Episode 51 - A Lot of Little ThingsKyle and Gilbert talk about, uh, a lot of little things.Show NotesGilbert's 4TB SSDs. Note: Gilbert is noticing some cache-based throttling during very large file transfers, dropping speeds in RAID0 from 1.3GB/s to 600MB/s. This is disappointing (even 1.3GB/s is disappointing in a way -- it should be closer to 2GB/s), but won't always be a factor. Plus, the RAID0 speed still exceeds that of typical external SSDs. The reason is, generally speaking, the softness of light is a function of the relative size and distance of the light source. For very soft light on a human subject, a four-foot soft box placed very close will usually do the trick (as will bouncing, using other kinds of modifiers, etc.). Whereas if your subject is quite small, you can (usually) proportionately scale down the light to achieve a similar effect. Lots of fun math (and subjective yet clever feel, such as with the kind of show Mark might love). Conversely, the sun is pretty (shut) damn big but also pretty damn far away. Often, the light will be quite hard (up), barring said modifiers such as the linens that have been in your family since before the war, or, Gilbert's preference, pollution.
