How often have you thought, "I'm just one Voice. How can I make an impact?" Turns out, your one Voice may affect more change than you could ever imagine. On the season finale, of ARRIVED. celebrating Women's History Month, I speak with my old friend, anti-racism and mother-and-baby home campaigner, Marguerite Penrose, about how she's used her Voice to affect legislative change – and reach over two million people in the process. Tune in to hear Marguerite's story of growing up in a mother-and-baby home in Dublin; how she's using her Voice to raise awareness for the rights of adopted children who were raised in Ireland's mother-and-baby homes; her experience being Black in a mostly all-white community in 1970s Ireland; and how a single act of telling her story has now led to Marguerite's Voice being published in an overwhelmingly powerful article on the BBC, garnering over two million reads. Marguerite also shares her tips for using your Voice to affect true change, and make an impact on your audience. Marguerite is an Irish-Zambian Anti-Racism and Mother and Baby Home campaigner based near Dublin, Ireland. She is also a Meditation, Reiki Master & Teacher. While Marguerite was born with congenital scoliosis, she is a true lover of life, of people – and a self-professed positivity queen! Questioning how productive you really are while WFH? Wondering how to switch off when your work life is your home life is your work life (and repeat)? Turns out, there are unique challenges women who work from home face, as we head firmly into a working from home revolution. Today on ARRIVED., I chat to female leadership journalist and author, Harriet Minter, about – why the language of contemporary women's magazines still assumes outdated tropes of women's work lives – even in 2021 – how Harriet came to launch the Women in Leadership section in the Guardian newspaper – how the post-pandemic hybrid work from office / work from home model could actually edge women out of promotions and career advancement – how to rethink your productivity (and that afternoon nap!) when working from home – why regularly working more than 40 hours/week can lead to disease – how to set better boundaries around your professional life so that working from home doesn't turn into 'living at work' Harriet's new book, WFH: How to Build a Career you Love Outside the Office is available now at all fine booksellers. Confused about how to get your Voice published in major media outlets? Worry that your story or personal brand isn’t unique enough? Having a solid PR strategy is a must – even for creative solopreneurs and small business owners. But pitching for publicity can be a mindset minefield for the uninitiated. Today on ARRIVED., PR and publicity goddess, Kristin Marquet, is giving you (and me!) the lowdown about why amping up your PR game is an absolute must when it comes to running and growing your business; the right way to approach and pitch editors; one exercise to pump up your mindset when pitching (and the realities of rejection); the difference between 'newsworthy' and 'credibility' when it comes to publicity (and why it matters!); and how to get media coverage, even if you have a small following, a patched together website or have never yet been featured in the media before. Have a dream to share your Voice by writing and publishing a book? Wonder how to create space through a membership that makes a true impact on your niche? Today on ARRIVED., I chat with an old friend from my London days, Rachel Hills, who has done both. Rachel gets real about the behind-the-scenes of penning a non-fiction book for one of the biggest publishing houses in the world; why the Voice of that book was born from her own sexual insecurity in her mid-twenties; how she flipped the traditional networking model on its head in creating her feminist networking community, PowerBitches Gather; the new challenges Rachel faced when moving from freelance journalism to running a startup; and how to rethink our mindset around charging for our professional contributions. Rachel is a feminist writer, producer, entrepreneur, and creator based in Brooklyn, New York. She is the author of The Sex Myth: The Gap Between Our Fantasies and Reality (Simon & Schuster); the founder of Powerbitches Gather, a high-touch peer support network for powerful progressive womxn; and Protagonistic, a feminist strategic communications consultancy. Show of hands: how often have you put your needs aside to accommodate the wants of others? How often have you felt burned out, resentful, or drained because you've put yourself and your Voice last? If you're raising your hand (like I am!) you may be guilty of breaking your own boundaries. Today on ARRIVED., I chat to the queen of healthy boundary-setting, Nancy Levin, about the no. 1 myth of boundary-setting; the sneaky ways in which we sublimate our own needs to accommodate others; why NOT setting boundaries is a subtle form of self-sabotage; how to reframe our perception of selfishness; and how to ditch the 'gold star' validation mentality to better show up for ourselves, our clients, and our friends – simply by prioritizing our own needs. Please stop whatever you are doing and fully commit to this episode today. We're covering a lot, and Nancy is going to blow. your. mind! Are you ready?! Today on ARRIVED., I'm getting real with actor, model, host, singer, voice-over artist, and unapologetic multi-hyphenate creative, Lauren Aparicio, about leveraging your many talents to amplify your Voice. It's almost Thanksgiving. The time of year we're supposed to put on a stupid nubbly sweater and 'count our blessings'. But what if – like me! – you're not feeling especially grateful this year? What if the mere word 'gratitude' just makes you want to vom a little in your mouth? Today, on Part 1 on this special ingratitude double feature, we're going to deep dive with an exercise on some of the darker emotions that come along with our ambivalence about a gratitude practice (especially during a time of year when it can feel more canned than that cranberry sauce you're about to serve up). But here's the catch: if you're going to follow along with the exercise today, you also need to join me back here tomorrow for Part 2 – Ep046 – of How to Be Ungrateful. When it comes to finding one's voice – and feelings of arrival – what we say to ourselves (our inner voice) is incredibly important. The word 'just' can be the most dangerous four letter word in the English language; it can act to subconsciously downplay our lifestyle – or worse – our self-esteem, especially when we use it in the context of talking about oneself and our accomplishments. Today on the show, I'm giving three examples of how we can diminish our own greatness – and our voice – with one simple four letter word. And, how to reframe the word 'just' (and your inner voice). In our collective attempt to create lasting change in an unjust world – to peacefully advocate for equality – we can easily inundate ourselves and lose sight of our own daily needs – whether we're black or white. Our advocacy and activism, if left unbounded, can lead to burnout, illness and ineffectiveness. Today on the show, I share some of my early experiences, misinterpretations, and a-ha moments in educating myself on white privilege; and show you gents how you can continue to educate, be educated, and make an impact in the fight for equality without losing sight of your own health and daily self-preservation. Feeling less than productive these days? It's a collective thing. The pandemic, and its aftermath, have slowed the productivity levels of virtually everyone. Instead of accepting giving ourselves a much needed break from our pre-pandemic life time management regimen, we instead are deluged with news articles, podcast episodes and our social media feeds telling us how we can learn a new language, drop those last 20 lbs or even start our dream business with all that spare time we suddenly have during quarantine. It’s about enough to make me want to zone out til this pandemic is over. According to my guest on this show this week, neuroscientist, Google researcher, and author, Andrew Smart, that may not be altogether a bad thing – for a few moments of every day, at least. Andrew's book, 'Auto Pilot: The Art and Science of Doing Nothing', offers a fresh perspective on the importance of everyday idleness. In our chat, Andrew challenges us to reconsider our feelings and societal judgments on idleness, especially during the pandemic – and moving forward. Find Andrew at andrewthesmart.com. 'Auto-Pilot' is available now at Or Books, and other fine booksellers. Full shownotes at atelierwrede.com/32 Would you like a home that helps you be idle (and more productive)? Have you ever wondered why you still haven’t found the right person to marry? Why your relationships end in inevitable incompatibility, and your partner’s inability to truly understand you? Do you often suffer FOMO that a better person is just round the corner, a swipe away? You may know intuitively that there is no such thing as a Perfect 10. But, your prospecting and perfectionism may be killing your love life in ways you didn’t even realize. This week on the pod, we’re examining why there is no such thing as a perfect partner – via philosopher Alain de Botton’s essay 'Why You Will Marry the Wrong Person'. I’m sharing some anecdotes from the early days of my own marriage (oh boy!) and I’m also giving you gents five realistic ways to create space for your future partner – in your head and in your home. We can’t go anywhere. Our plans have been cancelled til probably 2021 (let’s get real!). We’re no longer worried about the dinner parties we weren’t invited to, the gallery exhibitions we won’t be able to catch, the happy hours with our colleagues down the pub. Even our Instagram feeds don’t make us as wistful or envious of others’ lives as they used to. Could it be…the end of FOMO? And yet, a gripping anxiety of missing out on life persists. Instead of missing our lattés and gym memberships, we’re missing out on the things we took for granted – the things that matter most. The fear of missing out has never been stronger. So, how can we rethink our own feelings of FOMO? How can we be more decisive, and look to our own current lives for that validation, instead of with a periscopic lens which looks out in overwhelm, fear, social media comparison, indecision and analysis paralysis? This week on the pod, I’m helping you assess your own feelings of FOMO at home, work and your relationships – and use it to take action, instead of become burdened by it. Excessive attention dedicated to one thing – whether that’s our screens or our sex lives – can bring about negative home habits and dull our other senses. Some studies have found that an excessive use of porn can even reduce the amount of dopamine receptors and transporters in adolescents. Last week on the pod (Ep28), I introduced the concept of leaning in to a celibacy practice during this period of quarantine (and why a break from all sexual stimulation might be a good thing right now). This week, I’m bringing you five alternative, sensual habits to replace and re-invigorate all five senses: touch, sight, sound, smell, and taste; to awaken more mindful living, and to keep your celibacy practice on track. We’re still locked up in coronavirus quarantine. Show of hands, gents: Who’s bored? Who’s lonely? Who’s horny? Who’s frustrated that they can’t go out and get laid?! Who’s bored and lonely and horny and frustrated – and procrastinating with a whole lotta porn right now? Yep! I just went there. I’m asking the personal questions this week, guys, cause let’s face it – the most intimate parts of our lives are expressed within our homes, behind closed doors. If you’re bored and lonely, you may also be procrastinating and escaping the confines of reality with, like, a lot more porn use. In fact, PornHub reported an 11.6% spike in traffic in March (shocker, I know). So, while these “uncertain times” are throwing a monkey wrench into your erm, ‘action plans’ at the moment, now might actually be the best time to lean into celibacy, if you've ever thought about giving up the ghost for a while. I want to help keep you guys on track with your productivity, personal and relationship goals while, especially while you’re stuck at home and can’t reach out and touch someone. So, this week and next on the show, I’m diving deeper here with you guys on how to alleviate one of the toughest aspects of loneliness to grapple with: that being the loss of sexual and sensual intimacy right now. This week we’re gonna chat celibacy, because you’re already practicing it, to at least some degree, due to this outbreak. What it is, what it entails, and why you might choose to really lean into it – to welcome it – instead of perhaps begrudgingly deal with it. And, how to get real with yourself if you’re using porn as a distractionary crutch that's taking you off your A-game. I think we can all agree – there’s some crazy shit going down with our headspace right now, ammiright? We’d probably never admit it prior, but I think we’re all feeling a little bit lonely at the moment. Loneliness is a cringey concept, though, isn’t it? In any other version of reality than these twisted quarantimes – has any guy on the face of the western planet ever actually admitted (in any semblance of sobriety, at least) that he’s lonely? Acute feelings of depression and loneliness contribute to suicide – the current leading cause of death of British men, ages 20-49. In the US, suicide rates among young people have risen 35% since 2007. Putting this into current context, that’s more than cancer, road accidents, heart disease, and coronavirus – combined. So how can you alleviate feelings of loneliness, when you can’t even leave your home? Today on the show, I’m offering up five ways to reconnect, right now. We may be in physical isolation, but we needn’t succumb to emotional isolation – to loneliness. It might sound like a crazy idea to start a business right now – but as my guest on the show today will prove, there is NEVER a perfect time to jump the corporate ship for the entrepreneurial bandwagon. So, whether you’ve recently been furloughed, laid off, or you just want a change of professional pace – this is your episode, gents! I’ve brought Zac Daunt, founding Director of human-focused digital strategy consultancy, Tenasu, on the show this week to help you start thinking about your pivot. Zac left his role at the helm of marketing for one of the biggest entertainment companies in Brisbane to set up his shingle with Tenasu in 2018. In our chat, Zac offers up his strategies on how to maximize productivity when working from home; the three skills every new business owner needs; and how to bring insane value to your existing organization – even if you’ve been furloughed. While Zac is based in Brisbane, he works with clients across twenty-three industries, seven major cities in Australia, and seven countries globally – from the comfort of his own home. One of the biggest questions I get asked by clients when I work with them on The Hustler Consult is how they can store and organize their shoes. So, to help you guys craft your own shoe organization system, I’ve brought my client, super sneakerhead, Portland-based Cyrus Coleman onto the show this week. Cyrus landed his dream job designing in-house for Nike Basketball Apparel, and is tasked with creating the Nike-licensed uniforms for the NBA, NCAA, and WNBA teams. You’re going to hear, step-by-step, Cyrus’ journey to Nike – and just how he landed that dream role with a bit of help and accountability from his friends. We’re also showing you how Cyrus and I tackled his new shoe organization display – which called upon his love of retail experience design – to keep his shoes not only functional and organized but beautifully centerstage in his one-bedroom space. When shopping for furniture, have you ever stopped to think about who designed that piece you're about to put in your home? Do you ever wonder about their inspiration, their creative process, or even their personal story? My guest on the show this week, Caleb Zipperer, is the creative force behind so many of my favorite pieces offered up by CB2 (more on my love affair with the elegantly refined furniture retailer inside the episode). When I found this out, I knew I had to have him on the show. I anticipated we'd chat about Caleb's creative process, and educate listeners on the furniture design process (which, of course we did!). But I didn't expect to hear from Caleb such an impactful – and eerily timely – story of his personal struggle to achieve his professional success, in the face of adversity largely beyond his control. I'm humbled and honored to help Caleb share and celebrate his story – and I hope this episode brings enduring strength and resilience to everyone dealing with the coronavirus pandemic. Caleb Zipperer is NYC-based industrial designer who has designed and engineered furniture for Alexandra Champalimaud, CB2, West Elm, and Pottery Barn. His pieces have been exhibited at the Salon Art and Design show in NYC, and the International Contemporary Furniture Fair, amongst others. His work has been featured in Architectural Digest, Dezeen, The Robb Report, Dwell, Surface, New York Magazine, and Apartment Therapy. He founded Zipperer Studio in 2010 to prototype his designs for manufacture. Find Caleb at zippererstudio.com, on Instagram at @calebzipperer. Quarantined at home and missing your favorite cocktail bar? Confused on how to date or dress like a gentleman while social distancing? To help to keep you guys in good spirits in these ‘quarantimes’, I’ve brought Georgette Moger-Petraske on the the show. Georgette is a style, travel and spirits writer whose work has appeared in Wine Enthusiast, Departures, Imbibe and Edible magazines. Her best-selling book, the liquid memoir, 'Regarding Cocktails' (Phaidon), is a recipe guide and celebration of her late husband, visionary bartender Sasha Petraske's legacy in spirits and cocktails. In our chat, Georgette recounts her love story with Sasha, and her inspiration for finishing the book where Sasha left off. We reflect on Sasha’s rules of gentlemen’s decorum and Georgette offers up some clever tips and hacks for how to stock your home bar, how to live well, and show up for your dates – even while marooned at home. 'Regarding Cocktails' is available now from Phaidon Press or your favorite bookseller. Does your morning routine consist of hitting the snooze button 20 times til you’re finally late for work? What about overdosing on the news and social media before you’ve even left the house? How about stubbing your toe on the shower door and cursing at the guy who cut you off in traffic? Today on the podcast, we’re talking about morning routines, or rituals – and why you need to schedule some reflective time into your morning before the world places its demands on you and your brain. I share the morning routines of three thought leader, and my mentors-from-afar: Brendon Burchard, Tim Ferriss, and Mel Robbins. Then, I share with you gents my composite adopted version of their morning rituals, and tell you why – spoiler alert! – my morning routine actually starts the night before. How often have you felt utterly overwhelmed by all that you need to get done at work? Or mentally saturated by the daily influx of digital media? When you think about designing your space, two considerations likely come to mind: functionality and ROI (return on investment). We all want to spend wisely, but it’s easy to get bogged down with the pragmatics – bypassing some of the more celebratory design elements that, while seemingly frivolous, make your home an experience to arrive at everyday. On this week’s episode, I’m walking you gents through the art of the splurge: the procurement of that one piece (or pieces) that, while not necessarily functional, have a huge impact on your emotional and experiential ROI. I also give tips and resources to help you find that perfect piece to confidently invest in. Each guy I work with instinctively knows he wants his space to feel like it’s uniquely his. And yet, so many men aren’t sure of the mechanics of how to go about designing their space to make it truly their own, renting or otherwise. On this episode of ARRIVED., I break down for you gents five hacks showing you how to design a space that feels like it’s yours – not like it’s been plucked from a catalog. Citing examples from previous episodes with my guests, I'll illustrate how you can do something similar in your own space. I want to demystify this process, because it really is simple, once you know a few of these tricks! A break up, a suitcase, an empty flat – and a fresh start. For my former client, Chris Hedderick, buying his first home as a newly single guy was just the beginning. After deciding it was time for a change of pace in the renting game, Chris decided to go it alone and buy a warehouse-style loft flat in a listed ex-military store building in southeast London. He moved in with nothing but a suitcase and a mattress. Shortly after, Chris was assigned a new work location a three hour train journey from his home. To say his space was a weekend crash pad is no exaggeration. On this episode of ARRIVED., hear how Chris and I worked together to transform his space (and his habits!) from an empty flat he felt stressed coming home to, into a furnished sanctuary he now loves to cook in, read in, and host his new girlfriend in. As a guy, do you wish your friendships with other men were more emotionally fulfilling? Do you feel like you need to be stoic, posture, or adhere to outdated locker room norms of masculinity when it comes to hanging with your mates? My guests on the show today, Wes and Liam, two of the four co-hosts from the ever-insightful podcast, 'The Modern Dandy’s Guide to Manliness' (@thedandiesguide), are on a mission to help men confidently voice their feelings over a cocktail with their mates just as easily as they’d dissect the curves of a sports car over a pint. Forgoing traditional posturing (but never ditching the banter), the guys prove that the podcast waves can be a safe space to examine tough topics like toxic masculinity and alpha male culture. We also show ARRIVED. listeners how guys can craft their homes to reflect self-awareness, and encourage openness in communication between their friends (and lovers). Season 2 of 'The Modern Dandy's Guide to Manliness' is out now, wherever you get your podcasts. When it comes to modern dating, are you so used to ‘ordering’ dates online that asking someone out #IRL is now too much of a risk for the potential ROI? Are you paralyzed by the all the choice on your Hinge feed? And do you know how to design your space to attract someone into your life? On this episode of ARRIVED., I speak with Seattle-based attraction and relationship coach, Cora Boyd (@thecoraboyd), about the current dating landscape, and how being your most attractive self is a hard-won practice that runs more than skin deep. Cora helps men change behaviors that hold them back in their love lives. In our tête-a-tête, we discuss why self-awareness and doing the homework on yourself is crucial to meeting your match. We dissect the problematic ‘window shopping mentality’ which pervades the online dating world; and chat about why your home is an important tool in your dating arsenal – and it’s not why you’d think! Cora’s writing has been featured in 'The Gottman Institute', Tinder’s 'Swipe Life', and 'Thought Catalog'. You can also find her at Pillow Talks, or Tinder is the Night, just a couple of her ongoing dating events series around Seattle and LA. Have you ever stumbled upon a photo or a social media post in a bit of a vulnerable moment and it made you negatively compare your life now to 'the good old days'? Have you ever been in a surreal, transitional spot in your life and it's left you wading through a sh*tstorm of existential chaos and isolation? I have...ta-da! And for about three years – after I moved back to rural Minnesota, from a decidedly more cosmopolitan life in London – I found myself in a pain cave of 'past-self comparison'. On this episode of ARRIVED., I spill the beans on that experience and offer up four things that I did to regain momentum and kick my past-self comparison habit for good (mostly!). Whether you're currently in a challenging transitional time in your life, or simply have the occasional fumble of past-self comparison – this episode is an at times hilarious reminder you're not alone in your mental f*ckery. Have you ever walked down the street and passed a guy so refined from tip to toe, that you can tell he subscribes to his own unique philosophy and way of living? I’m talking about a dandy. On today's episode, I chat with the man who literally wrote the book on dandyism, Nathaniel Adams (@nattyadams). In this enlightening discussion, Nathaniel explains why being a dandy isn’t a hobby reserved for only the most affluent. Dandyism is an accessible mindset – and a way of life. He shows listeners how they can adopt elements of dandyism both in their personal style, and in their homes, and explains his unique process working with gentlemen on fine tailoring and custom suiting. Nathaniel (or Natty, as is also known) has worked in the world of luxury, designer, and custom suiting for a decade, and has co-authored two books on dandyism: 'I Am Dandy: The Return of the Elegant Gentleman' and 'We Are Dandy: The Elegant Gentleman Around the World' with photographer, Rose Callahan. Both were published by Gestalten (with the latter featuring a preface by Dita Von Teese). He lives between New York and New Orleans and is currently taking national and international commissions for made-to-measure suiting and finely tailored clothing. Think vision boards are BS? I did too. Then I was asked by a listener how he could incorporate a vision board in his space to help him visualize and achieve his goals in 2020. I considered this, and stumbled upon the work of Dr. Tara Swart, an esteemed neuroscientist and psychiatrist turned executive coach. Her extensive studies show a correlation between the ancient philosophical principles of the Law of Attraction and the physical neuro-processes that occur in the brain through the power of visualization, neuroplasticity and aligned action-taking. Pretty intriguing stuff, ammiright? In this episode of ARRIVED., I examine the top-line findings of Dr. Swart, and offer listeners two design solutions to incorporate vision boards – I like to call them action walls – into your space for maximum impact (both aesthetically and pragmatically), helping you turn once-daydreams into reality.
