In this episode, Monika examines two important developments that shaped the economic conversation over the past week: the Reserve Bank of India's decision to keep the repo rate unchanged at 5.25%, and India's strong FY26 GDP growth of 7.7%, with the fourth quarter growing at 7.8%. She explains how the RBI's inflation-targeting framework and relatively low inflation of 3.1% have given policymakers valuable room to maintain rates despite the inflationary pressures created by the West Asia conflict and elevated crude oil prices. Revisiting the basics of the repo rate and its role in controlling inflation and credit costs, she argues that prudence always appears boring during good times but proves invaluable when crises emerge. The lesson, she says, applies equally to nations and to individuals managing their own money. She then turns to the growth story and why India's economic momentum remains intact despite rising global uncertainties. Looking at broad-based indicators including agriculture, steel, cement and commercial vehicle demand, Monika highlights that FY26 was a remarkably strong year and that India entered the current period of geopolitical turmoil from a position of strength. While the RBI's projection of 6.6% growth for FY27 reflects caution amid higher oil prices and global fragility, she argues that India's growth has merely been “shaved, not sunk.” Had the current conflict not erupted, the country was positioned to exceed 8% growth. She reminds listeners that the government and the RBI still possess several policy tools to support the economy, from attracting foreign capital to deploying monetary and fiscal measures. Her message remains consistent with previous episodes: prepare for a slowdown, but reject the merchants of doom. India may face turbulence, but it is far from crisis. In listener questions, Srinivas asks whether LIC annuity products deserve a place in retirement planning, prompting Monika to examine the broader case for and against annuities, discussing guaranteed lifelong income, simplicity and protection from market volatility, while also highlighting their low returns, inflation risk and tax disadvantages compared with alternatives like debt funds and systematic withdrawals; Bhavesh, an NRI with a carefully constructed 50:50 portfolio, seeks guidance on how to rebalance during market corrections and transition debt allocations as retirement approaches, leading to a detailed discussion on the hierarchy of redeeming maturing fixed deposits, arbitrage funds and debt funds while preserving long-duration gilt investments; and Rachana from Coorg shares her concerns about retiring early with a ₹1.25 crore corpus and no pension, opening up a conversation about longevity risk, healthcare costs, protecting capital, and the importance of continuing to earn for as long as possible in order to strengthen financial independence in later life.Chapters:(00:00 – 00:00) Why India's Growth Story Is Shaved but Not Sunk(00:00 – 00:00) RBI Holds Rates Steady as Inflation Stays Under Control(00:00 – 00:00) The Pros and Cons of Annuities for Retirement Income(00:00 – 00:00) Rebalancing a Portfolio: Which Debt Investments Should Go First?(00:00 – 00:00) Is ₹1.25 Crore Enough to Retire at 45 Without a Pension?https://www.pib.gov.in/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=2269286®=48&lang=2https://rbidocs.rbi.org.in/rdocs/PressRelease/PDFs/PR3855508EB4A59FF46F9B57BBA200AA250B8.PDFIf you have financial questions that you'd like answers for, please email us at mailme@monikahalan.com

Was Peter really the undisputed leader of the early church—or does the New Testament point somewhere else?In this episode of The Bible Sojourner, we walk through Will Varner's provocative article, “Was James the First Pope?” and explore the biblical and historical evidence that James, the brother of Jesus, may have functioned as the central leader of the early church in a way many Christians have overlooked. We look at the centrality of Jerusalem, James's growing prominence in Acts, Galatians, and 1 Corinthians, his decisive role at the Jerusalem Council, and the way both Josephus and early church writers seem to confirm his importance. Along the way, we also consider what this means for common assumptions about Peter, Paul, Roman Catholic claims, and even Protestant blind spots.Whether you agree or disagree, this is a fascinating discussion that challenges tradition and pushes us back to the text of Scripture. If you enjoy thoughtful conversations on the Bible, theology, and culture, be sure to subscribe and join the discussion in the comments.Chapter Headings00:00 Intro: Was James More Important Than Peter?00:00:47 Why This Argument Was So Eye-Opening00:02:06 The Main Thesis of Varner's Article00:04:35 James and the Centrality of Jerusalem00:06:23 The Gospel Expands From Jerusalem to the Nations00:09:55 Why Jerusalem Was Seen as the Center of the World00:12:25 James's Rise to Leadership in the Early Church00:15:18 Paul's Early Contact With Peter and James00:17:02 James, Peter, and John as the “Pillars”00:20:11 Peter Defers to James00:21:31 The Jerusalem Council and James's Final Judgment00:28:18 Paul Continues to Follow James's Lead00:33:35 Josephus and the Historical Importance of James00:36:29 James in Early Church Tradition00:42:09 The Letter of James and the Order of the Canon00:45:26 Why James's Leadership Matters00:50:09 Implications for Catholicism, Orthodoxy, and Protestantism00:54:06 Final Conclusions: Was James the First Pope?00:56:06 OutroArticle Written by Will Varner: https://cf.sbts.edu/equip/uploads/2024/05/SBJT-27.3-Was-James-the-First-Pope-Varner.pdfIf you have found the podcast helpful, consider leaving a review on Itunes or rating it on Spotify. As India updates the way it measures inflation, Monika explains why the revision of the Consumer Price Index base year from 2012 to 2024 matters and what it really means for households. Drawing on new data from the Household Consumption Expenditure Survey, she breaks down how the CPI basket evolves over time to reflect changing consumption patterns — from the decline of outdated products to the rise of digital services, transport, and other modern expenses. The episode clarifies how shifts in weightages, especially the reduced share of food and the higher share of services, will influence headline inflation and policymaking.Monika also explains why the CPI is an average that may not match individual experience, and how the new index should give policymakers a more accurate picture of real household spending pressures. She highlights that lower food weight may make inflation appear less volatile, while costs that matter most to many middle-class families — healthcare, education, housing, and services — continue to rise faster than the headline number. The key takeaway: inflation data is improving, but personal financial planning should always be based on one's own spending patterns, not just official statistics. In listener questions, Anonymous asks how global developments such as U.S. debt concerns, de-dollarisation, and shifting geopolitical power could affect Indian markets and whether investors should change their asset allocation or SIP strategy; Djay from Mumbai seeks guidance on retirement planning for couples and how to estimate and invest toward a child's education corpus; and Ramya Srinivasan writes about deploying proceeds from a property sale, weighing PMS investments against mutual funds, and the best way to move a lump sum into equity over time.Chapters:(00:00 – 00:00) What the New Consumer Price Index Means for You(00:00 – 00:00) How Changes in the CPI Basket and Weightages Affect Inflation and Policy(00:00 – 00:00) Global Risks, Market Crashes and Staying Invested Through Uncertainty(00:00 – 00:00) Planning Retirement as a Couple and Building a Child Education Corpus(00:00 – 00:00) PMS vs Mutual Funds and How to Deploy a Large Lump Sumhttps://www.hindustantimes.com/opinion/why-india-needs-a-new-gold-standard-101770307424675.htmlhttps://www.mospi.gov.in/uploads/latestreleasesfiles/1770893247472-Press%20Relase%20of%20CPI%20for%20Jan26.pdfIf you have financial questions that you'd like answers for, please email us at mailme@monikahalan.com Monika's book on basic money managementhttps://www.monikahalan.com/lets-talk-money-english/Monika's book on mutual fundshttps://www.monikahalan.com/lets-talk-mutual-funds/Monika's workbook on recording your financial lifehttps://www.monikahalan.com/lets-talk-legacy/Calculatorshttps://investor.sebi.gov.in/calculators/index.htmlYou can find Monika on her social media @monikahalan. This week, Monika breaks down the “inflation paradox” India is living through — where official inflation has collapsed to 0.25%, yet households still feel the pinch at checkout counters. She explains how the headline number hides a deeper story: if the impact of gold is removed from the Consumer Price Index, October inflation actually turns negative. An SBI Research estimate suggests that, excluding gold, inflation could remain below zero for the next two months. Food prices have fallen sharply, with vegetables down nearly 28% and pulses over 16%, creating a painful situation for farmers even as households see temporary relief.Monika unpacks why very low inflation is a problem for the wider economy. Weak prices signal weak demand, hurting production, wages and eventually jobs. Governments too suffer when inflation falls, because tax revenues depend on nominal — not real — growth. With the RBI's full-year inflation estimate cut to 2.6%, the number now threatens to breach the lower bound of the 2–6% target band, raising the possibility of rate cuts. She also explains why lived inflation can feel higher than official data: lifestyle choices — app-based shopping, food delivery, eating out — inflate household budgets far more than the CPI basket. For savers and investors, a lower-trend inflation world means lower bank FD rates and more moderate long-term equity return expectations, making equity allocation essential for retirement planning. In listener questions, Srinivas seeks guidance on managing a large education loan, bundled insurance policies, and family assets; Sampath from the US weighs whether to buy property in Hyderabad now or after returning to India; and an anonymous listener asks how to secure term insurance after a past cancer diagnosis. Ozempic-style appetite-suppressing drugs are coming for our dogs.Headlines are already calling them “Pawzempic” — implants that promise to “fix” the so-called canine obesity epidemic by turning off your dog's hunger. But here's the thing: our dogs don't feed themselves. In this FETCH First Friday episode, we dive beneath the headlines to explore what this trend really reveals — not just about pet health, but about us as guardians, consumers, and culture-makers.Because when we reach for a jab before we ask deeper questions, we risk missing the truth: obesity isn't the root cause — it's a symptom. What You'll Learn in This Episode* The rise of “Pawzempic” → How GLP-1 drugs work, what's being developed for dogs, and why the marketing is so seductive* The root causes of canine obesity → From ultra-processed pet food to lack of enrichment, environmental stress, and even our own emotional projection* The microbiome connection → Why weight is about more than calories, and how gut health shapes metabolism, inflammation, and wellbeing* The deeper questions → Are we unconsciously transferring human struggles with weight, control, and shame onto our dogs? What happens when we silence natural hunger cues instead of listening to them?* A different path forward → Species-appropriate fresh food, microbiome-friendly choices, emotional co-regulation, and practical, natural ways to support your dog's health — without shame or shortcutsWhy This MattersThis isn't just a conversation about weight loss. It's about the stories we're told — and sold — about our dogs, our bodies, and what “health” really means. It's about reclaiming our role as guardians, not consumers. About moving from control to connection. And about creating a life where our dogs thrive because we're finally willing to ask:✨ What's actually causing imbalance? ✨ Who profits when we medicate the symptoms instead of healing the system? ✨ And how can we step back into relationship — with our dogs, with food, and with ourselves?Your dog isn't broken. But the systems around them often are.Grab your copy of our guide to speaking with your vet, which is included in our free FETCH Starter Pack: https://www.learnfetch.com/pages/fetch-starter-packJoin FETCH First Light, our free Facebook group for like-hearted guardians https://facebook.com/groups/fetchfirstlightWSAVA Body Condition Score Guide: https://wsava.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Body-Condition-Score-Dog.pdfIf you would like to attend the Mind Body Spirit Festival in Birmingham UK November 14-16th, and would like to receive a 25% discount on one-day standard tickets, you can use the following affiliate link and discount code at checkout! The third amended complaint filed in the Southern District of New York involves six plaintiffs—Jane Does 1 through 6—who have brought claims against Darren K. Indyke and Richard D. Kahn, acting as co-executors of the estate of Jeffrey Epstein, as well as the estate itself and other unnamed defendants. The case, docketed as No. 1:19-cv-07675-GBD, seeks a jury trial and continues the broader wave of litigation aimed at holding Epstein's estate accountable for his long history of alleged sexual abuse and exploitationThe complaint underscores the plaintiffs' pursuit of justice against Epstein's estate following his death, placing responsibility on those managing his assets to provide restitution for the harm they allege they suffered. By naming “Roes 2–10,” the filing also leaves room for additional defendants who may later be identified as complicit in Epstein's crimes or responsible for enabling his conduct. Trigger Warning: This episode contains discussions of gambling addiction, abuse, cancer, and suicidal thoughts, which may be distressing for some listeners. Please take care while listening and step away if you need to.In this deeply personal episode of The Broke Girl Society Podcast, host Christina Cook opens the first chapter of a new series titled "A Letter to My Gambling Addiction."Through raw and honest storytelling, Christina reads a letter she has written to the addiction that once held her in its grip. She traces the journey from its initial allure to the devastating ways it became entwined with her life. It is about reclaiming a life once thought lost. Christina shares the truth of survival, the courage it took to step into recovery, and the role of community in helping her discover a life she no longer wants to escape from.If you have ever felt alone in the throes of gambling harm, this episode is for you. In this episode, we are joined by Eirásmin Lokpez-Cobo, EVP of Brand Strategy at República Havas Health, to dive into the insights from her team's recently published white paper, Equity in Action: Mapping the Multicultural Patient Journey for Inclusive Strategies (link below). This insightful paper sheds light on the systemic barriers and health-related behaviors that shape the experiences of diverse U.S. audiences throughout their patient journey. This is part one of our two-part series focusing on the multicultural patient experience. We start by building a shared understanding of the barriers that prevent engagement with health systems. From there, we uncover overlooked elements of their journey, such as the unique health priorities of multicultural patients and the sources of trust they rely on. Disengagement isn't solely rooted in mistrust, nor does the desire to achieve better health simply fade away. To truly "meet patients where they are," we must understand the where they are willing—and able—to go.Here's the link to the team's whitepaper: 24_RHH_WHITEPAPER_2_EQUITY-IN-ACTION_MAPPING-THE-MULTICULTURAL-PATIENT-JOURNEY-FOR-INCLUSIVE-STRATEGIES_LONG.pdfIf you have any questions, feedback, or just want to say hi, email us at medicalanthropology@havas.comCheck out Breaking the Code on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/breaking-the-code-havas-health-and-you-podcast
In this episode, Monika examines India's slowing GDP growth, which fell to 5.4% in the second quarter (June-September 2024), pulling the first-half growth to 6%. A sluggish industrial sector, slower urban consumption, and muted private investments are key drivers, while rural spending and services have shown resilience. To meet the RBI's projected 7% growth, faster economic activity is essential—a goal that now seems unlikely. Monika explores potential government spending and RBI rate cuts as possible solutions to reignite growth. Slower GDP growth affects everyone, from limited job opportunities and salary hikes to reduced returns for investors. Monika highlights the need for employees to enhance job security and for investors to maintain disciplined asset allocation. Avoiding reactive shifts between equities and safer instruments is critical to navigating these challenging times. The episode also introduces the government's PAN 2.0 project, which consolidates PAN, TAN, and TIN into a single identifier to simplify compliance for businesses. Monika reassures listeners that while this benefits businesses, individuals only need to verify their contact details to receive the updated QR-coded PAN card. Links to government resources for further information are shared. Listener queries explore diverse financial topics. Nagendra from Bengaluru asks about balancing active and index funds across market caps. Akhila, starting a new job abroad, seeks advice on debt repayment, emergency savings, and retirement planning. Varun from Chennai discusses efficient gold investments and portfolio management, raising questions about long-term strategies and intergenerational financial planning. I am joined by Micah Hanks of The Debrief to discuss the newly released UFO Report. On November 14th, one day after the UFO Hearing, the Department of Defense released it's All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office's fiscal year 2024 Consolidated Annual Report on UAP, which covers the period May 1, 2023, to June 1, 2024. That report was briefed to congressional staff earlier this week, and all UAP reports from any previous time periods that were not included in an earlier report. AARO received 757 UAP reports during this period, 485 of these reports featured UAP incidents that occurred during the reporting period. The remaining 272 reports featured UAP incidents that occurred between 2021 and 2022 but were not reported to AARO until this reporting period and consequently were not included in previous annual UAP reports.READ REPORT HERE ➔ https://media.defense.gov/2024/Nov/14/2003583603/-1/-1/0/FY24-CONSOLIDATED-ANNUAL-REPORT-ON-UAP-508.PDFIf you enjoy the show, please leave a 5 star review..!!To see the VIDEO of this episode, click or copy link - http://youtu.be/_kctWq7aves❤️ EXCLUSIVE FREE MERCH INCLUDED & BEHIND-THE-SCENES ONLY FOR MY SUPPORTERS ON PATREON ➔ https://www.patreon.com/paradigm_shifts/membershipVisit my website with Articles, Videos, and Podcast direct links - https://strangeparadigms.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/strange-and-unexplained--5235662/support.
