Venky Balasubramanian started Plivo in 2011 along with his co-founder Michael Ricordeau. Initially, Plivo was an open-source GitHub project, but after attending a developer conference in Chicago, the co-founder duo decided to commercialise their voice-based app communication framework. Initially, they applied for Y Combinator's Winter 2011 Batch, but were rejected. Venky emailed Paul Graham to ask why they had been rejected, and he said: 1. Venky B and Michael Ricordeau didn't have a lot of in-person co-founder experience; they had only met offline in Chicago at that conference, and 2. Plivo was a pre-revenue company. Venky Balasubramanian got to work proving to Paul Graham that he and Michael had what it took to succeed as a business, scoring Plivo's first customer and beginning to generate revenue. He also raised a pre-seed round from Morpheus, Seeders and One97 Mobility Fund, along with Vijay Shekhar Sharma. Following this, Plivo was accepted into Y Combinator's Summer 2012 batch, and counted companies like 9GAG, Boosted Boards, Coinbase, Soylent, and Zapier as its batchmates. Venky B clearly remembers seeing Coinbase's Brian Armstrong offering other Y Combinator founders bitcoins in exchange for signing up for Coinbase. By the time Plivo's time at Y Combinator was over, they were generating more revenue than most of their fellow startups, and were able to raise a $1.5M seed round from investors like YC, Battery Ventures, A16Z, and Qualcomm Ventures. This fundraise grabbed media attention and also solidified Plivo's reputation as a business with trustworthy, legitimate backers. In 2017, Plivo raised $8M in venture debt, rather than pursuing a Series A. While these funds did temporarily alter the startup's culture, Venky B and Michael Ricordeau were able to course-correct, saving the company from the high-burn trap many other SaaS businesses fall into. By raising debt instead of a Series A, Venky and Michael were also able to retain their equity in Plivo. Plivo has no plans to go public or sell, and are looking forward to growing Plivo's new offerings including Contacto and Sellular. Contacto is an omnichannel contact center that seamlessly combines your customer conversations and your existing systems, and Sellular is a modern sales platform built for Salesforce users. Both Contacto and Sellular have been internally funded by and set up within Plivo, but with siloed teams and goals which enable them to grow independently. Today Plivo has a team of 300, the company is fully remote across USA and India, they're profitable, and are bringing in somewhere between $50 to $100 million in annual revenue from customers across 190+ countries. This week Oliver interviews Sanjay Dastoor, one of the founders of Boosted Boards and subsequently Skip, who operate a shared scooter service in DC. Even electric bikes and skateboards are becoming more of a "thing". If you saw my Instagram post a few weeks ago you may have seen the post of myself and Karamo Brown from Queer Eye. And then if you read the caption, you'd see that I don't have a car (well, at the time I didn't have a car, I do now, but that's not important to the story). Living without a car in Los Angeles is not ideal, the transit system is anything but robust and glamorous. So as the rise of electric scooters took off, I naturally was a big fan. In fact, I needed to figure out how I could get one of these bad boys for myself! I started digging around the internet and thank you IG ads, I came across, Boosted Boards! Boosted Boards flagship product is that electric skateboard that you see all over town (at least here in LA). Well, they also now make whats they call the Boosted Rev, an electric scooter! When I was watching videos on their website and YouTube trying to get a good sense of this machine I was blown away. This truly is a beast. The thing has 3 modes and a top speed of 25mph. I have yet to find a scooter that gives you that much speed. So I'm digging and digging, mining the internet and keep coming back to the Boosted Rev. So finally, I end up on a call with their marketing team. Because only naturally, right? Full disclosure, I got the Boosted Rev. and I'm glad that I did! Yes, it's an awesome machine, but honestly, it's more about the team behind the scooter. I'm talking about the team at Boosted Boards. This is where I met Bobby. Bobby on the marketing team as Boosted Boards. When we started talking I was very candid with him letting him know who I was (i.e LGBT Stories) and that Boosted's web presence doesn't show one much of inclusion within the LGBTQ community. There was nothing that stood out that would make any LGBTQ kid who has that same "skater vibe" that Boosted does, feel personally connected to the company. He laughed when I said this, and then proceeded to tell me about how LGBTQ friendly the office. That was reassuring. That's when he told me that he was actually gay and a perfect example of how inclusive they are as a company. So this brings us to today's story. All electric scooters are not created equal. I've found ones from Spin, Bird, and Lime to often be broken, shaky, or out of battery. But now the founders of Boosted Boards, which makes the steadiest and safest-feeling electric skateboards, are bringing their rugged hardware expertise to the scooter world. Following on from the success of their original Boosted Board exploit, the team went on to get their hands on the other popular boards on the market, and predictably broke all of them. Richo and Mike will investigate the security of several popular skateboards, including Boosted's flagship model and demonstrate several vulnerabilities that allow complete control of a an unmodified victim's skateboard, as well as other attacks on the firmware of the board and controller directly. Richo likes his ducks flat and his instruction sets reduced. By day he works at Stripe as a security engineer, by night he writes (lots of) open source code, on everything from the rust compiler to debugging aids like voltron.
