College students almost certainly lost ground academically during the pandemic. But do we know how much? And what should colleges do about it? This week's episode explores a free report Inside Higher Ed published in December, “Back on Track: Helping Students Recover From COVID-19 Learning Disruption.” It examines the available evidence about how the pandemic affected students' educational paths, and finds, somewhat unsurprisingly, that most colleges really don't know whether their students suffered what in the K-12 context is often called “learning loss” or “learning disruption.” But that doesn't mean they aren't adapting their practices and policies in areas such as placement, instruction, grading and assessment to help students make up whatever ground they've lost. Participating in this discussion are Natasha Jankowski, a higher education and assessment consultant and former executive director of the National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment; Matthew Gunkel, chief online learning and technology officer for the University of Missouri System; and Michael Hale, vice president of education at VitalSource. Hosted by Inside Higher Ed Co-founder and Editor Doug Lederman. This episode is made possible by the support of VitalSource.com.
This special episode was put together at the 11th hour when the OSHA announcement was delivered. Former Vice President Joe Biden announces his intent to utilize OSHA to inspect and enforce a vaccine mandate to all employers over 100 employees. The other option is a weekly negative COVID test. We're discussing the mechanics and feasibility of such an enormous endeavor and do our best to separate the policy from the politics. For instance:What about remote employees? What about the reporting responsibility? What happens when COVID cases still occur in the workplace? Will the "test option" be removed? How does OSHA choose to audit? What is an "ETS" anyway? Can A&M possibly win on the road at Auburn in 2022?Source: https://www.science.org/content/article/having-sars-cov-2-once-confers-much-greater-immunity-vaccine-vaccination-remains-vitalSource: https://news.emory.edu/stories/2021/07/covid_survivors_resistance/index.htmlSource: https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2021.01.29.21250653v1KD's LinkedIn post

Not all the news coming out of this madness is bad. Sam Herring, Vice President and General Manager of Intrepid by VitalSource talks about how this current crisis can be a time of resourcefulness and innovation in the workplace learning space. He illustrated these thoughts with how one of largest not‐for‐profit, academic health systems in the United States built and deployed a remote learning system to train the army of nurses battling COVID-19 during those first weeks in March:“Within a day of selecting the Intrepid platform, the health system’s learning team created an initial course prototype, within four days learning pathways were created and audited by nursing leaders, and within eleven days the complete training solution was launched across the entire health system. The initial audience includes approximately 3000 nurses, LPNs, and hospital support staff, and may expand to additional groups.”Listen to this episode of Remote Possibilities for more insights related to the new realities of distance learning.
Listen, to learn from Sam Herring, CEO & Co-Founder of Seattle-based ed tech leader Intrepid by VitalSource on how researching the individual stories of Wild West characters shaped a vision for educational tech achievement; why there really won’t be a Dr Evil with a pinkie in his mouth controlling the Learning software market; where the $40 billion that got invested in ed tech these past 20 years really went; why not a lot of the ‘thousand ed tech’ flower start-ups will ever probably bloom; why setting up a content library really isn’t all you gotta do to become a good CLO; why small-bore thinking sucks; and finally, wow, platform/services, LMS/LXP… is that still the right question if we drop a recession on it all?

Recent research from CLO Media shows that the number one performance metric reported by Chief Learning Officers for learning initiatives is employee engagement. But is this the right metric? Does engagement truly encapsulate how people learn, the impact on the business, and other critical factors? To answer this question, host Ben Eubanks sits down with Sam Herring, VP and General Manager for Intrepid by VitalSource. Sam has a long track record in learning technology and services and a well-rounded outlook on the profession. In the conversation, Ben and Sam talk about the pros and cons of engagement as a learning metric, how mission-focused learning can lead to better results, and the importance of learning journeys. If your team is thinking about how learning can partner more closely with the business this year and in the future, Sam's insightful takeaways at the end of the show offer some spectacular guidance to that end. We need validation. Leave a review: iTunes | Stitcher Medical School is hard work. Between the information to memorize and the concepts to understand, along with the time you'll spend on it all, it seems ripe for technological intervention. Can an app really help you memorize anatomy? Can a website really help you make medical decisions? Can a table really help you get organized? We recently surveyed students here at the UI Carver College of Medicine and on Reddit, asking them for recommendations and tips on using tech during medical school. Listen in as Cole Cheney, Aline Sandouk, John Pienta, Lisa Wehr, and Greg Woods wade through the results. While there are certainly plenty of apps out there to try, in general the info we got boiled down to a few major app winners and platform leaders, and some others to try, too. Because what it all comes down to is there's more than one way to study medicine, and you'll just have to try them to see which one is best for you. For seasoned med students these apps and sites will be familiar. For those who' are looking f or alternatives, our discussion may help. Eventually, your app’s gonna fall out of the top 10 and top 100 and sales are gonna drop off and so you have to do it all over again and get a big launch. So, the subscriptions, the hope is you get a little more recurring revenue,
