Welcome to this bonus episode with Kundan Baidwan and Sameer Gupta. Kundan and Sameer talk all about the Rootstock Arts' event Color Your Mind Festival, which is happening in Yerba Buena Garden this Saturday, July 27, 2024 from noon to 5 p.m.   (This episode was created in collaboration with Erin and Ange from Bitch Talk Podcast.)   We start with Kundan. Long-time listeners will recognize or remember Kundan from ... Season 1, Episode 40, Two Storied Nights, and Hungry Ghosts. She's been a friend of the show since that fateful day in 2018 when I waltzed into Zam Zam with Bitch Talk on their Bourdain Crawl. But, podcast-wise, it's never been about Kundan.   We learn that she was born in San Jose and raised in Fremont. She went to college in San Diego, and after she graduated, was off to Paris and then New York. She returned to The Bay around 2004. She says that SF was always close to her Bay Area roots. She's an artist (an amazing artist, I must say) who pays the bills by bartending at Zam Zam.   Sameer Gupta was also born in San Jose. When he was around one year old, his family began moving roughly every couple of years. His dad was in tech and took jobs all over the world. While his family was in Japan, Sameer picked up playing music. He says he "caught the bug" there and started playing drums.   When his family came back to the US, he stuck with drumming. It wasn't what his parents expected of him, but they encouraged him nonetheless. He went to college for music, where he was immersed in Western and Classical styles. He was gravitating more toward jazz, though. He played jazz through his time in and after college, and then he found Indian Classical music.   Sameer moved to New York City and stayed for about 15 years, long enough to form a music collective. A little more than a year ago, he returned to the Bay Area.   Then we hear how Kundan and Sameer met. It's a story that goes back to their respective childhoods. Their dads worked together before either of them was born. Their families lived in the same neighborhood and knew each other well. The two ended up in high school together. Beyond their families' histories, Sameer and Kundan both ran in creative circles around this time, and naturally gravitated toward each other.   Both Kundan and Sameer are the only creative people in their families, and we get to hear how that informs the art that each of them creates. They recognize the abundance of creativity in their culture, but distinguish themselves as individuals who set out to make art their life's mission. And Sameer speaks to the example that folks like him and Kundan can set for the next generations, who see more possibilities than they might otherwise.   Having grown up the entire time in the Bay Area, Kundan says she more or less always felt the influence of Indian culture. And Sameer talks more about what it can mean for their families to see them making a life out of art.   Then the conversation shifts to this weekend's inaugural Color Your Mind Festival. Sameer and Kundan intentionally invited young artists to be part of the event. There will be art, music, crafts, books, and more. Sameer says their intention is for the festival to be "adventurous," not what people might think of as a traditional Indian event. They want it to be approachable for as many folks as possible.   The festival's music will include North Indian Classical (think Ravi Shankar), South Indian Classical, and Sameer's group, the Jupiter Project. There will also be dancing between music sets.   Follow Rootstock Arts on Instagram.   We recorded this episode in collaboration with Bitch Talk Podcast at Medicine for Nightmares in the Mission in June 2024.

He also discusses how he realized the difference between millennials and Gen X in a work place environment and how Gen X is motivated by making a difference rather than making a buck. A little later on, Pipeman brings it back to the guys music and how this new album is an evolution of their music. On this episode of the Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman speaks to The Offering who have some awesome new music with a really great message they want to share with us on the show today. Pipeman starts by talking about how he has been saying for a long time that the hippies have turned into the boomers. The guys talk about the origins of the songs and dealing with their parents who are boomers themselves. They also discuss what happened to the punks and when did they turn pro government? Pipeman tells a story of how his ex was struggling to take a video on her phone and his reply was you're such a boomer. Pipeman goes on to talk about his kids who are so different, with two of them born in the 80's and two of them born in the 90's. He says the two sets of kids are so different, with the older ones being like Pipeman, but the younger ones not being able to relate to them at all. He also discusses how he realized the difference between millennials and Gen X in a work place environment and how Gen X is motivated by making a difference rather than making a buck. A little later on, Pipeman brings it back to the guys music and how this new album is an evolution of their music. He compares it to Hatfield of Metallica and how he hated his voice when he listened back to their earlier stuff, but he respects bands being able to evolve when often times the fans don't want them to. The guys talk about how much your physical body changes affect your music and how fans often times fault a band for changing their sound. They also touch on the snobbishness of the metal industry and how much metal is going to lose when Ozzy passes away due to the torch not being passed on. Pipeman touches on how one of the band members fathers passed away recently, but fortunately, managed to hear the album before he passed. He talks about how his father loved the music and said it was the best music of 2022. He touches on how lively his father was talking about it and it made it really special for him. You can check the guys out via social media on Instagram and TikTok @theofferingbandofficial and facebook.com/theofferingmusic. For merch you can head to theofferingmusic.com which is your one stop shop for all things The Offering. There's some awesome vinyl's and t-shirts for you to choose from.American progressive metal quartet, The Offering, a band conceived during chaos of extreme times over the past couple years. The Offering has a new release coming out on November 4th titled "Seeing the Elephant". This experimental collection of 10 tracks forms a rich and adventurous undertone, combined with heartfelt depth within the songcraft. The strong political undertones, in combination with the integration of those experimental processes, lead to this accomplishing our goal of making something that felt similar to that of a journalistic war photographer account. The album intimately connects the accomplished song-master to his cancer-stricken father. There are inflection points throughout Seeing the Elephant, but “Tipless” and “My Heroine”—featuring Indian Classical players Purna Prasad and Shuba Gunapu on the mridangam and veena, respectively—are especially poignant. We finished the album a week before my dad passed away, not before he could listen to it. He told me it was the greatest album he'd ever heard from me. I think so, too.”“Flower Children” offers tongue-in-cheek commentary on the peace inversion of hippies-turned-authoritarians“The one thing I wanted to do differently with this album was to make it feel more like a home-grown effort,” Nishad says. “I roped in one of my best friends from this journey, Zach Weeks of God City Studios, to help with the engineering. Zach is one of the most intelligent engineers in music right now—Kurt Ballou hand-picked him to God City Studios for a reason. He's got an incredible gift and passion for dissecting sounds. I would say that all of my mechanics as a producer came from the things I learned hanging out with him as a teen, so naturally, no one understood my engineering language and workflow better than Zach. Our guest today is Abhay Nayampally who was hugely influenced by his musician parents and entered the magical world of music. Having grown up playing instruments such as the Tabla and Piano right from the tender age of 5, he took a fancy to the Guitar around his early teens exploring it through jazz and blues. Abhay then felt the need to explore it in a rarely visited genre on the guitar, South Indian Classical music. Abhay, along with a significant number of Solo concerts under his belt around the world, has also had the privilege of sharing a stage and playing alongside some of the best-known Indian Classical and Jazz artists in the world some of whom include Ustad Taufiq Qureshi, Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia, Pt. Purbayan Chatterjee, Shankar Mahadevan, Pt. Yogesh Samsi, Louis Banks, Sivamani, Gino Banks, Rakesh Chaurasia, and Suresh Wadkar to name a few. He has also recorded for movies and ad campaigns with some of the best-known composers in the music industry including a few award-winning movies. He's also the recipient of the title Sangeeta Kalaratnam which when translated means, ‘Jewel of the Art of Music.' Abhay met his Guru and Mentor, the legendary Mandolin Maestro Vidwan U Srinivas under whose incomparable and invaluable tutelage, Abhay cemented his new style of playing and developed it into a polished and fine art form unique to the electric guitar. He is now currently the only Carnatic Guitar Artiste in the world performing and teaching the U Srinivas Bani (style) of playing the electric guitar. In 2021, Abhay released his self-titled debut Solo Carnatic Guitar album co-produced with internationally acclaimed composer/producer Sandeep Chowta which opened to a tremendous response. His album claimed the Number One Album Spot for the Apple Music All India Indian Classical Charts for more than a month & also made it to the final Grammy Ballot Round for the Best Global Music Album Award. He aims to bring Carnatic Classical, an ancient Indian art form, to modern audiences, within India and globally, making it more approachable, familiar, and modern without compromising on the traditional aspect of the music. Listen in as Abhay shares his amazing journey as a musician, his days with his Guru Vidwan Mandolin U Srinivas, the making of his debut album & his onward journey with music. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/the-third-eye1/message

Join your host Greg Howard Jr as he gets to the heart of what makes a musician tick with the incredibly talented SID SETH!Sid Seth is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who forms a blissful blend of soul and pop into his truly unique repertoire. Originally from Ahmedabad, Gujarat in India, he moved to New York five years ago to study at the Manhattan School of Music, and has been pursuing music in the city ever since.Emerging sublimely into the scene, the musician is releasing his new single “Simple Yet True.” Written in the depths of lockdown, he found himself alone in New York without friends or family. He confides, “I was feeling lost in a once bustling city that had abruptly fallen silent. I started painting without thinking too much, and unexpectedly produced a long forgotten image from my childhood which immediately inspired me to write this song.”Working alongside producer Kris Crawford (Ariana Grande, Shawn Mendes, Josh Groban), and Grammy winning mastering engineer Alex Psaroudakis, his latest endeavor came to life. With compelling conceptual approaches, Sid continues, “I wasn't sure what to do so I started painting. As a child, fine art was something I really enjoyed but I hadn't held a brush for years. As I started mixing colors, I saw an image that took me back to childhood. It brought me immense joy as it was a forgotten memory with my family.” Growing up, his mom introduced him to The Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, Boney M and Abba, while Sid's dad introduced him to the rhythm and melodies of Hindustani Music and Indian Classical music. Paired with the soul inspired tones of Michael Jackson and Ella Fitzgerald, Sid's enriching sound can be attributed to his vast musical influences.Exploring the idea that people find their own stories in art, “Simple Yet True” opens with the tender tones of an acoustic guitar. As a keen guitarist and pianist, Sid creates the perfect backing for his delicate vocal energy, as the track envelops with raw authenticity. As he sings, “If you look inside these waters lies hope”, his soul intertwines with intricate musicality and soulful-inspired pop. The warmth in his tone and the tremendous energy he possesses makes him a trailblazer of this time, with the familial comfort of art pathing the way for his resonating lyricism.Sid has performed in various venues in New York City, such as the Bowery Electric, Feinstein's 54 Below, and the Green Room, as well as multiple cities in India. Having recently graduated from the Manhattan School of Music, Sid has gained humbling acclaim from multiple critics and the likes of Opera News. Jeremy brings a pair of Indian compositions from very different ends of the musical spectrum: a steel strung guitar played like a sitar, and one of ten famous 'ragas to a disco beat'. Joining the dots between Indian Classical, '60s American fingerpickers and today, we also hear a new-ish release on show favourite International Anthem from reformed Post-Rocker Jeff Parker, and tuck into some 2010s electronic Afro-Disco from London's Ibibio Sound Machine. Tim shares a number of new discoveries, including the riotous contemporary Ghanian gospel of Alotgté Oho and a deeply psychedelic dancefloor freakout from Nico Gomez. We end with the new release from our friends at Beauty and the Beat, a tried-and-tested remix from our friend Kay Suzuki of some fantastic Guadalupian Gwoka. This is part of a rough series of more conversational, unplanned episodes reflecting on what's been on our record players recently and what we've been up to that we'll be releasing to patrons to say thank you for your support. Watch Pandit Harish Tiwari exclusive interview part 01. Pandit Harish Tiwari is an eminent Hindustani Classical Singer of Kirana Gharana. Kirana gharana is one of the Indian classical khyal gharanas, and is concerned foremost with perfect intonation of notes (swara). The central concern of the Kirana style is swara, or individual notes, in particular precise tuning and expression of notes. In the Kirana Gayaki (singing style), the individual notes (swaras) of the raga are not just random points in the scale, but independent realms of music capable of horizontal expansion. Emotional pukars in the higher octaves form a part of the musical experience. Another unique feature of this gharana is the intricate and ornate use of the sargam taan (weaving patterns with the notations themselves) introduced by Abdul Karim Khan under influence from the Carnatic classical style. He is most efficient disciple of Bharat Ratna Pandit Bhimsen Joshi. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/raag-giri/message

Madhuri Jagadeesh was born into a family of musicians and artists, trained in the Indian Classical arts. Her connection with jazz began as a six, when she heard Ella Fitzgerald'sTisket-a-Tasket. She learned the rhyme in school and her grandfather, a harmonica player, taught her other songs, including Stormy Weather that she thought was his composition! As a teen, she listened to jazz on vinyl. There were no opportunities in Bengaluru to sing jazz, so she joined an all-girl pop and rock band. Her training in Indian classical music continued but income came from doing retro and popular music. Her graduate studies were in psychology, sociology, and literature. She completed her Master's in Literature and became a learning and development consultant. She sang with a band that performed at weddings, clubs, and hotels. She met her husband, Jagadeesh, who plays guitar, in 1993, while auditioning for a jazz band. He introduced her to modern jazz, experimental, and fusion music. In 2006, they started MoonArra. Both were interested in European Classical music. MoonArra fulfilled their passion to create original music and to tell stories. In 2008, a friend and bandleader joined the organizing committee of Java Jazz 2009 in Indonesia. MoonArra received a special mention at the festival. Chai with Rai (Ep.25). In conversation with Ishita Mili where we sat and discussed the dance space in the U.S from a South Asian perspective and just as an Artist.  We discussed Ishita's view on the Indian Classical industry, her family and of course her company IMGE Dance. We dived deep into conversations about cultural appropriation, the joys and consequences of creating experimental work. The digital space and its progression, what that has done to the arts industry. Her vocabulary and voice as an artist.  He works from performing at Lincoln Centre to Seattle International Dance Festival. We also discussed DDCON, a question I have been questioning myself -- that should South Asian dancers in the industry have a fundamental knowledge in our culture and our dances? And how we are often boxed as either Classical dancers or Bollywood dancers.  So much we dove into and we talked that I can barely cover. This was a long one but definitely a juicy episode.  To watch the full episode: https://youtu.be/d-xuQGS6_6E  Social: Myself: https://www.instagram.com/chaiwithrai_/  Guest: https://www.instagram.com/ishitamili/ & https://www.instagram.com/imgedance/  Links: Myself: https://linktr.ee/raimuitfum  Guest: htthttps://linktr.ee/ishitamili  Hope you all enjoyed it and Thank you for tuning in. Osaka-born musician and inter-disciplinary artist moved to Kolkata, India after graduating art high school one week after the chance strains of a Sitar led to a love-at-first-sound of sorts. Navigating language barriers in a recently globalized India, he sought tutelage from Pandit Monoj Shankar of the Maihar Gharana in Kolkata who he would keep revisiting and living with over the years that followed in true Gharana tradition. His eventual long-term return to Japan in 2003 was the beginning of the third generation of Indian Classical musicians in Japan. Tadao has expanded since though, with eclectic global collaborations in Europe and the US. His recent success as an author of traditional Bengali cuisine which he learned from his Guruma and curation of a series of events celebrating South Asian culture in Japan has led to the establishment of his status as an unofficial ambassador of sorts that has been endorsed by the Indian Govt. and local Indian community. In this long-form conversation, we trace the beginning of his fascinating journey and discuss ideas on the role of global cultural exchange without from a space of fearless authenticity while paying respect to the source in the 21st century.   This episode is brought to you by:  www.holisticpianoacademy.com  (Get a 25% discount on all courses as a podcast listener here) Music by: www.everynowheremusic.com Text: www.tlwrites.com Produced by T.L. This is the next in my series of conversations with filmmaker Michael Wood, where we discuss some of poet C. Subramania Bharati's most famous and important contributions as a champion of women's rights. Bharati believed that women should be leaders, writing, in a poem entitled  "Pudumai Penn," that the "new kind of woman" he imagined would "write all the laws" for society. No advocate of women's rights has been more impassioned, in India or elsewhere, during Bharati's times or since - or more convincing.  Episode 4 features A. She writes: "This piece as the name suggests melts the listener's mood with its beautiful structure and scintillating Raga – the Charukesi. Lipbone Redding is an award-winning vocalist, guitar player, voice-strumentalist, storyteller, songwriter, author, teacher and traveler. He is best known for his one-man orchestra show; simultaneously playing, singing and making the instrument sounds with his mouth and without the use of a loop pedal. Lipbone incorporates a full spectrum of musical styles from American Roots and Jazz to throat singing and Indian Classical. Origins A free-range child, native to the swamps, farmlands and beach towns of coastal North Carolina, Lawrence “Lipbone” Redding cites his mama's Soul, Boogie, Blues and Disco records as early stylistic origins. As a young man he became interested in Art, Opera, Books and Theater and often dreamt of travel to exotic places. At 21 years old, no longer able to be contained by a small town, Lipbone escaped to New York City and discovered Improvisation, Comedy, Jazz, Modern Art, Dance and Performance Art. Lipbone's decade at the cultural crossroads sparked his curiosity and paved the way for future influences from around the globe. New York became a launching pad for what was to become a lifetime of travel and collaboration with artists and audiences alike. After a brief stint as an actor, carpenter, bartender and producer for the Museum of Sound Recording, Lawrence Redding accidentally became a NYC subway musician and adopted the name “Lipbone.” He made “funny” sounds while playing guitar. Curious folks would often ask, “what do you call that sound?” He would tell them, “It's my Lip Trombone!…My Lipbone!” Hence the name. It was there in the underground caverns that Lipbone Redding experienced artistic redemption, and honed the skills that eventually allowed him to travel and make a living wherever life took him: India, Europe, South America, New Orleans, San Francisco, and points between. “Music is like pollen that drifts through the air and becomes a seed in the imagination. Music is a carrier wave for revolution. With music, I speak with friends who I have never met. We tell each other, ‘Everything is alright. You are not alone.'” - LB Traveling the world making friends and music, Lipbone spends most nights on the road in his small RV, “The Beautiful Flying Machine.” Outfitted with solar panels, a kitchen and comfortable living area, he boasts waking up to some of the most stunning views on planet Earth. From his mobile headquarters, Lipbone makes art, writes songs, records music, perfects his vegan recipes, interviews fascinating strangers for his podcast, and shares photos and video of nature's beauty.  Recently Lipbone's live show was featured on PBS, On Tour with Lipbone Redding. The program has been seen by viewers nationwide. Most recently, Lipbone has released a digital album on his own label, Beautiful Flying Records entitled Return Of The Beautiful, co-produced by Mashti (Mads Nordheim). The two have collaborated on an earlier record entitled Runaway Snail, recorded in Goa, India. Both albums are available in digital format from www.LIPBONE.com, on Spotify and iTunes. With the decline of CDs and physical music merchandise, Lipbone has taken a new tact. Already making art and writing on a daily basis, he has been making small runs art booklets with full album Part of his DIY aesthetic, the physical objects that accompany the albums are a thought provoking collection of art, stories and lyrics.
