Patriarchy is reinforced by fraternal solidarity. The Athenian demos, German guilds, Tswana kgotla, Chinese imperial dynasties, Muslim Brotherhood and Indian caste panchayats all reinforced male dominance. As long as men are united, bound in collective loyalty, women are secondary. How might this change? On International Women's Day, I'd like to highlight a hugely important (but widely overlooked) driver of gender equality. In fact, this mechanism is so powerful that it is actively suppressed by many patriarchal societies. ROMANTIC LOVE

On International Women's Day, Stephanie Zank tells Lloyd's List her story about being a trailblazer in the world of shipping As a girl growing up in Australian in the 1980s Stephanie Zank hated office jobs and loved taking things apart and putting them back together. When she first stepped on board a ship, she knew that this was the career she wanted. But her story isn't one that we're normally being told on International Women's Day. Stephanie Zank battled prejudice and abuse from her cadetship and throughout her maritime career that ended in 2014 when she was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy. Her story is one that's normally stays untold or swept under the carpet but occasionally it bubbles to the surface, like the story of Hope Hicks, better known as midshipman X, in 2022. “A lot of crew members would make comments, such as ‘you're stealing men's jobs', which was a fairly common one or ‘I hate you because you're a woman taking a man's job', but more importantly, I hate you because you're small,” she told Lloyd's List. She recounted two incidents when she was sexually harassed and sexually assaulted and the lack of support and policies in place to deal with such events. It's right that Stephanie's story is told on International Women's Day, so that despite the platitudes from many in the maritime world about the progress that's been made, we remember how far we have yet to go to ensure an equitable and fair workplace exists for all.

Young women are less sure than young men that they have the digital skills to succeed in the workplace, Accenture research has revealed

Young women in Ireland are less confident in their digital skills than young men. Just 59% of young women compared to 80% of young men believe that they have the digital skills necessary to succeed in the workplace. While young people are no strangers to the world of digital, young women are also less confident than young men that Gen AI will have a positive impact on their career prospects (48% of women, compared to 55% of men). This is according to new research from Accenture, who surveyed 18-24-year-olds ahead of International Women's Day. The findings reveal a clear gender divide when it comes to perceptions of generative AI and digital skills as young people look to enter the workforce. Despite some hesitancy around its impact, young people are still eager to embrace generative AI, with 86% of 18-24-year-olds interested in its capabilities. Nearly three out of 10 young people (29%) are using generative AI multiple times a week. In addition, three in five 18-24-year-olds (59%) are actively using the technology for writing text and 57% of young women are using generative AI to create ideas, compared to 43% of young men. 36% of those surveyed believe generative AI will free up time at work to help them to become more efficient. Furthermore, 42% of young women are confident that generative AI will help them be more creative in their jobs, compared to 34% of young men. The research also indicates that women feel less equipped than men to enter the workforce. 59% of young women, compared to 80% of young men believe that they have the digital skills necessary to succeed in the workplace. In addition, eight in 10 (80%) young women feel that their education has not adequately informed them about future career paths. While the concern that generative AI could necessitate new skills is common across genders, women express greater anxiety. Commenting on the research, Dr. Michelle Cullen, Managing Director, and Inclusion & Diversity Lead at Accenture in Ireland said: "The opportunities presented by generative AI and next generation technology are limitless at an individual, professional and societal level. I'm very excited by the prospect of using the wave of technology advances to build a better future for all and bridge the digital gender gap. "On International Women's Day, it's encouraging to see the interest and uptake of next gen technology amongst young women. But it's important to acknowledge that this isn't just about technology, it's about shaping a future where all genders stand on equal footing, harnessing the power of AI to create a more inclusive, empowered, and balanced society where no one is left behind. "We must intensify our efforts to ensure young people, especially young women, are fully aware of the diverse career opportunities awaiting them. By collaborating to address the educational gaps and the perceived lack of opportunities they face, we have a real chance to build confidence in our future workforce and increase equality of access to the paths that lead to fulfilling careers." The research also assessed attitudes towards careers in STEM and showed that three in five (60%) of young women are interested in a career in a STEM field, compared to the slightly higher 66% of young men. Of young women who are interested in careers in STEM fields, 78% are interested in a career in science and technology, compared to only 20% who are interested in mathematics and engineering. Of those interested in careers in STEM, 43% say 'educational factors' and 35% say a 'lack of opportunity' would be barriers to entering those career paths. Additional findings from the research include: Over three in five (62%) of 18-24-year-olds are confident that they can help others develop their digital skills; now, and in the future. 73% of young women believe that the IT sector will be the most heavily impacted industry by technological advancements over the next five years, compared to just over half (51%) of young men. Her courses include Marxist feminism, Women, Money and Transnationalism, decolonial feminist archives and gendered movements about the land, food and survival. Many of her courses are community-based research courses linked to regional and international community movements for the basic needs of land, food, labor, and embodied self-determination.On International Women's Day, 2023, University of California Press releases her third book called Bury the Corpse of Colonialism: The Revolutionary Feminist Conference of 1949. This book provides an intimate look at the 1949 Asian Women's Conference, the movements it drew from, and how it shaped feminist anticolonial movements around the world. In 1949, revolutionary women activists from Asia hosted a conference in Beijing that gathered together their comrades from around the world. The Asian Women's Conference developed a new political strategy, demanding that women from occupying colonial nations contest imperialism with the same dedication as women whose countries were occupied. Bury the Corpse of Colonialism shows how activists and movements create a revolutionary theory over time and through struggle—in this case, by launching a strategy for anti-imperialist, feminist internationalism. Through the lives and movements of more than a dozen AWC participants, Bury the Corpse of Colonialism traces the vital differences at the heart of internationalist solidarity for women's emancipation in a world structured through militarism, capitalism, patriarchy, and the seeming impossibility of justice. On International Women's Day we talk to the foreign secretary, James Cleverly MP, as he travels to Sierra Leone to launch the UK's new international women and girls strategy. Dr Sabrina Cohen-Hatton is one the most senior fire fighters in the UK. The current Chief Fire Officer of West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service has in her 22 year career covered major incidents such as the London Bridge terror attack, the Finsbury Park terror attack and the aftermath of Grenfell. Last month on Woman's Hour we discussed the fire service after recent reports hit the headlines of allegations of bullying and sexual harassment of female fire fighters at different services. Last year, an independent review found the London Fire Brigade to be institutionally racist and misogynistic. Just seven percent of fire fighters are women and there are even less in high leadership roles. Sabrina joins Nuala to talk about her new book The Gender Bias The Barriers That Hold Women Back, And How to Break Them, which unpicks why women are judged differently, and how we can tackle those biases, and also tells us whether she thinks the fire service has a problem with women. Sunday marked the end of the European Indoor Championships in Istanbul, a golden weekend for Team GB women. Keely Hodgkinson retained her 800m title before team captain Jazmin Sawyers won a long jump Gold, earning her a first major title of her senior career with a world-leading jump of seven metres. Jazmin now holds the British Indoor record and joins Nuala. What is it like to be a poet, a woman and a performer of poetry at this particular moment in time? Kim Moore aims to answer this question in her new book Are You Judging Me Yet? Poetry and Everyday Sexism. The book contains poems from her collection All the Men I Never Married, for which she won the Forward prize last year. She explains to Nuala McGovern why poetry is the perfect medium for exploring sexism.
