HALLOWEEN HUMPFEST means we stay spooky five days a week all October long and on “TRUE THREAT THURSDAYS” our scares are rooted in reality. For certain movies there is a level of skepticism and exploitation you can't ignore but today's discussion involves a film based on one of the most notorious unsolved serial killings in US history. The seemingly unending spiral that is the Zodiac Killer case can feel very lofty but David Fincher manages to adapt Robert Graysmith's book on the killer in a way that strikes a fantastic line between terror, procedure and anxiety. We're talking about Fincher's 2007 true horror “ZODIAC” starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Anthony Edwards, Elias Koteas, Philip Baker Hall, Chloe Sevigny and many more. A real ensemble feast so well balanced and compelling that you can hardly tell it's pushing three hours. Arguably one of the best films based on a true crime that exists with some of the most frightening scenes we will see all month. Can we eat this movies butt any harder? Following the discussion, Bob presents some of his own evidence on who he thinks the Zodiac killer might be and it shocks Angela to the core. A great movie that is very difficult movie to recommend because of its subject matter, Paul Schrader's Auto Focus (2002), the story of TV-star Bob Crane, is another of Schrader's portraits of a man whose self-destruction we watch with admiration for the writing and unease at what we're seeing. It's a combination of The Lost Weekend, Reefer Madness, and Sunset Blvd. with Willem Defoe at his creepiest. But it's much more than perfect recreations of Hogan's Heroes or Greg Kinnear's incredible performance: it's a movie about the power of movies and images and of how nothing seems real until it is filmed—an idea we see all the time as people hold up their phones to record their vacations, kids' sporting events, or office birthday parties. It's a shocking film, but Schrader seems to have been as shocked to make it as we are to see it. Auto Focus is based on Robert Graysmith's The Murder of Bob Crane. If you are interested in the details of Crane's murder—which remains a cold case—you may want to read John Hook's Who Killed Bob Crane? The Final Close-Up. A more traditional biography of Crane that seeks to tell more than what Schrader does in Auto Focus was published in 2015. Follow us on X and Letterboxd–and let us know what you'd like us to watch! For the final episode in our series David Fincher: Rules of the Game, we're taking a look at the story behind his 2007 true crime drama ZODIAC. For his follow-up to the crowd-pleasing popcorn thriller PANIC ROOM, David Fincher went in a far different direction with a meticulously researched look at the investigation into the real life Zodiac Killer murders in northern California in the late 1960s. In this episode, we trace the creation of ZODIAC, from its origins as a true crime book (written by San Francisco Chronicle cartoonist Robert Graysmith, who's portrayed by Jake Gyllenhaal in the film) through its years in development at different studios, all the way through Fincher's involvement, the filming, and eventual release. According to the actual police department files and evidence from the original murder cases, there was no "Zodiac Killer," only some phony letters to the SF Chronicle claiming credit for some unrelated murders, followed by an exploitative book full of falsehoods by Robert Graysmith (real name: Robert Smith, Jr). This book thoroughly debunks Graysmith's 1986 book ZODIAC, explores in detail the cultural and literary environment that inspired the original Zodiac hoax, and explains what really happened in each murder, who the real suspects were, what the real evidence was--and who REALLY wrote the "Zodiac Killer" letters! Note: This is the new, complete, single-book edition. If you previously read the three separate books, you do NOT need to buy this one again. This new edition includes ALL THREE original books: The Great Zodiac Killer Hoax of 1986, The Great Zodiac Killer Hoax of 1969, and the Myth of the Zodiac Killer. Hosted on Acast. Thrilled to finally deep-dive into the making-of David Fincher's brilliant newspaper movie/police procedural/serial killer obsession film 'Zodiac'. Topics: The insane detail that went into preproduction. Praise for producer Brad Fischer and screenwriter Jamie Vanderbilt. Soundbites from Fincher's obsessive attention to period detail. Sound from the real Dave Toschi, memorably played by Mark Ruffalo in a brilliant performance. The astounding character arc played by Robert Downey, Jr in one of his final films before joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Jake Gyllenhaal's fantastic portrayal of San Francisco Chronicle cartoonist Robert Graysmith, whose book was adapted for the film. Period sound from Zodiac suspect Arthur Leigh Allen. Some speculation on the state of the as-yet-unsolved Zodiac case today. David Shire's amazing score. Analysis of Academy Award nominations this film SHOULD have gotten...and won. AND MORE! A true labor of love episode akin to my episode on Michael Mann's 'Heat'....and I fear these episodes do so well that I may have to do more of them and all the work it entails! Let's hope so! After two murders in Canada, many outfit changes, visits to several towns, an attempt to cross the border back into the US, and an actual town mob hunting him down, he is apprehended by authorities. In Part 1, Tracy talks about the origins of Earle Nelson, his traumatic upbringing, both parents dying, his multiple traumatic brain injuries, and bouts of syphilis (which offered possible mercury and arsenic poisonings as treatment), his insatiable sexual appetite, and his overt religious fervor. Nelson had serval aliases and traveled all across the US to strangle women to death and sexually assault them post-mortem. There is a very long list of murders attributed to him and he worked in so quickly and randomly, he was very hard to pin down by authorities. For research, Tracy referenced two books: The Laughing Gorilla by Robert Graysmith and The Gorilla Man Strangler Case by Alvin EsauThe cocktail for this episode is The Dirty Wanderer. [YouTube] [Part 2] [Cipher Solving Document] HAPPY FRIDAY THE 13TH - Here's a spooky surprise for you: We're tackling true crime for perhaps the first time ever. At least on this level. And we're doing it with our patented nonlinear conversational flair. This is NOT some air-tight timeline of events, this is our particular opinion of the horrific story. Two siblings just chatting about something bone-chilling. We're talking about David Fincher's 2007 film, Robert Graysmith's seminal book, and more! In Part 1, we're looking at the earliest letters from San Francisco's Zodiac killer. He taunted the press, the police, and the public with unhinged letters and cryptic ciphers. But he's never had to contend with Guide to the Unknown. In Part 2, available exclusively on Patreon.com/gttupod, we're talking about the grim legacy of the Zodiac, including looks at some later letters and even some alarmingly modern pieces of mail from people seemingly copying the killer's style. This is a double episode to conclude the month-long miniseries where I detail the case of serial killer David Carpenter, known as “The Trailside Killer”. Carpenter stalked and killed men and women on the hiking trails of Marin County, San Francisco and Santa Cruz. Other suspected victims would disappear from San Jose and Daly City, California. Resources: The Sleeping Lady: The Trailside Murders Above the Golden Gate by Robert Graysmith, Penguin Books, (1990) People v. Carpenter, Supreme Court of California, Nov 29, 1999. “The Frightening Case of the Trailside Killer”, Strange Outdoors, November 27, 2020. “DNA ties Trailside Killer to ‘79 SF Slaying”, Jaxon Van Derbeken, San Francisco Chronicle, Feb 24, 2010.
In Part 2 of this 3-part mini-series, I'll continue the story about a random series of attacks that took place on hiking trails in northern California beginning in 1979, soon after David Carpenter was released from prison for an earlier violent crime spree. After three women were found murdered on Mount Tamalpais, investigators began to suspect that a serial killer was on the loose and targeting local hikers. This is the case of “The Trailside Killer”. This month I'll be sharing a 3-part miniseries. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Northern California was terrorized by a series of random murders that took place on hiking trails in state parks, national forests and coastal lands. The public began to suspect that a serial killer was lurking among them and the media began referring to him as “The Trailside Killer”. In this first part, I'll detail some of the Trailside Killers earliest victims and describe how he was allowed to slip through the cracks in the criminal justice system and set loose to stalk and kill more than ten people. Resources: The Sleeping Lady: The Trailside Murders Above the Golden Gate by Robert Graysmith, Penguin Books, (1990) People v. Carpenter, Supreme Court of California, Nov 29, 1999.
The True Crime genre spans books, TV shows, cinema, and most recently, podcasts. The public keeps a consistent interest in the topic, perhaps in hope to understand why humans commit crimes. In this episode we take a look at the section of True Crime that may be most fascinating, murder. We feature: Helter Skelter, the 1976 TV movie about the Charles Manson Cult murders. The Oscar winning film Monster, based on the crimes of Aileen Wuornous. Zodiac: based on the book by Robert Graysmith, which details the hunt for the infamous Zodiac killer. All are compelling films that keep us thinking about human nature and cinema's roll in its portrayal.
Back in 2007, David Fincher created what many consider his best film, Zodiac. Hailed by dozens of critics as one of the best films of the year, it unfortunately never found its audience and ended up a financial failure. This week, movie lovers, join us as we delve into this meticulously crafted, haunting and sometimes scary film that details the obsession one man had in solving the Zodiac killings in the San Francisco area in the late 60s. From a script by James Vanderbilt based on Robert Graysmith's doggedly detailed books "Zodiac" and "Zodiac Unmasked", Fincher's pursuit to create as accurate a portrayal of the truth as possible give us a beautifully restrained look at how the police and newspaper reporters worked hard to try to find an answer to the killings yet never did so. We talk about how this potentially is the reason the film didn't fare well at the box office. We also discuss the film's impeccable cast (let's all give a hand to John Carroll Lynch's unforgettably creepy portrayal of Arthur Leigh Allen!); chat about the amazing (and invisible) visual effects used to recreate the San Francisco area from 1968 to 1991 that truly take us back in time; and cover how this film was the first film to shoot with the then new digital camera, the Viper, and what that allowed Harry Savides, the cinematographer, to do. It's a drastically underwatched film, in our opinion, and we think you ALL need to go rent it right now then listen in!
