Former FBI profiler James R. Fitzgerald joins Tim to talk about his key role in cracking one of the most notorious serial killer cases in American history – the Unabomber.  James was involved in the pioneering of something called forensic linguistics. The FBI used this profiling approach to identify and capture one of the most notorious serial killers in American history, Ted Kaczynski, otherwise known as the Unabomber. https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/shapingopinion/Unabomber_auphonic.mp3 One of the most notorious serial killers in American history was someone who terrorized the country in his own way over 17 years, starting in the late 1970s. The mysterious killer became known as the Unabomber because his targets were mostly people associated with universities or airlines.  The UN in Unabomber stood for university. The A stood for airlines. The killer's mode of operation was to send mail bombs to his targets, who were academics, business people and others. Over the course of those 17 years – in 16 separate bombings - the Unabomber killed three and injured 23 others. The killer was meticulous, leaving no forensic evidence that could be traced back to him in the packages he sent. No DNA evidence, no fingerprints, nothing. The FBI created a task force based in San Francisco. They called it the UNABOM Task Force or UTF. An army of FBI specialists and operatives worked in the UTF, working to identify and capture the Unabomber. Their approach was mostly traditional criminal investigation work. Use what forensic evidence they thought they had to create a profile of the killer. And then pursue leads. Much of the initial profile was based on assumptions and conjecture that may have been consistent with other FBI cases over the years. But the case was going nowhere. Then in 1995, the FBI decided to focus on the language. If the Unabomber made one mistake it was his propensity to write. He sent a series of letters to major newspapers and magazines, including one 35,000-word manifesto that he sent to the New York Times and four other publications. That document the killer titled “Industrial Society and Its Future.” James R. Fitzgerald and his team at the FBI focused on that manifesto and the Unabomber's other writings to create a profile based on the clues they could find in the writings themselves.  This new approach would be called, “forensic linguistics.” Through a rapid series of events, the FBI made significant headway in the case, which culminated in the capture and arrest of Ted Kaczynski on April 3, 1996. The FBI Director appointed him as the Inspector in Charge of the fugitive hunt for Eric Robert Rudolph, who detonated a bomb at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta and murdered a police officer in Birmingham, Alabama in January 1998. In March 2000, he traveled overseas with former FBI Director Louis Freeh to facilitate joint investigations of international terrorism and al-Qaeda in the Far East. It was clearly time to move on. I applied to, was selected by, and joined…the FBI. After graduating from yet another law enforcement academy, this one in Quantico, Virginia, I found myself in early 1988 as a brand new FBI agent assigned to New York City. On this episode of Blunt Force Truth, Chuck and Mark arejoined by Terry Turchie. Terry has spent much of his professional career working for the FBI and has seen the movement toward communism from within the FBI. They kick off by discussing how our government and law enforcement agencies have had progressive ideologist at all levels, for many decades. Terry explains the motivation behind these individuals pushing for socialism, and in many cases, communism. They discuss how this type of power grab has become mainstream within the Democratic party. Chuck and Mark continue by asking Terry about his opinion on the Democratic platform and how it lines up with the one-world government agenda. He describes how the Democrats, and others with Marxist beliefs, have always used crises to grab power and never let it go. They finish up the show by hearing from Terry on how the progressive movement is still deeply woven into the FBI and DOJ. They discuss how these radical political views are interfering with field agents’ ability to protect the public. More about Terry D. Turchie: Terry D. Turchie is a former Deputy Assistant Director of the Counterterrorism Division of the FBI. His leadership was the driving force behind the capture of the two most elusive and solitary domestic terrorists in U.S. history. In his early years in the FBI, Terry chased timber thieves in the Oregon forests. By the 1980s, he was chasing Soviet spies at the UnitedNations in New York, and on one memorable occasion, depicted in New York Magazine, wrestled Soviet spy Gennadiy Zakharov to the ground at a subway station. After a tour at FBIHQ in Washington, D.C., he took over a counterintelligence squad in San Francisco and within a year disrupted two major East Bloc espionage operations. Between 1994 and 1998, Terry directed the UNABOM Federal Task Force (UTF) that finally caught and convicted Theodore Kaczynski for an 18-year long string of terrorist bombings. Robert Graysmith, an author who wrote about the case in a 1997 book UNABOMBER—A Desire to Kill, called Turchie “the heart and spirit of the investigation.” After Kaczynski pled guilty to the UNABOM crimes in 1998, Turchie was promoted to Inspector, and was immediately tapped by FBI Director Louis Freeh to direct the Southeast Bomb Task Force in the North Carolina’s hunt for Olympic Park bomber Eric Robert Rudolph. His interagency coworkers admiringly described him as the “FBI’s Ace.” In 1999, he was called to Washington, D.C. as Deputy Assistant Director in the new Counterterrorism Division of the FBI. Between 1999 and 2001, he testified before Congress and traveled extensively overseas with former FBI Director Louis Freeh to facilitate joint investigations of international terrorism in the Middle East, Asia and the former Soviet Union. Turchie is a recipient of the FBI Director’s Award as well as the Attorney General’s Award for Distinguished Service. He is currently the Director for Counterintelligence and Counterterrorism for the University of California at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and speaks to hundreds of corporate and law enforcement groups based on his knowledge of how to solve complex terrorism cases. We discuss what we’ve learned about the life and writings of Ted Kaczynski, a man who questioned then opposed industrial society, rejected it for a quiet life in the woods and when the violence of our culture found him again, stood up and fought it. We hope his example inspires, and that those who have been led to dismiss him as a violent terrorist may see him and the society he pitted himself against from a different perspective.

Some quick facts - Fact - The FBI used the title "UNABOM" (UNiversity & Airline BOMber) to refer to his case, which resulted in the media calling him the Unabomber. Fact - It was David Kaczynski and his wife who recognized his brother’s thoughts and beliefs and writings after they both read the manifesto. Fact - It was David who approached the FBI, he provided them with detailed information about Ted and the exact location of the now infamous Cabin he lived in for 17 years. Fact – The 10-foot-by-12-foot cabin now on display in Washington D.C. at the Newseum, a museum dedicated to news events. Fact - Ted Kaczynski, genius IQ (170), was diagnosed a paranoid schizophrenic shortly after the FBI captured him.
