The next government is being accused of continuing to compound the hurt and distress of survivors by excluding any provision for the reversal of the six-month rule in the draft Programme for Government. Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael have reached an agreement with the Regional Independent Group, paving the way for the formation of the next government. Fianna Fáil members voted overwhelmingly in favour of the draft programme for government on Sunday, while Fine Gael votes are to be counted on Monday Their respective ratification processes are now completed in time for the Dáil meeting scheduled for tomorrow (Wednesday). However, Sinn Féin Ireland South MEP Kathleen Funchion has expressed her alarm at the number of Independent TDs who have entered into government, despite, in her words, “vehemently condemning” the government's Mother and Baby Homes Institutions Payment Scheme during the last Dáil. To discuss this further, Alan Morrissey was joined by West Clare survivor of a Mother and Baby Home, Anthony Morrissey. Photo (C): Canva kieferpix from Getty Images

A Clare Mother and Baby Home survivor is accusing the State of "dangling a carrot" in front of him and his fellow survivors when it comes to redress. Former Trade Unionist Sheila Nunan was appointed by the Minister for Equality as "expert negotiator" tasked with securing money from church orders for Mother and Baby Home redress in May of last year. She was given a deadline of undisclosed deadline of six months but it's not been confirmed talks have not reached a point of a final offer of money being made from congregations involved in the running of the homes. Cree native Anthony Morrissey who was adopted at birth claims the Government is trying to "get away with as much as the can" and believes redress should be extended to the families of those who have passed away since leaving the homes.
The government negotiator has failed to reach an agreement with holy orders in relation to The mother and Baby redress scheme in the given timeline allotted by government . Patsy McGarry of the Irish Times & Maeve O'Rourke, Lecturer in Human Rights at the Irish Centre for Human Rights at NUI Galway discuss.

Send us a Text Message. In this episode, Laura Murphy shares wisdom about her sacred activism journey and the ways in which she harnesses the ancient Irish practice of imbas forosnai (divine inspiration) in her work to create social change. The Irish spirit is a revolutionary one, and Laura speaks about the intersection of spirituality and activism in Irish history, highlighting the lives of key figures from the Celtic Revival at the end of the 1800s and early 1900s.Laura's writing and poetry is at the forefront of her work, and she has become a powerful voice for Ireland's Mother and Baby Home and Magdalene Laundry survivors after writing a letter to the Taoiseach (Ireland's head of Parliament) which received national and international attention. She's also a strong advocate for Palestine, and we speak about the importance of speaking up in these times. This episode is both highly informative and deeply personal as Laura shares her initiatory experience of leaving the corporate world during a health crisis. This dark night of the soul changed her life in profound ways, setting her firmly on the path of imbas forosnai, sacred activism, and destiny.

From the 1920's until the 1990's, unwed mothers in Ireland were forced into institutions such as Magdalene Laundries and Mother and Baby homes in order to conceal their sin of premarital sex and conceiving out of wedlock from the public eye. Within these institutions, run by religious organizations like the Bon Secours Nuns and Presbyterians/ Plymouth Brethren, these women and their children were subject to horrific abuse. The infant mortality rates of these institutions were nearly double the national rates. Reports show that 1 in 7 children born into these homes died from preventable illnesses, neglect, or malnutrition. Many children were stolen from their mothers and either boarded out as free laborers to local families or trafficked to wealthy families in Europe and the US through illegal adoptions. In 2014, a news story broke claiming there may be as many as 800 children believed to have been buried in a mass grave where the Bon Secour Mother and Baby Home in Tuam once stood. This set off an outcry from the public to launch an investigation into these homes and into the dark secrets they hid from the public. This investigation led to uncovering the truth of how the religious orders behind these institutions profited off taking advantage of these “fallen women” while leaving many of them homeless and destitute and forcing mothers to give up their children for adoption against their will. This is a story of the overreach of religious power and how dangerous it can be to pursue a facade of holy uprightness and purity within a broken society, leaving innocent children as victims and collateral damage. Clare is said to be leading by example when it comes to facing up to the horrors of the Mother and Baby Homes scandal. It comes as the long-awaited redress scheme for survivors of the institutions, which is believed to be costing the state around €800 million, is set to open on March 20th. It's believed that up to 168 babies lost their lives at Clare's only registered Mother and Baby Home in Kilrush between 1923 and 1932. Public Relations Officer of the Tuam Mother and Baby Home Alliance Breeda Smyth says this county has been exemplar in dealing with a tragic period of recent history.
The payment scheme for survivors of the Mother and Baby homes will open on the 20th of March and the first payments are expected to be made by the end of June this year. Samantha Long and her twin sister were born in 1972 in St Patrick's Mother and Baby Home in Dublin. Samantha joins Sarah.

The actor/director/teacher/writer has written a memoir ‘The Price of Silence' (published by Menma Books) about her life, which included getting pregnant by a married man, going to a Mother & Baby Home secretly and having to give up her only child for adoption, a daughter who contacted her 26 years later.
The Mother & Baby Homes - often called the "Magdalene Laundries", where young women were sent to give birth before having their children taken away from them - are a stain on Irish history, with many of the children born there having suffered neglect, abuse and trauma. Those children went on to become adults, and many of them left our island to find a better future abroad. The wrong done to those children and their parents has since been recognised by the state, and attempts are afoot to try to compensate them in some way, but because of how the system is set up, many will get nothing. Patrick Rodgers and Fréa do their best to help Irish people in Britain to deal with their trauma and to avail of the services and compensation that they might be due, and he joined me on this week's podcast to talk about his vital work.

He is here! Woohoo! Wow. Is there anything better? What a miracle. What a pure blessing. Lionel Peter Voetberg was born on Sunday, July 23rd at 5:36 AM. 8lbs 11oz. God is so generous. Is there a more glorious thing than being a vessel that carries, incubates, delivers, then sustains a person that bears the image of our great Creator and King? I cannot do that. Katie just did that. Mothers do that. That is incredible! Thankfully our kiddos were sound asleep for the duration of the labor and delivery. Then, as they awoke, one by one, we got to witness unbridled excitement expressed in ways unique to each of their personalities. This has been the most celebratory child because of how much more our kids understand it and how they have been looking forward to it. They were so pumped to welcome this little guy into the family. It has made it really special and fun. We are a home of celebrants. New life is my favorite thing to celebrate. Have you ever found yourself repeating an affirmation or a mantra like, "I am radiant, I am beautiful, I am going to be a Mom" but rather than feeling these beautiful words lift you up, they instill a sense of dread instead? Have you ever wondered WHY that would be the case? In the world of affirmations and making your dreams come true, we often confuse words with feelings. Words will get you nowhere, feelings, on the other hand, are your ticket to parenthood. In order to manifest whatever you are seeking, it is essential to connect with the feeling that goes along with it. The universe responds to how you feel, not to what you say. So, it doesn't matter what you say if you can't conjure a sense of belief within yourself, even just a tiny seed, then it won't have much effect. But, how do you connect with feelings of motherhood or fatherhood when all you've met on this journey has been sadness, disappointment, and possibly grief? Tune in to today's episode to find out. And then follow me on Instagram @BadassFertility
