7500 federal tax credit for years to come—a perk for which Teslas and Chevys no longer qualify."   https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/a26144426/2019-kia-niro-ev-driven/   KIA MIGHT START MAKING ELECTRIC CARS IN EUROPE "Kia is experiencing a success story with its lineup of plug-in hybrids and full electric vehicles. Which has now presented it with a problem of making enough to satisfy demand. That’s why it’s reportedly looking into building its electrified cars in Europe." reports InsideEVs.com: "While the Niro, Optima and Soul hybrids and electrics are currently all made in South Korea for global consumption, Kia may leverage its plant in Slovakia to supply European markets, according to Automotive News Europe. Kia Europe Chief Operating Officer Emilio Herrera told the publication the company would need to sell 32,000 EVs every year from 2021 to comply with the EU’s emissions regulations. Wieviel ist eine gute Mission und Vision in Euro wert?

Leader's Foresight | Dr. Pero Mićić (Deutsch)

It would be easy to imagine in this age of Teslas, Powerwalls, and Nest thermostats, that we are somehow on the brink of escaping traditional energy sources forever. Yet, oil, gas and coal persist - and continues to shape economies, nations and industrial policy. Dr. Kent Moors, a global expert on energy and a professor in the Graduate Center for Social and Public Policy at Duquesne University, where he directs the Energy Policy Research Group, has some ideas on why that may be. He has also had a fascinating life. You will hear how I try, unsuccessfully on a number of occasions, to get him to talk about his former life as a covert operative working for the State Department.
