Welcome, you belong here. In this episode: FAQ is: How do I visit my family members in the military? Today's Destination is: Sunnyvale, CA Today's Mistake- Losing my airline rewards Travel Advice: Join my clubhouse rooms for travel tips FAQ: Nadia asked, How do I visit my family members in the military? My son is graduating from military training and I want to see him in Korea. Are there any discounts I can tap into for travel? Answer: Depending on the training center location, and security screening you may be able to visit him. When you do visit, you may want to check out some of the military benefits and see if they apply to family members, such as shopping in the commisary or other attractions. It's possible that you can ask the airlines for assistance in this, because they have likely had this question answered also. This question was from a recent clubhouse room. I'll mention Clubhouse at the end of the podcast again. Today's destination: Sunnyvale, California You'll find Sunnyvale in the Santa Clara Valley in northwest Santa Clara County, California. It's located along the famous Highway 101 and El Camino Real. San Jose borders to the north. Mountain View is Northwest and Los Altos is southwest. Cupertino is to the south. Santa Clara, home of the Mission and University was reviewed in episode 160 and is located to the east. The population is about 150,000, which is next to San Jose, the second most populous city in the county. It's part of Silicon Valley. It's the birthplace of the video game industry, where Atari was founded. https://www.sunnyvale.ca.gov/ https://www.sunnyvale.ca.gov/recreation-and-community/community-centers/senior-center https://www.sunnyvale.ca.gov/recreation-and-community/parks-and-trails/baylands-park https://heritageparkmuseum.org/ Here are a few suggestions for Sunnyvale. Heritage Park Museum is open three days a week and does not charge admission. There is also pottery and other activities at the local community center. The senior center may be of interest to you, so look in the show notes for these and other links. Consider visiting Baylands Park for hiking or picnics. Sunnyvale was known for having orchards and some still remain here. But most notably lately it is known as the home of several tech giants. The big industry here is the technology and information headquarters of many computer tech companies. Some of these large firms started here in garages and in high schools. Google, Apple, Facebook, now Meta and others have a presence here. Venture-capital seems to be flowing through the water. Sunnyvale is known for the home of many future technology projects. In Mountain View, you'll find the Computer History Museum, open Wed-Sun. https://computerhistory.org/ I visited Sunnyvale several times over the past 40 years living in California and most recently in January 2022 and stayed with my cousin, Jane Halligan. I flew into San Jose airport, rented a car and explored the area with several local residents to get insights to guide you to the best travel activities. Jane and I walked around an area that is reserved for seniors and community minded individuals and around what remains of the orchard groves. Do - Visit the Community Center and Museum. Go hiking and visit the Senior Center. Don't - Get stuck in traffic on the freeways if possible. Today's Mistake - Losing my airline rewards I've lost more airline points than I'd like to admit. It's probably hundreds of thousands of miles that were not recovered over 50 years of traveling solo. I've had special status on several airlines that no longer exist and I never did follow up to find out where my points went. I assume they just disappeared. Now, my credit card gives me rewards that I can turn into cash, no matter what airline I travel on. I would like to keep my points on dozens of airlines that I fly, but it seems that to do so requires a lot of extra work that doesn't add up. My advice is to keep track of your rewards better than I do. You can make them work for you. Today's Travel Advice-Join my clubhouse rooms for travel tips. No makeup needed. On this week’s episode, we throw it back to an episode we did back in March, with Drew Watson, Founder of @hopsandpiedenver and @berkeleydonuts…We recorded this right as there were launching the Berkeley Donut concept, and we hadn’t released it cuz the world ended the following week.. Anyways, we talk to Drew about how he & Leah opened up Hops N Pie after tiring out of the fine-dining scene in Cali.. and after all that positive talk promoting the restaurant, Kip railroaded the episode by hijacking conversations and making it all about nostalgic movies. If you like Ace Ventura, Waynes World, Dumb & Dumber and those type flicks… THEN THIS IS THE EPISODE FOR YOU! Don’t forget @berkeleydonuts open Wed-Sun, from 7 to sell out. GET OVER THERE!!! In this episode I chat with Kyle Rensmeyer from Holy Trinity Barbecue in Portland, Oregon. See all things: https://holytrinitybarbecue.com NEW HOURS, EFFECTIVE 7/22: Wed-Sun, 11AM - 8PM (or sold out) Order ahead here: https://holytrinitybarbecue.com/order-ahead Check out Holy Trinity Barbecue on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/holytrinitybarbecue See Holy Trinity Barbecue on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/holytrinitybarbecue We talk a few weeks into the shutdowns for the pandemic. He came up with a bunch of ideas to try to get food to his customers, but it ended up being just the way he had been doing and being in a food cart has it’s advantages because he was essentially grab and go. He did add the online ordering system so people can order ahead. Some interesting things he added was Family Packs(https://holytrinitybarbecue.com/order-ahead/june-19-21-family-pack-feeds-4-6-cddjn) and The Single Dad(https://holytrinitybarbecue.com/order-ahead/june-19-21-single-dad-feeds-2-3) which have really taken off. Kyle grew up outside of Dallas and went to Texas A & M. After graduation he became an animal feed commodity trader in Round Rock, but didn't enjoy that. He moved on to work for 7/11 in their corporate division and was transferred to Portland. The thing was, Portland didn't have the BBQ he was used to...so he started cooking on his own(and eventually selling). You may have seen his first version which was called Q PDX, but soon transitioned to Holy Trinity Barbecue and is nestled in a cart pod with 7-8 food carts in it. He talks about the great class he took from Dylan Taylor and references it several times as a place he learned a ton of about his craft, especially making sausage. During the month of May he did Sausage collabs with various carts including a Korean sausage and a pepperoni pizza sausage. I decided to go back into the archives for this one. This interview was recorded back in April but remains relevant as restaurateurs continue to struggle.I spoke with John Kraus: a local and global legend in the world of pastries. Not only does he run some of the best bakeries in the Twin Cities (Patisserie 46 & Rose Street Patisserie) but he's also one of 100 bakers in a global fraternity called Relais Desserts.Kraus spoke to me about what it's been like to operate at a distance for a community he so dearly loves.//The best way to support John and his business at this time is to visit this link https://squareup.com/store/Pat46 and order something. Here are the details listed on the page:Please check our SAME DAY online store that opens at 8 am. We will put what we have available there with limited quantities. squareup.com/store/46todayONLINE ORDERS for pick up at Patisserie 46 between Wed - Sun 7am to 2pm. Our second episode is with Laurie Thomas, executive director of the Golden Gate Restaurant Association and a San Francisco restaurateur behind Rose’s Cafe and Terzo in Cow Hollow. We ended up recording this episode on the fly, truly, because of the big news that recently dropped from San Francisco Mayor London Breed. She has placed a temporary 15-percent cap on the often-excessive commission fees charged by third-party delivery apps to restaurants, which can reach up to 30 percent or more. We discuss the Mayor’s decision to help support San Francisco restaurants with this order (and through other ways), talk about some of the confusion surrounding the use and terms of these delivery apps, and Laurie shares additional thoughts about the massive challenges our restaurants are currently facing. Two-Top:1. Alamar KitchenDetails of the Restaurant Workers Relief Program:• Meal pickup address: alaMar Kitchen at 100 Grand Ave in Oakland.• Meals will be distributed by contactless curbside pickup: Wed–Sun 4pm–6pm, first come, first served, as funding allows. Please pull up in your car on Valdez St. Walk-ups are also welcome. • Everyone must show some identifying paperwork to prove recent employment at a restaurant. A paystub will suffice in most cases.Updates: @alamaroakland 2. Fiorella and Bi-Rite Market: Pay It Forward TuesdaysEvery Tuesday at Fiorella’s Richmond (2339 Clement St.) and Russian Hill (2238 Polk St.) locations, they will hand out 100 free meals to healthcare workers, members of the restaurant industry (including the farmers, purveyors, and drivers who continue to provide food to restaurants), and grocery store workers. The meal is a choice of pizza (margherita, mushroom, or pepperoni) or pasta (cacio e pepe or pomodoro) from Fiorella, plus a fresh seasonal salad from Bi-Rite. At pick up, proof of employment is requested (current badge or paystub from March or April) for those currently employed (or recently laid off).Orders can be placed in person or over the phone at 415-829-7097 for pickup at the restaurant’s Russian Hill location, or 415-340-3049 for the Outer Richmond, 4:30pm–9pm every Tuesday.Updates: @fiorellaitalian and @biritesfIf you’re reading this in a podcast service, you can access the actual links in our episode notes at ontheflytablehopper.buzzsprout.com.If you’re a Bay Area business or individual and want to be featured in On the Fly, please fill out the form at bit.ly/ontheflyguest.Support the show (http://www.venmo.com/Marcia-Gagliardi)
Wet hop beer is the subject and our guests are from Old Possum Brewery, Scott Weiss from Redwood Hill Farm (where they produce great local goat cheese) and now Redwood Hill Hop Farm, and Sandro from Old Possum Brewery. Herlinda Heras and Mark Carpenter are also in today. Old Possum Tap Room and Kitchen is located in Santa Rosa (off Standish at Sutton) and have been open for a year and a half. The got started by transporting wort to local breweries. Later they decided to start producing too. They try to up-cycle whatever they can, their tasting room was built with all used equipment. Sandro is from Trieste in northeastern Italy. He worked in wine, with D'Argenzio in Sonoma County and other places. He still makes wine but he has moved into beer too. There are fresh hops in the studio, see the pictures of the Cashmere hops. This is their third year selling hops to Sonoma County brewers and also to Richmond, San Rafel and Napa. They also have produced goat cheese for 50 years and have brought some of that. They also brought the Fog Belt Wet Hop Beer (pictured), which uses their hops. Since there are so many breweries in Sonoma County now, and so many new hop growers, there are a lot of wet hopped beers. They have to use the fresh hops quickly so their proximity is an advantage. They appreciate the grassy taste and compare it to using dried or fresh basil in a recipe. They have brought Cashmere and Common hops. These are new public varieties. Some varieties are proprietary where the breeders have the rights for as few years. They grow 7 different varieties on about 1.5 acres, and they are expanding. They use the organic matter "goat berries" from the goats to help fertilize the hops. Deer and gophers don't like hops so that's fortunate. The hop shoots can be cooked and eaten as a vegetable, or also pickled. Mark says they're not that good but they're seasonal and people like them. They taste the Old Possum IPA and Mark says he likes the name. Possums are cool animals and they show up at night at his house to eat grapes. They also eat ticks, which is nice. They produce about 500 barrels for the tap room and they are developing their wholesale accounts. They have canning on the horizon. Sandro worked with Dr. Charlie Bamforth at UC Davis. They are located at 357 Sutton Place, off Standish, exit Todd Road, in Santa Rosa. Exit Todd Road, go west, turn right on Standish and left on Sutton They are open Wed-Sun noon-8 or 9 on weekends. They will also be at the Freshtival on October 12. Sandro will make a special IPA for the festival. Sandro is also a winemaker, working for his father in law, Ray D’Argenzio at D’Argenzio Wines. They make Italian varieties Dolcetto, Sangiovese, Barbera, and they even found some Montepulciano in Kenwood this year. Redwood Hill Farms has a herd of goats and the farm is open for visits in the Spring, which is fun when the young goats are running around. His parents started the farm in 1968. Their cheese is famous because it’s so good and Herlinda says it goes fantastically with the Wet Hop Beer. The website is redwood hill dot org Mark reminds us that Hopland was named after the many hop farms that used to be in Sonoma County. They need a lot of hours of light, so more northerly locations are advantageous. There are many in Yakima Valley which is at a similar latitude to hop growing regions in Europe. Hops are coming back and there are 15 growers in the NorCal Hop Growing Alliance.
