Words are wonderful! Pickle, bubble, and hullabaloo are all super fun to say. But some words can be hurtful, like swear words. So if we aren't supposed to say them, why do swear words exist? We asked linguist Carolin Debray to help us find the answer.Got a question that seems unan-swear-able? Send it to us at BrainsOn.org/contact, and we'll dis-cuss the answer.

In this episode, Cara explores the power of language and how it shapes your little one's early dictionary long before they are able to talk yet. In short, what they hear is what they'll say! When you understand how their brilliant, growing brains are processing what you're saying, even if you're not talking directly to them, you'll begin to think before you speak and craft your sentences intentionally.
Why are language learners so drawn to learning the curse words so often as they begin playing with their target language? Should we be teaching cursing in class? In what context? Explicit language has huge cultural implications and is one of the first things ELLs learn, but we almost never teach it. Listen in as we discuss teachers' responsibilities around bad language. Now while Keith's post was about marriage it really struck a chord in me regarding wether or not we are fluid and growing or are we rigid and stagnant. Thus the title Rigidity and stagnation vs. Flow and Fanaticism The truth is we are all a little stagnant and rigid in some areas… I have very little time to keep up with what is hip or cool… just yesterday someone was talking about Mr. Beast… im like… who the what? Turns out he is the number one social media influencer in the world with the biggest YT channel on the planet… well he can't be that big because I don't know about him… but that right there is my problem… Im stagnant, rigid and it makes me ignorant… now trust me, I really could care less about Mr. Beast… but the point I am making is about my life priorities… My walk with Christ My marriage to my wife My parenting to my boys and grandkids My church My businesses that I run My health The rigid mindset is not one that you typically find in the uneducated or desperate… those people will try anything. It typically runs in 3 types of people, old, highly educated and the arrogant. And if you are able to really know yourself… and answer honestly to wether or not you are one of these… you may want to tune in a little more and you may be able to change. I remember having a conversation with a Doctor about carb backloading and how I was able to lose so much weight by eating 4-6 thousand calories a night before bed… and mostly junk food. The Doctor was shocked and incredibly arrogant… this was bad, it was impossible and it was an outright lie as far as he was concerned… there were only 2 problems. One… I had already lost 35 pounds doing it and my strength stayed the same… secondly I ran this by my nutritionist who worked with me over my 16 months of chemo who by the way had 3 doctorates in nutrition… she said absolutely it will work- but don't do it during chemo due to the insulin spike in the evenings. MY POINT… Be open to a big God. You can always improve your marriage, your spiritual walk, your finances, your health, your mindset…. and you in fact should be. What did the apostle Paul say… in Philippians 3:12 Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. 13 Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. Look we are talking about the apostle Paul… he aint no light weight when it comes to spiritual maturity. He DA MAN… and yet he says “Im not there yet, there is room to grow, but I press on, I have not taken hold of it, I forget what is behind… there is no place here to get stuck in the past… Im looking for what God wants to do in my marriage now, by business now, my health now, my relationships now, my church ministry now… there is no rigidity or stagnation in these verses by Paul. He is truly speaking of being in the flow of the Holy Spirit and is fanatically pursuing all the areas of growth that still exist out there for him… may you do the same!
