Send us a textEpica returns in full force with their 9th studio album, Aspiral — a testament to their evolution as symphonic metal mainstays. We recently caught up with powerhouse vocalist Simone Simons to discuss the journey behind the record, shaped by over two decades of experience and artistic growth. Drawing from the joys and challenges of motherhood and the rhythm of everyday life, Simone shares how these personal layers have fueled her creative fire. The album's title, "Aspiral," was inspired by a 1965 sculpture by Polish artist Stanisław Szukalski — representing the intricate, winding paths carved by the band's collective vision.Known for their grandiose sound and commanding live shows, Epica shows no signs of slowing down. With Aspiral in their arsenal, they continue to push boundaries while honoring the symphonic metal tradition they helped define. Simone also speaks on the thriving creative community she's cultivated through Patreon, a space that's inspired new artistic outlets beyond music, including photography. Interview by Kris PetersIn just ten short years Melbourne musical powerhouse Valhalore have entrenched themselves as a vital cog in the growing Australian music industry, their unique blending of melodic death metal with power and symphonic elements - infused with folk influences - has resonated with audiences both domestically and abroad.Over the years they have toured with the likes of Alestorm, Arch Enemy, Blind Guardian and HammerFall, winning over legions of fans along the way with their attitude and work ethic. With the release of their sophomore album Beyond The Stars on April 11, Valhalore look set to expand their presence even more with a sound capable of transcending genres and sweeping all in its path.HEAVY spoke with frontman Lachlan Neate and guitarist Anthony Willis to get more details. We start by asking how they are feeling about the album release."Absolutely thrilled," Neate beamed. "After waiting four years to release this music, it's pretty surreal that we're finally near the finish line."We ask the guys to dive deeper into Beyond The Stars musically."In terms of the themes of the album, it describes a person's journey from the beginning of their life to the end," Willis explained. "Each song deals with the different highs and lows, ups and downs, different emotions that one would experience throughout their life. And each song represents those different moments. Then at the end of the album, the final song really deals with what happens to you after we die, and can we become something greater than ourselves? So in that regard, the album is a bit of a concept album, and it's cyclic. Each of the songs that we have written pertains to this journey of someone's life experiences."In the full interview, Lachlan and Anthony further explained that Beyond The Stars is a concept piece that reflects the emotional journey of a person's life, shaped significantly by the band's experiences during the pandemic. Anthony emphasized the importance of the album's track listing for creating a cohesive listening experience, while Lachlan noted that the writing process involved contributions from all six band members and the producer, marking a shift from their previous solo work. This collaborative effort has allowed the band to develop a unique sound that integrates diverse influences, enhancing their musical identity.Valhalore plan to promote the album with a series of four theatrical shows in May, starting in Sydney and Melbourne, where they will perform most of the new material alongside older songs. Lachlan expressed excitement about the production-heavy nature of the performances, aiming to provide an engaging experience for fans and more.Get Beyond The Stars here: https://valhalore.rpm.link/beyondprBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

I was curious to know why someone who is trained to know how predatory the music industry can be would want to make music herself. Once we got to talking about the new Exiled Hope album, Apocrypha, the subject of free will versus determinism came up. Her characters and music brought whole new questions to this age old debate. Interview by Angela CroudaceIn an interview with Simone Simons, lead vocalist of the symphonic metal band Epica, we dive into the band's upcoming album Aspiral—a powerful reflection of their growth, both musically and personally. Simone describes Aspiral as a fresh start, where the band's continuous evolution is highlighted through their music and lyrics. The title of the album was inspired by a Stanislaw Szukalski bronze sculpture, a piece of art that left a profound impact on the band after a visit in 2022. Simone explains that the album's theme of rebirth, renewal, and self-discovery resonates deeply with the band members, as they navigate their individual struggles and experiences. The synergy between art and music is a key theme, with Szukalski's sculpture influencing not just the visuals but the emotional core of the album. The band embraced a unique writing process through isolated writing camps, allowing them to fully immerse in creating without distractions. Simone shared how the intimacy and collaboration during these camps fostered a stronger bond between the band members, helping them achieve creative heights while crafting songs with emotional depth.Simone also reflected on the emotional power of Epica's music, recalling poignant fan interBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
Interview by Angela CroudaceCradle of Filth's frontman, Dani Filth, sat down with HEAVY to discuss the band's 14th studio album, The Screaming of the Valkyries, their evolution over the years, and the provocative themes they've explored in their music.Dani shared that the new album brings a modern sound while still nodding to Cradle of Filth's roots, with a blend of fresh ideas and older influences. "It's a modern sound record, one step forward, but it also has a passing nod back to previous incarnations," he explained. This new direction is, in part, thanks to new members Donnie and Zoe, and the band's increased playtime during the pandemic, which helped refine their sound.Although the album doesn't have a central concept, Dani describes it as a celebration of escapism, rituals, and vampirism. He elaborated on the inspiration behind the album's title, revealing that it stems from the final track, When Misery Was a Stranger. The title The Screaming of the Valkyries was inspired by the impending doom of the Doomsday Clock, likening the sound of Valkyries' screams during Ragnarok to the existential realisation of impending disaster. On the subject of religion, Dani was candid about his views, stating that while he respects others' beliefs, he finds the notion of religion's validity in the modern age absurd. “I think time has just worn out the message,” he said, pointing to the age of science and the contradictions he sees within religious teachings. However, he emphasised that it's the belief itself, not the dogma, that holds value.Over the years, the band's dynamic has evolved significantly, with Dani noting that the band and crew have become a tight-knit family. He shared a personal moment, reflecting on a recent wedding within the band, symbolising the strong bond they now share. The influence of the band's longevity and experience shows through in the new album, which recalls elements of their older works. When asked about his favourite track from the new album, Dani pointed to Ex Sanguine Draculae, a song that takes him back to the band's earlier work in the ‘90s. “It just reminds me of the era that we did the Dusk and Her Embrace record,” he said. He also revealed the band's collaboration with renowned producer Scott Atkins, praising his approach to refining the band's sound and ensuring the production was sharp and true to their vision.Dani also shared that, if given the chance, he'd love to collaborate with Lana Del Rey, citing her gothic sensibilities and haunting voice as a perfect fit for Cradle of Filth's style. Fans of both artists may just get lucky one day.As for the fan experience, Dani recalled a bizarre moment in Australia when a fan gave the band a prosthetic leg as a gift, only for it to later be tossed onto the stage during a performance. "I don't know whether it was a gift or whether we should have given it back," he mused, "We did give it back though" he confirmed. With The Screaming of the Valkyries out this week, Cradle of Filth continues to push boundaries while honoring their legacy in the metal world. Fans can expect a thrilling mix of old and new, with Dani and his bandmates at the forefront, creating music that's as unpredictable and darkly captivating as ever.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

So often the genre of symphonic metal falls into the realms of rinse and repeat playing it safe. This is one of the reasons I never got into the genre but when it came to this album by Belle Morte, something was different. The formula had changed, the boundaries were being pushed, and all of this came out of some COVID era recordings. and a decision to challenge themsleves with outside help from guest musicians. Interview by Angela CroudaceAfter nearly three decades, Sharon den Adel, lead vocalist of Within Temptation, is finally bringing the band to Australia for the first time! During an interview with HEAVY, Sharon shared her excitement for performing at Knotfest and reflected on the band's long-awaited journey to the land down under. When asked about the band's lengthy absence from Australia, Sharon admitted, “There's no real good excuse except that it was difficult to fit in and to find the right promoter to bring us over… but after 30 years, we're finally coming!” She also discussed the challenges of long flights, especially with the notorious 24-hour trip to Australia, stating,"I'm going to try, it's going to be a new experiment.”Sharon is looking forward to more than just playing at Knotfest, where she'll share the stage with legendary bands. “It's like a candy store,” she says, eager to explore the festival lineup.A notable part of Within Temptation's music is their bold political commentary. Sharon explained that the band felt compelled to address global issues like the war in Ukraine and the plight of women in Iran. “We have a platform, and we stand for certain values… It's important to talk about these things,” she says, emphasising that as artists, it's their responsibility to use their voice for change.Sharon also opened up about the challenges of being a female frontwoman in a male-dominated genre. She shared that despite facing some initial resistance from certain fans, she's always felt at home in the metal scene. "I've always felt very at home in the metal (scene)… I was never separated because I was a woman," Sharon revealed. She also reflected on the broader impact her presence—and that of other women—has had on the genre, saying, "The more there is of us, the more diversity, and it makes the scene more interesting." Sharon's perspective highlights how women in metal have paved the way for future generations, encouraging young female musicians to carve out their own space in the industry. With their long-awaited Australian side shows scheduled in Brisbane and Melbourne, fans can expect to hear not just their iconic symphonic metal, but a band that's unafraid to speak out on the world's pressing issues.Catch Within Temptation at Knotfest and Monday 3 March - Princess Theatre, Brisbane, Thursday 6 March - Max Watts, Melbourne.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Roestig.

Musical evolution is a beautiful thing when allowed to flourish, cast free of modern constraints and expectations to let the metaphorical wings rise and sweep the band and their music into unchartered, exciting territory. So it is for Swiss/German metal outfit AD Infinitum as they prepare to unveil their new album, Abyss, on October 11.Since setting the tone with their debut album Chapter I: Monarchy in 2020, AD Infinitum have allowed their creativity to dictate terms, following that album up with Chapter I: Revisited, which was an acoustic take on their debut. While favouring symphonic undertones throughout their career, AD Infinitum have maintained a steady attraction towards the harder side of the spectrum, culminating in Abyss which reveals a whole new side to AD Infinitum's sonic arsenal, refining their sound and expectations to create what is said to be their most dynamic, modern and progressive record to date.HEAVY caught up with drummer Niklas Muller to find out more."First of all, I think the most important part about this album is we stepped away from the symphonic side of things," he measured. "That was a huge part of our music for the first three albums. It was not an initial choice where we said no, we don't want to do it any more, and we will do it with an entire other production, it was more we said we don't wanna have it just for the sake of having it. We just want to see where the music leads us, and it just so happened when we wrote the first songs in our song camp we realised there was not really the need for orchestral elements. We managed to create soundscapes and nice atmospheres without those instruments. We thought it would be too much and over the top to now add the orchestral elements. It was not an initial choice that we step away from symphonic metal, it just happened in the writing process. This is the biggest musical part that changed. On the other hand, I have a feeling that we grew up a little bit (laughs). It's like, when you continue to write music, you change. It feels like we think way, way more about every little part of a song than we did on previous albums. I'm not saying that we didn't think at all about the early music (laughs). It's like we are questioning more on this album. We already did that with Chapter III when we had the songwriting camp… I think this is also the biggest part why we are questioning that much, because we were all in the same room together writing songs, which wasn't the case with Chapter I and Chapter II because we were living so far apart. I think this just led to the next steps."In the full interview, Niklas expressed excitement about sharing the album with their fans and playing it live in Europe and the US, with hopes of eventually performing in Australia. Niklas also discussed the evolution of AD Infinitum's music, particularly the shift away from symphonic elements. We discussed the concept behind the next album trilogy, with Abyss representing a dark state of mind as opposed to the next two, Surface and Elysium, which symbolise healing and happiness. He also discussed the band's creative process, future direction, and the shift away from symphonic metal, but he remained non-committal as to whether the band would travel that path again in the future.Niklas talked about their upcoming tour with Kamelot, Blackbriar and Frozen Crown as well as next year's tour with Eluveitie and Infected Rain, plus more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Interview by Kris PetersMy first introduction to Apocalyptica was in 2007 through the song I'm Not Jesus, which featured Slipknot vocalist Corey Taylor in an even more powerfully destructive performance than usual. And that's saying something. And that, in a nutshell, is the best thing about artists collaborating with different bands, often outside of their comfort zone. It allows music listeners a free pass, if you will, to be open to and listen to music they would normally discount all because another musician they love and respect is singing or playing on a song with them. And so it was with Apocalyptica, who over the years have collaborated with Lacey Mosley (Flyleaf), Brent Smith (Shinedown), Dave Lombardo (Slayer) and Ville Valo (HIM) to name a few.A three-piece instrumental cello band, Apocalyptica started life as a Metallica covers band, so it was only fitting that their 1996 debut album, Plays Metallica By Four Cellos, featured their own versions of Metallica songs.Cello metal, if you will.Since then Apocalyptica have released another nine studio albums, some cello versions of other band's music and others a mixture of covers and originals and some also solely original music, but it was their connection with - or more so their commanding performance of - Metallica songs that has connected Apocalyptica with much of their global fanbase. Some are drawn to the reworkings of heavy metal classics because of the novelty value, some out of curiosity, and most by the fact that their versions and takes on a genre far removed from their own are breathtaking in their sonic beauty and suffocating in their musical density. And so it is that Apocalyptica have returned to where they started for their tenth album, Apocalypotica Plays Metallica Vol 2, which came out on June 7. Featuring cello-driven versions of previously untouchable tracks like The Four Horsemen, Ride The Lightning and Blackened, the biggest - and possibly best - surprise on the album is the use of the actual bassline laid down by Cliff Burton on the original recording of The Call Of Ktulu.HEAVY settled in for a chat with Apocalyptica's bandleader Eicca Toppinen to find out the story behind how that came to be and more."With all of Metallica's involvement in this album, we didn't think about it when we started working on it," he began. "All those ideas started to come up when we were working on the music, for example, The Call Of Ktulu is one of my favourite songs of all time from Metallica because the colours and the vibe of the song has something super powerful. Some years ago I realised that a lot of those sound elements in the song that I always loved and was always fascinated about, I realised they were actually made by bass. Then came the idea wouldn't it be so cool to get that bassline? Last spring I sent a message to Lars Ulrich and I said we're working on this album and I would like to have a call with you because there are a couple of ideas that are rising from the process. I talked to Lars and said, this is probably pretty crazy, but I was thinking we are working on The Call Of Ktulu, and it would be amazing if we could get that, and Lars said 'this is such a great idea. I love that you always have these out-of-the-box ideas, but I have no idea how to make it work' (laughs). Even he was like, that might be difficult. James needs to approve, then Cliff Burton's family needs to approve then we need to figure out what kind of contractual things there are, because the album was released in 1984 and the record company from that time might have some rights on the actual recording and stuff. Then things happened smoothly. I went to Sweden to see Metallica last Summer and was hanging out there all weekend and what happened was really cool. I was invited after the first show into this very casual dinner, and I'm sitting there with my girlfriend and Rob Trujillo is coming in, and he said hey and sat one of the women at our table, and I was sitting with her talking, and it came along super well. Maybe after an hour, hour and a half we were talking about the album and I said about this idea, and it turned out that she was the step-sister of Cliff Burton! And the person who was actually taking care of Cliff Burton's legacy. She loved the idea but said you'll have to ask Lars, and I said I already spoke with Lars, and she said then you have to ask Tony the manager of Metallica and everybody was so excited. Then I talked with everybody and the manager said I need to call a couple of lawyers and figure out the legal side of it and everything just worked out. It was just crazy with all these things. I think the reason why things worked out is we were never going to Metallica and saying we want something off you. We were not asking can we do this, or can you do this? It was more like I was presenting the ideas and saying this would be great if we could do things like James talking and all that stuff, and they just said wow, yeah, this is cool. So I think that was the reason that Metallica got equally excited about what we were doing as we were."In the full interview, Eicca talks about how they chose which singles to release and why, the term cello metal and how it suits what Apocalyptica do, having James Hetfield and Rob Trujillo guest on the album, the 28-year gap between their two Metallica tribute albums and why, making the songs their own, if the new era of Metallica songs are easier to translate than the music from the band's early days, deconstructing a metal track and restructuring it in their own image, the correlation between heavy metal and the cello, why he thinks people gravitate to Apocalyptica's versions of known songs, the fact they are not harshly judged for presenting the songs in a different light, future plans and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

JOB FOR A COWBOY frontman Jonny Davy and EXIT EDEN co-vocalist Anna Brunner join us for this week's edition of The Loaded Radio Podcast This week on the Loaded Radio Podcast Scott Penfold sits down first with JOB FOR A COWBOY vocalist Jonny Davy to discuss the death metal outfit's latest album "Moon Healer". “Moon Healer” is set for release on February 23rd via Metal Blade Records. The release marks JOB FOR A COWBOY‘s first new full-length in a decade! “Moon Healer” is a vivid illustration of what happens when creativity, aggression, and volatility tangle for the first time in years. Like the band's critically adored, 2014-released “Sun Eater” offering, “Moon Healer” is musically multifaceted, unabashedly brutal, and compellingly conceptual. Featuring a newly refreshed and reinspired lineup of frontman and co-founder Jonny Davy, guitarists Tony Sannicandro and Al Glassman, bassist Nick Schendzielos, and drummer (since 2020) Navene Koperweis, the band seamlessly picks up the mantle where JOB FOR A COWBOY‘s “Sun Eater” left off. Compared to past offerings, “Moon Healer” is as bone-crushing as JOB FOR A COWBOY has ever been. But it's more consistent and conceptual, composed with the utmost enthusiasm and confidence. “The evolution of our sound has become a big part of the band,” Davy says. “As we mature as musicians, our tastes and interests naturally expand. With age comes more experience and ideas that we wouldn't have considered in our earlier years.” “Moon Healer” was produced by Jason Suecof (DEATH ANGEL, THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, DEICIDE) at his Audiohammer Studios and is the first JOB FOR A COWBOY album to feature session drummer Navene Koperweis (ex-Animosity). Davy previously worked with Koperweis in the progressive death metal side project FLESHWROUGHT, which released Dementia/Dyslexia through Metal Blade in 2010. Koperweis also worked as a session drummer for MACHINE HEAD and WHITECHAPEL and is currently in the band ENTHEOS, whose third full-length came out on Metal Blade in March 2023. In the second portion of the podcast, Scott sits down with Anna Brunner from EXIT EDEN. Symphonic metal unit EXIT EDEN, consisting of Clémentine Delauney (VISIONS OF ATLANTIS), Anna Brunner (LEAGUE OF DISTORTION) and Marina La Torraca (PHANTOM ELITE) recently released their second album, “Femmes Fatales” via Napalm Records. “Femmes Fatales” includes 12 songs in total — half covers, half original compositions. EXIT EDEN‘s new release follows the band's debut, 2017's “Rhapsodies In Black”, which garnered millions of video views (12 million on EXIT EDEN‘s cover of Bonnie Tyler‘s “Total Eclipse Of The Heart” alone). Previous singles from “Femmes Fatales”, “Run!” (featuring ex-NIGHTWISH bassist/vocalist Marko Hietala) and “Separate Ways” (JOURNEY cover) have already surpassed a million views since their respective releases in October and December 2023. Now performing as a trio, EXIT EDEN‘s new full-length follows the path of its predecessor, as it contains six cover versions of famous cross-generational super-hits, but this time also shines by offering six original compositions. With one exception (“Dying In My Dreams”, co-written by Marina La Torraca),the remaining five original songs were brought to life by Brunner and Hannes Braun (KISSIN' DYNAMITE),who is also responsible for recording, production and mixing, whereas the album was mastered by Jacob Hansen (DELAIN, AMARANTHE, VOLBEAT, DESTRUCTION and many more). Self-confidently leading straight into the tempting world of EXIT EDEN, opening “Femme Fatale”, “Buried In The Past” and “Hold Back Your Fear” conjure a mystical atmosphere with strings and orchestral elements, topped by complementary vocals uniting the sonic diversity of the all-femme trio. “Dying In My Dreams” and album closing “Elysium” set the tone as captivating mid-tempo tracks with intense choruses that speak straight to the heart.

Symphonic metal is a complex form of heavy metal that combines sounds and styles common to a symphony orchestra with soaring vocals, bits of guttural, aggressive drums, and guitars. While bands such as Within Temptation, Nightwish, Delain, and Epica are well-known for this genre, very few Christian bands attempt this style of music.Divine Martyr from Indianapolis, Indiana is one such band that not only performs Christian symphonic metal...they perform it with a degree of excellence that is on par with the European bands who are most often associated with this genre. The music of Divine Martyr passionately expresses that despite the struggles and tribulations in this life, there is hope in Jesus. In this edition of Raven's Heart, meet the members of Divine Martyr and experience their sound which directs the hearts of men to Heaven above. Hosted on Acast. The boys take some time to chat about the HIGHLY anticipated new album from New Jersey's Lorna Shore, Pain Remains... The ALSO take a significant amount of time to talk about the finale of Rings of Power. So, uh, be aware of that I guess.

Music Marketing Manifesto Podcast – Music Marketing Manifesto
In episode #50 of the Music Marketing Manifesto Podcast we are joined by Alexander "Aor" Osipov from the Russian Symphonic Metal band, Imperial Age. Alexander is someone who bought my training program Music Marketing Manifesto a few years back and really ran with the strategies he learned. In a fairly short amount of time he was able to take his popular, but financially struggling band and turn them into a thriving success; bringing in a healthy six figures in music revenue each year. When the war between Russia and Ukraine broke out he was one of the first people I thought of. However I was afraid to reach out for fear that even a conversation about the war could create problems for him.I was relieved, and incredibly humbled, when a week or so ago Alexander reached out to tell me that thanks to what he learned in Music Marketing Manifesto - and the overseas and recurring revenue his band now brings in - they were able to flee Russia and move to Turkey; with a hope of eventually relocating to the USA or the UK. I asked Alexander if he'd be willing to sit in on the MMM Podcast and share their extremely relevant story, and walk us through exactly how his band markets their music. This is their story.
