This episode quacks me up. Fisheries management to produce quality fishing often requires actions that are counterproductive to attracting migratory ducks and vice versa. But in this episode, we'll talk about some ways that you might be able to have the best of both worlds. Wes sits down with two leading experts in the duck realm, and they brainstorm on what can be done to bring more ducks to a small pond without necessarily hurting fishing opportunities. Any you'll receive wonderful egg-splanantion on the intricacies of duck biology, including how to deal with pesky resident geese. If you migrate to the link and listen to podcast, I promise I will quit quacking duck puns. Do you have questions or comments? Follow the Fish University Facebook community and chat with Wes or suggest future episodes!
I started fishing at an early while growing up on the windswept rock of Iceland. My parents often joke that they didn't get to see much of me during the warmer months, as any small stream or ditch would captivate my attention for weeks on end. When I was six years old, I received a fly rod for Christmas and started tying flies with materials from pulled apart shoelaces and pillows, and the addiction we all know as fly fishing officially took hold. When my mom and I moved to California in 2005, I started bringing a 6-piece rod to school everyday since it fit in my backpack, and I would take the bus and explore the warm water ponds and freshwater creeks in the area. This was my first introduction to the fisheries of the Central Coast. I started guiding during the summer of 2014, in the West Rangá, one of Iceland's most productive salmon rivers, and home to the most beautiful brown trout in the world. I managed to work my way into the guiding community by starting as a dishwasher when I was 17, and fishing during my off time, and it didn't take long for my intense enthusiasm to pay off as I started filling in for other guides and in no time had a summer schedule filled with clients. Spending my fall, winter and spring on the Central Coast of California has allowed me to fish over 300 days a year for most of my adult life, and I have explored much of what this area has to offer, and now guide here for bass, carp, surf perch and striped bass. This area has some awesome fishing in some of the most scenic areas anywhere, with the most consistently mild weather you can ask for. Whether you want to stalk carp in ankle deep water on the freshwater flats, or cast little sand crab imitations into the surf for perch, the Central Coast offers a year round fishery that should not be taken for granted, and should be utilized. I love sharing my love for the sport, the philosophy behind fly fishing, and creating awesome memories on the water. I am a Sage, Redington, and RIO pro guide, as well as a Fishpond, Simms, and Firehole hooks pro guide and fly tier. I work with Central Coast Fly Fishing fly shop in Carmel, California, and I am an American Carp Society Official Guide. Look forward to seeing you out on the water! Learn more about your ad choices. Stream access rights and regulations in the United States vary throughout the country, and depending on where exactly you're fishing, the laws dealing with how you can enter a riverbed or step into the water can be wildly different. The subject is a complicated one, and with a growing number of anglers and a continued increase in the popularity of fishing, the stream access issue has dramatically heated up over the past several years. In the midst of the continuing and heated battle for public access and fishing rights throughout the US, a company called Rare Waters is offering what they believe is a unique option to diversify angler access. With the Rare Waters model, individual anglers can secure river access to private property through an “Air-BNB-like” pay-to-play platform. They've created a network with property owners – primarily and initially in the US West – who are willing – for a fee – to grant access to anglers looking for both solitude and exclusive access. And while Rare Waters is not buying up properties and converting public waters into private waters, a lot of anglers nonetheless have very strong opinions on public access and the pay-to-access scenarios. In this episode, Waypoints host Jim Klug is joined by RJ Hosking and Brendan Stucky of Rare Waters for a discussion about stream access, private property rights, the history of private “fishing clubs,” and the effects of increased angling pressure on our rivers and streams.- View all podcast episodes by going to the WAYPOINTS podcast page- WAYPOINTS is brought to you by our friends at Fishpond. At more than 850,000 square miles in size with a total population of less than 57,000 people, Greenland is the world's largest island. While more than 80% of the country is covered with ice on a year-round basis, the summer months for the coastal areas bring ice-free arctic tundra, crystal-clear conditions on freestone rivers, and incredible numbers of sea-run Arctic Char. This episode of Waypoints – recorded on location in Greenland during a recent ten day trip – focuses on two different locations and operations: Camp North on the Eqalugsugssuit River, and Erfalik Lodge on the Erfalik River. Waypoints host Jim Klug talks with Thomas Sobirk – the founder of Fly Fish Greenland – about fishing for sea-run char, the characteristics of the rivers, seasons in Greenland, flies and equipment, travel logistics, landscapes, the history of the operation, and more. This is one of the most exciting new options in the entire world of adventure and destination angling – ideal for those that love remote locations, rugged landscapes, and rivers that are totally and completely off the grid.- View all podcast episodes by going to the WAYPOINTS podcast page- Visit our Greenland page- WAYPOINTS is brought to you by our friends at Fishpond. There's no question that Patagonia is one of the premier freshwater fly fishing destinations in the world – a dynamic, one-of-a-kind region in South America that is home to dozens of world-class lodges, experienced and professional guides, and more rivers, streams, and lakes than can possibly be fished in a lifetime. The options and choices are both plentiful and varied, however, which is why deciding exactly where, when, and how to fish Patagonia can at times be confusing. This is especially true when initially choosing between Chile and Argentina. To discuss the many differences between the two countries – and to talk Patagonia in general – we're joined on this episode by Jack Porter, Yellow Dog Flyfishing's Program Director for South America. Jack has lived in Argentina, worked at several lodges in Patagonia, and – during his time at Yellow Dog – assisted thousands of anglers with planning trips to one of the most incredible fly fishing regions on the planet.- View all podcast episodes by going to the WAYPOINTS podcast page- Visit our Argentina and Chile pages- WAYPOINTS is brought to you by our friends at Fishpond. In the spring of 2023, Montana's media started to highlight the fact that wild trout populations in Montana's Jefferson Basin – an area that includes the world-famous Big Hole, Ruby, Beaverhead and Jefferson Rivers – were in severe distress. Legendary for cold-water fisheries that have historically supported an abundance of wild trout, the rivers in Southwest Montana are currently experiencing what some are calling a population-level collapse. Is it too late to save Southwest Montana's wild fish numbers and fix are rivers, or is there still hope for the near future when it comes to our fisheries resources? That is the question that needs to be asked and answered. SAVE WILD TROUT is an organization that was launched to address this very crisis: a coalition of anglers, river advocates, concerned citizens, businesses, guides, and outfitters that have come together with the focused mission of protecting wild trout for the benefit of all. In this episode of Waypoints, Jim is joined by two founding members of SAVE WILD TROUT: Guy Alsentzer and Wade Fellin – two individuals who know a thing or two about the rivers of Southwest Montana. Guy is the Executive Director and Founder of Upper Missouri Waterkeeper, and Wade is a guide, lodge owner and outfitter on the Big Hole River.- View all podcast episodes by going to the WAYPOINTS podcast page- WAYPOINTS is brought to you by our friends at Fishpond. This was a four percent increase from 2021. The same report also noted that the Hispanic population going fishing has increased 45% over the past decade. Also, the number of female anglers increased nearly by 4 million people since 2012, from 16 to 19.8 million. Umpqua Feather Merchants is one of the biggest names in the fly fishing industry: a manufacturing powerhouse when it comes to innovative and effective flies, leader, tippet, premium hooks, and more. In this episode of Waypoints, we talk with Umpqua's Director of Marketing, Russ Miller, to discuss the company's position at the forefront of innovation for high-quality flies and accessories. When anglers grab a handful of patterns from the fly bins of a specialty fly shop, most are unaware of WHERE exactly those flies came from: how they were conceived, designed, produced, tied, shipped, and supplied. Russ talks about how flies are selected for inclusion in Umpqua's catalog, their famous “Signature Tyer” line-up, new innovations and introductions, and what the future holds for fly patterns, hooks, and materials.- View all podcast episodes by going to the WAYPOINTS podcast page- WAYPOINTS is brought to you by our friends at Fishpond. Christmas Island – the world's largest coral atoll – has a legendary reputation as one of the top destinations in the world for saltwater flats fishing – especially when it comes to massive numbers of bonefish. Also known as Kiritimati Atoll, Christmas is an immense coral outcropping located in the tiny Pacific Ocean Republic of Kiribati. Christmas itself has the greatest land area of any atoll in the world, and the enormous flats system that surrounds this land mass and encompasses the atoll's inner lagoon is home to countless numbers of bonefish, several species of trevally, milkfish, triggerfish, and more. Christmas Island has – until only recently – been completely closed and shut off for more than three years. The country of Kiribati was among the first countries to lock down in the winter of 2020 at the very outset of the Pandemic. Since that time, until early May of 2023, the country has remained 100% closed off to visitors and anglers – longer than any other international fishing destination. In this episode of WAYPOINTS, host Jim Klug talks with angler Tim Rote, who was on the first plane back to Christmas Island for the opening week. After more than three years and one month of the atoll being closed, Tim talks about what the first group back found, and the current state of the atoll, the communities on Christmas, the lodges, and of course the fishery.- View all podcast episodes by going to the WAYPOINTS podcast page- Visit our Christmas Island page- WAYPOINTS is brought to you by our friends at Fishpond. With recent announcements that the U.S. and Cuban governments are – once again – taking steps to improve relations between the two countries, the logistics and intricacies that affect American fishing travel to Cuba are evolving and changing fast. In this first episode of a two-part series on Cuba, host Jim Klug sits down with Yellow Dog Flyfishing's Cuba Program Director – Kristen Tripp – to talk about what's involved in traveling to the country, and the logistical and legal challenges that still have to be navigated, the current state of affairs in Cuba, and the reality of what's happening on the ground today. Episode one also covers how best to travel to Cuba, who should go, what to expect when traveling in-country, and what we might be able to expect in the years ahead. We're sure you will enjoy the candid way both Lyn and Carina share their experiences. https://www.robandlyn.org/daughters-of-eve/ Available also on Amazon as Paperback or Kindle and many other outlets such as Barnes and Noble, Fishpond and Waterstone. One Review of the book is as follows... "What a great summary of a topic that is (especially in evangelical circles) still so misunderstood or ignored. Great and thorough teaching and the writer does not shy away from adding personal stories too. I would recommend it to any woman wanting to know what God thinks about their place in church and any man who wants to become their ally. Add it to ministry school reading lists and let's live this!!"

What Can a Fishpond Teach Us? I have a small fish pond with Koi and gold fish. The nine of them have been together for about four years. They've weathered some severe winters together and keep growing. I don't really know what I'm doing but something seems to be working, because they all seem to be thriving. The other day, I noticed that Whitey wasn't being his usual self. He was hanging out with his nose pointed down and his tail pointed up. As I moved around a bit, he moved a bit and looked okay, aside from sitting strangely in the water. Later that day as I was observing Whitey, looking for any irregularities on his body or in his eyes, I saw one of the other Koi fish gently nudge Whitey to move. At first I wondered if the other Koi, Kookoo, was irritated that Whitey was in his way, but it wasn't like that. It appeared to be an act of caring for Whitey. I watched this occur over the next couple of days by some of the other fish too - nudging Whitey a bit here and there. I did some research about Whitey's condition. One of the suggestions was to put him in quarantine to ensure the other fish wouldn't catch something if it were contagious. I thought about this but then remembered how the nudges of the other fish in the pond seemed to support Whitey. I thought, if I remove him from the pond and his fish family, that might be more traumatic in the end. So, I decided to leave him in the big pond and let nature take its course. This morning I woke up and went to tend to the fish as I typically do. To my delight Whitey seemed to be back to his normal self again. This made me so happy! What's the Takeaway from Whitey? We need community. If we become isolated from the world, which can happen in so many ways, we are rarely nudged out of our stupors, patterns and habits that may not allow us to thrive to the best of our ability. Now, I've been a pretty reclusive individual, however, I'm nudged by all the connections I have with my clients, with the people I correspond with, and through my small group of friends here on the Island. Like Whitey, I'm glad to have these nudges to remind me that my aloneness doesn't mean I'm isolated. I've always got support! How about you? - - - - For more blogs, books and videos, or if you are interesting in coaching or training with Dr. Rosie, check out her website: www.theparadigmshifts.com

This episode was recorded live at the International Fly Tackle Dealer (IFTD) show in Orlando in July 2018 and decided to release it as a podcast episode. I would like to thank the American Fly Fishing Trade Association (AFFTA) for the opportunity to moderate The Sustainable Angler: Climate Change Panel Discussion at the International Fly Tackle Dealer (IFTD). It is truly humbling to be marrying my passion for fly fishing and sustainability and bringing sustainability to the fly fishing industry. I would also like to thank the panelists: Dr. Aaron Adams from Bonefish & Tarpon Trust, Garrison Doctor from RepYourWater, Hilary Hutcheson from Lary's Fly & Supply, and John Land Le Coq from Fishpond for being willing to participate and discuss the impact climate change is having on our fisheries and businesses and sharing their success stories in fighting climate change!
From the mountains of Colorado, Johnny Le Coq not only leads Fishpond in the creation of cool products, but also in setting a high standard in conservation and global values. As a Certified B Corp they must continue to pass rigorous standards of verified social and environmental performance and aspire to use the power of markets to solve social and environmental problems. Their Cyclepond fabric marked an industry first when they introduced a line of products that were made from re-purposed fishing nets pulled from the ocean environment. As a lifelong photographer, Johnny’s eye for color, texture and design is integrated in all the Fishpond products. In a moving story, Johnny shares with us how his loss of sight in one eye has heightened his awareness and created a deep appreciation of his surroundings. As a gear nuts, we are fans of the Fishpond products. Their purposeful sling packs, quality fishing nets and waterproof travel bags are both fun and functional. This is a conversation we were really looking forward to. We hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed recording it… Find out more here: https://fishpondusa.com Thanks to one of our key sponsors: https://flyfishingshow.com
A step away from the normal on Stock Market Movers this week. There were plenty of market update's from NZX companies but this week the focus is on Warren Buffett's annual letter to Berkshire Hathaway shareholders. This is an 'event' that I look forward to with great anticipation every year and is probably second only to the Berkshire Hathaway annual meeting which will be coming in early May. Points of discussion include scaling up, focusing on what is important, capital allocation, share repurchases, risk and what makes a good business. The book discussed in the episode is titled: The Essay's of Warren Buffett. Here Lawrence Cunningham has ordered all of Buffett's letters to shareholders by topic. It is a must read and read again for all investors. In episode #7 of The DrakeCast, we heard about the threatened Menominee River on the border between Michigan's UP and Wisconsin. This river had unfortunately found itself on American River's list of the ten most endangered rivers in the United States. In this episode, we look at the unfortunate body of water that occupies the number one spot on that list - The Colorado River. Throughout the story, we'll chat with fly shop owners, fishermen, conservationists, and flyfishing industry leaders as we try to figure out how the Colorado gained such an unsightly title. The Colorado is a huge river, but it also represents the perils that all of the world's rivers face right now. Many thanks to Yellow Dog Flyfishing Adventures and Scott Fly Rods for their continued support of The DrakeCast. A big shout out to Fishpond and American Rivers for their help with this episode and their role in keeping our rivers healthy. Duke Beardsley was well on his way to a career in medicine, when, just before med school, he took a hard turn onto a new path when he decided to pursue art as a full-time vocation. Since then, he has become one of the West’s most revered artists, producing paintings of cowboys, anglers, and the Western way of life in a style that is uniquely his own. His work is big, bold, and completely original, and it continues to grow and evolve in ways that surprise even Duke himself. • Thanks to a childhood spent between Denver and his family’s eastern Colorado ranch, Duke has been immersed in cowboy culture for as long as he can remember. He has been drawing non-stop since he could hold a crayon, and as a child (sometimes to the dismay of his parents) he demonstrated a proclivity for sketching western scenes on the walls of his family’s home. Duke is also a committed conservationist with a deep devotion to preserving the West’s landscapes and heritage. This eclectic mix of experiences and interests, combined with a formal art education, allows Duke to produce works that are ambitious, inspiring, and engaging. • I stopped by Duke’s Denver studio earlier this week, where we had a fun and wide-ranging conversation. We chat about his decision to change his career goal from medicine to art, and the value he gleaned from a formal art education. He explains that life-long obsession with drawing on walls, and he tells some stories about how, as an adult, drawing on walls has led to surprising professional opportunities. We talk about his artistic process, his meditation practice, and how he managed his extroverted personality in the solitary world of creating art. He also discusses why land conservation is an issue that is so near and dear to his heart, and offers up some excellent book recommendations. • This was a lot of fun and I really appreciate Duke inviting me into his studio. Johnny Le Coq has been a successful businessman (and photographer) all his life. Still, who could expect a small accessories company--you know, the ones which crop up each year like daffodils, only to wither as fast as they came--to not only survive the turmoils of fly fishing's small market, but to become what one rep called "the company I'd give my left [censored] to land?" Listen in as Johnny's design genius peeks through the cracks of his modesty while he unveils one of fly-fishing's hottest brands.
