Chinese warships in the Tasman Sea promp big calls to bump up the budget for defence ASAP. Also - the super-heated headlines about factory-to-school lunches and we talk to the international outfit defending public broadcasters from de-funding. Chinese warships appearing in what we like to think of as our ‘benign strategic environment' sparked something of a media frenzy lately - culminating in commentators claiming our defence spending's going to have to go up ASAP.Right now the two main public media networks in the US face bids to de-fund them - even though their federal funding is tiny. They also face MAGA-driven inquiries into bias and how they stay in business.Public broadcasters elsewhere in the world also face more political pressure on their funding and even their legitimacy these days. This week ask the boss of the outfit that represents them around the world: how do you defend against de-funding?Also: school lunches have been in the headlines ever since the new cheaper factory-to-classroom ones appeared this year - or not, in some cases. And isolated cases of things going badly wrong have certainly been seized on by the media. Just teething troubles blown out of proportion because of politics? Or are our media rightly demanding more transparency? Clive Langer in conversation with David Eastaugh https://newclang.bandcamp.com/album/new-clang Best known as one of the UK's most successful record producers with a string of high-profile credits in his portfolio, CLIVE LANGER returns in the new year with a second album from his band project, THE CLANG GROUP.A belated follow-up to 2016's Practice, the Group's maiden outing for Domino Records, New Clang was recorded with Deaf School co-conspirators John Wood (aka Max Ripple) and Gregg Braden, along with former Klaxons bassist Jamie Reynolds. Written and recorded in the aftermath of Clive's 70th birthday, New Clang is adeeply personal but incredibly vibrant album; catching Clive in reflective mode, the songs address the process of ageing and the state of the world,as well as confronting his own addiction to alcohol.“ After the pandemic, the dust settled, it felt like it was time, a new time, to play again,” he explains. “Not to revisit but to write and rehearse with my Clang Group mates. We were missing a bass player and fortuitously I met Jamie Reynolds and he filled the vacancy. The songs started to flow, we were back in the groove!”“The new album is the first sober songwriting I think I've done in almost 50 years,” he adds. “I've known and accepted that I was an addict for decades... I just didn't do anything about it. I thought I could live with it, I still enjoyed it. Someone once asked me ‘What do you do?' I replied ‘I drink'. Anyway, making an album sober was like making an album drunk except I wassober!!” Packaged in spare black-on-white, suggesting a tabula rasaof sorts, New Clang's distinctive sleeve artis the work of British artist Edwin Burdis, whom Clive met during his time with Domino Records. “Clive asked me to a studio in London to listen to his new album, still a work in progress,” recalls Edwin. “I was struck by the contrast between the upbeat music and its underlying melancholy, evoking clowns and cartoon characters and a nostalgia for London's recent past. At the time, I had been drawing simple cartoon motifs that aligned perfectly with Clive's songs. I wanted the campaign to be cohesive—black-and-white graphics that blend humour with a sense of tragedy and sadness.” A founder member of pioneering Liverpool art-rockers Deaf School, Langer is noted for a string of production credits (usually in collaboration with Alan Winstanley) on hits forthe likes of Dexys Midnight Runners (the no.1 single and album ‘Come On Eileen' and Too-Rye-Ay)andDavid Bowie(‘Absolute Beginners') plus numerous landmark releasesfor Elvis Costello, Madness, Morrissey, The Teardrop Explodes, China Crisis, Bush, They Might Be Giants, The Rockingbirds and, more recently, Fat White Family.

This week on Sinica, I chat with Michael Swaine, Senior Research Fellow at the Quincy Institute for the last couple of years, prior to which he spent nearly two decades as a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, where he led extensive work on Chinese defense and foreign policy, U.S.-China relations, and East Asian international relations more broadly. He was also a senior policy analyst at the RAND Corporation, where he developed a reputation for rigorous research on Asian security and crisis management. We focus on his recent report, “Avoiding the Abyss: An Urgent Need for Sino-U.S. Crisis Management,” which offers both a framework for understanding the forces driving U.S.-China crises and a roadmap to prevent or manage these crises effectively. He drew on his many decades of experience working on the security dimension of the bilateral relationship, including his participation in many Track II dialogues and simulations of crisis scenarios over the years.4:51 – Defining "crisis" and "crisis prevention" 10:13 – The possibility of a crisis in the South China Sea12:31 – Lessons from past crises 20:08 – The problematic moralistic stances and tit-for-tat escalation produced by yǒulǐ, yǒulì, yǒu jié 有理, 有利, 有节27:37 – U.S. concern over the credibility of its alliance commitments 34:50 – The problem of perception 38:16 – Examples of how each side is sometimes unable to see how its own actions are perceived by the other 41:20 – The dangers of failing to understand and making assumptions about the China's historical memory 45:42 – Problems of signaling and how best to solve them 51:17 – Mike's suggestions for a crisis toolkit and his proposal of a civilian-led two-tier dialogue structure 58:41 – Track II dialogues 1:02:47 – The importance of educating leaders up and down the system on crisis management 1:06:08 – The structural issues of the decision-making systems in China and the U.S.Recommendations:Michael: Art critic Brian Sewell's The Reviews That Caused the Rumpus; Robert Suettinger's The Conscience of the Party: Hu Yaobang, China's Communist Reformer Kaiser: The Great Transformation: China's Road from Revolution to Reform by Odd Arne Westad and Chen Jian See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Kirkby's finest, China Crisis, are the guests in this month's Misadventures in Music podcast with Ian Prowse and Mick Ord. Eddie Lundon and Gary Daly founded the band in 1979 and notched up a string of hits in the album and singles charts in the 1980's. They're still going as strong as ever and regularly touring the UK and Europe. Their candid tales of working with Walter Becker of Steely Dan and supporting and 'socialising' with David Bowie are the stuff of legend. Their musical influences might raise a few eyebrows (and smiles) as well. Oh yes, their sense of humour is as sharp as it ever was as you'll discover when you listen to this episode of Misadventures in Music.
NEVER!

I'm Allen Hall, and I'll be bringing you this week's top stories in the wind energy sector. We start with a significant announcement from Statkraft, the Norwegian energy giant. The company has revealed plans to reduce its target for building solar PV, battery energy storage systems and wind farms from 2026 onwards. Statkraft is adjusting its development rate for solar, battery and onshore wind from two and a half to three gigawatts to two and a half gigawatts. Even more notably, their offshore wind targets have been cut from 10 gigawatts to 68 gigawatts by 2040. This shift comes as Statcraft aims to prioritize investments in its home country of Norway. The company cites challenging market conditions for the entire renewable energy industry as a reason for this strategic adjustment. Despite these reductions, Stackraft remains committed to expanding its hydropower capabilities with plans to initiate at least five major capacity upgrade projects in Norway by 2030. Moving to England, the de facto ban on onshore wind development has been lifted with immediate effect. This decision is part of a broader commitment to double the capacity of onshore wind in Britain by 2030. and boost energy independence. The policy change places onshore wind on equal footing with other energy development in the National Planning Policy Framework. This move is expected to significantly accelerate the growth of onshore wind in England. The government has also announced plans to streamline the planning process for large onshore wind proposals by potentially incorporating them in the nationally significant infrastructure project regime. This could lead to faster determinations on planning applications for these projects. In corporate news, oilfield services firm Archer has made a strategic move into the floating offshore wind sector. For The company has fully acquired Moreld Ocean Wind, a Norwegian floating offshore wind solutions provider. This acquisition includes a minority stake in Osergy. U. S. French technology company. Morelde Ocean Wind specializes in project management and engineering for the fabrication and assembly of floating wind structures. With a team of about 30 engineers based in Norway, Morelde Ocean Wind is currently engaged in various studies and engineering contracts for some of the world's largest energy companies. This acquisition positions Archer to capitalize on the growing floating offshore wind market and support its energy customers ambitions in the energy transition. Exciting developments are also happening in Louisiana, where the state's first wind turbine has arrived at Avondale Global Gateway.
Tonight's guest is a passionate defender of free speech and a ferocious critic of censorship.Last time Steven Crowder joined Uncensored we locked horns on the subject of Alex Jones, airing our conflicting views on whether everybody deserves a place on a privately-held digital platform. Now it's censorship of an entire platform that's up for debate. The US House of Representatives has passed a bill requiring TikTok owner ByteDance to sell the social media platform or face a total ban.Critics say it's a trojan horse for sweeping digital censorship. One of them, professor Jeffrey Sachs, told me last week that the US government is far more likely to spy on him than China! Is he wrong? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Paul Simpson's band The Wild Swans burned briefly and brightly in the flourishing Merseyside music scene of the early eighties. They had one celebrated single in the indie charts but disbanded acrimoniously having failed to replicate the commercial success of their contemporaries like Teardrop Explodes, Echo and the Bunnymen, OMD, China Crisis, Dead Or Alive and Wah! . They say the best stories can always be found in the corners and around the edges of life and Paul's book 'Revolutionary Spirit - A Post-Punk Exorcism' is a case in point. It's a classic of its kind...highly praised by book critics and musicians such as Will Sergent and Bill Drummond. Which won't come as a surprise to people who know him because Paul's a born storyteller. 'Revolutionary Spirit' tells us what it's really like to be in a band, but it's also an authentic slice of social history of life from a vibrant music scene with a seemingly endless list of larger-than-life characters. And plenty of genuinely laugh-out-loud moments. Paul's tells his story in the new episode of the Misadventures in Music podcast with Ian Prowse and Mick Ord.

With two million active soldiers, China has the largest military in the world. But does it know what it's doing? Even with some of the most advanced military tech in the world their ability to use it is unclear. Laura Makin-Isherwood speaks to Timothy Heath, senior international defence researcher at the RAND Corporation, to find out if Xi's army is something we should be worried about – or if they have all the gear and no idea. "Xi's army has no experience operating large combat forces on another continent." “As the Chinese developed their economic ties, they are also sharing their preferred political values.” “The Chinese military conscripts a quarter of their force because they cannot attract enough volunteers.” www.patreon.com/bunkercast Written and presented by Laura Makin-Isherwood. The unauthorized entry of a suspected Chinese surveillance balloon into American airspace has provided a unique opportunity to examine the ability of Washington and Beijing to handle diplomatic crises. The incident leaves us wondering how the United States can better understand Chinese bureaucratic structure and decision-making and thus more effectively modulate its responses to unforeseen events. How will the two countries deescalate tensions when something more serious than a rogue balloon agitates the relationship? As the ability to interpret signaling accurately and maintain de-escalatory communication between the United States and China become more critical, so too will understanding the answers to these questions. In an interview conducted by Oriana Skylar Mastro on April 13, Tyler Jost and Susan Thornton help contextualize the spy balloon incident within China's bureaucratic decision-making. 0-1:26 Introductions 1:26- 5:38 Why was the balloon a big deal? 5:38-9:54 The (lack of) airspace regulations 9:54-18:24 The U.S. reaction 18:24-24:04 U.S.-China Crisis communication 24:04-26:54 Lightning round 26:54- Who owes who an apology? House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) made history by becoming the highest-ranking elected official to meet with a Taiwanese president on American soil since the United States established diplomatic relations with Beijing. On Wednesday, McCarthy, alongside a bipartisan congressional delegation, welcomed Tsai at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley. During the meeting, McCarthy called Tsai “a great friend to America” and emphasized the strong bond between the two countries, which he believes is stronger than ever before. The question of how strong the bond is remains, however. Would the United States respond militarily if China invaded Taiwan? To discuss this, Larry Elder is joined by James R. Gorrie, an Epoch Times contributor and author of “The China Crisis.” Gorrie criticized the Biden administration's policy of strategic ambiguity regarding Taiwan and its relations with China. He argued that the strategy was no longer effective and urged the United States to take more decisive action in support of Taiwan, including potentially arming the island and increasing military cooperation with Japan. On another topic, Elder is joined by Cully Stimson, a former deputy assistant secretary of defense for detainee affairs in the George W. Bush administration and now a senior legal fellow at the Heritage Foundation. Stimson, who co-authored the book “Rogue Prosecutors: How Radical Soros Lawyers Are Destroying America's Communities,” discusses the rise of rogue prosecutors who have been funded by billionaire financier George Soros and other organizations to take over prosecutors' offices and dismantle the criminal justice system, which they claim is systemically racist. These hand-selected prosecutors, including Kim Fox in Chicago and Alvin Bragg in New York, have issued indictments without substantial evidence. The Larry Elder Show is sponsored by Birch Gold Group.
