Recorded July 12, 2024 We're bookending the show with SMPTE 2110 stories, so we start with discussion of Cisco hosting a webinar on Precision Time Protocol (PTP). If you don't know what all that is, it's potentially huge news for AVoIP to play nice on enterprise networks from the sleepy giant of networking. Then we discuss the non-electronic products we prefer for building equipment racks, mounting projectors, hiding gear behind display monitors, and working with conference tables. We're pretty well all over the place, but we all agree that ADA compliance and keeping things clean go hand-in-hand. Finally, we consider an odd product from Blackmagic Design. This could be the greatest thing we didn't see at InfoComm or the worst thing ever created. And it's SMPTE 2110 native! Blackmagic Design announced new devices for SMPTE 2110 compliance, along with an updated Davinci Resolve 20 The post Blackmagic Design focusing on SMPTE 2110, Remote Production in 2024 appeared first on Geekazine.
Recorded April 17, 2024 Rather than a single news story, we cover a handful of product announcements from (and prior to) NAB. Blackmagic announced a bunch of SMPTE 2110 devices (sorta), Osbot has an NDI adapter that goes the wrong way, Cleanfeed is now supporting video (yea!), and PTZ Optics has an entire software production suite for their cameras. Then, we get into One Button Studios. Please don't build these. There's too many compromises and the experience is terrible. What people really want are “Self-service studios” that fit existing (and supported) campus workflows. Sure, you can build unicorns, but please stop. Also, if you do build one, it had better well use only one button. One of the AV SuperFriends works at a campus with a nominal one button studio that has a seven page instruction guide… Finally, Chris shares his concept of designing AV systems out of spite. Some might call it malicious AV integration, but it's more of an opportunity to streamline and improve general classrooms. Alternate show titles: I await the true mass disruption It's now for us poor people Curmudgedly Old Truck Guys Porn picking VHS I use foot pedals Everybody is on their own here This is where it gets slippery One button anonymous There is no metric out there Bring Your Own One Button Studio Studio If you build enough unicorns, it stops building a unicorn Rectal scan See that knob? Television, it turns out, is massive. When we set out to choose ten television shows that we found inspiring for Changeling, we had no idea that there were so many options we'd end up with, even considering the criteria we set for ourselves. (We looked at shows we had seen ourselves, and ideally ones that weren't already called out as inspiration in the books.) And that was before listeners started suggesting a bunch more. Nevertheless, we feel pretty happy with our picks; these are entries which we are fond of on their own, but also find well-suited for consideration through the lens of the game. Recorded April 28, 2023 Instead of AV news, we return to the topic of digital canvases only a few days after our previous discussion. We're joined by Atkins Fleming who has a suggestion for a software platform that seems perfect for digital canvases and remote teaching and learning, but the company seems unaware of the education market. Then we hash out the support tools and skills necessary for modern AV systems. Jamie puts it best when he says, “bring your laptop.” As AV becomes more and more IT, those with an IT background seem most comfortable supporting IP-based AV and many of those who grew up with analog AV are struggling. If nothing else, buy everyone a few managed network switches and get them comfortable with managing IPs and VLANs. Finally, Jamie covers the news from NAB. There were lots of announcements related to large, cloud-based delivery platforms, but perhaps the best news is the increasing support for SMPTE 2110 as a unified interoperable AVoIP standard. On this exciting new episode, we have the pleasure of chatting with Renard T. Jenkins, President of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers who's also the Senior Vice President of Production Integration & Creative Technology Services for Warner Bros. Discovery. Discussing the responsibilities within the role, we learn that it's both massive and multi-functional. With over 30 years in radio, film and television, Renard's early academic interest was in marine biology. We talk about what shifted his focus and how having grown up until the 3rd grade as selectively mute, totally introverted and an only child made him a better storyteller. Renard serves on a variety of boards including MovieLabs, Hollywood Professionals Association, UltraHD Forum and Content & Entertainment Council, to name a few. He's multiple award-winning, has two Emmys, a Peabody Award and has worked for entities such as Turner Broadcasting, TV One and PBS while his very first job was at ESPN. This conversation features many highlights and nestled inside is a retelling of a truly great Muhammad Ali encounter. Renard talks about the changes he'd like to see take place in the industry, what makes a great manager, getting into the flow of your purpose and living out one's own dreams. In particular, one sustainability panel featuring Barbara Lange, CEO of Kibo121 and previous Executive Director at SMPTE, Dom Robinson, Co-Founder, . Concerns around how to create sustainable workflows in media, the question of where media fits into the global emissions picture and how to identify and respond to key drivers for change were central themes at IBC2022. In particular, one sustainability panel featuring Barbara Lange, CEO of Kibo121 and previous Executive Director at SMPTE, Dom Robinson, Co-Founder, Director and Creative Firestarter of id3as, Khandiz Joni, Creative Sustainableist at Creative Zero and Kristan Bullett, CEO of Humans Not Robots, set out to provide some answers. The four speakers set out to raise awareness on the complex issues and responsibilities that the media industry must face up to. They pinpointed the lack of clear and consistent measurements currently in place and the need for education on energy consumption in all aspects of media, from production to distribution, and how navigating through the complexities can offer cost effectiveness and business opportunities. Defining Sustainability Lange opened the discussion, concerned about how many organisations have no idea where to start with sustainability in media, and to answer the questions is it real? she confirms, “It is most definitely real.” She gave a shout out to projects that are already looking at how productions can reduce their carbon footprint in the content creation phase, such as the Albert programme and the Green Production Guide, both of which offer organisations techniques to reduce their carbon footprint. She delved into the production workflow, from content creation to content manipulation and distribution, and pointed out that the biggest current challenge in implementing sustainable practices is that there are no standards of measurement and a lack of mandates, while some companies may even see implying a sustainability method as an added expense. “Sustainability means recognising that ending poverty and other deprivations go hand in hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality and spur economic growth, all while tackling climate change and environmental issues. Therefore, sustainability encompasses such Corporate Responsibility issues as diversity, equity and inclusion, as well as social justice issues”, said Lange. Joni emphasised the importance of defining sustainability via a human-centric approach - the intersection between people and planet: “Sustainability is about a stable resilient state of being and how do we get there? When we take the humanity out of this conversation, we are not going to drive the empathetic change we need to see in achieving this resilient state.” Blurred lines and gap-filling Dom Robinson spoke of energy consumption awareness in broadcasting vs. streaming: “In certain parts of broadcast and certainly in things like data centres, telco ISP, there's been a lot of [sustainability] thinking for a long time. But given that streaming is typically talked about as being 70% of network traffic these days, and we have a top line figure that ICT is burning 3% of all the world's energy. What I felt was [in] my industry, because we don't know, we haven't got that finger on the pulse yet and we're not ready to be transparent about things. We haven't worked out how to measure. [Energy consumption is] an afterthought.” Robinson added: “There was a lot of thinking that there's a linear relationship between bandwidth and energy. So if you reduce bandwidth, you're supposed to reduce energy. It doesn't really work like that. We don't quite know how it does work, because we are yet to go and measure it.There's no common framework of language.” Watch more Sustainability in news and sport operations Joni also recognised the lack of clarity surrounding sustainability in the industry: “You sort of cherry pick where we're going to use it so we can have an emissions reduction, and we'll give...

This month's topic is software AV and we couldn't decide between software AVoIP content, software AV control, or software management platforms, so we'll cover all three! We start with an article about a semiconductor manufacturer widening software (and hardware) support for SMPTE 2110, which gets us one step closer to HDBaseT-style interoperability… in theory. Then, it's a whirlwind tour of software AV content, control, applications, and more. Why are we using legacy thinking when building our networks? Will we ever fully trust the PC to be a true AV endpoint? After all a huge amount of current content originates from or is delivered to the classroom PC, so why can't we (reliably) leverage that for multi-protocol high bandwidth content? Article discussed: https://www.ravepubs.com/macnica-new-software-hardware-smpte-2110/

Matrox took the lead in embracing the SMPTE 2110 standard (what's currently used in broadcast video) for ProAV AV-over-IP and helped form the AIMS Alliance. AIMS, in turn, created the IPMX proposed standard for sending AV-over-IP that hopes to be ratified in late 2022, becoming the first and only AV-over-IP standard for ProAV installs. However, Matrox's ConvertIP does more than that — it […]

If you're reading this, there's a good chance you've heard of 8K video. But what is 8K video? Simply put, 8K refers to the resolution of the video - in other words, the number of pixels. 8K video has a resolution of 7680 x 4320, which is 16 times the resolution of 1080p HD! With consumer interest in 8K on the rise, now is the time for businesses to get on board and capitalize on this growing market. That's where the the 8K Association (8KA) comes in.As 8K content becomes more prevalent, it's important to have an organization that promotes the advancement of 8K video. The 8K Association is dedicated to accelerating industry-wide adoption of 8K content, products, and services. Their mission is to ensure the 8K ecosystem thrives, and they're doing this by establishing Work Groups to provide information about the state of the 8K ecosystem to consumers, organizations, and standards development groups. The history of the 8K AssociationThe 8KA was founded in 2017 by a group of key technology companies in the consumer and professional 8K ecosystem. These companies saw the potential for 8K and its impact on the future of video and wanted to create an organization that would help promote the adoption of 8K.What does the 8K Association do?The 8KA has several initiatives underway to promote 8K and help businesses make the transition to this new format. They offer resources such as white papers, webinars, case studies, and more to educate businesses about 8K and its benefits. They also advocate for standards development groups, such as SMPTE, to ensure that 8K is properly represented in industry standards. What are the limitations? The 8KA is still a relatively new organization, so they are limited in the resources and manpower they have available. However, they are quickly making progress and gaining support from businesses within the 8K ecosystem.4K vs 8K resolutionWhen it comes to 8K, there is a lot of confusion about the difference between 8K and other resolutions such as UHD and HD. UHD has a resolution of 3840 x 2400, which is twice the resolution of 1080p HD. HD has a resolution of 1280 x 720, which is one-quarter the resolution of 8K.So what does this mean for businesses? Simply put, if you're not already making the transition to UHD, you need to start thinking about making the jump to 8K. The benefits are clear - higher resolutions lead to better image quality and a more immersive viewing experience for your customers. When will this come to market? The 8K Association is working hard to promote the adoption of 8K, but it will still be a few years before we see widespread adoption. The first 8K TVs are already on the market, but they're very expensive and there's not a lot of 8K content available yet. Most businesses will probably wait until 8K becomes more affordable and mainstream before making the switch. In the meantime, the 8KA is working to educate businesses about 8K and its benefits so that they can be prepared for when this new format takes off. If you want to stay ahead of the curve, keep an eye on the 8K Association website and their work to promote 8K!Interview by Todd Cochrane of Geek News Central and Christopher Jordan of The Talking Sound.Sponsored by: Get $5 to protect your credit card information online with Privacy. Many people don't know that there is actually a “proposed” AV-over-IP standard, called IPMX, that's moving through the process of becoming an “adopted standard” for ProAV. Developed from SMPTE 2110 and managed by the AIMS Alliance, IPMX already exists. Also, a company called Macnica has a reference board, dubbed the MPA1000, that you can buy today — and, […]

It's one of the most pressing trends facing the sports video production industry today: the move from baseband to IP. With the ratification of the SMPTE 2110 standard, IP has more momentum than ever before. Today on the show we take a deep look at the technology that promises to change broadcast facility infrastructures across the globe. We begin with a case study that looks at perhaps the largest IP facility out there: Telemundo Enterprises in Miami. First, you'll hear from Jeff Mayzurk, SVP, Operations and Technology at NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises who will give you the high-level look at the company and why they decided to make this crucial leap in their facility. Then, you'll hear a presentation from Chris Swisher, Director of Production Systems Engineering at NBCU to drill down into the tech specifics. Following all of that, we have a bonus conversation for you featuring some technology leaders in this space, including Sony, NewTek, and Lawo to help you determine which protocol is best for you. The conversation doesn't end with SMPTE 2110. Sony's NMI, Newtek's NDI, and Evertz's ASPEN are all still viable solutions. What should you consider before making the dive. We sit down with a roundtable of experts to tackle this topic. Joining us are Erling Hedkvist, SVP and Business Development Manager at Lawo, Deon LeCointe, Senior Manager, IP and Sports Solutions for Sony Electronics, and Brian Olson, VP, Product Management for NewTek. The conversation is moderated by our Executive Director, Editorial Services Ken Kerschbaumer. These talks took place at our annual SVG IP Production Forum which was held at Telemundo in Miami on August 20, 2019. This episode of The SVG Podcast is supported by Sony. IP technology has given us new ways to create the powerful content that viewers crave. That's why Sony has built IP technology into their entire lineup of live production products. They've helped broadcasters on four continents make the transition from baseband to IP. And they can help you design, configure, test and implement your IP systems. Migrating to IP is a journey. Sony is with you every step of the way. Learn more now over at pro.sony. The SVG Podcast is for the sports-video–production professional looking to keep up with the latest in sports-video–production operations and technology. The program features interviews with some of the biggest, most influential names in the sports-video business talking trends and topics that are making an impact on the industry.
Jeff Turzo is a musician, producer, and founder of Overstayer Recording Equipment, a company that designs cool audio gear for the studio. Jeff started out as a musician and spent a decade producing and touring with his band, God Lives Under Water. His band was signed by Rick Rubin to American Recordings in 1993. GLU went on to record multiple albums with a heavy guitar, synth, loop driven pop sound that landed them a movie soundtrack hit for the Keanu Reeves film, Johnny Mnemonic, and airtime on alternative rock stations and MTV. This led to years of touring for his band sharing the stage with other heavy pop bands like KMFDM, Korn, Filter, Deftones, No Doubt, and Sublime. In the studio Jeff was a multi-instrumentalist and producer with synthesis/sampling knowledge, sometimes producing with Matt Mahaffey (episode 69), but also with his GLU partner David Reilly, staying busy with remix projects that included Skinny Puppy, Rob Zombie and Messiah. He also organized For the Masses: A Tribute To Depeche Mode in 1998, and released Up Off The Floor with GLU in 2004. In part 6, we'll run through how to use ACES in your workflow. ACES is the new SMPTE standard for colour science developed by the Academy and this should allow you to composite with mathematical accuracy on top of great looking results. Please bear in mind that the ACEs 1.0 is more suited to working with CGI, log and camera native formats. So if all your media is already output-referred REC709, the Simple Linear Workflow policy may be a better fit which you can see in part 5.
