Episode 157: Finding Relief and Inner Peace - Your Christian Guide to Inside-Out Living--when external situations, circumstances, and people are taking your peace away. Hey there, beautiful souls! Let's get real for a second – are you feeling like life's got you in a chokehold sometimes? Maybe you're crushing it on the outside, but inside? That's a whole other story. Well, grab a cup of coffee (or tea; my favorite is black tea), and let's dive into some truth-telling. In this episode, we're talking a bit about that inner peace we're all desperately searching for. We will chat a bit about how to live from the inside out, inspired by Psalm 16. Because let's face it, we've all got our struggles with people, situations, or circumstances that are driving us nutty at times. We're breaking down: - How to find that God-given peace when the world's going crazy - Practical, no-BS ways to grow spiritually (even when you feel like you're spiraling) - Why 'self-care' isn't selfish – it's Biblical! - How to stop letting circumstances, or other people, or your own crazy thoughts run the show...(this one takes some time, so be patient with yourself!) This isn't your grandma's Bible study (love you, Grandma! Heck, I'm a grandma and love it!) But we're talking real life, real struggles, and real faith. Whether you're a spiritual heavyweight and have been walking this faith journey for longer than you can remember or just dipping your toes in, I'm glad you're here. Let's figure out this whole 'peace that passes understanding' thing together, one day at a time. Remember, you are loved, you are worthy, and you've got this. Enjoy the episode. The world would take people out of slums. Christ takes the slums out of people, and then they take themselves out of the slums. The world would shape human behavior, but Christ can change human nature." I love this quote; there's just so much in this--Drop the mic, Ezra, amen. What would it be like to have unhindered, abundant joy in the midst of all circumstances? The beauty of the joy God longs to give is that it's not fleeting or temporary. It is sustaining, strong and true. As we continue to discover what it means to live for heaven, today we look at what it means for us to be marked by joy. Our Scripture for today comes from Proverbs 10:28, and today's worship is You Are My Joy by United Pursuit - Thank you so much for listening to today's podcast on being marked by joy. If life is especially hard for you right now, where joy feels especially elusive. Take some time today to ask God where his joy is in the midst of your circumstances. When you face a trial or challenge, stop and invite God into that moment, and open your heart to receive his wisdom. The good news of the gospel is that God meets us where we are, and leads us to abundant life in the midst of anything life throws at us. Have a wonderful rest of your day, and may God bless you as you seek him.
As we near the end of our week on joy, today we look at another aspect of the joy available to us in God, specifically how our joy could be so great that the Bible would call it inexpressible. May our hearts be opened to a greater measure of joy than we've yet experienced, and the wisdom and faith to hold on to that joy as our portion in God. Our Scripture for today comes from 1 Peter 1:8-9, and today's worship is You Are My Joy by United Pursuit feat Will Reagan. -- Jesus' invitation in Matthew 11 to find real rest is for YOU. First15's brand-new devotional book called Rhythms was written with you in mind. Each day of this 28-day devotional invites you to break away from your normal rhythm of waking, eating, working, and sleeping to discover a spiritual rhythm that, when practiced, will lead you into a more vibrant, abundant life in every way that matters. As we continue our week on living an abundant life, today we'll explore the topic of pursuing Jesus passionately in our daily lives. As we discussed the past couple days, abundant life is a gift, but doesn't mean it comes without a choice on our part to receive. Open your heart to the Father today, and allow your mind to be renewed to the good life he has for you. Our Scripture for today comes from Psalm 27:8, and today's worship is Since Your Love by United Pursuit (ft Brandon Hampton) -- With all the emotional and spiritual challenges of our time, one thing is clear — true peace is only found in the midst of God's presence. Yet finding that quiet space to be alone with God and receive his abounding love is not always easy. It seems like every job, role and club has qualifications. Even religions have qualifications - things you need to do, or have, or believe to get in. Is that true for Jesus? This past Sunday morning at Storyline's Gathering, we had considered this question and explored the surprising qualifications required to follow Jesus. The band performed songs by Coldplay, United Pursuit, and more.
United Pursuit - Nearness Month - Brent Ingersoll
We are all broken people, living in a broken world. It's that simple. Unfortunately, no one is exempt from the effects of sin. The good news for all of us is that Jesus steps into the midst of our brokenness, is near to us and makes us whole in his love. What's even more amazing is God wants to use you to see past the broken exterior to the hearts of the people in your life. Brokenness can often make us hard, bitter and difficult to deal with. But we've been given the call to see past that hard exterior and love people in the midst of their pain. In today's podcast, we're looking together at how we can see past the brokenness in others to love them well. Our Scripture for today comes from Psalm 34:18, and today's worship is Providence by United Pursuit. -- When you trust Christ as your savior and Lord, you begin a relationship that extends into eternity. However, eternity doesn't start in heaven, and you don't have to wait until then to experience a full life in Christ. The truth is that we as Christians are called to invest in our relationship with God in this life as well as in the life to come. And that means becoming more like Christ every single day. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus provided a systematic ethic for how to be his disciples. It was a relatively short sermon, but God's truth in that message has never stopped reverberating throughout the world. Our latest book, The Path to Purpose delves into the timeless wisdom of Jesus' most famous sermon, the Sermon on the Mount. St Augustine described the sermon as “a perfect standard for the Christian life.” While we may doubt ourselves from ever achieving such “a perfect standard,” Jesus' central message in his Sermon on the Mount helps us see that standard not as a burden but rather as a source of freedom, purpose, and a guide for living beautifully. To know more about God's calling on your life, request your copy today of The Path to Purpose: Christ's Vision for Your Life in the Sermon on the Mount, at supportfirst15.org.
In today's devotional we're beginning a brand new series, focusing on the fact that God is first and foremost after our hearts. In a world that defines us by what we do, God looks at who we are. May we openly accept his gaze today, with faith in our hearts that he always looks at us with grace. And may his pursuit of our hearts stir up a pursuit within us of his heart, setting out every morning to experience the fullness of his love and compassion. Our Scripture for today comes from Psalm 23:6, and today's worship is Since Your Love by United Pursuit. -- Thank you for listening to today's podcast. Saying “I'm sorry” isn't very difficult, yet true repentance always costs us something. As we continue our week looking at what it means to turn from our wicked ways, today we're going to look at the story of Zacchaeus and how he demonstrates the beauty found in a repentant heart. May God stir our hearts toward repentance today as we spend time in his presence. Our Scripture for today comes from Luke 19:9-10, and today's worship is Simple Gospel by United Pursuit. -- Being intentional about what we do with our time is a wonderful way to honor God as we begin this new year. A Light Unto My Path will answer these 7 critical questions: Why do we read the Bible? How was the Bible created? Why do we need to interpret the Bible? What is the Bible about? What are the best tools for studying the Bible? What can I learn from others? How can I learn for myself? In the middle of this week-long series on renewal, today we're going to make room for God to renew our joy. Joy is something I so often struggle to walk in as I allow the cares and burdens of life to weigh me down. But every morning is a new opportunity to come before our Father, give our cares over to him, and choose again the path of joy. May God guide us today into a meaningful renewal of joy as we set our eyes and hearts on him. Our Scripture for today comes from Psalm 51:12, and today's worship is You Are My Joy by United Pursuit feat Will Reagan. -- If you've wrestled with making Bible study a consistent habit of spiritual formation, A Light Unto My Path will inspire and encourage you to drink more deeply from the unending well that is the Bible. As we continue this week's focus, seeking to put love into action, today we're going to look at how simply being present can make all the difference in the life of another. As our world becomes more and more distracted, and takes less time to notice what's happening in the life of another, may God empower us as his people to simply be present today. Our Scripture for today comes from Psalm 139:7, and today's worship is Constant One by United Pursuit. -- Faith doesn't happen on its own. Discipline can be a tricky subject. Many of us have not seen discipline done well, and no one really loves being disciplined or having something they've done wrong pointed out. But something we must keep in mind with our heavenly Father is that he loves perfectly, so discipline must be a part of his perfect love. As we wrap up our week of looking at who God is, this is a crucial topic we have to look at to engage with all the ways God loves us. As we dig deeper today, may our hearts be open to God's loving perspective on correction for our good. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. Psalm 34:15-22 15 The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, * and his ears are open to their cry. 16 The face of the Lord is against those who do evil, * to root out the remembrance of them from the earth. 17 The righteous cry, and the Lord hears them * and delivers them from all their troubles. 18 The Lord is near to the brokenhearted * and will save those whose spirits are crushed. 19 Many are the troubles of the righteous, * but the Lord will deliver him out of them all. 20 He will keep safe all his bones; * not one of them shall be broken. 21 Evil shall slay the wicked, * and those who hate the righteous will be punished. 22 The Lord ransoms the life of his servants, * and none will be punished who trust in him. John 6:56-69 (NRSV) Jesus said, “Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them. Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But the one who eats this bread will live forever.” He said these things while he was teaching in the synagogue at Capernaum. When many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This teaching is difficult; who can accept it?” But Jesus, being aware that his disciples were complaining about it, said to them, “Does this offend you? Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? It is the spirit that gives life; the flesh is useless. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. But among you there are some who do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the first who were the ones that did not believe, and who was the one that would betray him. And he said, “For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted by the Father.” Because of this many of his disciples turned back and no longer went about with him. So Jesus asked the twelve, “Do you also wish to go away?” Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom can we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.” The Apostles' Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. The Lord's Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Collect of the Day Proper 16, Rite Two Grant, O merciful God, that your Church, being gathered together in unity by your Holy Spirit, may show forth your power among all peoples, to the glory of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all evermore. Amen. (2 Corinthians 13:14)

In this episode, I have a conversation with Eric Reding about how he decided to drop out of college. He talks about the fear of man he had, and how he had to shift that to depend on God through it all. He gives great analogies about what it looks like to truly be in relationship with Christ, and how God revealed that to him through this experience. Today in our week-long focus on the foundations of a quality time alone with God, we're going to look at the devotional piece of our times together. As we near the end of this year, today I want to create space to simply dream with God. God has so many incredible plans for you next year. He has so many dreams in his heart for you. And today as we create space for him, my hope is that he shares those dreams with us, that we could partner with him in running after the abundant life he has for each of us. To know God is to experience God. Just as we experience aspects of one another as we grow in friendship, we experience the wonders of God as we seek to simply know him. God is calling us to a life of seeking him with all we are. He is calling us to value relationship with him above all else that we would love no other but him. May you encounter wonderful aspects of relationship with your heavenly Father this week as we wholeheartedly seek to know him with all we are. The biblical concept of being poor in spirit is foundational to every aspect of the Christian life. Foundational to salvation is a heart-level acknowledgment of our need for a Savior. Foundational to experiencing God's love is acknowledging our great need of love. Foundational to heavenly peace and joy is an acknowledgment that this world truly offers us neither. If we want all that God in his grace offers, we must pursue a lifestyle of being poor in spirit. May you experience more of the depth of God's love this week as you discover God's heart to minister to those desperate for him. Most of the time our emotional happiness is based on our life's circumstances. As we continue our week on the simplicity of love, today we'll be taking a look at the joy that comes from living a love-based life. Once we know that God's love is for us always, unconditionally—no matter what, our hope is secure and joy is ours for the taking. May you walk in joy today as you lean into this love-based reality a bit more. Our Scripture for today comes from Philippians 4:4, and today's worship is You Are My Joy by United Pursuit. As we explore the simplicity of love this week, today we'll look at how God's love has redeemed us. There is an amazing Brennan Manning quote that says, “In loving me, you made me lovable.” And that is basically the concept we'll be unpacking today. God's love has come in and given us meaning, beauty, redemption, and purpose. It is through God loving us that we become sons and daughters; we become saints. I hope today you'll open your heart up to this life-changing love, and never be the same again. Living an abundant life means letting go of lies and past sin patterns that hinder us. These lies and bad habits can often feel comfortable, but they are truly keeping you from experiencing abundant life every single day. The best truth of all is that they have no power or authority in your life anymore through the power of Jesus. Once we release the lies and old patterns of thinking and acting, we will see new life spring up in our lives everywhere we look. May this be the case for each of us today. Our Scripture for today comes from Psalm 103:2-4, and today's worship is Head to the Heart by United Pursuit. First15 is a daily devotional written and recorded by Craig Denison. Through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus we have been afforded an opportunity to live an incredibly abundant life here on earth. Our God is nearer, more tangible, and has a greater ability to make his presence known than we've yet realized. He longs to make his children more in tune and aware of the depths of his love, guidance, empowerment, and nearness. He longs for our days here on earth to be marked by unveiled communion with him. As we look at what it is to live an abundant life here on earth, I pray that your heart will be awakened to the reality of God's presence and affection in your life. Today, in the last day of our week long focus on joy, we're going to explore how we can be carriers for the joy of our God. Joy is contagious. It's powerful. And it's meant to be at the heart of our communication of who God is, and what relationship with him is like. May God fill us all with a greater measure of his joy today, and a greater understanding of how to carry that joy into a world in desperate need of it. In our third devotional in this series on transformation, we're going to take time today to look at what it means to be continually transformed. We serve a God who is always for us, and always with us. In his power and love, he wants to continually mold and shape us into his likeness, that we might enjoy this life for all it can be. May God stir up our hearts to accept change and transformation in him today as we make space right now for him to come and move. In today's podcast, we're going to continue our series on the marks of a true Christian by looking at Paul's encouragement to rejoice and weep with others. One of the most powerful acts of love we can make is to follow the way of empathy and compassion. Jesus allowed himself to be burdened by others burdens, pained by their pain. And may we follow the way of our Savior today as we spend time in his word, and in his presence. Today we're wrapping up our week-long series of stirring up our affections for God by looking at what it means to have friendship with the Holy Spirit. The nearness of God's Spirit, the reality of his voice and leadership, is our deepest connection to God on this earth. And like any other relationship, any other connection, it takes time to develop a true friendship with the Spirit. So today we're embarking on a journey with one simple goal in mind: growing a little bit closer to the Spirit in friendship. May God guide us and empower us today, and reveal himself in a fresh way.
