Today we are at the Newseum in Washington D.C. – where the history of free expression is explained and defended. 今天,我们在华盛顿特区的Newseum - 解释和捍卫自由表达的历史。 The first printing presses arrived in the United States in the mid-1600s, marking an important step in the history of America's free press. 第一批印刷机于1600年代中期到达美国,这标志着美国自由出版社历史上的重要一步。 A free press is important in democratic society. It allows citizens to speak freely and criticize the country's leaders without fear. Some journalists have even lost their lives for that right. 自由媒体在民主社会中很重要。 它使公民可以自由讲话,并批评该国的领导人而毫不恐惧。 一些记者甚至因这项权利而丧生。 But, it can also lead to news that is false. Last year, a fake news story about a Washington pizza restaurant went viral, causing a gunman to open fire at the business. 但是,这也可能导致新闻是错误的。 去年,一个关于华盛顿披萨餐厅的虚假新闻传播开来,导致枪手在业务上开火。 One of the most common terms we hear today is “fake news.” The public and politicians use it to talk about the news reports they do not think are accurate. 我们今天听到的最常见的术语之一是“假新闻”。 公众和政客们用它来谈论他们认为不准确的新闻报道。 While people have paid much attention to the term in recent years, the problem is not new. False news reports have been around since modern journalism started. 尽管人们近年来对该术语非常关注,但问题并不是什么新鲜事。 自现代新闻业开始以来,虚假的新闻报道就已经存在。 Today, information moves around us in many forms, every hour of every day. Even if we do not seek out news on our own, we often receive it anyway, instantly, on our phones. 今天,信息以多种形式(每天的每小时)以多种形式转移。 即使我们不独自寻找新闻,我们还是经常在手机上立即收到它。 So how can we manage this mountain of information so that fake news does not mislead us? 那么,我们如何管理这一信息,以免假新闻误导我们呢? We believe this requires news literacy. News literacy is the ability to use critical thinking skills to judge news reports. Are they credible? Can you rely on the reports to be true? 我们相信这需要新闻素养。 新闻素养是使用批判性思维技能来评判新闻报道的能力。 他们可信吗? 您可以依靠报告是真的吗? We use real media examples to teach useful skills and methods to recognize journalism over other kinds of information. We examine the differences between facts and what people report in the media as truth. 我们使用真实的媒体示例教授有用的技能和方法,以识别新闻界对其他信息。 我们研究事实与人们在媒体中报道的事实之间的差异。 The course provides tools to identify real and reliable news sources. And, it demonstrates ways to separate news from opinion. 该课程提供了确定真实可靠的新闻来源的工具。 而且,它展示了将新闻与意见分开的方法。 Professors at Stony Brook University in New York created the News Literacy education program. We will share it with you in simple English on VOA Learning English. 纽约Stony Brook大学的教授创建了新闻识字教育计划。 我们将以简单的英语在VOA学习英语中与您分享。 The need for news literacy is possibly greater now than ever before. Learning this important skill can give us the power to take full control of our own search for the truth. 现在,对新闻素养的需求可能比以往任何时候都更大。 学习这种重要技能可以使我们能够完全控制自己对真理的搜索。 Because as we've seen many times before, some news presented as truth can actually turn out to be completely false. 因为正如我们以前见过的很多次,所以一些作为真理的消息实际上可能完全是错误的。

While the Bible remains the unshakable center of our faith, understanding the broader context of church history will enrich our spiritual life in Christ. And so, Stephanie invites you into her conversation with authors Ben Lansing and Dan Marotta. Their collaborative effort is “Our Church Speaks”, a book featuring 52 Christian saints connecting modern audiences with 2000 years of Christian tradition. In today's culture, dominated by a staggering number of celebrities, Ben and Dan propose a focus on Christ-centered heroes of the faith, past and present, as a healthier alternative. Recounting stories of saints can help reconstruct what it means to follow Christ, providing a curative narrative amid societal disillusionment. This perspective isn't anti-celebrity, but rather an appeal to prioritize emotional and spiritual well-being by valuing Christ-centered faith over celebrity culture. Ben and Dan underscore the value of saints as role models in stark contrast to today's idolized celebrity culture. Instead of pursuing a transient notion of the "good life" defined by cultural standards of beauty, success, and fame, the authors advocate emulating the virtues demonstrated by saints. These figures, pointing to Christ, offer a remedy for the anxiety and vanity pervasive in modern society. Ben and Dan draw parallels between the decline of the Roman Empire and current Western attitudes. The past's cultural uncertainties mirror today's sentiments. For example, the conversion of Augustine and the transformative power of faith, urge today's youth to find fulfillment in Christ rather than material success. Through the lens of history, Ben and Dan highlight the monastic movement's rise during turbulent times, structured around prayer and work. The lessons from these Christian communities remain pertinent today, providing a model for spiritual stability amidst chaos. The consistent theme of God's faithfulness through uncertain times emphasizes the reliability of prayer as a structural life foundation, rather than a mere emotional expression. Josephine Bakhita and Polycarp, for example, left indelible marks on Christian history. Josephine Bakhita's story of transcending slavery through faith—embracing her given name "Lucky" while finding true fortune in Christ—offers a lesson in finding freedom through spiritual dedication rather than the absence of constraints. Polycarp's unwavering faith despite persecution illustrates the early church's resilience and engagement with Scripture. His steadfastness serves as a source of encouragement for modern believers facing challenges to their faith, reinforcing confidence and trust in divine grace. Ben Lansing's role as an artist intertwines with his spiritual journey, as he finds inspiration in portraying saints from diverse eras and professions. His insights reveal how art and history can illuminate God's work across various cultures and time periods. Stephanie Rousselle reflects on how the book sparked her curiosity to learn about historical Christian figures, like the first Korean martyr, thus enhancing her appreciation for global Christian heritage. Dan Marotta shares his transformative encounter with church history through Ben, emphasizing themes of self-sacrifice present in the lives of saints. These true stories provide a humbling counterbalance to modern comfort-driven lifestyles, inspiring humility and faithful witness over martyrdom or suffering. The conversation touches on the negative implications of social media, this "giant mirror" reflecting and magnifying vanity issues. Emulating saints can redirect this focus, reducing self-promotion and increasing service to others, leading to genuine happiness and fulfillment. Ben and Dan conclude by inviting us to look beyond digital media, encouraging engagement with visual and historical narratives that convey beauty and truth. Their collaborative project aims to connect past and present, offering illustrations and biographies of Christian heroes of the faith to motivate deeper spiritual reflection. MORE ABOUT “OUR CHURCH SPEAKS” Do you ever feel like you're alone in your struggles to live out the Christian faith? Do you ever read the Bible yet still wonder what it looks like to follow Jesus in the complexity and difficulty of our time? The stories of great men and women throughout the history of the church can help us form a bridge between the teaching of Scripture and our embodied lives. This illustrated devotional vividly depicts the lives and words of great women and men of faith. Artist Ben Lansing and Anglican priest D. J. Marotta offer fifty-two profound images and reflections on Christians, from Polycarp in the first century to the martyrs of Sudan in the twenty-first century. These saints, from every continent and century of church history, demonstrate the historic church's relevance for Christians today and reveal God's faithfulness in all times and circumstances. The artwork, biographies, devotionals, and prayers in this book are meant to spark our imaginations, helping us to be faithful here and now, in our own age. Each saint in this series is commemorated in the Book of Common Prayer tradition, in the global Anglican communion's calendar of saints. C.S. Lewis called for Christians to "keep the clean sea breeze of the centuries blowing through our minds." Our Church Speaks aspires to open the perspective of modern Christians to this clean breeze of the witness of the historic church. Our Church Speaks is an ongoing project, currently at over 250 portraits, with new work every week. You can follow the latest entries on Instagram. Prayers and liturgies in this project are from the Book of Common Prayer. This project is aligned with the historic interpretation of the Christian Bible, as summarized by the Nicene Creed and expressed in the Documentary Foundations of the 2019 edition of the Book of Common Prayer (pgs. 766-802). We believe it is the ultimate calling of the Christian life, and I like to summarize it with my motto, God's glory, our delight. That is why we invite you to “taste and see” that the Lord is good. And we have been doing this every day since 2019. We need YOU to keep Gospel Spice alive and growing. Financially speaking, we rely on people who understand this vision and who understand that we cannot function without a minimum budget. We run an extremely tight budget. For example, I work full time but don't draw a salary. And yet, we have expenses – for example, the equipment and technology we use, and also the wonderfully gifted staff who make it possible to deliver high quality content all around the globe, and then the necessary occasional promotional budget to make it possible to be discovered by those who seek to live a life spiced with the gospel of Jesus Christ. We need your help. So we would love for you to consider if this ministry is blessing you to pay gospel spice forward. You can partner with us monthly with 10, 25, 50, 100, a month, or you can make one donation, once. Completely tax deductible. So you're even saving money as you invest in gospel spice ministries. It is an eternal investment, and we are very grateful to you for it. Now it's very important to us that we give back as much as possible from what you give us. And so we commit to giving the majority of what we receive, once all of our administrative costs are paid, to organizations that fight human trafficking on the front line. There are many worthwhile causes in the world, so why this one? Because I have always personally felt deep compassion for victims of human trafficking – maybe because I have never been its victim myself, so I feel a responsibility to help those less fortunate than me. Also, because Jesus tells us to love our neighbor. Human trafficking is modern day slavery, and that is something that revolts the heart of God. We want to play our part in raising awareness and then financially supporting those who fight this great evil. So, we do some due diligence. We pick organizations who have proven themselves trustworthy of our support. And then we give money to these Christians organizations that fight human trafficking. So would you consider paying us forward at gospelspice.com/payitforward? Your hard-earned money is always well used at Gospel Spice. Ultimately, you are giving back to the Kingdom, a portion of what Jesus has given you. We are well aware of the privilege to steward your partnership. And my prayer is always that you will find your own life spiced with the gospel as you partner with us to flavor the lives of those around us, near and far, with the spice of the gospel. “Women are very worried about these (extreme weather) events, and they're the ones that really worry about the impact on communities.…They want to leave a better country for their children...They will say that climate change is something that really is on my agenda more because my children talk to me about it and they listen to their children and grandchildren. That said, the urgency around climate change ebbs and flows a little bit. Many of the single issue climate change voters are also single issue war and Gaza voters. So that's pushed this issue out a little bit. But in the long run, women are very worried about the climate.” Celinda Lake on Electric Ladies Podcast We are in the midst of the most consequential election in modern history, when democracy is literally on the ballot, as is protecting the planet. President Biden passed the largest climate mitigation legislation in history, with $3 trillion in investment and financial incentives in clean energy, communities, etc. The Republican nominee, “former guy” is in the pocket of fossil fuels and promises to reverse all that funding. What do women voters want? Listen to master opinion researcher Celinda Lake, Founder/CEO of Lake Research Partners for the unvarnished truth, with Electric Ladies podcast host Joan Michelson. You'll hear: How women voters today feel about climate change and how it influences their voting. How opinion research really works in today's polarized electorate with layers of technology and unconscious messaging to penetrate. How to talk about climate change to women voters so they listen and respond with urgency. How her being raised in Montana has made her a better opinion researcher. Plus, insightful career advice …. “Women often have far more skills than their resumes translate into. And actually we're going into a good period now where I think employers and organizations are looking for the skillset that you have more than the job titles that you have. And that's good for women because we have a lot of skills that we will have acquired in different arenas. Bring in your all… It's tough out there. It requires resilience, but just remember that you have a tremendous amount to offer and, um, you know it, and sooner or later somebody's going to figure that out too.” Celinda Lake on Electric Ladies podcast You'll also want to listen to: Joan Michelson hosts a Forum at The Newseum on the Constitutional Amendment that certified women's right to vote, the 19th Amendment. Things take time. A message we all hear. But one that took me too long to understand. What if it did take a while? What if there is no shortcut? The key is just accepting this and enjoying the ride. The people you admire the most, are most likely 10 years plus in their journey. That is a common theme among them all. It is very rare to admire someone 1 month into their craft. On today's very special episode, we share the exciting events that happened at the National Constitution Center earlier this week. To celebrate the unveiling of the First Amendment tablet—once featured on the facade of the Newseum in Washington, D.C., now at its new home in the Grand Hall Overlook of the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia—free speech defenders Randall Kennedy of Harvard Law School, former ACLU President Nadine Strossen of New York Law School, and Greg Lukianoff of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education join for a discussion of why the First Amendment matters today. A dedication ceremony with remarks from the Honorable J. Michael Luttig, former judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit; Jan Neuharth, chair and CEO of the Freedom Forum; and Jeffrey Rosen, president and CEO of the National Constitution Center, follows. This program was presented in celebration of the newly installed First Amendment tablet at the National Constitution Center donated by the Freedom Forum, which works to foster First Amendment freedoms for all. In honor of the confirmation hearings for Ketanji Brown Jackson to the U.S. Supreme Court, this is a replay of Joan's interview with Dr. Marcia Chatelain of Georgetown University on the role of Black Women Suffragists in women getting the right to vote. This episode was recorded under our previous name, Green Connections Radio, and before President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were elected. When the 19th Amendment ratified that women have the right to vote in this country, black women were not included. However, black women suffragists were quite strategic , as you'll hear as you listen to professor Chatelain, professor of history and African American Studies at Georgetown University. You'll hear: How black women managed the racial tensions within the suffrage movement. Stories of remarkable black women suffragists who played a critical role in successful passage of the Amendment. Strategies the black women suffragists employed to make sure their voices were heard. Her surprising take on the impact of Kamala Harris as the Democratic VP Nominee. Plus, insightful career advice! Also read Joan's Forbes blog on Marica's insights here, and for more on the suffrage movement, including Joan's sold-out even at the Newseum go here. You'll also want to listen to: Newseum event on Suffrage Movement, Lori Harrison-Kahan on the role of women journalists in the suffrage cause and how the #MeToo movement began in suffrage Brooke Kroeger, Author of “The Suffragents” on the male supporters of women's vote (Is Joe Biden a “Suffragent” for choosing Senator Kamala Harris as his VP) Jennifer Palmieri, Former Communications Director for Hillary Clinton's 2016 campaign and President Obama, and author of “Dear Madam President.” Thank you for subscribing to Electric Ladies Podcast on Apple Podcasts or iHeartRadio and leaving us a review! CHARLENE DREW JARVIS, PhD In her long and distinguished career, CHARLENE DREW JARVIS has held positions as a neuroscientist, legislator and university president. She received a BS from Oberlin College (1962), an MS from Howard University (1964), and a PhD in Neuropsychology (1971) from the University of Maryland, all the while balancing the demands of a wife and mother of two active young boys. Dr. Jarvis' educational background led to a career as a neuroscientist at the National Institute of Mental Health in Bethesda, Md. (1971-1978). Her research with co-investigators appeared in scientific publications such as the Annals of Neurology; Neuroscience Abstracts; Brain Research, the Journal of Neurophysiology, and Brain, Behavior and Evolution. Responding to the need to help re-build the economy of Washington, DC after the riots following the death of Martin Luther King, Jr., Councilmember Jarvis ran for public office and was elected 6 times to the Council of the District of Columbia (1979-2000). Her work as Chair of the Committee on Economic Development for more than 20 years was pioneering. The Housing Production Trust Fund, The Washington Convention Center, the Verizon Center, Business Improvement Districts, Tax Increment Financing, and legislative initiatives designed to prevent red-lining by commercial banks stand as important, and collaborative, contributions. Dr. Jarvis was appointed in 1996 as president of Southeastern University, founded by the YMCA in 1879. True to the mission of the YMCA, her goal was to give students both theoretical and practical applications of knowledge. Thirteen years later, in 2009, she orchestrated a unique merger of the University with the USDA Graduate School in Washington, DC. The Honorable Charlene Drew Jarvis was named one of the most powerful women in Washington by "Washingtonian Magazine” in 1989, 1994, and 2007 and by "The Washington Business Journal" in 1985. Jarvis' legacy as the daughter of Dr. Charles R. Drew, the blood bank pioneer, has given her a special perspective as an advocate for science and health education. In her association with the American Red Cross, Dr. Jarvis has traveled to many Red Cross and Bone Marrow sites around the nation to speak about her father's accomplishments and to encourage the participation of minority blood and marrow donors. Among her treasured awards, on 2014 Dr. Jarvis was given an award for her service from the Washington, DC Chapter of the American Red Cross. Dr. Jarvis is the recipient of more than 100 awards for her leadership, including honorary doctorates from Amherst College, George Washington University, Oberlin College, and a Distinguished Alumni Award from Howard University. As the conversation about racial justice continues in our country, we dig in to talk about race and religious liberty. BJC Director of Education Charles Watson Jr. joins Amanda and Holly for a personal conversation about his experiences and how his work at BJC intersects with the work for racial justice. He tells his story and explains how a seminal speech at a BJC Luncheon on Juneteenth impacted the trajectory of his work at BJC. Amanda, Holly and Charles discuss how different ethnic communities view the phrase “separation of church and state” and why the work for religious freedom matters. Plus, in the third segment, they discuss how they are seeing religion respected in books and articles this week. Segment 1: Introducing Charles Watson Jr. and a pivotal moment in 2015 (starting at 00:40) Hear episode 15 of the podcast about the protests and the president's photo op with a Bible at this link. You can read a list of BJC's current supporting Baptist bodies on our website at this link. Last week, BJC published Amanda's reflections on responding to racial injustice and the work of BJC's Special Committee on Race and Religious Liberty, which began in the fall of 2019: Reflections in solidarity: Our work to do. Holly mentioned this article about religious activism, distributed by Reuters and published by The New York Times: After George Floyd's Death, a Groundswell of Religious Activism. For more about the vigil various churches participated in on 16th Street in Washington, check out this article from the D.C. neighborhood blog Popville: Vigil Against Racism starts at 5pm on 16th Street NW. Watch the Rev. Dr. Marvin A. McMickle's 2015 speech on Juneteenth at this link. Juneteenth is June 19, one of the most popular celebrations of the abolition of slavery in the United States. On that date in 1865, news about the Emancipation Proclamation finally made its way to the state of Texas in an order from the Union army. Read about the domestic terrorism committed in Charles's hometown of Millen, Georgia, in 1919 at Carswell Grove Baptist Church with reporting by The New York Times: After a Summer of Racial Violence Across the U.S., a Century of Neglect. Segment 2: Broadening our understanding of religious freedom and the separation of church and state (Starting at 20:34) Since 2015, BJC names 10 young professionals each year as BJC Fellows. Learn more about the program at this link. Learn more about the Newseum program that 2015 BJC Fellow Dr. Sabrina Dent led on religious freedom and African American perspectives at this link. The Christians Against Christian Nationalism statement includes the phrase, “It often overlaps with and provides cover for white supremacy and racial subjugation.” Read the entire statement and add your name by visiting christiansagainstchristiannationalism.org. Segment 3: Respecting religion in our culture (starting at 40:24) The Reuters story Holly mentions is the same as the one referenced in segment one: After George Floyd's Death, a Groundswell of Religious Activism. Charles mentioned the book Long Shot: The Triumphs and Struggles of an NBA Freedom Fighter by Craig Hodges. You can hear a conversation with Robert P. Jones and journalist Joy Reid about white supremacy and American Christianity at our BJC Luncheon, which will be a virtual event on June 26. My guest today is Paul Watson. Paul's career in investigative reporting and photo journalism has spanned thirty years and has taken him across the globe. As a war correspondent, Paul has written for the Toronto Star as well as the Los Angeles Times where he served as South Asian Bureau Chief. He has won numerous awards for his work including the Freedom of the Press Award from the National Press Club for his reporting during the Kosovo war, Daniel Pearl Award from the South Asian Journalist's association for his coverage in Afghanistan, and most notably a Pulitzer Prize in news photography for his work during the Somali Civil War and the 1993 UN peacekeeping mission in Mogadishu. There is even a permanent display on Paul's work in the Newseum, a museum dedicated to the history of journalism and the press, in Washington, D.C. Paul joins me today from western Canada via Skype to talk about his book Ice Ghosts: The Epic Hunt for the Lost Franklin Expedition. Paul was present on board the ship that discovered the wreckage of HMS Erebus in 2014 over 150 years after the expedition was beset by arctic ice and lost to history. Today we cover what motivated Sir John Franklin and his crew, how the quest to find the lost expedition became an international fascination, and how Inuit oral history was pivotal in solving this century old mystery. Extra episode this week! Hot on the heels of our deluge of bonus episodes last week from the first DC in DC event, we've got one more surprise. That event kicked off with a premiere screening of Batman: Gotham by Gaslight. Before the screening, a big chunk of the cast and creative team behind the film did some roundtable interviews, and then we all had a chance to watch the film on the big screen at the Newseum. On this episode, we're bringing you the roundtable interviews from Bruce Greenwood (Bruce Wayne/Batman), Scott Patterson (James Gordon), Yuri Lowenthal (Harvey Dent), Bruce Timm (executive producer), and Jim Krieg (screenwriter). We've had Timm and Krieg on the show before when we brought you the media interviews from last year's New York Comic-Con (that episode also features director Sam Liu). For a full blast of Gotham by Gaslight, I highly recommend listening to both episodes and then immediately watching the film. But I'm biased.
