For decades, going to college has been seen as a reliable path to good jobs and economic success in the United States. But a recent Indeed survey reported that over half of Gen Z respondents beg to differ. As tuition prices continue to rise and the Trump administration takes aim at higher education institutions, is the way we view college changing? On the show today, Bryan Alexander, a higher education writer and senior scholar at Georgetown University, explains why college is still a worthy investment for most students, why more people are considering certificate programs and technical schools, and how President Trump's attacks on elite universities are a risk to higher education as a whole. Then, Kimberly breaks down the difference between the reconciliation bill and government spending bills in Congress. In the first episode of the Winter 2023 Listen & Learn series, hosts Dr. Matthew Worwood and Dr. Cyndi Burnett explore the theme of disruption in education, drawing from an interview clip with futurist Bryan Alexander. The clip, recorded in spring 2021, focuses on the impact of generative AI on the future of learning and the potential consequences for educators. As they dissect the interview, Cyndi shares a personal journey, initially fearing self-driving cars but ultimately embracing new technology, emphasizing the importance of gradually embracing change. The hosts offer a tip for educators: start small. Encouraging educators to experiment with generative AI in manageable ways, such as creating new prompts or course titles, they highlight the significance of reducing ambiguity and developing familiarity with the technology. The episode also introduces a special giveaway for listeners, involving uncovering a code word across all the Listen & Learn series episodes during winter 2023 to win a prize.  Eager to bring more creativity into your school district? This episode of the Campus podcast comes as record temperatures beat down through the northern hemisphere summer, with wildfires engulfing Greece and Spain, and deadly floods engulf India. With the UK recently approving new oil and gas licences, it's easy to feel that reversing the climate crisis is a lost cause. However, our guests both offer elements of hope despite the bleak outlook. Bryan Alexander is a senior scholar at Georgetown University and a futurist. His latest book, Universities on Fire, implores universities to wake up and realise that they can make a profound change in the climate crisis. And he is cautiously optimistic about their ability to do that. Our second guest is Sebastian Pfautsch, an associate professor in urban planning and management in the School of Social Sciences at Western Sydney University, with a background in tree physiology and, of all things, interior design. His multidisciplinary research is built around the complex issue of urban heat. He talks about some of the actions WSU, which has topped the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings for the past two years, has taken to meet the SDGS and what Australia's experience of extreme heat can teach the rest of the world about cooling their cities.

Bryan Alexander is an award–winning, internationally known futurist, researcher, writer, speaker, consultant, and teacher, working in the field of higher education's future. He's the author of the recent book Universities On Fire: Higher Education in Climate Crisis which forms the foundation of this episode. Bryan joins host Mike Palmer in a conversation about how to use futures thinking to explore climate-related scenarios with special attention to higher education. We begin by reflecting back on Bryan's previous appearances on the podcast back in 2020 soon after the release of his book Academia Next: The Futures of Higher Education. Among the scenarios in that book, he explored how a pandemic might affect higher education before Covid hit. From there we touch on his recent blog post looking at the new Apple+ series Extrapolations. As we bring up examples from science fiction and its sub-genre of climate fiction, Bryan describes the power of scenario-baseed thinking in preparing ourselves for uncertain futures. We dig into where higher education may be heading and get Bryan's initial thoughts on generative AI and how it interrelates with the climate crisis megatrend. What does it take to get 4 ag podcasters together to record a podcast together? A lot of prep and planning and months of advance notice apparently. Jared Luhman, Bryan Alexander, and Clay Conry are hosts of the Herd Quitter, Ranching Reboot, and Working Cows podcasts, respectively. We had the idea of the 4 of us getting together and recording a podcast. It took several months for us to make it work but man am I glad we did. We started off chatting about our regenerative ag journeys. About how context matters so much in any operation. We then chat a bit about what podcasting looks like for us and the benefits and enjoyment and education we have obtained from podcasting. We also chat a bit about the state of the American food system and where we see it going. What a great episode. I hope you enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed recording. We hope to have another episode together, this time all of us being in the same location, sometime soon.

How has the COVID-19 pandemic and the other upheaval of the last couple of years changed the outlook for colleges, their students and their employees? Bryan Alexander is a writer, author, teacher and “futurist.” He wrote the 2020 book Academia Next and hosts his own series of video conversations, The Future Trends Forum. In this week's episode of The Key podcast, he first explains the work of professional futurists, and how they differ from other kinds of analysts who operate as if they owned crystal balls. Then Alexander explores a wide range of topics about how the COVID-19 pandemic, the drive for racial justice and other recent phenomena might affect the next few years in higher education, touching on technology, the curriculum, and his current focus, environmental sustainability.  This episode is sponsored by Pearson Inclusive Access. Mike Palmer returns from SXSW EDU to reflect on what it was like producing Trending in Ed back in early 2020 when the Covid-19 pandemic was just hitting. Through excerpts from three episodes of Trending in Ed, we transport ourselves back to that challenging time to help put the past into perspective as we prepare to lean into the future. We begin by hearing sound from an episode with Dan Strafford and Mike in early February where we speculate about what's happening in Wuhan, China and how it may have a broader impact across the globe. Then we hear some of Mike's March 2020 interview with Bryan Alexander, the noted futurist who famously explored the possible impact of a plague on higher ed in his book, Academia Next: The Futures of Higher Education. It was zeitgeisty then and it still is now. Mike concludes with sound from his interview with Angela Siefer, the Executive Director of the National Digital Inclusion Alliance later in March as the first wave was taking root and Angela and team were rapidly shifting practices to respond to the critical public health aspects of digital access and inclusion. It's a thought-provoking retrospective you won't want to miss. Subscribe to Trending in Education wherever you get your podcasts. What does the future of creativity and innovation look like and how do we get students involved? In this episode of Fueling Creativity, Dr. Cyndi Burnett and Dr. Matthew Worwood speak with Jonathan Nalder, a globally awarded innovator in education and Chief Futures Officer at STEM Punks, about the best practices for integrating digital tools and forward thinking in learning environments.  Listen in as Jonathan shares his thoughts on why future trends are important in education, how STEM is connected to creativity, and the trends you can expect in education in the next 10-15 years. They also discuss the role of empathy in design thinking, how he and STEM Punks are preparing students to work in collaboration with machines and AI, and the strategies he uses in project-based learning environments to get students thinking about potential human problems of the future. Then, he sheds light on his program, First School on Mars, and how it has grown over the years. “Instead of going, “How are we going to solve radiation in space?” You know, really hard science… What we do to flip that instead is... “Okay, if humans are going to Mars, they're going to be away from Earth for 3-4 years minimum. So, what kind of base are you going to design that will mean the humans are happy living away?”” - Jonathan Nalder   Jonathan's Tips for Parents & Teachers: Make time for exploring in the classroom and give your students agency within that. A huge thank you to the OE Global community for awarding our project a 2021 Open Education Award of Excellence for Reuse/ Remix/ Adaptation. for the 25 Years of EdTech: The Serialized Audio Version. From the OE Global Awards team: The award was given to the project in the “Open Reuse/Remix/Adaptation” category and, according to the adjudicators, the project is an outstanding example of the power of OER reuse for the following reasons; Remixing the physical book into an audiobook has increased accessibility by providing the text in an alternate format. Drawing together the open education community around the reading of the text sparked the companion “Between the Chapters” podcast, providing a deeper dive and critical analysis by experts into the topic of each chapter. This has added an additional layer of richness to the original book.  The weekly podcast release schedule, and accompanying critical analysis created a fundamentally new way to experience the book – slower and in bitesize chunks.  Each episode of the main recording or the companion podcast also now exists as an OER available for future use / reuse. This was a project that could not have happened without an openly licensed book so thank you @mweller & @au_press -- thank you so much! This is just a quick thank you speech (in podcast format, of course) from Laura and Clint. And a huge thank you to all the volunteers who voiced and/or guested as part of the project.
