Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for November 9, 2022 is: bilious BILL-yus adjective Bilious has several meanings, including "angry or bad-tempered" and "sickeningly unpleasant to look at." Its earliest use describes things that are "of or relating to bile." // The actor has come under fire for his bilious commentary. // The new homeowners immediately painted over the bilious color scheme. See the entry > Examples: "Inserting a character inspired by Big Daddy Pollitt in Tennessee Williams's 'Cat on a Hot Tin Roof' into a scenario patched together from three William Faulkner works, Orson Welles so thoroughly dominates 'The Long, Hot Summer' as Will Varner, the bilious magnate of Mississippi small town, that the other actors struggle to make themselves known." — Scott Tobias, The New York Times, 11 Oct. 2022 Did you know? Bilious is one of several words whose origins trace to the old belief that four bodily humors (black bile, yellow bile, phlegm, and blood) control temperament. Just like phlegmatic ("of a slow and stolid phlegm-driven character"), melancholy ("experiencing dejection associated with black bile"), and sanguine ("of a cheerful, blood-based disposition"), bilious suggests a personality associated with an excess of one of the humors—in this case, yellow bile. Such a personality may also be described as unreasonable, peevish, or ill-tempered, as typified by Charlotte Brontë in her 1849 novel, Shirley: "These two men, of hard, bilious natures both, rarely came into contact but they chafed each other's moods."

This is a meditation for our Christmas Eve Service.--I am indebted to my friend, Will Varner, for some of the ideas expressed in this message, particularly his chapter, -A Not so Silent Night,- in his -Anticipating the Advent- Looking for Messiah in All the Right Places-. Dr. Varner and I studied Greek together beginning in 1965, and he was a groomsman in my wedding.--'Suddenly a vast, heavenly army appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, -Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among people with whom he is pleased--' -Luke 2-13-14, NET Bible-.--Dr. Varner comments- 'In the Garden, He acknowledged that He had a spiritual army ready to be called to active duty- -Or do you think that I cannot appeal to My Father, and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve legions of angels--- -Matt 26-53-. In other words, Satan had his legions and Jesus had His legions. Is it a stretch to think that the legions of angels ready to do the bidding of their Commander in Matthew 26 are identical to the legions of the heavenly host --stratia-- that evening outside Bethlehem-- To borrow a modern expression, I think that the song sung to the shepherds the night of Jesus' birth was the celestial version of -Hail to the Chief.- In other words, that so-called -Silent Night- was the beginning of war-' -William Varner, -Anticipating the Advent- -Dallas, TX- Fontes Press-, pp. 63-64.-

Drop your buffs and hope for the best because many elements of Survivor come down to the pure luck of the draw. If it goes your way, you might end up on a tribe like new Ta Keo that will likely dominate the challenges and may never go to Tribal Council. If you end up on a tribe like Angkor, at a beach with no resources, about the most you can count on is having a good story to tell if you make it out alive and still in the game before the merge. How do you feel about the new tribes? Who gained the most from the shuffle? Do you think Jeremy will keep the HII to himself? Will Varner be able to recover? How far do you think Abi will make it in the game now? Will the original alliances survive the shuffle? Who do you think will be next to go? Here are the new tribes after episodes 3. It took three William Faulkner stories to make the sultry, southern classic film The Long, Hot Summer and one difficult movie icon to almost unmake it. Although Orson Welles was director Martin Ritt's one and only choice to play burly land baron Will Varner, the two clashed continually on the sticky Louisiana set. They would eventually make up after the movie was finished but Ritt seems to have definitely earned the moniker the industry gave him later -- the Orson Tamer. In stark contrast, leads Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward were in the throes of a love affair on and off screen and would eventually get married just two months after the film wrapped. Their union became one of the longest and loveliest in movie history. For episode 13, Dan and Vicky discuss the joys of watching two lead actors fall in movie AND real love on screen, compare this film to other Southern Gothic films of the time, and give their thoughts on the wonder that is Orson Welles. You'll also get the latest dope on the Pope, M. Night Shyamalan's newest The Visit, and Johnny Depp's take on Whitey Bulger. This one's a real barn burner! Hot Date with Dan and Vicky, lucky number 13!
