Send us a text#332 - There are long races, Cocodona 350, Vol State 500k, and then there's the Sri Chinmoy Self-Transcendence 3100 Mile Race. This race is like no other. It is as much a personal journey into self discovery as it is a foot race. But it is still a race and if you decide this is the race for you, it will push you farther than you have ever been before. And if you complete it, you may find yourself returning year after year. Those who do it every year, return again and again. This week, I talk about why this race is so special and how it stands apart from all other footraces. All links are on the show website. One of the few Vol State folks that can easily be identified using just her first name, like Cher and Reba. We have our own Shenoa! Of course, you'll hear about her pack and who doesn't want to know what's in it? More importantly, though, Shenoa gives extremely useful tips on running your race and how to deal with things that come up. This one really is a "don't miss" episode.
This is a special event! We've had runners, crews, and road angels. Now we have our 2024 photographer! I think everyone know the great photos she took in 2024 and hopefully, she'll be back. But you can listen to her tell us how she came to photographing ultras and especially Vol State and hear her talk about some of the special shots she got.
This week on the Dirt and Vert Podcast, we're trading in our trail shoes for combat boots as we welcome Zack Lever, an ultra runner and military veteran who's tougher than a tank! Zack shares his journey from a small logging town to a 20-year military career, and how he found solace and strength in ultra running after retirement. We talk about his early experiences on the trails, the challenges he faced in grueling races like Vol State and HOTS, and the mental and physical strategies he used to overcome obstacles. But it's not just about the miles. Zack opens up about the importance of community, the lessons learned from both triumphs and setbacks, and how running has helped him find peace and purpose. We also dive into his preparation for the upcoming Old Glory Ultra Relay, and the importance of having a coach and the right gear for those long hauls.Zack's story is a powerful reminder that running is more than just a sport; it's a journey of self-discovery, a testament to the human spirit's ability to overcome adversity, and a celebration of the strength we all have within.Chapters00:00 Introduction to Zack Lever and His Journey02:44 Zack's Transition from Military to Ultra Running05:29 First Experiences with Ultra Running08:26 Memorable Races and Family Involvement11:15 Challenges Faced in Early Races13:58 Insights from Vol State and HOTS Races25:46 Survival in the Desert28:57 The Race Against Time30:47 Lessons from the Journey Runs35:33 The Heat of the Challenge43:57 Overcoming Pain and Fatigue48:28 The Importance of Sleep and Nutrition in Endurance Running51:08 Memorable Races and Personal Achievements55:05 Setting Big Fitness Goals58:03 Team RWB and Supporting Veterans01:04:28 Training for the Old Glory Ultra Relay01:08:56 The Role of Coaching in Running Success01:18:15 The Joy of Learning and Coaching01:21:42 Understanding Training Blocks and Adaptation01:22:06 Tracking the Run Across the US01:23:39 Finding Your Why in Running01:25:47 Choosing the Right Shoes for Endurance01:31:24 Comparing Vol State and Georgia Death Race01:33:15 Chafing and Race Preparation01:37:36 Final Thoughts and Future Races
Former soldier Tim Hardy shares his approach to making his life choices. He has at times deliberately chosen a difficult path that includes some of the most arduous and hot multi-day races, like Vol State, and HOTS, and also cold races like the Arrowhead 135. Tim has recently taken a look at what makes a great experience for him in terms of community, travel time, course, and cost. He gives us a lot to consider as we make our own life choices. Register for the Cannonball Run!https://ultrasignup.com/register.aspx?did=118221Way too late but finally got Karen Jackson on the show! The Vol State legend from Santee, SC joins us to tell us about why she loves Vol State and wearing sandals while running among other things.
This has to be one of my favorite episodes because of the close friendship I have with Kaz. She is a PhD, a coach, a stellar runner and a fantastic friend. Today she gives us several mental performance tips and tricks and shows you how she applied them all in her Vol State race in 2023. They are tactics she teaches her athletes. You have to listen to this one. You can find more about Kaz at www.MettleRunning.com
Another road angel stepped up. Phil's spot is in a perfect place (no, we don't tell you where it is) but even more special are all the things he's learned from his own running experience as well as being a road angel. Even better, he has tips for people doing Vol State. The observations by someone outside of the actual race are often the most valuable observations you can find. When I asked how we could help him, his reply was simple - give him feedback and stories!
Rich has run all the Badwater races including Badwater 135) so one would think that Vol State would be easy for him. He shares his experience reaching the rock in just over 6 days in 2024 but even though a fast runner, he shares his challenges and techniques for overcoming them. He is a wealth of knowledge.
A Heartwarming story from the 2024 running of Vol State. Last place in the standings but first place in perseverance and determination. Listen to Mauricio's recounting of the difficulties he had on the road and how so many people came together to get him to the rock. You will have a different view of obstacles once you listen to this episode.
What an interesting Ultra history this man has. He also has done the three Laz races we talk the most about - HOTS, Vol State and Third Circle. Another episode filled with helpful tips from all three. Learn about the value of Checklists as well as many other suggestions for a better race.
Everyone wanted this interview with Gina because of 2024 HOTS but Gina wanted to talk about Vol State first. And since she was one of two people who saved my race in 2023, I definitely wanted to have her on the show. She is funny and full of life and I am sure you're going to love listening to her.
Great to publish this just before his birthday on the 17th! Most of us know PK as he always lays himself and his emotions open on our Facebook page. I was captivated as he proceeds to tell us the heartbreaking story behind his Vol State attempts and achievements. He goes into depth about the people that matter to him as well. After all this is "All about the people".
Joey Lichter is a dear friend of mine that I met as part of the Florida Ultra Running Community. He lives in South Florida and is a college professor, badass ultra runner, and just a well-read, super smart guy. We covered many subjects including the election, politics, DNF's, running, races, psychedelics, etc. He has run quite a few ultras including HOTS, Vol State, Cowboy 200, Icarus 48 hr, Stinger, 6 Days in the Dome, and on and on. He's a common sight as a crew or volunteer at races and just a fun guy to be around. He is definitely the kind of person we want teaching our college students. If you enjoy half as much as I did, this will be a huge success. We all know that 2024 Vol State was the last year with crews allowed. These two people explain what it's like to start screwed and then eventually switch - either to crewed status or being crewed. Trish also has what I consider the most profound story about what her return to Vol State taught her. It's pretty captivating and it was fun to have both of them on the show.
Not sure how i got so lucky to be able to interview Cory Reese. He's been an idol of mine since even before he did Vol State. In this episode, you'll hear about the struggles in his journey in Tennessee and in life. He'll pull you in deeply making you want to read all his books, watch his YouTube videos and listen to all his music. I had so much fun with Avalon. She is a delight and her story shows the fierce determination she has. Her accomplishments aren't just with Vol State but also in life. Listen to her and you'll gain some insight about what's important and what isn't.

Brian fits my definition of a "Laz Addict" if I ever met one. He's done all the races - HOTS, Vol State and Third Circle! Of course, there are many more races in his resume, but we focus on the Laz journey runs. He offers so many tips, even I had to listen again and hurry to scribble them down. He also has some insights into crewing as he crewed his wife at Vol State in 2024. I know you'll love this one.
Some of our most inspiring guests come from referrals. Our friend Rebecca messaged us about Heather. They met during Vol State and Rebecca knew we had to chat with her. Heather is a mom, nurse, veteran and all-around bad ass. She has tackled some of the toughest races including the Leadville 100 and Barkley Fall Classic. What else can I do? That is the question Heather always asks herself after accomplishing big goals. On this podcast we talk to Heather about her trail running journey that started in 2020; how it evolved to 100-mile races and beyond. We also talk about how she trains, balances life, self-care and showing up for herself daily. Heather is full of inspiration and encouragement!

Lisa McFadden is an amazingly accomplished runner with over 100 ultras completed, including twenty 100 milers. She is also one of only a handful of people on the planet to complete the Triple Crown of the Last Annual Tennessee Journey runs, put on by that evil genius and previous guest Lazarus Lake, which is comprised of the Vol State (314 miles which she has completed twice), The Last annual Heart of the South (340 miles), and culminating in The Last Annual Third Circle of Hell race which was an astonishing 371 miles. And if that wasn't enough, she took on the 2024 Barkley Marathons with 3 weeks notice for entry and then toed the line at Western States where she missed the official time cutoff at a heartbreaking 98 miles into the race, but still continued on to finish the legendary course. Take us on your long run to hear our incredible conversation with Lisa and soak in all the value that she provides. Enjoy the episode!
Laurie Matecki is another one of those runners who if you haven't heard of her, you've probably seen her at a race at some point. With over 150 results on Ultrasignup, Laurie is everywhere all the time. One of her most recent finishes is the Buckeye 200, which was her first 200 mile race (although she's done Vol State and HOTS).
This woman never stops smiling and if you listen to her, she apparently never stops talking too! Her energy is beyond compare and I was so thrilled to have her talk with me for almost and hour and a half. Her stories of Vol State outshine those of any others we've listened to yet.
Behind every successful man is a good woman but in this case, it's neck and neck. Vicky Halsey shares her triumph from "if Jim can do this, maybe I can too" to "I can do this alone". Vicky gives us great tips and stories to help lead us into the fall season. Even though Vol State 2025 is months away, the excitement NEVER goes away!
What a legend. Paul Heckert is well known throughout the running (and especially the ultra) community. His is definitely a Vol State master and one to whom I owe a great deal since he saved my race in 2021! That's when he got the nickname "The Warden" because he adopted that role so readily in keeping me trudging over the miles to reach the Rock. I owe Paul a great deal. Enjoy your listen!
Join Kosta and his guest: Dr. Mark Green, educator, community organizer and actor. Currently Dr. Green is a professor of biology at Tennessee Tech University and Vol State Community College where he facilitates a campus community garden and non-credit based outdoor series open to all adventurers of the Upper Cumberland. From dropping out of school to join the military to later getting your PhD, to being a stand-in for Tom Hanks on Sully, to starting a public outdoor adventure series in the Upper Cumberland, you've left no stone unturned. What did you want to be when you grew up? Did you ever think you'd meet the actual Forrest Gump? You currently work as a professor at both Vol State and TTU. This man made me laugh more than anyone ever has so kudos to him. He has such great info and even though I say that every week, it's even more evident when you listen to his enthusiasm. You can get so much energy just from your time with him even if you've never met him. If I listened to any audio during Vol State, this would be the thing I played over and over again. Not a word is wasted airwaves! He's also an amazing trauma therapist with two sites you should visit: EternalEndurance.com and BrainFreease.com (and yes that's spelled correctly). His work with veterans is so important. I am so grateful he took the time to be on the show for us.

Joey is one of the nicest guys I know and you'll understand why as you listen to his heartfelt tales of Vol State "failure" and success in this episode. He tells you some "must-do's", one of which is to realize that this is a Vacation (without a car) and you should treat it as such! Enjoy
Salley is a Vol State veteran as well as a United States Marine Corps Veteran. She advocates two simple things - "keep moving forward" and "trust yourself". Easy to say but not always easy to do. That's why you need to listen to her talk about her experiences in this Podcast
With the 2024 Vol State race just around the corner, I wanted to help you through the last weekend of nerves by giving you this bonus episode of talking with Road Angel, David Scott (and all related to him). He will charm you in this episode as he does in person when you see him. What an amazing Road Angel (whom I first thought was a hallucination).
Carmel and Jarrod were "the Boys" in my latest book and on this episode Carmel gives his side of the story. Ha ha. Seriously though, he has many more tips and tricks and tells of how companionship at Vol State not only helps you keep on going but also leads to life long friends.
This episode features a Spam loving Race Director who has participated in all three summer vacations without a car - Vol State, HOTS and Third Circle. Can you spell "Wise"? Or maybe there's a better word??? Enjoy his adventures as he brings you along in his pack.

Another Vol State friend for life. After the 2018 Vol State, Diane helped me in my attempt to cross the US. without her, I'd have ended up in Hawaii since I'm so geographically challenged. But this retired Marine was definitely always faithful and always there for me. You can't ask for a better friend! Listen to her Vol State and HOTS escapades.

Hunt Brumby passed from this world on Sunday, April 7, 2024. He was a friend, an ultra runner, an athlete I coached, some one who I respected, and inspired so many! He left us too soon! He battled cancer valiantly. He continued to smile and be present. I was amazed at his strength. That was Hunt; Strong willed and determined to fight on! I'll miss him. The following episode we recorded after Hunt finished the Vol State 500k in 2021. The original episode was released on July 29, 2021. I love you my friend! Dave Moore is a Lowcountry ultra runner who, even in the extreme world of ultra running, runs distances that are considered extreme. Dave has several 200+ mile distance finishes under his belt like Vol State and Heart of the South. His most recent super long distance finish was the Swammie Shuffle 200, which is mostly in the Outer Banks of North Carolina but also has some portions in the Outer Banks of Virginia. On this episode, Dave talks about how he got into the extreme distances, running 100 miles in firefighter gear, how he's able to take so much time off work to run these insane races, and he recaps his Swammie Shuffle experience.
