What does the world look like from the perspective of a teen girl? The answer is not simple or straightforward. There are probably millions of different answers to that question in fact. In our case we present you with the answers from four different bands: The Blake Babies. Lush. Beach Bunny. Juliana Hatfield. I find these visions of young life to be captivating and simple. Exciting and confusing. The view of relationships and the world around us is reduced to simple elements within which reside highly complicated emotions. Hope for Christmas (S2 | E102) The Lester the Nightfly Holiday Music Interview Yes. That's right. A holiday show just prior to Thanksgiving. In a word, our crack team at LTNF is "UNAPOLOGETIC!" We love Christmas and we don't care who knows it! This is our second sit-down with Hope. We helped her celebrate the release of her 2022 record Before We Take Our Leave here, and here. Thank you Hope Griffin for so much new Christmas music for this season. Hope for Christmas this week on Lester the Nightfly. Born in Anchorage, Alaska, Hope Griffin was literally born into music. Surrounded by a musical family, she began singing and performing when she was very young. Hope first got turned onto the idea of writing her own music when she received a guitar at age 17. She attended Carson-Newman University and went on to receive a Bachelors degree in classical voice. It was there that her true flair for songwriting developed. Hope's drive to perform her original works was launched after winning a songwriters contest in college in 2007. She eventually moved to Asheville, North Carolina where she began introducing her angelic vocals and folky lyrics into the music scene. Hope quickly began to rise as an Asheville favorite. In 2012, her debut single “Hanging In The Balance” made international radio play. She was recognized in regional publications such as the Herald-Journal, The Mountain Xpress, and The Daily Times. Indian Classical Music with Flautist Nitin Ron Part 2 (S2 | E76) What a pleasure it has been to get to know Indian Classical Music with Flautist Nitin Ron, my guest these past few weeks on Lester the Nightfly. We met at an event in the West Village in Manhattan in 2021. After some back and forth we conceived this show about mindfulness, meditation, neuroscience, and Indian Classical music. And it all came together beautifully. You can judge for yourself by listening to our part one of a two-part series. Author's Note: This is exactly the reason I do this radio show. I get to meet wonderful people, learn about the unfamiliar, and, maybe, contribute a tiny bit of musical scholarship to the world. Indian Classical Music with Flautist Nitin Ron. About Dr. Ron Baby doctor(neonatologist!) TED speaker, author, and neuroscience researcher, climbed Mt. Everest. Dr. Nitin Ron. Meditation. New life. High altitude hiking in the Himalayas. Listen to Neonatologist and mountaineer, Nitin Ron connect all three of these experiences in this extensive exploration of Indian Classical music. Indian Classical Music with Flautist Nitin Ron. Nitin is a neonatologist (baby doctor!) who loves high altitude trekking and mountaineering. An associate professor of pediatrics at New York Methodist Hospital, Nitin loves to use innovative methods to teach medical students. He has also been leading a research project in the Himalayas, including the Mt. Everest region, involving ultrasound of the eye (optic nerve) and the body, to predict mountain sickness. He has also looked at the effect of meditation in acclimatizing the body to high altitude. Nitin also volunteers as an art guide at the Rubin Museum of Himalayan Art in New York City, as a reminder to himself that medicine is as much art as it is science. CHINA CRISIS (S2 | LTNF LIVE) Not a lot of great music was happening for China Crisis prior to 1985. They punched out a couple of albums but were being overshadowed by the many many synthpop bands busting out of England at the time. Then their label, Virgin Records, made a suggestion. "How 'bout we bring in some out-of-town talent. Namely, Steely Dan's Walter Becker." And suddenly, this unremarkable band became... well... remarkable. China Crisis, Frazier Chorus, Naked Eyes, The Dream Academy, The Thompson Twins, The The, Aztec Camera, Kajagoogoo... this week on LTNF LIVE About China Crisis China Crisis are an English new wave and synth-pop band. They were formed in 1979 in Kirkby, near Liverpool, Merseyside with a core of vocalist/keyboardist Gary Daly and guitarist Eddie Lundon. China Crisis were part of a wave of new Liverpool acts in the late 1970s and early 1980s, led by OMD and also including Echo and the Bunnymen, The Teardrop Explodes, A Flock of Seagulls and Frankie Goes to Hollywood. Sharing an affection for Steely Dan, David Bowie, Brian Eno and Talking Heads, Gary Daly (born 5 May 1962, Kirkby, Knowsley, Merseyside) and Eddie Lundon (born 9 June 1962, Kirkby, Knowsley, Merseyside) played with various Knowsley post-punk groups. Daly then spent time tinkering with synthesizers and a drum machine. Along with Lundon, Daly began writing songs. The pair eventually asked drummer and percussionist Dave Reilly to join them, and in 1981 they released their debut single "African and White" as China Crisis on the independent record label, Inevitable. In March 1982 they recorded a four-song Peel session for the BBC. In June 1982, they backed Tom Verlaine at The Venue in London. The band were signed to Virgin Records and recorded their debut album, Difficult Shapes & Passive Rhythms, Some People Think It's Fun to Entertain, which was released in December 1982. A re-release of "African and White" reached No. 45 in the UK Singles Chart in August 1982. The follow-up single, "No More Blue Horizons", released in October 1982 had little success, but the single "Christian", made UK No. 12 in early 1983 and brought them to national prominence. By the time of this success, Reilly had left the band, but had remained with the band long enough to co-write and perform on "Christian", along with session musician Steve Levy playing oboe and saxophone. The album peaked at No. 21 in the UK Albums Chart] During this period the band toured supporting Simple Minds on their New Gold Dream tour. He progressed by playing the trumpet in various school bands, singing in the choir, and performing in musicals.   In his 20’s, Stephen was inspired by his brother, Scot Evans, who was the bassist/vocalist in the regionally successful band, Floating Men, from Nashville, TN.  So Stephen started his own rock band, Mean Season, in the late 80’s where he began honing his songwriting skills on the guitar.  After a few years of local success and radio play in Tallahassee, FL, the band moved to Atlanta, GA to increase their success.  Unfortunately, the band broke up, and left Stephen to try his hand at performing solo around Atlanta.  Soon the jammed highways of the big city drove him to the beautiful mountain town of Asheville, NC in 1996, where he quickly began soaking in the creative influence of his amazing surroundings.  After many years of vacillating between being a professional musician and being building a nest in Asheville, Stephen has focused on his love for creating and performing music.  In June of 2015, Stephen released his debut CD, “Something to Bleed”, with his band, the True Grits.  The record received local and national praise for its passion and creativity.  The band members are Brian Shoemaker (bass/electric guitar)  Sam Hess (drums) and Woodstock (mandolin), along with special guests:  Halli Anderson of River Whyless (violin/backing vocals), his brother, Scot Evans of Floating Men (bass on ‘1000 Roses), and his mother, Barbara Evans (backing vocals on ‘Sound’).   The latest EP release, “Under the Bridge” came out in 2017 to positive reception and local radio play as well.  This record was engineered by Kyle Corbett, who can occasionally be seen joining the True Grits to provide colorful lead guitar for the live band shows.  The EP has 5 songs that range from rock to folk rock and describe an appreciation of Stephen's time in Asheville. Shawn Duxbury, Stephen's former bandmate in Mean Season, is a guest Grit performing lead acoustic guitar on the song 'Waiting'. The last track, 'A Rose for Emily', is a cover song written by Jeff Holmes & the Floating Men, and is based on the short story by William Faulkner of the same name.  Stephen’s strong melodic songwriting style is a blend of creative imagery of darkness and hopeful optimism.  There is no denying the passion that shines through with his powerful vocals and lyrics.  Songs like ‘The Garden’, ‘Cherokee Hills’, ‘1000 Roses’ and ‘Shining Star’ are beacons of his folk rock songcraft.  With some local radio play on WNCW 88.7, 103.7 WPVM, and 98.1 The River, and upcoming shows with the True Grits as well as solo shows spreading around the Southeast, be sure to check out what Stephen Evans wants to share with you.

Today's guest deejay is Jonathan Ammons, a journalist, radio producer, and musician living in Asheville, North Carolina. You can find his music on Bandcamp and listen to his radio show from WPVM and Pacifica Radio Network at the Dirty Spoon. Jonathan is yet another amazing person I was introduced to through my old friend, Steve Howard (listen to Steven's SOUNDWAVE mix here). Meeting Jonathan is one of the unexpected pleasures in the evolution of SOUNDWAVE. I launched SOUNDWAVE to help cope with the stress of the pandemic. In the first few months of COVID-19 it seemed that stepping outside your house might kill you. If that wasn't terrifying enough, my family was scattered about the country so for a long time it was just me and my dog. That took a toll on me and my usual distractions, music, reading and television, could not hold my interest at all. In fact, they annoyed me or angered me. The only thing that provided any comfort was ambient, classical, experimental and instrumental music. I reasoned that if that music was giving me solace it might help others as well so I launched SOUNDWAVE. Very soon afterwards I decided to invite the talented people I know who might enjoy or, more importantly, need to share a mix of their own. And that very quickly led to asking my friends who they knew personally who might want to participate in the show. That decision introduced me to such wonderful people as Adrian Utley, Hannah Peel, Charles Hazlewood and Jonathan. I don't really know Jonathan, though. We've just had a few email exchanges arranging today's show but through his mix I feel I know him more intimately than I might know him through a dozen conversations. That's all projection, of course, but that is the power of music. It bypasses the rational and hits on emotional truths, which is why I launched SOUNDWAVE in the first place. Jonathan Ammons “Wishful Thinking” Tim Hecker “Chimeras” Wojciech Golczewski “Abner's Wake” Jonathan Ammons “Open Eyes” Ben Goldberg “Demonic Possession is 9/10ths the Law” Oliver Patrice Weder “Sol's Lullaby” Ian William Craig “Mountains Astray” Goldmund “The Flag of Columbia Shall Float O'er Us Still” Villages “Life Expectancy” Jonathan Ammons “Dead Leaves” --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/soundwavemix/message

This week's podcast has a twist. In this interview, I am the guest on Laura Wagenecht's popular IN AWE radio program on WPVM 103.7.  IN AWE exists to bring awareness to all aspects of leadership as a woman: climbing the ladder to success, sexism, racism, agism, being the only woman in the room, trying to be superwoman and parent children and work full-time, women’s bias against other women, women in the military, and women in a variety of industries.   I'm honored to share my story and lessons learned along the way; some of which are specific to being a white woman born in the United States in the early 70's and evolving as executive in the 90's, and some of which are gleaned from my work with thousands of high performers in their own pursuit of achievement, wellness, and a life well lived.  In the interview, I talk a lot about the qualities of a Conscious Leader. If you'd like a one pager that distills this, you can request it here.  If you prefer to watch the interview on video, you can view it on Pure Potential's youtube channel.  To learn more about Laura Wagenecht's work as principal and consultant with Mosaic Consulting, visit her website.
