Federal Tech Podcast: Listen and learn how successful companies get federal contracts

This is John Gilroy It is hard to believe that I have done over 1,000 podcast interviews. Some guests get four hundred impressions on LinkedIn, and some get 4,000. How do you explain the difference? -- keep listening . . .. Hit the music, Manny . . .  = = = Ever since Covid, I have been doing lots of in-person interviews – at BBQ places, Fish Shacks, breweries; we have had fantastic success; most guests ask how they can leverage their appearance to increase reach and improve brand awareness for their company. Let me share with you four ways to take advantage of your podcast appearance. ·      Tell the story visually. ·      Be specific. ·      Make it easy to reach you. ·      Ask  = = = =       Number ONE           Tell the story visually – I realize this is counter-intuitive, but our small human brains react to images much better than audio or text. Studies have shown that your optic nerve is 40x faster than your audio nerve. So . . . >Make sure you have a great publicity photo. I have changed the publicity photo on LinkedIn       for clients and have seen their followers double. > Even better, get a photo doing the podcast face-to-face; it's not that difficult. You can ask the podcast producer if they can record at a conference. The “where” is not important. LOGO When you do your promotion, people will see the image first. An image of a guest in a Zoom and an image of a guest in front of a microphone with a logo is like night and day. >You need three elements for a successful on-site interview:   a microphone with a logo, a professional photographer, and an audio engineer. MICROPHONE – A “flag” is the logo that appears on a microphone – make sure you have one. PHOTOGRAPHER: The professional photographer will get you fantastic images for promotion, but also for your LinkedIn profile, and your website. You can use it when you ask to get on other podcasts. AUDIO An audio engineer using a directional microphone can bring life to the interview. The listener hears noises in the background, it makes the interview authentic. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =  = = = = = = = =  = = = = = = = = = = = =   Number TWO          In order to be terrific, you gotta be specific. Before the interview, rehearse a short “origin” story and a “customer benefit” story, include details and colorful language. Example: Yeah, we have been in business for a while now. Example: We were founded in 2016 by two Google engineers who had a better idea of how to manage networks. = = = From there, develop statistics about the problem you solve. Listeners will remember the story, but the numbers will make it emotionally comfortable to justify listening to the podcast. = = = Covid has really had an impact on system administrators managing cloud applications; how has Covid impacted your log volumes? Example:  Many companies have increased the numbers they manage Example:  ·      Before Covid we were managing 200GB per day in log data ·      After Covid, we now manage 100TB a day in log data. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Number THREE   Make it easy to reach you. >This is equally true if you have a big company or a small company. Example:  just look me up on Google, my name is Dennis Szymanski. That's hard. I have interviewed companies like Kenetica, Savyint, Ardalyst How to make it easy:  register an easy to remember website and redirect it to your company. Example:  I got a tough last name, Szymanski. The best way to contact me is with my website, federal tech podcast dot com. My name is hard to spell, but the fundraiser is easy: bike for your beer dot com. You can expand this to your call to action at the end of the interview. Once you have an easy to remember website, then have a call to action that will benefit the listener. Example:  Go to FederalTechPodcast.com and download the scorecard on How to Leverage your Podcast Appearance. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =  = = = =  = = = = = = =         Number FOUR    Ask. >Ryan Leveque once wrote a book with a one-word title -- “Ask,” let us apply “ask” to your podcast appearance. >> Ask the host to mention the call to action verbally and on the show notes page with a link. >> Ask the listeners to download the valuable PDF from the URL you mentioned. >> Ask your company to include your appearance on the company website – you can slip it into a blog, a press release, or an event. >> Ask your social media team to prepare for the release of the interview and then hit hard, especially during the first 72 hours. Personally, for each guest I do 25 Tweets, audiogram, LinkedIn, transcript, show notes with image logo, and link to company: email, paid advertising, and much more. If that is what I do, your team should double my efforts. >> Ask your followers on LinkedIn to comment, not like. A twelve-word comment is worth a hundred “likes.” You can prime the pump by asking questions – “What do you think of a software bill of materials?”  >> Ask to get on other podcasts based on your appearance – now you have a website with a show notes page to reference when you approach other podcasters.  = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =  = = = = = = = = = = = Conclusion: how to leverage your podcast appearance. ONE    Tell the story visually, not verbally. TWO  Be specific. THREE   Make it easy to reach you. FOUR    Ask   I'd like to thank our guest, John Gilroy, moderator of the Federal Tech Podcast. . ..

What do you do when your daily log entries increase by a factor of fifty?  Shane Barney, USCIS describes that prior to the cloud he had about 200GB of log data a day; after the move to the cloud, this was multiplied by 50, they are at 10TB a day.  Obviously, it is not possible to use old tools for a workload this large. Everyone reading this knows that when the federal government made the move to the hybrid cloud, they became deluged with data.  The solution discussed today is something called Cloud Security Posture Management. This is an approach that automates identification and remediation of risks across cloud infrastructures.   During the interview, the federal leaders gave examples of how they have gone through a digital transition and assumed everything was configured properly.  After the transition, the error became obvious.  One takeaway is that pilots have checklists, and systems administrators need an automated checklist to look for compliance issues and misconfigurations. Jeffrey Lush, U.S. Air Force, summarizes the need clearly: there is a gap between what you know and what you don't know. Each expert observed that managing a cloud network gives better visibility, for instance, being alerted to when there are open ports, open potentially exposed to the Internet. Further, an approach that includes CSPM can give administrators monitoring, validation, and compliance specifically tied to many areas of the Zero Trust.  The net result is early threat detection. In a rare instance of validation of a digital transformation, Shane Barney estimates that his agency saved $25 million in savings through deploying a Cloud Security Posture Management system.  Twitter:  @FedInsider LinkedIn:    https://www.linkedin.com/company/fedinsider/ Facebook:   https://www.facebook.com/FedInsiderNews

AWS is fond of saying security is job zero. That means it's nobody in particular's job, which means it falls to the rest of us. Just the news you need to know, none of the fluff.Corey: Couchbase Capella Database-as-a-Service is flexible, full-featured, and fully managed with built-in access via key-value, SQL, and full-text search. Capella has the best price performance of any fully managed document database. Couchbase Capella: Make your data sing.Corey: We begin with a yikes because suddenly the world is aflame and of course there are cybersecurity considerations to that. I'm going to have more on that to come in future weeks because my goal with this podcast is to have considered takes, not the rapid-response, alarmist, the-world-is-ending ones. There are lots of other places to find those. So, more to come on that.In happier news, your favorite Cloud Economist was quoted in the Wall Street Journal last week, talking about how staggering Microsoft's security surface really is. And credit where due, it's hard to imagine a better person for the role than Charlie Bell. He's going to either fix a number of systemic problems at Azure or else carve his resignation letter into Satya Nadella's door with an axe. I really have a hard time envisioning a third outcome.A relatively light week aside from that. The Register has a decent roundup of how various companies are responding to Russia's invasion of a sovereign country. Honestly, the solidarity among those companies is kind of breathtaking. I didn't have that on my bingo card for the year.Corey: You know the drill: You're just barely falling asleep and you're jolted awake by an emergency page. That's right, it's your night on call, and this is the bad kind of Call of Duty. The good news is, is that you've got New Relic, so you can quickly run down the incident checklist and find the problem. You have an errors inbox that tells you that Lambdas are good, RUM is good, but something's up in APM. So, you click the error and find the deployment marker where it all began. Dig deeper, there's another set of errors. What is it? Of course, it's Kubernetes, starting after an update. You ask that team to roll back and bam, problem solved. That's the value of combining 16 different monitoring products into a single platform: You can pinpoint issues down to the line of code quickly. That's why the Dev and Ops teams at DoorDash, GitHub, Epic Games, and more than 14,000 other companies use New Relic. The next late-night call is just waiting to happen, so get New Relic before it starts. And you can get access to the whole New Relic platform at 100 gigabytes of data free, forever, with no credit card. Visit newrelic.com/morningbrief that's newrelic.com/morningbrief.Corey: If you expose 200GB of data it's bad. If that data belongs to customers, it's worse. If a lot of those customers are themselves children, it's awful. But if you ignore reports about the issue, leave the bucket open, and only secure it after your government investigates you for ignoring it under the GDPR, you are this week's S3 Bucket Negligence Awardwinner and should probably be fired immediately.AWS had a single announcement of note last week. “Fine-tune and optimize AWS WAF Bot Control mitigation capability”, and it's super important because, with WAF and Bot Control, the failure mode in one direction of a service like this is that bots overwhelm your site. The failure mode in the other direction is that you start blocking legitimate traffic. And the worst failure mode is that both of these happen at the same time. And a new tool I'm kicking the tires on, Granted. It's apparently another way of logging into a bunch of different AWS accounts, so it's time for me to kick the tires on that because I consistently have problems with that exact thing. And that's what happened last week in AWS security which, let's be clear, is not the most important area of the world to be focusing on right now. Thanks for listening; I'll talk to you next week.Corey: Thank you for listening to the AWS Morning Brief: Security Edition with the latest in AWS security that actually matters. Please follow AWS Morning Brief on Apple Podcast, Spotify, Overcast—or wherever the hell it is you find the dulcet tones of my voice—and be sure to sign up for the Last Week in AWS newsletter at lastweekinaws.com.Announcer: This has been a HumblePod production.

Note: Gilbert is noticing some cache-based throttling during very large file transfers, dropping speeds in RAID0 from 1.3GB/s to 600MB/s. This is disappointing (even 1.3GB/s is disappointing in a way -- it should be closer to 2GB/s), but won't always be a factor. Plus, the RAID0 speed still exceeds that of typical external SSDs. However, if you're using a single drive (a config that doesn't benefit from the RAID0 multiplier), and you're frequently transferring large collections of files (>200GB), you might see performance as low as 150MB/s. Vivir de la Fotografía

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 27, 2020 23:02

LLDB Threading support now ready, Multiple IPSec VPN tunnels with FreeBSD, Netflix Optimized FreeBSD's Network Stack More Than Doubled AMD EPYC Performance, happy eyeballs with unwind(8), AWS got FreeBSD ARM 12, OpenSSH U2F/FIDO support, and more. Headlines LLDB Threading support now ready for mainline (https://blog.netbsd.org/tnf/entry/lldb_threading_support_now_ready) Upstream describes LLDB as a next generation, high-performance debugger. It is built on top of LLVM/Clang toolchain, and features great integration with it. At the moment, it primarily supports debugging C, C++ and ObjC code, and there is interest in extending it to more languages. In February, I have started working on LLDB, as contracted by the NetBSD Foundation. So far I've been working on reenabling continuous integration, squashing bugs, improving NetBSD core file support, extending NetBSD's ptrace interface to cover more register types and fix compat32 issues and fixing watchpoint support. Then, I've started working on improving thread support which is taking longer than expected. You can read more about that in my September 2019 report. So far the number of issues uncovered while enabling proper threading support has stopped me from merging the work-in-progress patches. However, I've finally reached the point where I believe that the current work can be merged and the remaining problems can be resolved afterwards. More on that and other LLVM-related events happening during the last month in this report. Multiple IPSec VPN tunnels with FreeBSD (https://blog.socruel.nu/text-only/how-to-multiple-ipsec-vpn-tunnels-on-freebsd.txt) The FreeBSD handbook describes an IPSec VPN tunnel between 2 FreeBSD hosts (see https://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/ipsec.html) But it is also possible to have multiple, 2 or more, IPSec VPN tunnels created and running on a FreeBSD host. How to implement and configure this is described below. The requirements is to have 3 locations (A, B and C) connected with IPSec VPN tunnels using FreeBSD (11.3-RELEASE). Each location has 1 IPSec VPN host running FreeBSD (VPN host A, B and C). VPN host A has 2 IPSec VPN tunnels: 1 to location B (VPN host B) and 1 to location C (VPN host C). News Roundup Netflix Optimized FreeBSD's Network Stack More Than Doubled AMD EPYC Performance (https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=Netflix-NUMA-FreeBSD-Optimized) Drew Gallatin of Netflix presented at the recent EuroBSDcon 2019 conference in Norway on the company's network stack optimizations to FreeBSD. Netflix was working on being able to deliver 200Gb/s network performance for video streaming out of Intel Xeon and AMD EPYC servers, to which they are now at 190Gb/s+ and in the process that doubled the potential of EPYC Naples/Rome servers and also very hefty upgrades too for Intel. Netflix has long been known to be using FreeBSD in their data centers particularly where network performance is concerned. But in wanting to deliver 200Gb/s throughput from individual servers led them to making NUMA optimizations to the FreeBSD network stack. Allocating NUMA local memory for kernel TLS crypto buffers and for backing files sent via sentfile were among their optimizations. Changes to network connection handling and dealing with incoming connections to Nginx were also made. For those just wanting the end result, Netflix's NUMA optimizations to FreeBSD resulted in their Intel Xeon servers going from 105Gb/s to 191Gb/s while the NUMA fabric utilization dropped from 40% to 13%. unwind(8); "happy eyeballs" (https://marc.info/?l=openbsd-tech&m=157475113130337&w=2) In case you are wondering why happy eyeballs: It's a variation on this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Happy_Eyeballs unwind has a concept of a best nameserver type. It considers a configured DoT nameserver to be better than doing it's own recursive resolving. Recursive resolving is considered to be better than asking the dhcp provided nameservers. This diff sorts the nameserver types by quality, as above (validation, resolving, dead...), and as a tie breaker it adds the median of the round trip time of previous queries into the mix. One other interesting thing about this is that it gets us past captive portals without a check URL, that's why this diff is so huge, it rips out all the captive portal stuff (please apply with patch -E): 17 files changed, 385 insertions(+), 1683 deletions(-) Please test this. I'm particularly interested in reports from people who move between networks and need to get past captive portals. Amazon now has FreeBSD ARM 12 (https://aws.amazon.com/marketplace/pp/B081NF7BY7) Product Overview FreeBSD is an operating system used to power servers, desktops, and embedded systems. Derived from BSD, the version of UNIX developed at the University of California, Berkeley, FreeBSD has been continually developed by a large community for more than 30 years. FreeBSD's networking, security, storage, and monitoring features, including the pf firewall, the Capsicum and CloudABI capability frameworks, the ZFS filesystem, and the DTrace dynamic tracing framework, make FreeBSD the platform of choice for many of the busiest web sites and most pervasive embedded networking and storage systems. OpenSSH U2F/FIDO support in base (https://www.undeadly.org/cgi?action=article;sid=20191115064850) I just committed all the dependencies for OpenSSH security key (U2F) support to base and tweaked OpenSSH to use them directly. This means there will be no additional configuration hoops to jump through to use U2F/FIDO2 security keys. Hardware backed keys can be generated using "ssh-keygen -t ecdsa-sk" (or "ed25519-sk" if your token supports it). Many tokens require to be touched/tapped to confirm this step. You'll get a public/private keypair back as usual, except in this case, the private key file does not contain a highly-sensitive private key but instead holds a "key handle" that is used by the security key to derive the real private key at signing time. So, stealing a copy of the private key file without also stealing your security key (or access to it) should not give the attacker anything. Once you have generated a key, you can use it normally - i.e. add it to an agent, copy it to your destination's authorized_keys files (assuming they are running -current too), etc. At authentication time, you will be prompted to tap your security key to confirm the signature operation - this makes theft-of-access attacks against security keys more difficult too. Please test this thoroughly - it's a big change that we want to have stable before the next release. SD -> 16MB, 32 MB, 64MB, 128MB, 256MB, 512MB, 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB. No soportan el BUS UHS.   SDHC-> 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB. Soportan BUS UHS.   SDXC-> 64GB, 128GB, 200GB, 512GB, 2TB. Soportan BUS UHS.

Of those 60 I had about 12 cartridges and the rest were all digital.I know this is very much a first world problem, but changing cartridges was a pain. I'm just saying I have really experienced this issue. Just consider over 4 plus years, playing 300 days a year.. that's 1,200 days.. and multiple games a day.. that can be thousands of cartridge changes. So obviously the bad things about digital:1. They cost more, you can't get the good Amazon.com prices2. I had to buy my own 200GB storage card for $783. If you get some bad games or finish a game you don't want, you're stuck with them and can't trade them in...All 3 of those items add to not an insignificant amount of money, I.e. Hundreds of dollars more to go all digital..The advantage of all digital: user experience.. it's more fun and easier and convenient. For me, video games are all about fun, so yeah I'm splurging and making it a luxury item to go all digital and I'm glad I have.Tweet From Rebecca@RunJumpStomp RE physical+download: it's fine if it can be downloaded with a used copy as well. It can also cycle down to 24Hz on still images. ARS has praised the new ProMotion by saying that it makes it easier to read text and scroll simultaneously, with the “ghosting” effect you get at 60Hz greatly reduced What everyone agrees on is that the new A10x processor is blazingly fast Smart keyboard is getting mixed reviews. Mashable noted that Apple had in-room comparisons with its competitors, including Sonos Play:3 and Amazon Echo, and that the HomePod easily beat the two other speakers in pure music playback quality. CNET: HomePod came off as bolder and more vivid than Sonos Play:3 in the [listening] experience, and a lot better than Amazon Echo. I'd also say the music sounded consistently vivid and crisp in a quiet space What HiFi: We also heard a pair of HomePods playing a live recording of Hotel California by The Eagles. The attention to detail was striking, with different instruments sounding discretely realised. Engadget called HomePod's audio "incredible,” if listening to the HomePod was like listening to a CD, then audio through the Echo sounded like AM radio.   Apple Drops 2TB iCloud Storage Price to $9.99, Eliminates 1TB Option https://www.macrumors.com/2017/06/06/apple-updates-icloud-storage-prices/ Following the WWDC keynote, Apple updated and simplified its iCloud storage tiers 50GB: $0.99 200GB: $2.99 2TB: $9.99 (updated from 1TB) Apple is offering an option to share a 200GB or 2TB iCloud storage plan with family members, which is perhaps the reason behind the price drop.  Google Photos offers free backup for photos and videos.  Or you can back up via Plex premium.   Offload unused apps  Automatically offload unused apps if you’re low on storage.   iOS 11 Preview: Control Center Gets Customizable With 3D Touch https://www.macrumors.com/2017/06/06/ios-11-preview-control-center/ Control center is now customizable, and you can use 3D touch to expand some control center icons (like the music control)   iOS 11 Lets AirPods Users Change Tracks With a Double Tap https://www.macrumors.com/2017/06/07/ios-11-airpods-change-tracks-double-tap/ AirPods will soon be able to skip forwards and backwards between tracks with a double tap of either earpiece, thanks to a new additional setting in iOS 11.  It’ll be possible to customize the AirPods so that a double tap on one earpiece skips, while double tapping on on the other earpiece goes to the previous track.    Under Review Yuneec Typhoon H  Lake Coloring App for iPhone and iPad  Espin Bikes  Espin bike deal Leander mentioned on Gilt

PodCast Show Notes: ControlTalk NOW thanks this week’s sponsors Contemporary Controls and International Solutions of America (ISA). 2014 ControlTrends Awards Nominees Nino DiCosmo, Tridium’s President and General Manager, and Thermokon’s North American Sales Manager, David Alliband, join us this week on ControlTalk NOW, providing unique insights into Nino DiCosmo’s high-profile executive role in running one of the world’s leading software platforms and David Alliband’s vigorous efforts to take the Thermokon product portfolio to the next level in the North American market. Contemporary Controls is your ideal partner for applying network technology to your BACnet building automation project. The industry is embracing Ethernet connectivity to Direct Digital Controllers (DDC) along with open protocols such as BACnet, Modbus, and Sedona Framework. ISA’s warehouse maintains a large inventory of new and reconditioned parts. From years of experience, we know the parts our customers need most. So in most cases, your parts are shipped within 24 hours — in many instances, the same day — saving you the expense of lengthy down-time. ControlTrends Awards Finalist Sky Foundryy: Are you drowning in a sea of Big Data? John Petze and his team at SkyFoundry have created a Building Automation Controls analytics package that allow you to easliy find the data that matters to you. Whether you are looking at trends, alarms, or faults SkyFoundry enables the creation of “Sparks” (events) that allow you to interact with your data in powerful ways that make your buildings safer and more efficient. Lynxspring Nominated for Multiple 2014 ControlTrends Awards! E-news from Marc Petock. We are pleased to announce that Lynxspring has been nominated as finalists in the 2014 Control Trend Awards in several categories. The Control Trend Awards recognize the people, product, and manufacturers in our industry that make the HVAC, Controls, and Building Automation Industry what it is today. Heads Up! Hackers Hint at Terror Attacks, Release More Data from Sony Pictures. We received this notice from IT World’s Senior Staff Writer, Steve Ragan. Now that we learned of this potential threat, we need to pass it on to the ControlTrends Community for greatest dissemination. Sony’s $60 Million dollar insurance coverage will not be enough to recover from theft of Sony Pictures Entertainment content and the leakage of more than 200GB of data, including pre-release movies, executive emails, sales and marketing data, and nearly everything from human resources. Niagara Framework Changed Our World! Tridium’s Niagara AX is nominated for the 2014 ControlTrends Awards Building Integration & Automation Software of the Year. And,understandably so. The Niagara Software platform has driven change and innovation — and made the smart connected building, as we able to perceive it, a reality. Tridium’s next gen framework, Niagara 4, whose full release is imminent, is even more awesome. CTN Interview with Tridium’s Nino DiCosmo, nominated for the 2014 ControlTrends Awards Executive of the Year, Large Manufacturer. Nino DiCosmo is an accomplished global executive recognized for commitment to setting and achieving Tridium’s vision and goals. Nino is an expert at scaling operations, building customer focused teams, and leading innovative product development. Thermokon — Keeping in Touch with the Future. Thermokon EasySens- EnOcean is nominated for the 2014 ControlTrends Wireless Product/Solution of the Year. David Alliband, Sales Manager, North America is excited about Thermokon’s continued success and the many wired and wireless products and solutions Thermokon has to offer. When Thermokon Sensortechnik GmbH was founded in 1987 by Harald Zygan in Mittenaar-Bicken, Germany, hardly anyone expected the business to grow out of this scale. CTN Interview with David Alliband, Sales Manager, North America. David Alliband reviews the variety of wired and wireless products available from Thermokon and the HVAC applications the Thermokon products are especially well-suited for. Thermokon has grown from a sensor manufacturer to a solutions provider with a broad range of highly competitive quality products available from a distributor near you. Rising Plug-in Electric Vehicle Adoption — Impacts on the Grid (Negligible, for Now). December, 2014: Six utilities that participated in DOE’s cost-shared Smart Grid Investment Grant (SGIG) program deployed in-home and public electric vehicle charging stations and evaluated customer charging behaviors and impacts on the grid. There are relatively few plug-in electric vehicles on the road today, and as a result the six SGIG projects focused on establishing the charging infrastructure with a relatively low number of stations and evaluated a small number of participating vehicles. CTN’S Smart Building Tip of the Week: Accruent’s Facility 360 — Become a Driver of Success. Convert your facility from a cost center to a strategic contributor. Great information from Accruent on how facilities management teams can play a more strategic role in organizations.7 Ways to Save Time, Costs, and Energy: Download White Paper.
