Munster Technological University (MTU) has partnered with Cyber Skills and Research Ireland to announce the launch of its free Cyber Security Academy for 4th and 5th-year secondary school students across Ireland. The week-long programme, which will run from Monday, 9th June to Friday, 13th June, will be conducted online by the Nimbus Research Centre. The Cybersecurity Academy is one of the few programmes in the country that is designed to stimulate interest among young minds in cybersecurity and STEM careers. From learning about key topics such as ethical hacking, cryptography, and vulnerability analysis, students will get to experience them through expert-led workshops as well as hands-on lab experience. The labs will be delivered using Cyber Skills' advanced cyber range infrastructure, which will allow students to explore a range of cyber environments in a safe, sandboxed and nationally accessible environment. The academy will also give students the opportunity to interact directly with real-life cybersecurity professionals and to better understand the different career paths that are currently available in the industry and beyond. Dr Hazel Murray, Lead Instructor and Founding Team member of the Cybersecurity Academy, said, "This unique programme is specially curated to provide students an easy and non-complex insight into the world of cybersecurity. The module and topics we've shortlisted for the week will ensure that the students not only gain technical confidence but also use them in their day-to-day lives, ethically. The goal is to inspire young minds to explore career paths beyond what they know and to see themselves as future cyber professionals one day." Josh Graham is a second-generation career firefighter with over a decade of experience in a large, fast-growing urban fire department in the Greater Toronto Area. In addition to his firefighting career, he has more than ten years of paramedic experience, having worked in both urban and rural settings. Josh spent two years in the Training Division as the Technical Rescue lead, where he developed programs across multiple disciplines to support his department's transition toward mandated certification. His programs focus on NFPA standards while ensuring crews are equipped with the necessary skills, training, and experience to operate effectively. He has also played a key role as a Lead Instructor in several Recruit Academies. In late 2023, Josh returned to the Operations Division and is currently assigned to a station housing both an Engine and a Technical Rescue apparatus. He continues to contribute to the Training Division as an Acting Training Officer and serves as a Lead Instructor for Rope and Water Rescue, Engine Operations, Search and Rescue, and Firefighter Survival. A firm believer in the historic culture of the fire service, Josh values camaraderie, craftsmanship, and the traditions that define the profession. While modern shifts emphasize safety culture and individualism, he believes that the strength of the fire service lies in its shared commitment to training, continual skill development, and the mentorship of future generations. His passion for the job is fueled by the enthusiastic passing of knowledge, experience, and tradition. Justin takes us through his extensive career, beginning as a retained firefighter in 1993 and progressing to roles such as Fire Control Operator, Lead Instructor at the Training Centre, and finally Watch Manager at Eastbourne Fire Station. His career came to a sudden shift in 2022 when he was forced into ill-health retirement due to spinal injuries sustained in the line of duty. Since then, Justin has embarked on a new journey, becoming a qualified counsellor and pursuing a diploma in trauma therapy. Throughout our conversation, Justin reflects on his career, the challenges of retiring due to injury, and the emotional toll of leaving a profession that shaped his identity.The discussion also delves into broader themes of mental health in the fire service and beyond. Tandi Bagian earned a Bachelor's degree in Engineering from the University of Washington in 1979. She was employed by NASA's Johnson Space Center and served as Lead Instructor for Astronaut Crew Training; Flight Projects Manager for the Space Biomedical Research Institute; and Head of the Crew Interface Analysis Section. This last position involved supervising six Human Factors Laboratories to support NASA's Space Shuttle and Space Station missions. She also was a Principal Science Coordinator for Exploration Human Factors, and in that capacity informed the Agency's Advanced Human Support Technology roadmap in preparation for Mars Exploration mission definition. In 1995, Tandi transferred from NASA to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and worked at the EPA's National Vehicle and Fuel Emissions Laboratory in Ann Arbor. Along the way, she earned a Master of Science in Industrial and Operations Engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 1999. In 2012, Tandi joined the Department of Veteran Affairs as Director, Human Factors Division for the VA National Center for Patient Safety. That team created an award-winning Patient Safety Boot Camp' training for Biomedical Engineers across the entire VHA. With a vision to make sure patient safety is everyone's business', NCPS created strong technical partners across the over 170 VA Medical Centers, as well as with industry partners, to assist Healthcare professionals in providing ‘safer systems, safer care'. With 46 years of Federal Service, Ms. Bagian retired in 2022 and quickly became Associated with the NASA Engineering and Safety Center's Human Factors Technical Discipline Team.  And this is where we met. This HF team is responsible for responding to requests for analysis and review of human factors issues across the NASA Centers and Commercial/International Partners committed to NASA's Moon2Mars mission.
