Good news isn't always light. It is brave, uncomfortable and deeply human. It lives in places where people are doing everything they can to give children a second chance at a childhood. On this week's Good Things with Brent Lindeque, we sit down with Pastors Steven and Sharon Lamprecht, the founders of Hopelands. What they have built is rooted in compassion, consistency and an unshakeable belief that every child deserves safety, dignity and love. Steven and Sharon bring a lifetime of experience into this work. After spending many years in the corporate sector, they transitioned into full-time ministry and have now served for more than 40 years. That journey eventually led them to Hopelands... a place that exists for babies and toddlers who have already experienced far too much, far too soon. Hopelands is based in Magaliesburg and is home to abandoned and vulnerable babies and toddlers. The home is approved by the Department of Health and the Department of Social Development and can accommodate up to 13 children between the ages of 0 and 3, from all races. At the moment, nine little ones fill the space with life, routine and care. Each child arrived with a story. One baby came to Hopelands when he was just three days old. The team did not know if he would survive. He was born with Crystal Meth in his system. Another baby, only a few weeks old, was found alone in a shack with nothing but water. No one knows how long she had been there. Another arrived with broken bones, barely two months old. And one little child, just four months old, arrived with cigarette burns covering his tiny body. When I went to give him a hug, I could feel the bumps all over him. His plushy little pyjamas, bright in colour, didn't hide the horror of what he had been through. And yet, Hopelands is not defined by trauma. It is defined by what happens next. “Our heart is to ensure we raise these babies and toddlers to be champions, so they can dream again,” the Lamprechts say. That belief shapes every decision they make. It shows up in the structure, the care, the patience and the way each child is seen not for where they came from, but for who they can become. Today I chat with Sophie, a clinical psychologist and mother of two who runs her own practice, Nimble Minds Clinical Psychology, in Sydney's Sutherland Shire. Sophie shares her journey from a 10-month conception period during COVID lockdowns to two incredibly positive birth experiences at the Royal Hospital for Women. Her first birth with daughter Charlotte (Lottie) was a beautifully managed hospital birth, whilst her second pregnancy brought the surprise of a 4.6kg baby boy, Henry, and initial plans for a home birth that ultimately led to another wonderful hospital experience. Sophie's story is particularly valuable for expectant mothers as she navigates the mental preparation for birth through her professional lens whilst experiencing the raw emotions of becoming a mother herself.Connect with us:Instagram @australianbirthstoriesTikTok @australianbirthstoriesWebsite australianbirthstories.com Hosted on Acast. This week, I sit down with PJ Haverty, who shares his powerful story of being born in the Mother and Baby Home in Tuam in the 1950s. PJ's mother was sent there after becoming pregnant out of wedlock, and despite coming back every week for over five years, the nuns refused to return her little boy to her.Fostered out, PJ grew up carrying the loss of his mother, a wound that shaped his life. In time he began to search for his birth mother but alongside the love he had for her came anger and grief for what had been stolen from them both. This conversation shines a light on the deep impact of the Mother and Baby Homes, and on PJ's journey of loss, love, and survival.*Very brief mention of abuse For more information on Grief Retreats visit www.griefireland.com
A dark chapter in Clare's past is the focus of a new book by social historian Rita McCarthy. ‘Forgotten Lives – The Story of the County Clare Mother and Baby Home, 1922–1932' tells the story of the institution known as the County Nursery, which operated for ten years in part of the old Kilrush Workhouse. Run first by the Sisters of Mercy and later by lay staff, the home was described by one Clare County Councillor at the time as “a disgrace to the twentieth century”. Babies died at what the medical officer called “an appalling rate”, while women and children endured harsh and inhumane conditions. Drawing on archives, oral histories and survivor testimony, McCarthy brings to light the lived experiences of those who passed through its doors. The book will be launched at the De Valera Library in Ennis on 21 August, by Professor Bernadette Whelan of UL. To tell us more, Alan Morrissey was joined by the author herself, Rita McCarthy.

On todays episode with Niall, we're diving into one of Ireland's most contentious and emotionally charged questions: Has the Catholic Church, despite its well-documented failures, actually done more good than bad?Niall is joined in studio by journalist Jason Osborne to unpack a provocative column written by Laura Perrins, published in Gript. In her piece, Perrins argues that it has become too easy — and often historically inaccurate — to lay every societal ill at the feet of the Catholic Church. She points to the ongoing Tuam Mother and Baby Home story and claims the media often misrepresents or oversimplifies the Church's role, while ignoring the responsibilities of state bodies like Galway County Council.Quoting Perrins:"The thing about defaming Catholic nuns is that they are a soft target as they are too dead to defend themselves."She adds that the narrative of “evil nuns and priests” is convenient, but not always rooted in fact. With this backdrop, Niall opens the phone lines to you — the listeners — to weigh in:

Morley's Mouthfuls Festival season is well and truly underway right across Galway. The Galway Film Fleadh (which we broadcasted from on Friday) is continuing to amaze audiences with a variety of genres, styles and actors in venues right across the city. However, far from there being a lull in newsy stories we covered a number of local, national and international stories on Galway Talks this week. Two stories very much linked to historical abuse were front and centre over the past few days, namely the exaction of the former Tuam Mother and Baby Home site and the announcement of a Commission of Investigation into historical abuse at religious run schools. The intervention team at Tuam invited media from the world over to North Galway to get a sense of the delicate work beginning there next week. The jury is still out on whether or not the Commission of Investigation into abuse at religious run schools will learn lessons from previous reports from other scandals. The farming sector has greeted news that the EU Commission will be requesting updates from Ireland on the Nitrates Derogation with a great deal of apprehension. For those not from a farming backgrounds, this exemption (only benefitting Ireland) may see reductions in livestock numbers if it is reduced. Glinsk native and Independent Ireland TD Michael Fitzmaurice gave the historic context of this latest development in Europe. The war in Gaza continues to be a firm point of discussion right across the world, but closer to home here in Galway many groups have been vocal in the support and have raised funds alongside their voices. Bríd Hennelly, Sabrina and Kay Egan and Evelyn Kelly joined us in studio to tell us about why they have decided to walk the Tóchar Phádraig to raise funds for Gaza Go Bragh. Bríd became inspired to do something tangible after working with Palestinian families through Direct Provision. The film fleadh will just be over and we will be jumping straight into the Galway International Arts Festival. We have been looking ahead to some of the stunning acts which will be rolling into town over the coming fortnight. One such act is comedian Al Murray, who brings his Pub Landlord persona to Leisureland later this month. We will be giving more insights into all the shows taking front and centre over the next two weeks on Galway Talks, starting with our first of two broadcasts from the Festival Garden this coming Monday morning. (Our Galway Great will be none other than the Artistic Director of the festival Paul Fahy.) We always love a bit of music on the programme and this week was no exception. Craughwell native Inis Meáin resident Una Ní Fhlánnagáin joined us as she launched a brand new type of harp alongside a new album. Support for Galway talent was on the double this week as Groev came in to play their new single ahead of performances in the Arts Festival Garden. Don't forget that next week we will also be out and about on Friday the 18th for our Community Matters Series in Glinsk, where we will be broadcasting from the National School in the village.

This month, actor and mother and baby home survivor Noelle Brown and singer Camille O'Sullivan will take to the stage together for a new theatre performance called In Plain Sight. In today's episode, the pair join Róisín Ingle to discuss the show and how it explores the design and history of three homes that are still standing, Sean Ross Abbey, Castlepollard and Bessborough Mother and Baby Home (where Brown was born). It's hoped many Clare families will finally be on the road to getting closure as preparatory works for exhumations at the the site of the Bon Secours Mother and Baby Home in Tuam begin today. 796 babies and children died at the home between 1925 and 1961, the equivalent of one child every fortnight. It's expected the excavations will take up to two years or longer to complete. PRO of the Tuam Mother and Baby Home Alliance Breeda Murphy says he suffering of mothers and babies in Clare cannot be forgotten.
Work to allow for the excavation of a burial ground at the former mother-and-baby home in Tuam is set to begin today. Such work is long awaited since the 2017 Commission of Investigation into Mother and Baby Homes determined that “significant quantities of human remains” were buried on the site. Catherine Corless, Campaigner and Local Historian spoke to Shane this morning.

The next government is being accused of continuing to compound the hurt and distress of survivors by excluding any provision for the reversal of the six-month rule in the draft Programme for Government. Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael have reached an agreement with the Regional Independent Group, paving the way for the formation of the next government. Fianna Fáil members voted overwhelmingly in favour of the draft programme for government on Sunday, while Fine Gael votes are to be counted on Monday Their respective ratification processes are now completed in time for the Dáil meeting scheduled for tomorrow (Wednesday). However, Sinn Féin Ireland South MEP Kathleen Funchion has expressed her alarm at the number of Independent TDs who have entered into government, despite, in her words, “vehemently condemning” the government's Mother and Baby Homes Institutions Payment Scheme during the last Dáil. A Clare Mother and Baby Home survivor is accusing the State of "dangling a carrot" in front of him and his fellow survivors when it comes to redress. Former Trade Unionist Sheila Nunan was appointed by the Minister for Equality as "expert negotiator" tasked with securing money from church orders for Mother and Baby Home redress in May of last year. She was given a deadline of undisclosed deadline of six months but it's not been confirmed talks have not reached a point of a final offer of money being made from congregations involved in the running of the homes. Cree native Anthony Morrissey who was adopted at birth claims the Government is trying to "get away with as much as the can" and believes redress should be extended to the families of those who have passed away since leaving the homes.

A discussion on the Mother & Baby Home payments scheme, psychotherapist Colman Noctor on parental stress, and New Yorker Richard gives his take on the state of Cork. Cork, it's time to talk, weekdays from 9am. The Neil Prendeville Show on RedFM.
From the 1920's until the 1990's, unwed mothers in Ireland were forced into institutions such as Magdalene Laundries and Mother and Baby homes in order to conceal their sin of premarital sex and conceiving out of wedlock from the public eye. Within these institutions, run by religious organizations like the Bon Secours Nuns and Presbyterians/ Plymouth Brethren, these women and their children were subject to horrific abuse. The infant mortality rates of these institutions were nearly double the national rates. Reports show that 1 in 7 children born into these homes died from preventable illnesses, neglect, or malnutrition. Many children were stolen from their mothers and either boarded out as free laborers to local families or trafficked to wealthy families in Europe and the US through illegal adoptions. In 2014, a news story broke claiming there may be as many as 800 children believed to have been buried in a mass grave where the Bon Secour Mother and Baby Home in Tuam once stood. This set off an outcry from the public to launch an investigation into these homes and into the dark secrets they hid from the public. This investigation led to uncovering the truth of how the religious orders behind these institutions profited off taking advantage of these “fallen women” while leaving many of them homeless and destitute and forcing mothers to give up their children for adoption against their will. This is a story of the overreach of religious power and how dangerous it can be to pursue a facade of holy uprightness and purity within a broken society, leaving innocent children as victims and collateral damage. He is here! Woohoo! Wow. Is there anything better? What a miracle. What a pure blessing. Lionel Peter Voetberg was born on Sunday, July 23rd at 5:36 AM. 8lbs 11oz. God is so generous. Is there a more glorious thing than being a vessel that carries, incubates, delivers, then sustains a person that bears the image of our great Creator and King? I cannot do that. Katie just did that. Mothers do that. That is incredible! Thankfully our kiddos were sound asleep for the duration of the labor and delivery. Then, as they awoke, one by one, we got to witness unbridled excitement expressed in ways unique to each of their personalities. This has been the most celebratory child because of how much more our kids understand it and how they have been looking forward to it. They were so pumped to welcome this little guy into the family. It has made it really special and fun. We are a home of celebrants. New life is my favorite thing to celebrate. We are rejoicing in God's grace and faithfulness to our family.-Top 5 Tuesday Join our weekly email list to keep up to date with the highlights of what is going on in our family life. https://www.nowthatwereafamily.com/top-5-tuesday-newletter - Looking for more Now That We're A Family resources?
