The first time I saw these guys was in the documentary The Kid after finishing Tahoe 200 — and I immediately thought:“Who are these dudes?”There was something different about them. The energy. The edge. The authenticity. Then I started seeing more about HyperlyteNot just as another nutrition company… but as a movement. And then I saw them at the races.I saw Jeremy at Leadville.Emory out there racing the mountains himself. Then Jeremy lining up at Run Rabbit Run.That's when it clicked:They aren't just building products for ultrarunners. They ARE ultrarunners. In this episode, we dive into:• Jeremy's journey from addiction and thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail to crushing 100-milers like Run Rabbit Run, Bear 100, Cruel Jewel, and Rim to River• Emory's path from 300-lb college football lineman to Leadville, Wasatch, High Lonesome, and The Bear• What 100-mile racing teaches you about life, fatherhood, and staying present• The biggest mistakes ultrarunners make in long races• How to balance business, family, and high-level training• Why they built Hyperlite differently (and what was broken in endurance nutrition)• The philosophy behind simple fueling: 100g carbs, 1,000mg sodium — done right• Building a brand that actually reflects trail cultureThis one is raw. It's real. And it's about more than just nutrition. It's about identity, resilience, and building something that actually matters. If you care about ultras, performance, community, and pushing your limits — this one will fire you up.Let's ramble on.SHOW LINKS:Register for our race, The Desert Peak Ultra 100K + 50K at desertpeakultra.comWant to work with me to crush your next ultramarathon in our group coaching program? Most runners don't fail because they aren't tough. They fail because they don't have a real plan.In this video, I break down the exact system we use at Everyday Ultra to build 50K, 100K, and 100-mile training plans that actually get results. You'll learn:• How to analyze your race course (vert, terrain, heat)• How to structure your long range plan• Block periodization (VO2 max → Threshold → Endurance)• How much volume you REALLY need• How to adjust when things go wrong• How to peak properly without burning outIf you're training for an ultramarathon — this is your blueprint.

Most ultrarunners aren't undertrained. They're just optimizing for the wrong things. In this episode, I break down the 3 biggest training mistakes that quietly cost athletes hours in a 50K, 100K, or 100-miler — and how to fix them immediately. We dive into:• Why running your easy miles “kind of easy” is sabotaging your fitness• The hidden downside of doing too much easy running• How to identify the ONE limiter holding back your race performance• Why flexibility (not rigidity) is the real key to breakthrough training• How to build durability, aerobic power, and smart disciplineIf you want your training to actually translate to race-day performance, this episode will change how you approach your next block.SHOW LINKS:Register for our race, The Desert Peak Ultra 100K + 50K at desertpeakultra.comWant to work with me to crush your next ultramarathon in our group coaching program? Fitness doesn't guarantee success on race day.You can have the highest VO₂ max in the field…You can run insane workouts…You can show up tapered and ready…And still fall into the mental traps that sabotage your race.In this episode, I break down the biggest mental traps ultrarunners face — from going out too hard, to walking when you should be running, to not eating when you don't feel like eating, to letting negative self-talk take control. These are the exact lessons I've learned from my own 100-milers, 200-milers, Cocodona, Tahoe, Javelina — and from coaching hundreds of athletes on the Everyday Ultra Racing Team.We cover:• Why “what is predictable is preventable”• How to pace properly using RPE (and avoid blowing up early)• The trap of thinking you're fitter than you are (and how to ground belief in data)• When to push late in a race• Why walking when you don't need to is costing you HUGE time• How to stay disciplined with fueling (even when you're sick of gels)• The power of breaking races into small chunks• Why you need a deep toolkit of mental strategies• How to handle negative self-talk when it shows upThis episode is about building discipline.Because discipline doesn't care about feelings. It cares about execution. If you want to race smarter, stronger, and more confidently in your next ultra — this one is for you.SHOW LINKS:Register for our race, The Desert Peak Ultra 100K + 50K at desertpeakultra.comWant to work with me to crush your next ultramarathon in our group coaching program? What if you didn't start running until later in life — and still became one of the best ultrarunners in the world? In this episode of the Everyday Ultra Podcast, I sit down with Megan Eckert, one of the most consistent and resilient athletes in ultrarunning today.Megan was voted 3rd overall in the 2025 World Ultrarunner of the Year rankings, became the first woman in history to run over 600 miles in a six-day race, finished 2nd at Badwater 135, and went 383+ miles at Big's Backyard Ultra — all after starting running at age 29.We talk about what it actually takes to endure at the highest level — mentally, emotionally, and physically — and why fun, focus, and simplicity might matter more than most training plans. In this episode, we dive into:• How Megan went from fearing her first race to thriving in multi-day ultras• Why focus — not motivation — is the real mental toughness skill• How to approach massive races like Cocodona 250 without overcomplicating training• What backyard ultras and fixed-time events teach you about yourself• Why making training fun is a performance enhancer (not a distraction)• The mindset shift that helps athletes push through pain without breaking• How she recovers between massive races — including an underrated recovery tool• Why finding your people in the sport can change everythingWhether you're training for your first ultra or chasing your biggest endurance goal yet, this conversation is packed with perspective, wisdom, and reminders of why we run in the first place.

In this episode of the Everyday Ultra Podcast, I sit down with Everyday Ultra coach Ben Lehman — an ultrarunner whose journey into the sport started from a place much deeper than finish times and race results. After losing his best friend, Ben turned to running as a way to process grief, rebuild himself, and eventually find purpose through endurance. What began with Spartan races turned into a passion for long mountain adventures — including completing his first 200-mile race at Cocodona 250.In this conversation, we talk about the emotional side of ultrarunning, the mental skills required to survive multi-day races, and why endurance sports can become a powerful tool for healing, identity, and growth. We also dive into Ben's training philosophy, lessons learned from Cocodona, pacing mistakes, sleep strategies, aid station efficiency, and how he now coaches athletes preparing for their biggest races yet. This is a raw, honest, and deeply human conversation — about pain, resilience, and learning how to keep moving forward when things get hard.In this episode, we cover:• How Ben got into running after losing his best friend• Why ultrarunning became a form of healing• Lessons learned from completing Cocodona 250• The mental “system override” that helps during dark moments• Why pacing and patience matter more than fitness• How to approach sleep during multi-day races• Training lessons for 100-mile and 200-mile athletesIf you're training for an ultra — or navigating something difficult in life — this episode will remind you why endurance is about more than just running.SHOW LINKS:Want to work with Ben as your coach to help you crush your big ultra goals? Today's episode is a special throwback from 2023 — one we felt called to re-share in light of Sally McRae completing the Long Haul 100 Mile.In this conversation, recorded after her historic Grand Slam of 200's season, Sally opens up about what it really takes to keep moving forward when everything hurts — physically, mentally, and emotionally. In this episode, we talk about:• What it feels like deep into the final miles when nothing makes sense anymore• The quiet mental battles most people never see• How competition can bring out your best self• The moments when quitting feels logical (but wrong at the same time)… and what to do to overcome it.• Why some athletes keep moving forward when others stop• The unseen mental skills built long before race day• What truly matters when the finish line still feels impossibly far awayHuge thank you to Sally for coming on the show!SHOW LINKS:Register for our race, The Desert Peak Ultra 100K + 50K at desertpeakultra.comWant to work with me to crush your next ultramarathon in our group coaching program? This episode is a little different. With the end of the year comes a flood of recap posts, goal-setting pressure, and the feeling that you need to change everything overnight. But what if that's not actually how real progress happens? In this solo episode, Everyday Ultra Coach Alyssa Clark reflects on the past year and shares the lessons that running — and life — kept reinforcing again and again. Not tactics. Not workouts. But the stuff underneath it all.In this episode, we talk about:• Why trying to control everything often creates more chaos• The quiet difference between consistency and flexibility• What finally made change possible after years of resistance• How kindness plays a bigger role in this sport than most people realize• Why “showing up” matters more than doing something perfectlyIf you've been feeling behind… overwhelmed… or unsure about what you're supposed to be doing next — this episode is a reminder that growth doesn't come from overhauling your life.It comes from continuing to show up.SHOW LINKS:Register for our race, The Desert Peak Ultra 100K + 50K at desertpeakultra.comWant to work with me to crush your next ultramarathon in our group coaching program? In this episode of the Everyday Ultra Podcast, we're breaking down our 2026 ultrarunning predictions — but not in an ESPN-style “who's going to win” way.Instead, this is a guidebook for everyday athletes.Joined by Everyday Ultra coaches Alyssa Clark and Andrew Redden, we dive into what trends, shifts, and changes are coming next year — and more importantly, how you can use them to train smarter, race better, and actually enjoy the sport more.We cover everything from emerging training trends to the races that are quietly becoming must-dos — plus the mindset shifts athletes need as ultrarunning continues to explode in popularity. In this episode, we talk about:• The training trends we believe will define 2026• Why quality is starting to matter more than just piling on miles• The rise of fatigue-resistance training (and who it's actually for)• Why biking, recovery, and flexibility are becoming bigger performance tools• The races that are about to blow up next year• Which athletes could have massive breakout seasons — and why• How growth of the sport is changing the ultrarunning landscape• Why comparison is becoming one of the biggest mental traps for runners• What “doing less to do more” really means• How to approach 2026 with clarity, confidence, and long-term progressWhether you're chasing your first trail race or your next big breakthrough, this episode will help you head into 2026 with a smarter plan — and a healthier mindset.SHOW LINKS:Register for our race, The Desert Peak Ultra 100K + 50K at desertpeakultra.comWant to work with me to crush your next ultramarathon in our group coaching program? In episode two of our Injury Focus Series, I'm joined again by Dr. Kameron Harder — Doctor of Physical Therapy and head strength coach at Ridge Athletics — to break down some of the most frustrating and lingering injuries runners deal with.Shin splints. Achilles pain. Plantar fasciitis. These are the issues that seem to show up out of nowhere, stick around forever, and derail training blocks when things are finally going well.In this episode, we dig into why these injuries are so stubborn, what most runners misunderstand about them, and how strength, load management, and movement quality actually play a role in keeping you running pain-free.We cover:• Why lower-leg injuries tend to linger longer than knee or hip pain• What's really happening when pain “warms up” during a run• How small changes (surface, shoes, drop) can quietly overload tissue• The difference between managing symptoms vs. fixing the root issue• Why some injuries keep coming back even when mileage stays the same• How strength and force absorption connect to durability• What runners should be doing before pain ever shows upIf you've ever dealt with recurring lower-leg pain — or want to avoid it altogether — this episode will change how you think about injury, strength training, and long-term durability as a runner.

In this episode, I break down one of the most important — and most overlooked — aspects of ultramarathon success:IdentityNot motivation. Not discipline. Not grit.Identity.Because the way you see yourself determines how you train, how you race, and whether you break through plateaus… or stay stuck repeating the same cycles. In this episode, we talk about:• Why most runners unknowingly train against themselves• The subtle language mistake that limits performance• The mindset shift that separates consistent runners from stuck ones• How certain identities feel motivating — but actually backfire• The mental framework elite athletes rely on under pressure• One word that can completely change how your brain responds to setbacks• Why two runners can fail the same way — and get opposite outcomes• How repetition shapes belief (whether you realize it or not)• What actually makes mantras powerful in long races• How this mindset shows up during long runs, injuries, bad days, and big goalsSHOW LINKS:Register for our race, The Desert Peak Ultra 100K + 50K at desertpeakultra.comWant to work with me to crush your next ultramarathon in our group coaching program? I'm joined by Alex Hermanson (aka Herm) — content creator, community builder, and self-proclaimed “big dude who runs.”Herm has built a following of thousands of runners by keeping things real, relatable, and honest — proving that you don't need to be like a stereotypical runner to chase big goals. We talk about his journey from struggling to run a few miles… to finishing two 50-mile ultramarathons, including Antelope Canyon 50M and the legendary JFK 50 .This conversation goes way deeper than just training. We dive into mindset, identity, long-term progression, and why falling in love with the process matters more than chasing finish lines. In this episode, we talk about:Why ultra running doesn't need to be “hardcore” to be meaningfulHow Herm approaches massive long-term goals like Cocodona 250 without overwhelming himselfThe danger of rushing distances too fast — and how patience builds longevityWhy training wins often feel better than race dayHow to handle the mental lows during long ultrasThe simple question that can pull you out of dark moments mid-raceFueling lessons from 50-mile races (including loads of Mountain Dew)Why consistency beats intensity every timeAnd how remembering where you started changes everythingIf you've ever felt like you don't “fit the mold” of a runner…If you've struggled with pressure, comparison, or feeling behind…Or if you just want to build toward big goals without burning out — this episode is for you.

Most ultrarunners know this one skill matters matters.Very few actually know how to properly deploy it when life gets busy, motivation disappears, or training starts to feel heavy. In this Coaches Roundtable episode of the Everyday Ultra Podcast, I'm joined by Everyday Ultra coaches Liz Myers and Christie Brinker to break down what consistency actually looks like — and how to build it in the real world. We go far beyond “just show up” and get into the systems, mindset shifts, and practical strategies that allow ultrarunners to train consistently without burning out, getting injured, or sacrificing their entire life.In this episode, we cover:Why consistency is a learned skill, not a personality traitThe difference between blind consistency and smart consistencyHow to stay consistent when motivation is goneWhen skipping or adjusting a workout is actually the right moveHow to design your training around real-life stress, work, and familyThe most overlooked form of consistency: fueling, recovery, and strength trainingWhy “perfect” training is the enemy of long-term progressIf you're training for an ultramarathon and feel like consistency is the missing piece — or you've struggled to maintain momentum in long training blocks — this episode will change how you approach your training moving forward.SHOW LINKS:Register for our race, The Desert Peak Ultra 100K + 50K at desertpeakultra.comWant to work with me to crush your next ultramarathon in our group coaching program? What if chasing massive goals didn't require sacrificing your family, your career, or your sanity? In this episode of the Everyday Ultra Podcast, I sit down with Iris Sexton — a full-time working mom, wife, and ultrarunner — who proves that you can train for ultra-marathons without blowing up the rest of your life.Over the past year, Iris has completed her first 50K, first 50-miler, first 100-mile attempt, and a 12-hour race — all while working full-time, raising two kids, strength training, and staying deeply present in her life. No shortcuts. No obsession. No burnout. We talk about what it really takes to pursue extreme goals sustainably — and why most people are held back not by time, but by false trade-offs they believe they have to make. This conversation is for anyone who's ever thought:“I want more… but I don't want to lose everything else.”In this episode, we dive into:How Iris went from casual fitness to ultrarunning without overhauling her entire lifeWhy consistency beats massive training weeks (especially for busy athletes)The mindset shift that allows you to do hard things without resentmentHow to balance ambition, motherhood, and a demanding careerWhat it's like when a 100-mile race is canceled mid-race — and how to mentally process itWhy it's okay to want a career and big endurance goalsHow saying goals out loud changes what you believe is possibleIf you're chasing big goals but refuse to let them cost you your relationships, your health, or your identity — this episode will hit home.

In this episode of the Everyday Ultra Podcast, I sit down with one of the best examples of what it truly means to be an Everyday Ultra athlete — Evan Moody .Evan is a full-time professional, husband, father, and ultrarunner who has quietly built an incredible resume over the past few years — including finishing Grindstone 100 as his first 100 miler, racing Black Canyon 100K and Istria 110K, and most recently running a 21:30 100-mile PR at Javelina through near-perfect execution. But this conversation isn't just about results. We dig deep into:How Evan went from “someone who runs” to fully owning the identity of being an athleteWhy trusting the process is one of the hardest — and most important — skills in ultrarunningWhat it actually takes to execute a great 100-mile race (nutrition, pacing, aid station discipline, mindset)How friendly rivalry can become powerful motivationWhy accountability matters more than motivationLessons learned from injury, patience, and long-term consistencyHow to plan a meaningful race calendar instead of throwing darts at UltraSignupEvan's next big challenge: a Catskills 35-Peak FKT attempt and Cocodona 250This episode is a masterclass in execution, patience, and long-term development — and a reminder that you don't have to blow up your life to chase big ultrarunning goals. If you've ever struggled with doubt mid-training block, questioned your fitness, or wondered whether trusting the process is actually worth it — this episode is for you.SHOW LINKS:Register for our race, The Desert Peak Ultra 100K + 50K at desertpeakultra.comWant to work with me to crush your next ultramarathon in our group coaching program? Podcast DescriptionFastest Known Times (FKTs) look simple from the outside.Pick a route.Run it fast.Done.But anyone who's actually attempted one knows the truth:FKTs are a completely different beast than racing — mentally, logistically, and emotionally. In this Coaches Roundtable episode, we break down what really goes into planning, executing, and surviving an FKT attempt — from supported vs. unsupported decisions to the pivots you don't see on Instagram. You'll hear firsthand lessons from athletes who've been deep in it — including massive mountain routes, multi-day efforts, and attempts that didn't go as planned. If you've ever thought:“I want to try an FKT someday”“How do people even plan these?”“What happens when things go sideways?”…this episode is for you.Inside this episode, we unpack:The real differences between supported, self-supported, and unsupported FKTsHow to choose the right style of FKT for your goals (not your ego)The hidden logistics most runners don't think about until it's too lateWhy safety, communication, and flexibility matter more than fitnessHow to pivot mid-attempt without mentally blowing upWhat it feels like when conditions, weather, or wildlife force hard decisionsWhy FKTs are less about records — and more about creativity, problem-solving, and communityWhether you're planning your first FKT, dreaming about one down the road, or just want a deeper look behind the curtain…This episode will completely change how you think about what's possible out there.

What does it really mean to be an everyday ultra runner? In this episode of the Everyday Ultra Podcast, I sit down with Wes Plate—ultrarunner, YouTube creator, race director of the Copper Kings 100, and the man behind the name Mid-Pack Elite.Wes has completed over 60 ultramarathons, including Cocodona 250 all five years, the Triple Crown of 200s, and the Arizona Monster 300 → Cocodona double—a feat only a handful of runners have ever attempted. But what makes Wes truly special isn't just the miles… it's the journey behind them.We dive deep into Wes's story of overcoming alcohol addiction, how obsession can be both destructive and transformative, and why many ultrarunners are wired the way they are. Wes opens up about identity, self-doubt, validation, and how ultrarunning became a healthier outlet for the same drive that once nearly destroyed his life.We also talk about:What it means to be a mid-pack eliteLessons ultramarathons teach us about life, suffering, and perspectiveWhy Cocodona fundamentally changed how Wes sees himselfThe realities of racing (and directing) 100–300 mile eventsBuilding the Copper Kings 100 from a personal passion project into a sold-out raceWhy the middle and back of the pack are the true heartbeat of ultrarunningWhat's next for Wes—including Vol State and stepping back from Cocodona (for now)This is a powerful, honest conversation about identity, resilience, addiction recovery, community, and purpose—and why ultrarunning is about becoming a better human, not just a faster one.If you've ever felt like you're chasing something deeper through running… this one's for you.SHOW LINKS:Register for our race, The Desert Peak Ultra 100K + 50K at desertpeakultra.comWant to work with me to crush your next ultramarathon in our group coaching program? Most runners don't quit because training is hard. They quit because training takes over their life.In this episode, I break down how you can train for big goals — marathons, ultras, Ironman, you name it — without burning out, ruining relationships, or constantly feeling behind. This is the exact framework I use in my own training and with athletes who have full-time jobs, families, and real responsibilities — not just unlimited free time.We talk about:Why the “Ironman Widow” mindset is broken — and what to do insteadHow to actually prioritize training without sacrificing sleep, family, or your careerThe simple planning framework that makes training fit into your life (not the other way around)Why consistency isn't about doing everything — and how breaking promises to yourself kills confidenceHow to navigate busy seasons, unexpected curveballs, and life chaos without derailing your fitnessWhy fulfillment matters more than balance — and how that makes you a better runner long-termIf you've ever felt overwhelmed trying to “do it all,” this episode will give you clarity, permission, and a better way forward.Because the goal isn't just to finish strong on race day —it's to build a life that actually supports the runner you want to be.SHOW LINKS:Register for our race, The Desert Peak Ultra 100K + 50K at desertpeakultra.comWant to work with me to crush your next ultramarathon in our group coaching program? Grueling. But what if that mindset is actually holding runners back?In this episode of the Everyday Ultra Podcast, Joe sits down with elite mountain athlete, creator, and all-around high-energy force Mikey Mitchell to challenge some of the most deeply held beliefs in ultrarunning — about toughness, suffering, fear, performance, and what it really means to “do it right.”Behind the viral content, jockstraps, and unapologetic fun is a serious competitor:D1 track & cross country background, podium finishes at major mountain ultras, a sub-2:30 marathon, Leadville 100 finisher, and a rapidly growing presence in ski mountaineering. But Mikey's biggest impact might not be his results — it's how he approaches the sport. In this conversation, we dive into:Why having more fun can actually make you mentally tougherThe difference between productive discomfort and unnecessary sufferingWhy finishing matters — even when it's not your dayHow mountaineering, skimo, and adventure build resilience ultra runners can't get on flat trailsThe hidden danger of chasing “perfect races”Why fear shouldn't stop you — and when it shouldHow to train hard without losing your love for the sportWhat the future of ultrarunning culture should look likeThis episode is honest, opinionated, inspiring, and different — just like the sport can be.If you've ever felt burned out, intimidated, or boxed in by how ultrarunning is “supposed” to look…this conversation might change how you approach the next start line.

Mountain races demand more than just “more vert.”In this coaches roundtable episode, Joe sits down with Everyday Ultra coaches Christie Brinker and Andrew Redden to break down what it really takes to prepare for mountainous ultramarathons — from runnable alpine climbs to soul-crushing descents — whether you live at sea level, the Midwest, or the mountains themselves.Between Leadville 100, Kodiak 100, Cruel Jewel, and hundreds of athletes coached to mountain races, this conversation cuts through the noise and gets brutally practical about what works, what doesn't, and what most runners get wrong. You'll learn:Why most runners sabotage their mountain training before it even startsHow to train for steep climbs without blowing up your legs or fitnessThe biggest downhill mistakes that destroy quads on race dayHow treadmill training can actually make you stronger for mountain racesWhat power hiking should really feel like (and why it's not “giving up”)How to prepare for altitude when you don't live at elevationWhen a training camp is worth it — and how to structure one correctlyWhether you're eyeing your first mountain ultra or trying to stop getting wrecked late in hilly races, this episode will change how you approach mountain training — and help you show up stronger, smarter, and more confident on race day.SHOW LINKS:Register for our race, The Desert Peak Ultra 100K + 50K at desertpeakultra.comWant to work with me to crush your next ultramarathon in our group coaching program? Mental toughness is more than just pushing harder or suffering more. It's about learning how to believe in yourself when things get uncomfortable — and knowing how to respond when they do.In this episode, Hillary Allen joins the show to break down what self-belief and mental toughness actually look like for ultrarunners, and why so many athletes struggle to build them in a sustainable way. With a background in neuroscience, exercise physiology, and mental performance — plus years of experience competing at the highest level of mountain running — Hillary shares a powerful framework for developing confidence, resilience, and awareness that goes far beyond motivation or grit. This conversation is for ultrarunners who want to perform better without burning out, and who want their mindset to be an asset — not a limiter — in training and racing. In this episode, we explore:Why mental toughness is a trainable skill, not a personality traitHow self-belief quietly erodes — and how to rebuild itThe difference between pushing through discomfort and sabotaging progressThe hidden mindset mistake that drains motivation over timeWhy rest and recovery are psychological skills, not just physical onesHow identity impacts performance more than most runners realizeWhat elite ultrarunners do differently when confidence is shakenIf you've ever questioned your toughness, struggled with motivation, or felt disconnected from your “why,” this episode will give you a new lens on what it really means to endure better.About Hillary AllenHillary Allen is a world-class trail and skyrunning athlete, U.S. Skyrunning Series champion, multiple-time course record holder, and Team USA medalist. She holds a master's degree in neuroscience and physiology, is currently studying sports psychology, and is the author of Out and Back, one of the most influential books in endurance sports. Knee pain is one of the most common issues runners deal with — and also one of the most misunderstood. In this episode, I'm joined by Dr. Kameron Harder (DPT) of Ridge Athletics to break down why knee injuries happen in runners, how to treat them correctly, and what you can do right now to prevent them from coming back.We specifically dive into the two most common knee issues runners face:Runner's Knee (Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome)IT Band SyndromeIf you've ever dealt with pain around the kneecap, sharp pain on the outside of the knee, or been told to “just stop running,” this episode will completely change how you think about knee injuries. In this episode, we cover:Whether running is actually bad for your knees (and what the research really says)Why knee pain is usually a signal, not an injuryThe biggest mistakes runners make when treating knee painWhy strength training — not rest — is often the missing pieceThe role your hips play in both runner's knee and IT band issuesWhat you can run through safely vs. when you should modify trainingWhy foam rolling your IT band doesn't work (and what to do instead)How to prevent knee pain from becoming a recurring cycleThis is the first episode in a monthly injury-prevention series designed to help runners stay healthy, consistent, and durable — so you can keep training and racing without constantly being sidelined. If knee pain has ever limited your running — or you want to make sure it never does — this episode is a must-listen.SHOW NOTES:Register for our race, The Desert Peak Ultra 100K + 50K at desertpeakultra.comWant to work with me to crush your next ultramarathon in our group coaching program? Lydia Oldham didn't come from a traditional ultrarunning background. She started running during lockdown — running 1 mile runs, sprinting every 5K, and having no idea she'd one day be creating 300-mile running projects across countries. In this episode, Lydia breaks down how she built herself into someone capable of taking on massive, self-created challenges — including running solo across Portugal, completing a solo Speed Project, and most recently running 300 miles from London to Cornwall for charity. But this conversation isn't just about distance. It's about courage, self-belief, creativity, and redefining what's possible when you stop waiting for permission. We dive into:How Lydia went from struggling through short runs to creating multi-day ultrarunning projectsWhy self-created challenges can be more powerful than racesThe mindset shift that helped her stop fearing failureHow she mentally navigates dark moments during 300-mile effortsWhy enjoying your runs matters more than “grinding”How storytelling gives meaning to hard effortsWhy you don't need elite talent to do extraordinary thingsIf you've ever thought:“Could I do something bigger… or is that not for me?”This episode will change how you think about your limits — and what you're capable of building over time.SHOW LINKS:Register for our race, The Desert Peak Ultra 100K + 50K at desertpeakultra.comWant to work with me to crush your next ultramarathon in our group coaching program? If you're training for a big race and unsure how to structure your training block, this episode gives you a repeatable framework you can use for any A-race, at any distance.I'm using my preparation for the Western States 100 as the real-world example — not to list workouts or weekly mileage, but to show you how to think about training so you can build a plan that actually moves the needle. In this episode, we cover:• How to set goals that force real growth (without selling yourself short)• The 5 pillars of ultra performance and how to identify your biggest limiter• How to decide whether durability, speed, fueling, mindset, or execution deserves priority• Why most runners train hard but still miss their potential• The mistake athletes make when they plan too early — or too late• How to structure training when your race isn't guaranteed yet (lotteries, waitlists, life)• Why aiming bigger almost always leads to better outcomes, even if you miss the goal• How to avoid building a plan that looks good on paper but fails on race day• The difference between “being fit” and being race-ready• How to think in training blocks instead of workouts• How to balance ambition with sustainability so you don't burn out• Why your biggest gains often come from fixing one key weakness — not doing more• How to design a flexible plan that adapts as your life and training load changeThis isn't a “here's my Western States training” episode. It's a blueprint for building smarter training blocks — with Western States as the case study.SHOW LINKS:Register for our race, The Desert Peak Ultra 100K + 50K at desertpeakultra.comWant to work with me to crush your next ultramarathon in our group coaching program? Today's episode is special.Because today's guest is someone who embodies the true meaning of Everyday Ultra — not just in the miles she runs, but in the life she leads.Britt Westdyke is a mother of five, a full-time leader at work, a wife, an advocate for running moms everywhere, and an athlete who has rewritten what's possible for herself by showing up on the hardest days — and every day in between.Over the past two years of coaching her, I've watched Britt rebuild her identity, discover her strength, and chase massive goals with patience, grit, and purpose. She's finished the EldenCrest 38. She's crushed her local six-hour race. She's battled struggle, burnout, cross-country home moves, childcare chaos, and the emotional weight that comes with all of it — and she's still stood on start lines with fire and belief. In this episode we break down:• How Britt found ultra running during one of the most overwhelming seasons of her life• Why chasing a big goal made her a better mom, wife, and leader at work• The truth about mom guilt — and how she reshaped it into purpose• How she trains consistently with five kids, travel, work, and zero free time• What to do when chaos derails your plans, and how to keep moving forward with confidence• Why patience (not talent) is her secret weapon for long-term endurance progress• The power of having a supportive partner — even if they don't run a single mile• Her advocacy work with For All Mothers & Strava, and how she's helping other moms get to their start lines tooThis conversation is real, raw, and packed with wisdom for every runner — parents or not.If you've ever felt stretched thin… if you've ever doubted whether you could take on a big goal… if you've ever wondered whether you're capable of more…Britt's story is your proof. And trust me — you're going to walk away believing that you can do hard things, chase gigantic dreams, and still show up for the people you love.SHOW LINKS:Want to be coached by me and my team to crush your next ultramarathon in our 1:1 coaching program?
