This week a continuation of our series called “In The Shadow Of…”, where we compare obscure bands to a mainstream act. This is not about copycats, but more about artists with similar vibes, sharing a sonic landscape, or whose songwriting and playing styles are sympatico. This is another band that is near and dear to both of you humble hosts. A band whose unique harmonies and awesome riffs inspired both hosts to pick up guitars and start singing; the amazing Seattle grunge gods ALICE IN CHAINS! Join us as we discover other bands influenced and inspired by AIC's revolutionary game-changing music. What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. “I'm the asshole” because my Thanksgiving food was fuckin terrible. People love to argue with me, even when they don't really have a counterpoint. Kidney stones update. This week: a sister-cast episode to a series we have called the Inbetweeners where we on the bands straddling the 80s and 90s in rock n' punk n' metal. This is more specific to metal in the 90s after feeling the impact of the overwhelming shifting of sounds during the decade. Metal became a dirty word by the mid-90s as grunge and alternative took over the rock world, but a new movement in the metal genre blended all of these influences with the heavy. Thus, we give you - 90s Alternative Metal! What's this InObscuria thing? Our podcast exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This week we cover mostly bands that have been forgotten including some bands that we played early on in the podcast. The transition from the heavy metal 80s to the punk-edged alternative of the 90s was a time like no other, and metal bands that began during this time put it all in an industrial-strength metal blender. Hope ya dig! Join Alan and I as we catch up from the most recent international shows were for Life of Agony. Alan and I also talk about his upcoming adult coloring books, and how it is to create a blank canvas that allows for others to come in with their creativity. Alan shares how cool it is to see how fans choose to color in his art, and how it maybe inspires him to do something beyond his own ideas. Alan also shares how he got into art, and how his musical career is really one he fell into, and how he has been doing both while out on the road with LOA, and then took over once LOA went on a bit of a hiatus. We also get into some horror stuff, how we feel horror is starting to break into the mainstream again and how that helps push he genre forward. How the horror/art space isn't as dissimilar as you'd think from the music world that Alan is most known for and more in this chat Intro Music: “Remember “This Night” (Podcast Edit) by Chae Hawk "Pretty Lights" by Heartsick Show Sponsors: Rockabilia (www.rockabilia.com) USE OUR CODE BREWTALLY AND GET 10% OFF YOUR TOTAL ORDER!! In this interview, Joshua Toomey welcomes Alan Robert, bassist for Life of Agony and accomplished artist, to discuss his creative projects. Alan shares insights about his latest endeavor, an official Beetlejuice coloring book in collaboration with Warner Brothers, which coincides with the release of the new Beetlejuice movie. He talks about the process of drawing scenes from the movie and how much fun it was to immerse himself in Tim Burton's world. Alan also reflects on his artistic journey, from illustrating other projects like the Universal Monsters coloring book to his early experiences learning from legendary comic book artist Walter Simonson during his time at the School of Visual Arts. He recalls how comic conventions were much smaller in the early days and how breaking into the comic industry back then was tough. He shares how he eventually balanced music and art, creating iconic band merchandise and album covers for groups like Black Sabbath and Pantera. The conversation also touches on Alan's roots, his longtime friendship with Biohazard's Evan Seinfeld, and how watching them succeed inspired his own musical career. Throughout the interview, Alan discusses the evolution of creating art, how digital tools have revolutionized the process, and the importance of meeting deadlines when working on big projects like Beetlejuice. Alan discusses the creative process behind his comic work, drawing inspiration from music, like Pantera's Cemetery Gates, which influenced his short story. He also highlights his collaboration with Z2 Comics and other projects like the Type O Negative graphic novel. Alan reflects on balancing his artistic endeavors with touring, recalling his earlier days of drawing comics backstage during tours in the early 2010s. He contrasts that with his recent approach, where he focuses on intricate artwork, like The Beauty of Horror, while at home and reserves touring for music. Alan also reminisces about his time at the School of Visual Arts and shares a fun experience watching Keanu Reeves live on The Late Show. He appreciates the balance of his current life, splitting time between touring and comics. He mentions recent recording sessions at a legendary NYC studio, hinting at exciting music releases soon. Finally, he touches on the importance of creator-owned comic projects and his freedom to expand his characters across multiple platforms.Joshua Toomey on Facebook/Twitter @talktoomeytalk Support Toomey on Patreon www.patreon.com/talktoomey Concept Cafes Coffee https://www.conceptcafes.com Subscribe to Talk Toomey on YouTube for in-depth interviews with the most exciting artists in aggressive music, deep dives into iconic artists' discography, and more. #talktoomey #lifeofagony #coloringbook #beetlejuice #bassplayer

It's been 30 years, Slackers! After watching a studio performance by WEEZER, celebrating the 30th anniversary of their amazing debut record, I looked into what other music dropped in 1994. Holy cow, that was a pretty good year for music! Records from RANCID, THE OFFSPRING, and GREEN DAY all came out in 1994, moving past the “grunge/punk” aesthetic into the pop-punk era that would drive the later shift into emo.Under the mainstream radar, were bands like BLACK TRAIN JACK, DOG EAT DOG, and LIFE OF AGONY, all on ROADRUNNER RECORDS, while huge legacy acts like THE ROLLING STONES, JOHNNY CASH, and TOM PETTY all had releases during the year. And not to be thrown to the wayside, grunge supergroups SOUNDGARDEN, PEARL JAM, and NIRVANA all had multiplatinum records. 1994 was also the year that KURT COBAIN took his own life, with “MTV Unplugged in New York” released posthumously. Basically, 1994 was a great year for music. And a little shoutout to my buddy Coop up there in Heaven - I told you WEEZER was a better band than PAVEMENT.

We talk of course about all of those bands as well as his views on the current state of Life Of Agony and some of the issues he's dealt with, with certain members of the band and so much more. This was one of the longest interviews I think we've done so far. Sal was a great guest and we can't thank him enough for coming on Rat Salad Review to tell his story. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/rat-salad-review/message

Legend... it's a word that gets played out, overused, and misappropriated all the time. It also completely applies to my guest today, the most lovely chap, Tony Maddocks.Tony once fronted the mid 90's apex predators, Above All, and then the band mysteriously disappeared. When the dust settled 26 years later, I got an email asking if I'd be interested in talking to Tony about a new Above All EP, out now on all major platforms.Of course I said yes, and the rest is history. Our conversation today was light on my end and heavy on stories from Tony himself and if you're watching this on video, you're pretty going to see me smile for 60 minutes, because well.... I'm talking to a legend. This is my chat with the great frontman and founding father of metallic hardcore... at least the way I know it. This is Tony Maddocks. Connecticut was a Ska powerhouse, with a strong Hardcore scene in tandem with the wider NYHC scene. We talk of the influence of the DC punk rock scene throughout the Mid-Atlantic, with particular props to Ian MacKaye of MINOR THREAT & FUGAZI. We don't forget seminal hardcore band, DC's BAD BRAINS, or NY legends CRO-MAGS. You'll also hear how Carlos and I discovered "our" band, by mistake. Or rather, with BiG MiSTAKE - BLACK TRAIN JACK! We delve into the CT ska scene and bands like SPRING HEELED JACK USA and JC SUPERSKA, along with Boston favorites like the MiIGHTY MIGHTY BOSSTONES and BIM SKALA BIM. Rob Castoria (AKA Big Rob) and I became friends through Instagram. When I saw he was in one of my favorite NYHC bands Merauder, I reverted back to being a kid again, as I reminisced of having discovered them for the first time when I heard “Find My Way” on a Century Media Records compilation. The more I got to know him, we discussed having him on the podcast to talk about his story, which I'm honored to have done so. Rob started playing in bands in the 1980s with Metalstorm, when metal ruled in venues on Long Island and in Brooklyn/Queens at venues such as Sundance and L'amour, and when hardcore ruled Sunday matinees at CBGB. Before that, he meticulously practiced his instrument, always reaching for self-improvement. It's true what they say - you never stop learning, and Rob is proof of that. In the last 10 years, Rob formed Maniac Rise, and released EPs on various streaming platforms. They were also invited to participate on a tribute album to The Godfather of Metal (and the God of Metal Riffs) Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath called “The Great Lefty,” in which they contributed “Time Is Mine” (released in 2000 on Iommi's debut solo CD “Iommi” with Phil Anselmo of Pantera/Down/Superjoint on vocals). To keep Rob's name relevant in the NY music scene and build momentum for Maniac Rise, he performed various “shreds” throughout NYC and Long Island, where he was spotlighted as a soloist during setups and breakdowns for performing acts. Now, Rob is one of two guitarists in the band that kept crossover hardcore alive and well in the 90s - Merauder. On top of that, Rob is also the tech for Joey Z., guitarist of one of the most important bands of the 90s that are still going today - Life Of Agony. Rob is one of those guitar players that people NEED to hear. On top of being a great musician, he's a great guy. And I'm happy to bring him to my platform to discuss his experience, his opinions, and his goals. With the pandemic subsiding, it's time for Rob to get back to doing what the good lord put him on this earth to do - shred guitars, and melt faces in the process. SPECIAL EDITION NOTES: Rob and I talk about many things here - division in communities, the Tompkins Square Park concert, the whole pandemic, people's right to choose their own path, how social media can be used for good and bad, and more. Skateboard Marketing Ltd. Company Overview: Skateboard Marketing Ltd. has been at the forefront of independent metal radio promotion for the past 30 years since forming in 1991. The company has worked with legendary rock and metal heavyweights such as Black Sabbath, Motorhead, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, Pantera, Soilwork, Testament, Morbid Angel, Black Label Society and Kid Rock, among countless others. Skateboard Marketing operates within North America and is located in New York. Their concept is to get radio airplay in any place that has metal or rock programming. They still believe in artist development and building a fan base for the unknown artist. Every band has their time to shine, but that takes artist development. Skateboard Marketing Ltd owner, Munsey Ricci, is a former PolyGram Records executive who was the Director of National Metal Promotion from 1989-1991 and created the first metal department for the label and all affiliated labels, including Mercury, Polydor, RooArt, and London Records. Ricci also worked for the famed Combat/In-Effect Records in Hollis, Queens. Ricci was also on the editorial staff and collated the magazine for CMJ Media and a former syndicated radio programmer prior to PolyGram Records. Ricci spent 5 years as MD/PD for his college station WQCC while attending college. Covering the entire spectrum of radio with syndicated, satellite, commercial, and college metal. Skateboard Marketing covers over 350 stations nationally for the US and Canada. This includes all the syndicated, commercial metal and rock specialty shows with college and public radio. "It's any outlet where a record can be heard" Artist development starts on the street, in someone's bedroom on their stereo, or even a fan listening to something new in their car. Today a new band will have 20 fans, tomorrow they will have 50. It's all a stepping stone to bring something cool to the masses. It all applies to heritage artists as well. The only difference is they sold 2 million records to go with it. It's about creating the new fan whether it's for Motorhead and Black Sabbath, or for new artists such as Misery Kills. The company's staple roster consists of, Overkill, Testament, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Exodus, Death Angel, Soilwork, Biohazard, Ozzy Osbourne, Doro Pesch, and Sepultura It's a huge pleasure to be graced by talent on all levels. There is nothing better than getting on the phones in the morning and "Making something from nothing" Music is in the blood of every band, industry executive and fan. The companies office is based 25 minutes east of Manhattan, in Neighboring Valley Stream. They have a staff of 2 people covering syndicated, commercial , and college radio, as well as social media on board. New York-based radio promotion powerhouse Skateboard Marketing Ltd., headed by music industry veteran Munsey Ricci, is celebrating its 30th anniversary of taking heavy metal and hard rock music to the airwaves. “It's been 30 years already,” Ricci says. “Time seems to fly when you're having fun. I've been blessed and graced to have the opportunity to work with the artist roster we have. Every morning I get up and still live to walk into the office and do this gig. I just don't get tired of it and need more!” Founded in 1991 by the former PolyGram Records executive, Skateboard Marketing Ltd. quickly established itself as the leader in radio and artist development with a focus on all formats of aggressive music for three decades. Love of music, longstanding relationships and profound respect from colleagues and artists have earned the company a reputation as the go-to company to for national radio promotion in North America. “Munsey and Skateboard Marketing do what they do because they LOVE IT,” says SiriusXM's Jose “Metal Ambassador” Mangin. “There's no one in the world that is as seasoned and dedicated to the art of metal promotion. I've been helping Munsey spread the good gospel of metal for 25 years, and we're both just getting started! Congrats on 30 f'in years of dominance!” Syndicated radio host and author Full Metal Jackie adds, “Munsey is integral to the heavy music scene. He carries the torch proudly and at this point he is basically a de facto member of most of your favorite metal bands. Cheers Munsey & Skateboard.” These sentiments are echoed by the artist's Skateboard Marketing Ltd. has represented, with many noting the integral part the company has played in their success. “Skateboard Marketing has been part of my team for 20 years now,” says Megadeth bassist David Ellefson. “They understand and connect with my fans and record buying customers which makes the business of music that much better and easier. Happy 30th Skateboard and thanks for all you do!” Says Overkill vocalist Bobby Blitz, “Congratulations to Munsey and Skateboard on 30 years of keeping the airwaves chock full of the heaviest metal! For decades now we call him the 6th member in the Overkill camp, as he has gone above and beyond to help bring our craft to those who crave it. Happy anniversary Skateboard, from Chaly and the boys!” Singerman Entertainment's Todd Singerman notes, “Skateboard Marketing, under the enthusiastic stewardship of Munsey Ricci, has helped consistently propel Motörhead's music to the ears and hearts of thousands upon thousands of ears for over three decades. Munsey remains that rare combination of class and action.” Add Wendy Dio, “Munsey Ricci and Skateboard Marketing have supported every Dio record throughout Ronnie's career and continue to support us.” While Director of National Metal Radio Promotion at PolyGram Records, Ricci created the first metal radio department for the label and all of its affiliates, including Mercury Records, Polydor Records, RooArt and London Records, where the artist roster included bands like Mortal Sin, Onslaught, Yngwie Malmsteen, Kiss, Doro Pesch, The Scorpions, Rush, Tony MacAlpine, and Vinny Moore. Ricci also previously worked for CMJ Media and Combat/In-Effect Records, and programmed radio for five years prior to his label stint, learning and working next to some of the most influential people in the radio promotion world and leading to the success of Skateboard Marketing Ltd. “I've had the pleasure of knowing Munsey for close to 25 years,” says Rob Rush, Program Director/PM Drive Jock 94.3 The Shark Long Island. “He is a consummate professional and has always gone above and beyond for the bands that he promotes, and the radio stations that play his bands. He is a true class act and I'm proud to call him one of my best friends! Here's to 30 more years of Munsey and Skateboard Marketing!!!” SiriusXM Volume's “TrunkNation” host Eddie Trunk conquers. “I've known and worked with Munsey for all 30 years of Skateboard Marketing and beyond,” he says. “He's always had a great passion for rock and metal music and all the projects he works. All the best for the next 30 to all at Skateboard!” Seeing a void for heavy music in the radio trades, Ricci launched Metal Contraband in 2016. Metal Contraband, in conjunction with Radio Contraband, fills that gap as a destination for labels, management and artists looking for accurate information, including a metal chart consisting of commercial, syndication as well as large college stations, a metal news section for up-to-date news on tours and festivals, ad dates and street dates. Also included is an overall release schedule for metal add dates at radio. Metal Contraband has become the most reliable source to gauge the success of a record at radio. Adds Joey Z of longtime Skateboard client Life Of Agony, “It's hard to believe that Munsey and the team at Skateboard Marketing have been grinding it out for all of us for 30 years. Life Of Agony is so grateful for all the help and support the team has given us throughout the years... We wish them continued success for at least another 30!!” “Munsey is the only metal radio game in town,” says Adrenaline PR's Maria Ferrero. “Period.” The company's roster has ranged from the smallest to the biggest heavy metal and hard rock bands. Its staple roster consists of Motörhead, Overkill, Testament, Judas Priest, Ronnie James Dio, Black Sabbath, Exodus, Death Angel, Soilwork, Parkway Drive, Ozzy Osbourne, Sepultura, Soulfly, and many labels including Napalm, Nuclear Blast, Century Media, E- One Entertainment, Warner Music, BMG, Sony, Pavement, Metalville, Spinefarm, Fearless and Universal. Life Of Agony founder Mina Caputo stops by Inside Music to discuss her new solo record and much, much more. The goal of every musician is to develop a singular voice. Being the best of all-time barely compares to being your true self. Authenticity is something you cannot package and sell, but it does more for your soul than analytics or sales figures ever can. It's the kind of thing people spend their entire lives pursuing, and even then, only a select few pull it off. Mina Caputo is a revolutionary voice in rock. For more than two decades, Mina has consistently released engaging and challenging music that is hard to classify yet fiercely relatable. She touches on the pains of existence without wallowing in the despair of being. She writes songs that tackle the topics that matter to her, and she's historically unwilling to compromise. Best known as the voice behind Life Of Agony, Mina is also a celebrated solo artist with numerous albums. These works provide Mina space to further explore her artistic capabilities while giving fans a steady stream of fresh content whenever LoA takes a break. It's rare to find anyone capable of making two or more projects work, but Mina makes it seem easy. Recently, Mina stopped by Inside Music to discuss her career, her critics, and how she became a vocal supporter of doing whatever you want with the limited time we have on this planet. Some may consider her views to be incendiary, but they are true to her feelings, which is what Mina aspires to achieve in every act of self-expression. Enjoy.
