Our conversation takes us deep into the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, which devastated the Swannanoa area, where the LEAF Global Arts Retreat will return in May 2025. Kelly reflects on witnessing entire forests altered overnight, neighborhoods displaced, and the eerie silence that followed—just sirens and helicopters in the dark. And yet, amid this destruction, life continued. Deer tracks in the mud, beavers rebuilding, and the community rallying together to heal. She shares how her daughter chose to volunteer in the hardest-hit areas, helping neighbors sift through the wreckage of their homes. We also revisit a powerful candlelight vigil in Asheville, where 2,000 people gathered—firefighters, faith leaders, and families—holding hands and singing Stand By Me in the face of so much loss. Through it all, Kelly's optimism shines. "Spring will come," she says. And she finds hope in the arts, music, and LEAF itself—a festival that has always been more than a festival. Tropical storm Helene devastated communities across Western North Carolina including Chimney Rock in Rutherford County, Swannanoa and Barnardsville in Buncombe, Crossnore in Avery, Old Fort in McDowell, Spruce Pine in Mitchell, and Hot Springs and Marshall in Madison to name a very few.This is not the first time that mighty waves of water have rolled through the region, causing devastation beyond comprehension. Poole, from which strange noises are said to emanate at night. Visitors have reported seeing ghostly soldiers, feeling chills near the Confederate burial grounds, and even catching glimpses of General Robert E. Lee, his figure silently wandering the cemetery grounds as if reliving his past. The Exchange Hotel 400 S Main St, Gordonsville, VA 22942 The Exchange Hotel became a Civil War hospital, treating thousands of soldiers. With its storied past, it's no surprise that ghostly nurses are reportedly seen tending to invisible patients. In the basement, which once served as a morgue, visitors have heard eerie moaning and footsteps echoing through the otherwise empty halls. The ghost of a Confederate soldier is a frequent sight, believed to be lingering, perhaps waiting to be reunited with lost comrades. Bacon's Castle 465 Bacon's Castle Trail, Surry, VA 23883 Constructed in 1665, Bacon's Castle has borne witness to rebellions, family feuds, and ghostly occurrences. Visitors report encounters with a woman in colonial clothing, believed to be Arthur Allen's wife. Paranormal investigators have witnessed furniture moving on its own and heard laughter in empty rooms. The house is a frequent site for ghost tours, with guides sharing tales of sudden chills, strange lights, and objects shifting mysteriously. The Martha Washington Inn & Spa 150 W Main St, Abingdon, VA 24210 Once a Civil War hospital, the Martha Washington Inn has its share of restless spirits. A particularly famous legend involves the spirit of a young nurse, known as the “Yankee Sweetheart,” who fell in love with a Union soldier. Guests report hearing her soft footsteps in the halls and glimpsing her shadow near the spot where her beloved died. Other ghostly sightings include Confederate soldiers and eerie bloodstains that appear on the floors before mysteriously vanishing. Gadsby's Tavern Museum 138 N Royal St, Alexandria, VA 22314 Dating back to the 18th century, Gadsby's Tavern is haunted by the mysterious “Female Stranger,” who arrived gravely ill and, upon her death, requested her identity remain secret. Seen frequently in Room 8, her ghostly figure leaves cold spots and an eerie sensation for those who venture close. Visitors and staff alike have also reported phantom footsteps echoing through the tavern's historic rooms. Sailor's Creek Battlefield Historic State Park 6541 Saylers Creek Rd, Rice, VA 23966 The bloody Battle of Sailor's Creek saw nearly 25% of General Robert E. Lee's army fall. Visitors report ghostly figures wandering the battlefield at dusk, and cold spots are often felt around the Overton-Hillsman Farmhouse, which served as a makeshift hospital. The battlefield is known for mysterious cries and the faint sound of cannon fire, as if the battle is replaying for eternity. The Public Hospital 325 W Francis St, Williamsburg, VA 23185 Established in 1773, the Public Hospital for Persons of Insane and Disordered Minds is the oldest psychiatric hospital in the U.S. Shadows, sudden cold chills, and unsettling whispers haunt the halls. Visitors report feeling phantom touches and hearing footsteps in rooms long since abandoned, with occasional sightings of patients in old-fashioned hospital gowns. Swannanoa Palace 497 Swannanoa Ln, Afton, VA 22920 This grand estate, built as a testament to love, is haunted by the ghost of Sallie Dooley, who is often seen near her stained-glass portrait. Visitors feel sudden chills and see objects move on their own, especially around Sallie's favorite rooms. Paranormal investigators have captured EVPs and other strange occurrences, making Swannanoa a popular stop for thrill-seekers. Bunny Man Bridge Colchester Overpass, Clifton, VA 20124 The tale of Bunny Man Bridge is one of Virginia's most chilling urban legends. Locals report seeing a man dressed in a bunny suit wielding an axe near the bridge, especially on Halloween. Some say he's the spirit of an escaped convict who haunts the bridge, while others claim the presence is something darker. Witnesses often hear unsettling noises like screams and whispers, making Bunny Man Bridge a must-visit for those seeking a real scare. I almost moved to both Brevard and Asheville. I also have dozens and dozens of dear, talented friends throughout East TN, WNC, SC, North GA, and FL. It's been hard to embrace that it'll never be the same, that so many are suffering. Words fell short in a time like this. Action speaks, and I had to do something. So, through the American Songcatcher network, I've been quietly building an initiative that will put instruments back in the hands of those who lost them due to the storm. Hurricane Helene - Part 2 with NC Christian Broadcaster John Owens     John Owens, an alum of the Family Life Ministries radio staff, now leads the Christian broadcasting outreach of the Billy Graham Evangelical Association, sending radio broadcasts into a wide area of the region devastated by Hurricane Helene. When our Greg Gillispie spoke with him a week ago -- just days after the monsoon-like rains washed away buildings, roads and even entire communities -- he said it is a challenge to get accurate information. In this second half of that interview, the lack of communication and the uncertainty of some social media posts and official announcements made it hard to find trustworthy news and lifesaving information. That dilemma faced by his radio staff in the immediate aftermath, and by people throughout the multi-state hurricane damage zone since then, has become a forerunner of this week's back-and-forth on who is giving accurate information, from state and Federal agencies, to local emergency managers, to eyewitnesses watching their real-world situations and hoping for help. Seventy years ago, Black Mountain College was a petri dish for experimental art, sound and performance. The long-time owner of the Swannanoa Palace on the Afton Mountain property has died; Acting Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards said yesterday that job applications to the department increased 74 percent during the first six months of 2023, compared to the same period last year; State coffers ended fiscal year 2023 with about $3 billion dollars more than predicted based on early data.

Hospice care in the United States is largely defined and shaped by health insurers and Medicare. The Center for Conscious Living and Dying, set to open this spring, is a new nonprofit in Swannanoa driven to reposition hospice as a communal passage. Host Matt Peiken talks with Dr. Aditi Sethi, the center's founding director; and Hannah Fowler, a registered nurse and the center's director of education. In this episode I have a conversation with those who are or have been prison chaplains. They get us started into understanding the nature and experience of the prison and ministry within that context. My guests are the Reverends Carol Sasser Dalton, Nancy Hastings Sehested, and Jody Griffin. For the past fifteen years, Carol has been and continues to be chaplain at Western (formerly Swannano) Correctional Center for Women in Swannanoa, North Carolina. Although she works within the prison system, she is employed by the nonprofit Ministry of Hope. In addition to work in the prison, Carol has also done chaplaincy work at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Asheville, North Carolina and Rutherford County Hospital in North Carolina working with patients experiencing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, other mental health issues, substance abuse, and end-of-life issues. Nancy is a retired pastor and prison chaplain. She served as a state prison chaplain in North Carolina for over a decade. Her chaplaincy included serving in minimum, medium and maximum security prisons for men. She was at Avery-Mitchell Correctional from 2000-2003. She was at the minimum and maximum security prisons at Marion Correctional from 2003-2013. She wrote a book about her experiences in Marked for Life: A Prison Chaplain's Story. Jody was a United States Army Reserve Chaplain with the 167TH Military Police Battalion and a Retired North Carolina Army National Guard Chaplain serving in United States Army and Navy confinement facilities. From 2016-2022 he was a community funded chaplain at Avery-Mitchell Correctional Institution. He is currently the pastor of Central Baptist Church, Spruce Pine, North Carolina and chaplain at Medi Hospice, Boone, North Carolina.
