Welcome to another Great Metal Debate podcast review. Today we got a special one. Maybe you don't know this band but you've definitely seen the horrific album cover for their 2007 debut Uterovaginal Insertion of Extirpated Anomalies. This band is Cephalotripsy and this is their sophomore album titled Epigenetic Neurogenesis. Gee, if only we could get Vital Remains to finally release their first album in 17 years that has been allegedly completed for 8 years ... Here's a not so fun fact for you listeners. A cephalotripsy is a procedure that involves crushing the head of a stillborn fetus in the womb to facilitate delivery. Obviously this album cover is a lot more family friendly than the former. But let's get into the music. The first single that was released two months ago was the album title track which has Matti Way from Abominable Putridity/ex-Pathology as a guest feature. Speaking of Pathology, the first few seconds of this song reminded me of the same guitar chugs in the beginning of the song "Tyrannical Decay". But that album had Johnathan Huber from I Declare War on vocals. Matti on the other hand, usually has a very distinct vocal tone but I honestly could not tell when he was on the mic. Both Angel and Matti gurgle and pig squeal their way through this whole track and I can't tell you whose who. Despite this song being accompanied by a lyrical video, it does not sound like they're saying any of those words. But hey, who the fuck listens to brutal death metal and expects to hear words? I listen for the brutality and the more disgusting it sounds, the better. "Alpha Terrestrial Polymorph" and "Induced Primordial Regression" were the next two songs I heard and ... Geez, what's the deal with every band I've been reviewing lately having the word Primordial in their song titles? That's just a little phenomenon I've noticed over the past few months. But then I heard the song "Excision of Self" which has another guest feature, this time with Ivan Tyulkin from the Russian death metal bands Insect Inside and Nauseating. "Entrenched In Fluids Of Enigmatic Predation" was yet another heavy hitter along with "Ulcerated Mass Of Pestilent Engorgement" which features Clayton Meade from Condemned. I have been a long time fan of Condemned but I also couldn't tell when Clayton was on the mic either. All I know is that it sounded every bit as brutal as the rest of the record. There are no duds on this album and "Lo Tech Non Entity" continues to prove my point. Each track is guaranteed to stomp a mudhole in your eardrum's ass. Don't believe me? Then check out the track titled "Arcane Rites Of The Transdimensional Progeny". What do I think of this entire album as a whole? It's definitely sick as fuck! Was this album really worth the 17 year long wait. No it wasn't, and I'll tell you why. See, this album suffers from the same issue as the newest Torsofuck album that came out last year. The reason why Uterovaginal was so good was because it was some of the heaviest shit that money could buy back in 2007. There wasn't any over saturation in the genre at the time. Bands like this back then were hard to find. Sure, Guttural Engoregment existed but there wasn't 100 zillion Cephalotripsy copycats yet. if I'm being real, this album just sounds like everything else out there. Aside from it just being balls to the wall, there's nothing overly special about it now in the year 2024. The niche for this type of brutality seems to only be original if its old. I know, it sounds like a weird critique but I'm sure someone out there understands what I'm trying to say. Its still really good for what it is though. But, I can't really rate it higher than a 7/10. As I mentioned at the start of this review, you should be able buy Cephalotripsy's merch from the website Reality Fade. But they of course have some things on Brutal-Mind and their Bandcamp page.
Welcome to another album review on The Great Metal Debate podcast. I'm Xander, and today I'll be talking about the upcoming album from the Nashville-based black metal duo Obsidian Shrine. I've been a fan of Obsidian Shrine for nearly three years, since I discovered them in mid-2019. I never go the opportunity to see them live, but I have heard from many people that they always put on a good show for a local act. The band's debut album – Anno Domini Satanas – is vastly overlooked and is a true hidden gem for any black metal fan. If the band Inquisition wasn't already proof that you can make quality black metal with just two people, then let these two guys proove it witht their new album Bloodshed Under The Black Star. The first song is the album title track, and immediately we are greeted with a cacophany of crystal clear yet rhythmic sound. It begins like any other well-produced modern black metal; but after 30 seconds, there is a sudden tempo change. It's a pleasantly triumphant battle hymn, made up of a marching band-style drum roll for a small build-up. Then… hell is unleashed! When the raspy vocals of Murmur kick in, you pretty much know what you're in for. This song's surprises don't end there. At the half-way mark we hear a guitar solo from none other than Sebastian Ramstedt from the old-school blackened death metal band Necrophobic. It's a nice treat and fore-shadowing what's to come later on in the album. “Kingdom Of Sheep” is another standout track, as it begins with the ominous sound of sheep baaing. The last time I heard a song start off this way it was the song “Satan Spawn, The Caco-Daemon” by Deicide. However, the baaing doesn't last near as long, as it is cut short by the snarls of a Baphomet. Plus, this song is absolutely nothing like the beginning of “Legion” as it is a very different musical style. The song itself is a dark-to-light. “Only War Remains” is a track that truly showcases how good guitarist Nazgûl is at shredding. As for the song “Luciferian Wrath,” it's every bit as diabolical as it sounds. “Angelus Mortem” is without a doubt the most evil song on the entire record – especially since most of the vocals are Murmur and Nazgûl at the same time. Which makes the song sound every bit as satanic as when Glen Benton and Dave Suzuki did on the last two Vital Remains albums. Track 6 is called “Indoctrintoxin” and it's probably the fastest song on the album due to the continuous blast-beats and the fast guitar strumming with plenty of distortion. Just like with all great modern metal releases, it just isn't complete without a cover song from the most influential musicians to the band. I told you Necrophobic was coming back: track 7 is a near-identical re-recording of the song “Nailing The Holy One.” Obsidian Shrine has done an incredible job of honoring the metal gods! “At The Gates” isn't just the name of a Swedish metal band; it is also the name of the next song. Yet another standout track for the band. But the album concludes with a wonderful song about good old demonic possession. The final track is called “They Who Dwell Within,” which opens with an audio clip from the movie Exorcism Of Emily Rose. Once you hear the voice of actress Jennifer Carpenter say the name of the track, you are hit in the face with an unrelenting hellfire of a song. It's an epic and hellish finale, which ends with the haunting message of Emily saying: “And I am Lucifer – the devil in the flesh.” You can tell that Murmur and Nazgûl both poured their blackened hearts and souls into the production of this album. It was made for their small cult following of fans and their die-hard supporters. Do not sleep on this amazing black metal album – it'll be worth every penny! I'm giving it a 9.5 out of 10. Obsidian Shrine's Bloodshed Under the Black Star will be available on April 15th through Negative Earth Recordings. You can pre-order your copy of the CD and order their t-shirt on Bandcamp.com.

Dreams of Consciousness Podcast Episode 204 features an interview with Ray McCaffrey and Dave Suzuki of Churchburn. On the surface, Churchburn is the unlikeliest of collaborations: Born from a long friendship between sludge/doom drummer Ray McCaffrey and Vital Remains guitarist Dave Suzuki, the project eschews the speed and technicality that Suzuki was previous known for, preferring instead to punish the listener with slow, crushing, oppressive metal in the vein of Winter or early My Dying Bride. I spoke Churchburn founders Ray McCaffrey and Dave Suzuki about how they met, and when they consider a Churchburn song "finished". We also discussed why they chose to record their latest album, Genocidal Rite, with newcomer James Gazerro, and whether Churchburn still lives in the shadow of their previous projects. My thanks to Ray and Dave for speaking with me, and to all of you for listening. Music In This Episode: "Relieved By Burning Lead" "Authorized To Cleanse" taken from the album None Shall Live... Here is the 31st installment of the Dreams of Consciousness podcast, featuring interviews with Black Fast's Aaron Akin, Artificial Brain's William Smith, and Topsy and Holm of Sanitys Dawn. These were recorded over three different nights during three different shows at Saint Vitus Bar in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Black Fast shared a bill with Hate Eternal and Vital Remains, and kicked major ass. I talked to their frontman/guitarist Aaron about the history of the band, their insane touring schedule, and what they'll be up to when the tour wraps up. Artificial Brain were a last minute replacement for Gath Šmânê as openers for Mitochondrion, Phobocosm and Auroch. I'd never officially met William before, but we have a lot of friends in common in the NY scene, including members of Grey Skies Fallen and his other band Buckshot Facelift. He's a hell of a frontman and a sweetheart of a guy. We talked about his onstage persona "Big Baby Brain" and the upcoming Artificial Brain album, as well as what Buckshot is up to. Sanitys Dawn were part of an insane six band Catbomb show that was headlined by the reunited Despise You. Their singer Topsy spotted me taking photos from the side of the stage and proceeded to literally get in my face. He made an impression, to say the least, and I figured that was as good a reason as any to put him and his drummer Holm on the podcast. At the end of our conversation, they said it was the first interview they'd done in 6 years. I promised them that as soon as I got back to Malaysia I'd get in touch with them for a real interview. Look for that to happen soon...ish. My thanks to everyone who took the time to talk to me, and to you for listening. In an effort to embrace his community the Chief of Police for Sanford County in Florida got rid of an officer who embraced part of their community. Was he correct? We talk, you decide!
