Christopher Cassidy, the President and CEO of the National Medal of Honor Museum Foundation (“NMOHMF”), is this episode's guest. Chris attended the U.S. Naval Academy and became a Navy SEAL, before becoming a commander of SEAL units in Afghanistan. After Chris left the SEALs, he joined NASA as an astronaut, flew on the Space Shuttle Endeavor and Russian Soyuz spacecraft, commanded the International Space Station, and eventually rose to NASA's Chief Astronaut.  In total, Chris has spent the fifth most time of any human being in space.  After leaving the military, Chris was tapped to lead the NMOHMF.  During the podcast, Chris and Brooke discuss how the museum (which recently broke ground in Arlington, Texas) came to be, how it will honor the 3,511 Medal of Honor recipients, and how a monument to be built in Washington, D.C. by the NMOHMF, as well as the Foundation's Leadership Institute, will share the stories of these incredible heroes with current and future generations.  (0:26). Space shuttle Endeavour ended its flight career Sept. 21 as it toured California on the back of NASA's modified 747 carrier aircraft, landing at Los Angeles International Airport after its final ferry flight into history. The four-hour, 34-minute flight began at NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base Friday morning, and over the ensuing hours the piggyback pair made low-level flybys over scores of California cities and landmarks, many of which had direct ties to NASA's Space Shuttle Program over the past 40 years.Ironically, the flyover was scheduled to fly right over our studios at KHITS 92.1, so my news and traffic reporter, Christine Reckford and I decided to broadcast from the stations rooftop and watch the flight while on the air.   After waiting all morning with a no show shuttle, we decided to call Nasa and find out what was causing the delay.    To our delight, we got to speak to Michael Curie,  Nasa's premiere spokesperson who was actually on board the 747.  This is that interview.Photo:  Courtesy of Google Arts & Culture

The universe and our purpose in it remain vastly unknown. Many theories, beliefs, and reckonings exist about the “big scheme of things” but ultimately there are few concrete answers to our existential questions. To explore the impact space has on the physical, psychological, and spiritual aspects of humans, Positive Psychology Podcast Host Lisa Cypers Kamen speaks with two experts in outer space, professor of astroparticle physics and preacher, Heino Falcke and astronaut, Colonel Terry Virts. Heino Falcke created the first global telescope network to successfully photograph a black hole. I started my show the day after Gabrielle Giffords was nearly assassinated in Tucson (01/08/11). The entire community was in a state of shock and for this host I was just Trying to get my sea legs on the radio. While the community was mourning my guest was going through a transformation of his own. From Space Navigator to family pillar, from Desert Storm Patriot to healer, from an abstract belief in god to a deepening in his faith. My guest sat by his wife beds side while she healed. Because of modern medicine and competent surgeons she survived, although some close to her did not. She rehabilitated in the finest clinics in America slowly relearning to speak and eat and all other daily living skills we take for granted. Maybe my guest did to but after that tragic day he was by her side every step of the way. Pulling from the Cosmos a deep well of intestinal fortitude that he poured into Gabby. As she mended the couple realized they had reached yet another demarcation point in their lives. No longer was she just a politician and he a gutty astronaut. They were now public figures that gained international attention for overcoming the odds. Whether or not they wanted this, natural events gave them no choice. Maybe it was not having a choice that changed my guest. As we sit here today my guests identical twin brother just broke the record for most consecutive days in space by an American Astronaut. My guest has taken his fair share of trips into space using what we know of modern engineering. His aerospace acumen is such that he became a NASA space shuttle pilot in 1996 and made four trips into space including the Space Shuttle Endeavor in 2011. He is also a navy captain and naval aviator flying missions in the first Gulf War. While he has consistently sacrificed for his country he is now an American searching for responsible solutions in one of the most irresponsible times in our countries governmental history. Mass shootings have occurred in South Carolina, Connecticut Colorado and Oregon since January 2011 and despite heavy support from President Barack Obama no legislation has been passed to limit the ability of unhinged or mentally unstable individuals to get their hands on assault weapons. Nothing has been done to change the background checks before you can purchase guns. We have a society that glorifies violence and many big companies who would just assume to see the status quo stay the same. That's where my guest comes in rallying victims family members and trying to change hearts and minds so that are kids can be safer, our discourse can be civil and more pragmatic approach to governing can evolve. Just a simple twist of fate Mark Kelly welcome to the JFS --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jake-feinberg/support

In this episode: We meet Paul Lockhart, U.S. Air Force Colonel (retired) and former NASA astronaut. Spanning his career, Lockhart has served numerous duty assignments worldwide, has logged 5,000-plus flying hours piloting more than 30 aircraft, and has also piloted two space shuttle missions to the International Space Station — STS-111 and STS-113 — both in 2002, aboard Space Shuttle Endeavor. More recently, Paul has written a book called Virtus Adventures and runs a website and blog to promote it. He also does public speaking engagements with school children to inspire an early interest in STEM subjects and space exploration.  In this conversation, Paul discusses how he first became interested in space as a child during the dawn of the space age, the skills he had — and the skills he wished he had — when he first became an astronaut, how mentors helped him to achieve his goals, the realities about being an astronaut that most people don’t know about, and how important a person’s character is in achieving their goals.  Explaining his thoughts on what he wants people to take away from his public speaking engagements, Paul says, “I want every young person, and even adult that I speak to in the U.S. to understand that we, the United States, sit at a unique position in that we should feel very proud that we have a space program that is respected and revered around the world.”  To learn more about Paul’s Virtus Adventures, visit virtusadventures.com. In 2009 Collin Stone recorded and released this set - Intelligent Darkness - to few people with little fanfare, it just kinda slipped under the radar...timing is everything so they say. Two years later he signs himself back up on Facebook, Drunken Monkey is one day late releasing the podcast, and NASA launches the final mission of the Space Shuttle Endeavor...coincidence? Ha! We all know there is no such thing as coincidence, everything happens for a reason. Surely you can see the connection and are watching with wonder and anticipation as witnesses to the big picture of the universe at work. We call this Synchrodestiny. Not following? OK try this simple meditation: First find a comfortable position in a quiet place and play Intelligent Darkness at a comfortable volume. Place your hands on your lap with the palms facing upward. Close your eyes and begin witnessing your breath and envision the music flowing through you as you listen and breath. On the inhale think of the word "so", on the exhale, think of the word "hum". Gradually both the breath and the sound will become quieter and quieter, and the breath becomes so quiet that it almost seems to stop. By quieting your breath, you quiet your mind. When you transcend, the mantra "so-hum" entirely disappears, and your breath pauses momentarily. Time itself comes to a stop and you're now in the field of pure consciousness, the non local domain, spirit, the ground of being. There with only music flowing through you, you will recieve a message...Namaste, The Drunken Monkey.
