Let the show’s 5th year begin! LTS regular Micki Maynard turned me onto this one. Paul Newman and Sidney Pottier star as jazz musicians in Paris. Their love interests are Joanne Woodward and Dihann Caroll, repectively. Louis Armstrong plays a character called Wild Man Moore. If my synopsis seems superficial, that’s because I haven’t actually seen this one. But I love the cast, and I love the idea that Sidney and Diahann are doing something more interesting than playing that one Black person in the movie. So come discover this one along with me. A moment of remembering Joanne Woodward's Watson and then relating this podcast to a Watson line about his podcast, then we're all about part three of Three Gales on Sherlock & Co.
Happy New Year! Well no time like the present to kick off the new year with a mind bending podcast courtesy of Jennifer Shaffer and Rich Martini. Jennifer's web page JenniferShaffer.com has links to her "Uncorked" events, or to book with her directly, RichardMartini.com is where one can book a guided meditation with Rich. So the other day in my kitchen (and I don't know why it's the case, but I sometimes get a message or feeling there that someone wants to talk to us) President Jimmy Carter popped into my head. It of course could have been because he'd just passed away - but I try not to judge why someone shows up, or if someone shows up. I just leave it aside, and see what happens when we start the podcast. And as we often do, I left it up to our moderator on the Flipside, Luana Anders to suggest the topic for the day. And she told Jennifer: "Richard has someone who spoke to him yesterday." Which is accurate. And just prior to the podcast - literally a minute before, I remembered that happened, and I looked up Jimmy on Wikipedia so at the very least I had some of his background correct. as it is - at some point I call the King of England before Elizabeth "Edward" when everyone knows that's not her father's name. But Jennifer didn't say his name - just pointed out that she was seeing him when Winston Churchill showed up. (For historians out there, the story of Winston sleeping in the White House and seeing a ghost is old news.) As noted, when over the past ten years we have someone Presidential show up (We've had all chats with Hoover, FDR, Truman, JFK, Nixon, Reagan, Bush Sr.. and folks associated with the Presidency - Abe Lincoln, Mary Todd Lincoln, Andrew Jackson, RFK, John McCain - those interviews are in the books BACKSTAGE PASS TO THE FLIPSIDE (books 1, 2 and 3). Some of them are searchable on the podcast - Abe, JFK, RFK, etc... but it wasn't surprising what Jimmy said about seeing Reagan on the flipside, how McCain stopped by - and the legions of people who loved him were there to greet him. Interesting that he said Rosalyn was "with him" frequency wise - he spoke about the regrets he had from his life (associated with war) and the things he was proudest of. I asked him a question about a film project I've been working on - something only he would know about, the land case in Maine. Fun to hear him say it's a story "that should be told." He also talked briefly about people off planet - since he saw a UFO back in 1969, and says that the kinds of work they're doing are benevolent... nothing to fear. The same kind of things I've heard in the research behind CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE FLIPSIDE KIND. We asked him who he was surprised to see - and he mentioned Winston Churchill and Elvis - who was friends with him. Paul Newman showed up - I wasn't aware of their friendship, but Jimmy talked about Paul's food charity work, and we asked Paul some questions about his journey, including what it was like to welcome his wife Joanne Woodward home. So while one is watching the nation mourn this President, while the nation has a funeral for him, honoring him and his service, be aware that he hasn't disappeared or is gone: he's just not here. Available. Like everyone is. Hope this helps.

Flying out the gate like the Ultimate Warrior, today we gots 7 more 70's movie reviews, and here…they…are! first up is (The Yakuza 1974) With Robert Mitchum (I'm just starting the whole chapter about him in Roger Eberts book- Life Itself) Ken Takakura, The best friend of Logan in Logan's Run, The Dad who hired Mr. French in Family Affair, and Stanley from the Golden Girls are all here with Mitchum in this. Is this Movie good, we like Director Sydney Pollack, and Writer Paul Schrader, but can they pull it off? Let's see, shall we. Next up is (Adventures of the wilderness family 1975). We are continuing our odd ass journey of Robert Logan's nature/adventure films. This is the one with 2 sequels, kind of afraid of them, oh my, this is silly enough. Onward to (Bullet Train 1975). Ashes liked this one best for it's rad historical context. Also important to watch as stupid Americans, to learn that SPEED totally ripped this one off. Filmed entirely on location on the bullet train between Tokyo and Hiroshima, also Ken Takakura is back here. More of Ken to come. Travel with us now to skull island and (King Kong 1976) It's got issues and it kinda sucks, but also with that, there's a lot of cool people here, bein weird, especially Jeff Bridges. Directed by John Guillermin after he made a ton of money for the studio people when we made (The Towering inferno) in 74 so they threw a ton o dough at this thing here, Wait John directed Shaft in Africa, heck yeah! Moving on we gots (Slap Shot 1977) George Roy Hill is our director here, with one of my favorite screenwriters Nancy Dowd, who if someone could just chuck some dough at us and this pod I would love to interview, while she is still around to interviewed plz, to all you rich benefactors out there. Is something wrong with me that I think the Hanson Brothers are simply adorable. Next today we review (Every which way but loose 1978)That punching movie with the Orangutan Clyde, also Maude's shotgun scene is priceless. Gee it's also kind of an anti Fascist picture, not as fiercely anti fascist as the blues brothers, but I think it still counts, there is much nazi punching. Hey our direct here James Fargo made the 80's cult masterpiece Voyage of the rock aliens in 84, can't for the Vintage video 80's podcast to cover that one, also VVP stay out of our lane eh. finally today we review yet another made for TV 70's movie that snuck some greatness under the radar (See how she runs 1978) Joanne Woodward plays a teacher who just wants to run in the Boston Marathon but oddly has to battle the world and even her family just to do so! Drop us a review and all the dang stars if you like what you hear, and thank you muchly for listening.

It's Friday, July 19th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Pakistani Muslims gunned down Catholic father of four A 29-year-old Pakistani Catholic father of four young children was gunned down by Muslim neighbors last week after he objected to their harassment of Catholics in the area, reports Morning Star News. Marshall Masih of Lahore was the sole breadwinner for his elderly parents, wife and four children – who ranged from 10 years old to 18 months old. Please pray God's comfort for the Masih family. Biden could withdraw from race imminently President Joe Biden is taking calls to step aside as the Democratic presidential candidate seriously and multiple Democratic officials think an exit is a matter of time, reports Reuters. Biden, 81, who recently contracted contracted COVID while campaigning in Las Vegas, has faced increasing pressure from heavyweights in his party to cede his position at the top of the ticket after a shoddy debate performance against former President Donald Trump as well as demonstrable mental acuity issues. Even Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York reportedly urged him to drop out of the race, reports ABC News. Describing assassination attempt, Trump said, “God is on my side.” Last night, as former President Donald Trump accepted the Republican presidential nomination in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, he described Saturday night's assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, reports The Epoch Times. TRUMP: “I heard a loud whizzing sound and felt something hit me really, really hard on my right ear. I said to myself, ‘Wow, what was that? It can only be a bullet and moved my right hand to my ear, brought it down. My hand was covered with blood. I immediately knew it was very serious that we were under attack. I proceeded to drop to the ground. “Bullets were continuing to fly as very brave Secret Service agents rushed to the stage and pounced on top of me so that I would be protected. There was blood pouring everywhere and yet, in a certain way, I felt very safe because I had God on my side. (cheers) I felt that. “And the amazing thing is that prior to the shot, if I had not moved my head at that very last instant, the assassin's bullet would have perfectly hit its mark, and I would not be here tonight. We would not be together.” Psalm 46:1 says, “God is our refuge and strength, a very ready help in trouble.” Trump opposes illegals invasion Biden has encouraged on southern border Trump described the difference between President Joe Biden, who has allowed the invasion into America at our Southern border, numbering 8-20 million, and the chart which he had referenced in Butler, Pennsylvania which saved his life as he looked toward it and escaped the assassin's bullet meant for his brain. TRUMP: “Less than four years ago, I handed this administration the strongest border in American history. But you can see on the chart that saved my life --that was the chart that saved my life -- I said, ‘Look at it. I'm so proud of it. I think it's one of the greatest. That was was done by the Border Patrol. One of the greatest charts I've ever seen. It showed everything just like that, you know, the chart. “Oh, there it is. That's pretty good. Wow! Last time I put up that chart, I never really got to look at it. (laughter) But without that chart, I would not be here today! (cheers) “I said, ‘You've got to see this chart.' I was so proud of it. And by the time I got to there … I never got to see it that day. But I'm seeing it now. And I was very proud. And if you look at the arrow in the bottom, that's the lowest level, the one on the bottom, heavy red arrow. That's the lowest level of illegal immigrants ever to come into our country in recorded history, right there. That was my last week in office.” Trump: "I will make America affordable again." And Trump vowed to fix America's crippled economy and cast a vision not only for American energy independence again, but American energy dominance. TRUMP: “Starting on Day One, we will drive down prices and make America affordable again. It's not affordable. People can't live like this. Under this administration, groceries are up 57%, gasoline is up 60 and 70%. Mortgage rates have quadrupled. The total household costs have increased an average of $28,000 per family under this administration. “Republicans have a plan to bring down prices and bring them down very, very rapidly. by slashing energy costs. We will in turn reduce the cost of transportation, manufacturing, and all household goods. “And remember, we have more liquid gold under our feet than any other country by far. Under the Trump administration, just three and a half years ago, we were energy independent, but soon we will actually be better than that. We will be energy dominant and supply not only ourselves, but we will supply the rest of the world.” CBS News described Trump's 90-minute speech as the longest convention speech in modern American history. (You can read or search the transcript for key words through a special link at www.TheWorldview.com) News anchor Lou Dobbs has died Lou Dobbs, the conservative political pundit and longtime host of “Lou Dobbs Tonight,” on CNN and then Fox Business Network, has died. He was 78. After 30 years on the air on CNN, he announced his last broadcast on that cable news network in 2009. DOBBS: “This will be my last broadcast here on CNN where I've worked for the past 30 years. I'm the last of the original anchors here on CNN and I'm proud to have had the privilege of helping to build the world's first news network. “Over the past six months, it's become increasingly clear that strong winds of change have begun buffeting this country and affecting all of us. And some leaders in media, politics, and business have been urging me to go beyond the role here at CNN, and to engage in constructive problem solving, as well as to contribute positively to a better understanding of the great issues of our day.” Dobbs became known for his fight against illegal immigration, his warnings about Islamist terrorism, and his opposition to outsourcing when industrial jobs in the United States were being moved overseas, contributing to the economic and cultural collapse of small, industrial towns. Dobbs was also known for his pro-Trump coverage. Sitcom legend Bob Newhart, a faithful husband, has died And finally, comedian and sitcom legend Bob Newhart has died at age 94, reports Fox News. Known for his deadpan, stammering humor, Newhart, a comedian who left accounting, signed with Warner Records to record "The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart” which sold like hotcakes. He became known for "The Bob Newhart Show," a series which ran from 1972-1978 in which he portrayed a Chicago psychologist living with his wife. Later, he starred in another sitcom called Newhart, which ran from 1982-1990, in which he portrayed a Vermont innkeeper in a small town with eccentric characters. In his later years, he played the father of Buddy, the unusually tall elf in the 2003 Christmas movie starring Will Ferrell. Unlike many of his multi-divorced Hollywood friends, Bob Newhart was married to his bride, Ginnie, for 60 years. In fact, on an awards show, Newhart shared this story about his wife to whom he had then been married for 40 years. NEWHART: “I have to thank my wife of 40 years. She has kept me grounded. She never lets me get too full of myself. “We have in California -- on Wednesdays, they pick up the garbage and you have to recycle it, you know, take plastic and the paper and that all goes in one, one place. “And very often late Tuesday, my wife will say to me, ‘Honey, would you take out the recycling? They're picking it up tomorrow and you got to separate it.' I will say to her, ‘Do you think Joanne Woodward asked, asked Paul Newman to recycle the, the cans and the plastic?' And she said, ‘If you were Paul Newman, I wouldn't ask you to do it.'” Proverbs 17:22 says, “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Friday, July 19th, in the year of our Lord 2024. FIRST TO LEAVE THE PARTY is a marvelous and compulsively readable collection of stories from the life of Salah Bachir—a philanthropist, art collector, and movie industry insider. His sheer joy of life, art, giving back, and human interaction has endeared him to some of the most famous and creative people in recent times. Salah's activism is evident even on the cover of his memoir, where he sought to normalize discussions around gender identity by including his pronouns.Salah Bachir, who immigrated to Canada from Lebanon in the 1960s, has been a gay activist who has worked in the film world for over four decades. While this has given him undeniable front-row access to Hollywood's biggest stars, it is Salah's personal charm and kindness, his philanthropy, his overall style (think hats, scarves, brooches, pearls, diamonds) and deep involvement in the art world that has made him a friend, companion, confidante, and/or lover to so many — including Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, Joan Rivers, Mary Tyler Moore, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Edward Albee, Orson Welles, Aretha Franklin, Norman Jewison, and Elizabeth Taylor — although it's true that Katharine Hepburn once turned him down, very nicely. Jack T. Leyton has been a lot of things in his life: an Air Force serviceman, a set-construction worker for motion pictures, a postal carrier, a delivery driver, he even attended multiple acting schools for a time. But none of these actually describe who Jack is at heart: a writer, wordsmith, poet and hopeless romantic. This episode offers an intimate conversation with Jack T. Leyton, shedding light on his diverse creative life as a writer and poet. The discussion showcases Leyton's most beloved music and poetry, his time working at Burbank Studios, his musical aspirations, and the deep influence of his military service in the Vietnam War. Leyton shares profound insights on the role of art in society and his personal experiences, including the impact of heartbreak on his work, living in his car, and his travels across Europe. There is also a critical exploration of societal pressures, personal inhibitions, and the need for creativity in shaping his life and art. Moreover, Leyton voices concerns about society's trajectory, particularly through poems like 'The Last Generation on Earth'. The conversation wraps up on a poignant note, exploring themes of love, passion, regret, and the unique challenges of a writer's life. In 2017 Jack approached Steve with an inch and a half tall notebook full of lyrics, a head full of melodies and a demonstration CD with 13 songs arranged by Los Angeles band-leader Chris Glick recorded straight from the demo instruments in Finale. In 2018 Jack decided to go for broke and record as many songs as possible with a live band in a major studio in a short amount of time. The session almost didn't happen: six months before what would become the actual session, a heart attack forced the postponement of our scheduled date. On March 9, 2018, eight session musicians, five singers, eight cameras and various personnel assembled in Burbank California to record five songs from Jack's lyric book and turn them into something people would notice. The resulting album, The Clearlake Sessions included a sixth song, recorded later that year and featured the illustrious Satin Dollz on Sparky's Burgers, a rip roaring 1940's-50's jingle in the style of The Andrews Sisters. Jack and Steve note the difficulty of relying on others to get your musical ideas out (Jack doesn't play an instrument), and Steve shares about how he only recently overcame his difficulty expressing himself through lyrics. Jack found an important outlet in poetry circles, and when asked "Why do you do this?" Jack says “We do this because we can't not write.” John C. Jeske y John A. Trapp, La Biblia Popular (Milwaukee, Wisconsin: Editorial Northwestern, 2002), p. 166.

This week Izzy and Murtada welcome Isaac Butler, author of "The Method: How the Twentieth Century Learned to Act.” The trio discusses the scourge of biopics, how the standards of what is considered “good” or “bad” have changed over time, and how the Method redefined masculinity and what's considered “fuckable” on screen but still gets such a bad wrap. Some of the actors discussed (though not all are Method) include Marlon Brando, Kim Stanley, Joan Crawford, John Garfield, Sally Field, Daniel Day Lewis, Nicholas Cage, Joanne Woodward, Al Pacino, Jennifer Garner and Robert De Niro.
