344. Why You Struggle to Receive Money (Even When You're Good at Making It)

The Game On Girlfriend Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 4, 2026 17:53 Transcription Available

Most of us don't actually have trouble making money. It's the keeping of it — the receiving of it — that's the problem. If you added up how much money has passed through your hands over your lifetime, the number would probably surprise you. It comes in, you manage it, you pay bills, and then it's "gone," so you never really see how much you're circulating. That's not a money-making problem. That's a receiving problem, and most women were never taught the skill. In this solo episode, I break down what receiving actually is, why we were never taught to do it, and how you can start practicing it today.   WHAT YOU'LL LEARN The friendship bracelet story that reveals exactly when we're taught to stop receiving Why women in particular tend to under-apply for things they're qualified for — and where that pattern comes from Why your natural gifts were meant to become your living, not something you give away for free What a $40,000 handbag taught me about the difference between having money and actually receiving it Where you're already wealthy right now, even before more money shows up Small daily practices that start building your capacity to receive   RESOURCES MENTIONED Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg    READY TO BUILD YOUR BUSINESS? WCI #482: What Doctors Need to Know About Home and Auto Insurance

White Coat Investor Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 30, 2026 56:49

How do you know if your home and auto insurance actually covers what you think it does, and whether you're paying too much for it? In this episode, Dr. Jim Dahle talks with Jeff Wingate, president of Rate Insurance, about the fast-changing world of property and casualty coverage. They open by tackling a listener's question about dropping collision and comprehensive auto coverage, then dig into why home insurance costs climbed close to 100% over the past three years while auto rates have actually started falling. Jeff explains what recent wildfires in Los Angeles and shifting storm patterns mean for coverage availability, why renovating or upgrading your home can bump you into an entirely different insurance category, and why earthquake and flood coverage are excluded from standard homeowners policies in the first place. They also work through the often-confusing question of how to choose a deductible, how to document your belongings without appraising every item you own, and when renters insurance makes sense. The conversation wraps with a detailed look at auto insurance structure, comprehensive, collision, and liability, and a breakdown of umbrella coverage: what it costs, how much you actually need, and why roughly 80% of umbrella claims trace back to auto accidents rather than someone getting hurt on your property. Insurance is one of those expenses that's easy to set once and never revisit. A periodic review can uncover both real gaps in your coverage and real savings sitting on the table. Today's episode is brought to us by SoFi, the folks who help you get your money right. Paying off student debt quickly and getting your finances back on track isn't easy, but that's where SoFi can help — they have exclusive, low rates designed to help medical residents refinance student loans—and that could end up saving you thousands of dollars, helping you get out of student debt sooner. For years, Abi Horton believed real estate investing wasn't for her. Not enough money, not enough experience, not the right background. So she stayed on the sidelines and told herself it was something for later. Then things shifted, not through one big moment, but through a lot of small, unplanned ones. Voice acting taught her she was capable of running a business. That confidence opened a door she hadn't been looking for, and stepping through it eventually led to Aros, a real estate investment technology company built around mid-term rentals. Abi is candid about what that process actually looked like- no highlight reel, no shortcut. If you've ever told yourself you need more money, more time, or more expertise before you can start, this conversation is for you.   WHAT YOU'LL LEARN The mindset block that kept Abi out of real estate investing for years, and what it actually took to move past it How she used free resources like Facebook groups and networking events to educate herself, without an insider connection Why she calls building a business "one foot in front of the other," and why that mindset matters more than a single lightbulb moment What mid-term rentals actually are, and who needs this kind of housing (traveling nurses, insurance displacement, workers relocating for big projects) How a gap in the relocation housing market led her to build Aros Her advice for someone starting from zero who feels like they need everything figured out before they begin   ABI'S FREE GIFT FOR GAME ON GIRLFRIEND® LISTENERS Top Tips for Managing Your Mid-Term Rental Out of State. Originally from the UK, Abi started her career in real estate at 18 before later becoming a full-time voice actor and entrepreneur. After building relationships with insurance relocation companies for her own rentals, she recognized how fragmented the temporary housing process was and founded Aros to create a more direct, relationship-driven solution for mid-term housing. She helps landlords build sustainable businesses beyond traditional listing platforms and speaks openly about entrepreneurship, mental resilience, and the realities of building a business from the ground up.   READY TO BUILD YOUR CONFIDENCE? There's a reason we talk about mindset on this podcast just as much as strategy, because what's happening on the inside shows up directly in your business results. How do you finish medical training with $300,000 in student loans and still reach a net worth of zero before your first attending paycheck? In this episode of Milestones to Millionaire, an orthopedic surgery fellow shares how he and his family accumulated nearly $300,000 in investments while carrying roughly the same amount in federal student loans. Despite raising three children on a resident salary with a stay-at-home spouse, they consistently invested in retirement accounts, kept expenses low, benefited from a favorable housing market, and let long-term investing do much of the heavy lifting. We discuss why they chose a simple total stock market investing strategy, how market growth accelerated their progress, and why having a written financial plan before becoming an attending is one of the biggest advantages a new physician can have. Alek also shares his plan to refinance and eliminate his student loans in less than two years, the philosophy behind his family's "Buy When Rich" list, and the simple 10% rule they use to balance enjoying life while building wealth. The conversation closes with practical advice for residents and medical students on preparing financially before the larger paychecks arrive, including why fourth year of medical school may be the best time to begin learning personal finance. Financial success rarely begins with an attending salary. It begins with habits, planning, and making intentional decisions long before the income changes. For years, "Django and async" came with an asterisk. The docs themselves warned you off it. Scary performance notes, a story that felt half-finished. Well, that story just got rewritten, literally, and the person who rewrote it is here to tell you why the old framing was wrong. Carlton Gibson is a former Django Fellow, sat on the security team for eight years, and he's on the steering council. On this episode we get into the async topic doc rewrite, what actually remains versus what was just fear, the new Tasks framework in 6.0, DB-level cascades and fetch modes landing in 6.1, and why free-threading is the bet that's about to pay off big for Django. If you've been told Django's async story isn't ready, this is the episode that puts that myth to bed. I think trying to find off-market listings is hard as well today. As a storage owner, I get, on average, 10 texts a week, lots of letters a month, and perhaps one to two calls every week or so about selling my facility. Some inquiries even come for properties I sold years ago (not sure what lists out there show us as owners). The reality is, for the most part, the way most of us try to connect with and buy off-market properties doesn't work very well. Perhaps there is a better way to stand out from the herd. How could a busy physician take their family abroad for months at a time without sacrificing their career, their children's education, or their financial future? In this episode, Dr. Jim Dahle talks with anesthesiologist and palliative care physician Dr. Sarah Gebauer, author of Go Anyway: The Practical Guide to Long-Term Travel With Kids. Sarah has traveled to more than 50 countries with her husband and four children while taking 3-5 month sabbaticals from her private practice. She explains how she created a workable sabbatical policy, used trusted locums coverage, and found that taking extended time away did not reduce her income as much as she expected. They discuss the real cost of long-term international travel, how living abroad can sometimes cost less than staying home, and the tradeoffs between slow travel, remote work, and constant movement. They also tackle the questions many physician parents have: Can children stay on track academically? What happens to friendships and activities? Can physicians in primary care, surgery, or dual-doctor households make this work? And can a sabbatical actually help with burnout and career direction? Financial literacy is not just about maximizing accounts. It can give you the flexibility to design a life with more time, curiosity, and connection with the people who matter most. Most of us have been told, at some point or another, to just be happy. Just let it go. Just choose joy. And if you've tried that and found it completely unhelpful, you are in very good company. Dr. Peggy DeLong is back on the podcast for her third visit, and what she shares in this episode about how to increase your capacity for happiness is not what most people are teaching. It's not about ignoring what's hard. It's not about thinking positively until the feeling kicks in. And it has nothing to do with luck or your current circumstances. Peggy discovered the power of gratitude while sitting by her fiancé's side as he was dying from an aggressive cancer. She was 26. She didn't push the grief away. She felt it — and that turned out to be the beginning of everything she now teaches. If you've ever been told to just cheer up and wanted to throw something, this one is for you.   WHAT YOU'LL LEARN Why pushing emotional pain aside actually makes it harder to access real happiness — and what to do instead How your capacity for joy is in direct proportion to your capacity to feel pain What collective effervescence is and why it matters more than we think How human connection with complete strangers predicts happiness just as much as our closest relationships What the three Ps — present, pleasure, and purpose — have to do with breaking the high-achieving cycle Peggy's four Ps for building positive mental health: prioritize, plan, practice, prosper   DR. Send us Fan MailI sat down with Dan Lee, a self-taught wooden boat builder based in the Cotswolds, who turned a lifelong obsession into a full-time business, funded almost entirely by online courses he runs from a farm workshop. It's a genuinely great story.Dan started building model boats at eight and full-size ones at seventeen. When COVID hit and his previous business, making tree-shaped bookcases, looked like it was going to collapse overnight, he decided to go all in on something he'd always wanted to do. He built a website, started modernising old wooden boat plans using CAD and CNC technology, created his first online course on varnishing, and never really looked back. What I found fascinating talking to Dan is how clearly he's thought about why online teaching actually works better than in-person for hands-on crafts. The camera angles, the controlled lighting, the ability to overlay animations showing wet edges drying in real time. It's not a compromise on the in-person experience, it's genuinely better for teaching the foundations. We also got pretty honest about where Dan's business has room to grow. He's doing well with Facebook ads and his courses are covering his workshop overheads, but his email list is sitting mostly untouched. We talked through what that could mean if he actually started using it properly, and the numbers are exciting. If you're building a course business around a physical craft or a niche skill, I think you'll get a lot from this one.Check out Dan's work:

Coding agents have gotten really good at one kind of work. You scope a feature, edit some files, run the tests, ship it. It all happens on disk. But that is not how data work feels. You load something, you look at it, you run a cell, you watch how it responds, and you decide the next move from whatever is sitting in memory. And until now, your agent couldn't see any of that. It only saw the files. Never the live state. This episode, that wall comes down. marimo pair drops a coding agent right inside a running notebook, with full access to every variable Python is holding in memory. The notebook becomes a shared canvas. You point, it runs the code. You tell it to zoom in on the Picasso paintings, and the chart just updates. No MCP tools to wire up, no schema to describe. Just Python, and an agent that can finally see what you see. Trevor Manz is back to walk us through it. You ask an AI a question and it answers with total confidence. Most of the time, a confidently wrong answer is just an annoyance. But what if the question is medical, and there's a real patient on the other end? In that world, a hallucination isn't a bug, it's a patient-safety event. Sumit Gundawar is a London-based software engineer who builds the clinical platform for a UK longevity and aesthetic-medicine clinic, and his whole argument is that in high-stakes AI, the model is the easy part.
