This week: a sister-cast episode to a series we have called the Inbetweeners where we on the bands straddling the 80s and 90s in rock n' punk n' metal. This is more specific to metal in the 90s after feeling the impact of the overwhelming shifting of sounds during the decade. Metal became a dirty word by the mid-90s as grunge and alternative took over the rock world, but a new movement in the metal genre blended all of these influences with the heavy. Thus, we give you - 90s Alternative Metal! What's this InObscuria thing? Our podcast exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This week we cover mostly bands that have been forgotten including some bands that we played early on in the podcast. The transition from the heavy metal 80s to the punk-edged alternative of the 90s was a time like no other, and metal bands that began during this time put it all in an industrial-strength metal blender. Hope ya dig! Send us a textThe Midnight Calls is a denim and leather Rock & Roll outfit from Chicago. The band is fronted by Spain-born singer, Taran de Pablos and features guitarists Adam Arling (The Last Vegas, Urge Overkill, Warrior Soul) and Tony McQuaid (Loudmouth, Frank Bang & the Secret Stash), bassist Sean Barnes and drummer Chuck Harling. Their music is heavily influenced by the blues-infused sounds of classic bands like Aerosmith, The Rolling Stones or AC/DC. With a recipe based on grooves, hooks, and loud guitars as the main ingredients, The Midnight Calls are not reinventing the Rock & Roll wheel, but rather rolling it down the road with the swagger and style that you would expect from road-tested musicians that have toured the US and Europe a few times over. We were fortunate to have them in the studio to hear about their success and talk about their new single So Cold.Support the showPodcast edited by Paul Martin.Theme song courtesy of M&R Rush.www.rocknrollchicagopodcast.com

This week we pay homage to bands straddled the world of the 80s hard n' heavy and the 90s alternative n' grunge. These were bands that were somewhat outside of the status quo specifically in the hard rock and metal world that seemed to be playing music that was more genre and categorization-defying. Thus we created our own non-genre called; The Inbetweeners! What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This week we cover all 3 categories and even some bands that we played early on in the podcast. The transition from the hard rockin' 80s to the punk-edged alternative of the 90s was a time like no other, and some bands simply got caught in the middle. Go and check out these songs and the albums that they come from and enjoy some music from The Inbetweeners! Second Skin: Tales and Truths from the Mosh Pit of Life by Jason Miller ABOUT THE BOOK: Second Skin is a raw and unfiltered memoir that thrusts you into the author's turbulent journey of self-discovery toward becoming a leading voice in B2B digital marketing. Battling mental health demons, grappling with the “what the fuck am I gonna do?” dilemma, and narrowly avoiding getting swallowed by life's uncertainties. The week of December 6, 2023 on The Metallica Report… Steffan and Renée do a deep dive into both the physical and mental iPods of Lars and Rob, as Lars shares more of his musical obsessions and Rob throws down his five favorite funk cuts. They also speak with Auburn University's Professor of Music and Marching Band Director, Dr. Corey Spurlin. The musical themed show kicks off with Lars and his deep dive into the heavier side of Lynyrd Skynyrd as he outlines his five favorite lesser known tracks from the Florida band. His other current favorite musical obsession? Warrior Soul, a band he describes as “in that zone zone between hard rock, heavy metal, but a lot of punk attitude and a lot of kind-of not giving a shit.” To no one's surprise, Robert is our resident funk-master and he gives us his five favorite funk grooves, including divulging that the Isley Brothers were his very first concert; it was the moment he knew he wanted to be a musician. Finally we hear from Dr. Corey Spurlin at Auburn University, whose marching band has wowed us all with their half-time show entry to the For Whom The Band Tolls Marching Band competition. Corey tells us how the band chose the songs they performed and that Metallica's performance with the San Francisco Symphony on S&M2 provided inspiration. This week is our 21st installment of an ongoing series called “Grave Mistakes: They Shoulda Been Huge!!!”. We bring you an in-depth exploration of another band that fits into our category of being an “in-betweener”: the amazingly awesome SAIGON KICK! This band straddled the world of the 80s hard n' heavy and the 90s alternative n' grunge. Like their touring buddies Extreme, they got a major hit with a ballad in the early 90s and got pigeonholed as a ballad band when they weren't that at all. We think this band should have been alongside Alice In Chains and STP… They Shoulda Been Huge!!! This episode is rooted in our Should Have Been category. This is a band that we have featured on the show before and exist in a category that we discussed at length back in Episode 133 – The Inbetweeners. They're from Robert's home state of Florida, but will our Florida-Man agree with Kevin's assessment and status of “Shoulda Been Huge”??? Have a listen and find out for yourself. Songs this week include:Saigon Kick – “Coming Home” from Saigon Kick (1991)Saigon Kick – “Hostile Youth” from The Lizard (1992)Saigon Kick – “On And On” from Water (1993)Saigon Kick – “Eden” from Devil In The Details (1995)Saigon Kick - “Dizzy's Vine” from Moments From The Fringe (1997)Saigon Kick – “Solitary Jerk” from Bastards (1999)Super Transatlantic – “Shuttlecock” from Shuttlecock (2000)Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

Listener Beware: Kevin is on his own again… Happy New Year! 2022 has been an amazing year for new music from legacy artists, current artists, and new artists; in fact, this is the third celebration of 2022 music. Some of these groups and albums we've talked about before, but we thought it was worth the time to recognize all of the amazing recorded output of 2022!What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection; an artist, album, or grouping of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. This week we celebrate our 20th installment of an ongoing series called “Grave Mistakes: They Shoulda Been Huge!!!”. We bring you an in-depth exploration of an awesome boogie metal / southern rock n' punk band from the grimy & gritty NYC Lower East Side of the 1980s: RAGING SLAB! This band featured equal parts Skynyrd and Metallica complete with a kick-ass bottleneck slide lead guitar. Touring with a cross-section of bands like Chili Peppers, Ramones, Molly Hatchet, GnR, and Warrant while boasting a southern rock stomp pre-dating The Black Crowes; we think this band Shoulda Been Huge!!! This episode is rooted in our Should Have Been category. This is a band that we featured on the show earlier this year during our exploration of Genres From The Netherworld (Ep. 137). Robert enjoyed them so much, he asked that they be revisited at some point. Unfortunately, their amazing brand of boogie metal was never recognized to the degree that it deserved; partly due to a series of unfortunate incidences and pure bad luck. Songs this week include:Raging Slab – “Mr. Lucky” from Assmaster (1987)Raging Slab – “Get Off My Jollies” from True Death (1988)Raging Slab – “Bent For Silver” from Raging Slab (1989)Raging Slab – “Lord Have Mercy” from Dynamite Monster Boogie Concert (1993)Raging Slab - “C'mon N' On” from Sing Monkey Sing (1996)Raging Slab – “Sir Lord Ford…” from The Dealer (2001)Raging Slab – “Ruby” from (Pronounced Eat-Shit) (2002)Raging Slab – “Bury Me Deep” from (Pronounced Eat-Shit) (2002)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

This Today's Boondoggle Special Edition series brings back the VGN Midwest Wasteland Catalog to our listening audience every Saturday. Back during a time when a group of men could get together and share stories about their lives before the world became so judgmental and offended by everything and Woke Mobs ran roughshod with their cancel pitchforks and torches. Wether he is fronting the Streetwalking Cheetahs, or The Dobermen, playing guitar for Cherie Currie, messing around in Warrior Soul, or just playing in the "Schoolhouse Rock" tour, Frank Meyer is the guy involved in some band playing somewhere in Los Angeles. Frank is a career musician who can say he has done it all, or will do it all. He is a wealth of knowledge of the Los Angeles music scene, and can honestly say he is all in, and goes from one band to the next, on a daily basis, no task is too tall for him to get into. Every time I talk to Frank he has more stories of just awesome rock and roll than could fill a biography and map out the history of music for the last 30 years. youtube Bandcamp frank instagram frank bandcamp trading aces instagram cherie n frank #thefrankmeyer #streetwalkingcheetahs #cheriecurrie #therunaways #warriorsoul #eddiespaghetti #theknack #spinaltap #therollingstones #tradingacesband

This week we leave you pondering: these genres that can't possibly be real; right? Humans love to organize and put things in categories. Music is no different. When someone asks about a band or song they ask you what it sounds like. You can either give them a generic term (rock, punk, metal), refer to another band or artist, or provide them with an oddly specific categorization like psychedelic operatic speed ska… Or something like that! What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This episode deals more with the Lost… Genres and sub-genres that are truly unique and oddly specific. We hope we turn you on to something new!Songs this week include:Dirty Rig – “Just A Star” from Rock Did It (2006)Raging Slab – “The Shield” from Assmaster (1987)Valient Thorr – “Stormstris” from Legend Of The World (2006)Dash Rip Rock – “Jenny Says” from Ace Of Clubs (1989)2 Skinnee J's - “Mind Trick” from ¡$Uper! Mercado (1998)16 Horsepower – “Haw” from 16 Horsepower (1995)Boris – “Pink” from Pink (2009)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/inobscuria/og-shopCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

This week we continue our ongoing series called “Grave Mistakes: They Shoulda Been Huge!!!”. This is Part 2 of our exploration and exploitation of the sleazy Detroit Punk meets NY Metal sounds of the amazing WARRIOR SOUL! This band straddled the world of the 80s hard n' heavy and the 90s alternative n' grunge during the first decade of their career. This time we unearth the second half of their rock n' roll road trip with the whiskey-soaked spewing of tunes from 2009 through their recent release in 2022.This episode is rooted in our Should Have Been category. This is a band that we have featured on the show already in episodes 33, 83 and 119. An American alternative metal band, formed by lead singer, songwriter, producer, and painter: Kory Clarke. Unfortunately, their brilliance and innovation have never been recognized to the degree that it deserves. We think they SHOULD BE HUGE… and we are ready to fly that banner proudly!Songs this week include:Warrior Soul – “Don't Believe” from Destroy The War Machine (2009)Warrior Soul – “Planetary Revolution” from Stiff Middle Finger (2012)Warrior Soul – “Back On The Lash” from Back On The Lash (2017) Warrior Soul – “War Ride Children” from Rock N' Roll Disease (2019)Warrior Soul – “D.O.A.” from Cocaine & Other Good Stuff (2020)Warrior Soul – “Out On Bail” from Out On Bail (2022)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/
